Ruby Rogers #7

Ruby Rogers: Tell Me About It: Ruby Rogers 7

Rate this book

Ruby's off to the seaside with Mum, Dad and Mum's work friend Deb and her family. It's soon clear that Ruby and Sasha, Deb's daughter, have absolutely nothing in common, so when Sasha does decide to take a sudden interest in monkeys in an evil attempt at one-upmanship, this can mean only one thing: REVENGE.

It's a good job Dad wants to teach Ruby to swim, as it gives them both an escape from Sasha and her family. Well, it would be a good idea if he didn't almost drown her!

Ruby Rogers Tell Me About It by Sue Limb is a very funny book. Limb deploys subtle dead-pan humour excellently - I am sure that Limb’s reference to the monkey’s grin is about Tony Blair for example.

The story and characters are well developed and the protagonist, Ruby, is full of energy and is a loveable character. The story is not very serious and has a feel-good nature to it throughout. There is however still scope to explore some of the issues raised with the class such as friendship, family relationships and revenge.

I would guess that Ruby is probably around 9 or 10 years old and the book is aimed at this age range. This and the fact that the story is told through Ruby, and that the reader is treated to seeing what her view on the world is, is appealing, although admittedly probably more so for girls than boys. That said I think a 10 year old girl with a high level of confidence in her reading would enjoy this light-hearted and fast paced book – which is what reading is all about really.

Ruby is a young girl (around 8 years old?) who goes on holiday with her Mum and Dad. Normally they go on holiday on their own, but this time they go with Ruby's Mum's friend and her family. It isn't a natural friendship, and this book tells the story through Ruby's eyes.

It's a funny and a laid back book, it's good recreational reading, likely for girls in KS2. As a kid I think I would have given in 4 stars, the 3 stars is from my (adult) point of view. I can see kids wanting to read the others in the series.
