World War II brings divided loyalties and tough decisions in this page turning drama from Fenella Miller. Hannah Austen-Bagshaw’s privileged background can’t stop her falling in love with working-class pilot, Jack, but Hannah has a secret. Torn between her duty and her humanity, she is sheltering a young German pilot knowing she risks being arrested as a traitor. Hannah’s worst fears are realised when Jack finds out what she has done and their love begins to unravel. Will her betrayal be too much for Jack to forgive?

This book did not work for me. It's a very light read with a very thin storyline. The heroine is not all that likable and quite silly at times. Everything is settled far too easily, sometimes even within a page or two. She has this momentous secret, it comes out and then almost immediately it's forgotten about. There's a lot going on in the story but nothing seems to tie together and there are so many characters I found it hard to keep track of who was who, especially as some of them were only mentioned early on and again later without anything to make them stand out so I forgot who they were. I didn't buy the love story. It was very weak. The characters had no dept to them and the ending was completely rushed. I know this author has her fans, it just wasn't for me.
What did I just read? I'm not sure what the point of this plot is because the story is so uneven it's senseless! It just goes on and on to almost nowhere until it abruptly ends! I'm still trying to figure out what this pointless story is about.
The storyline has several issues going on, none of which has a conclusive finish. It jumps from a runaway girl with frigidity issues to an escaped German pilot downed in England and hidden by this same girl to her getting involved with an RAF pilot to her ridiculous reasons for running away....and then quick as a flash a whole bunch of stuff happens within five pages to an inglorious dive to the end of the book. I kept reading because I was seeking a plot!
Whoever edited this poorly conceived book needs to be fired! It's hard to believe it's a finished product. It's five short stories in one, and I only gave it "a" star to be able to post my opinion in a review.
Enough said! Not worth my time nor effort to have read it....a total waste of my time!
Working as a land girl, Hannah doesn't expect to find love when she visits the local pub for the first time. She also doesn't expect to hide a German pilot when he is downed, but when her conscience pushes her to save the man from death, she does it.
I liked Hannah, and how this story was written. Her backstory is learned through small hints that are dropped throughout the story until the end when it is all confirmed. The secondary characters are fun and memorable, my favorite of them all being the cat.
For me, this one toed the line of being clean. Technically, it is but the unmarried sex that does occur lessened my enjoyment. There were also a few typos and area where the wrong punctuation was used. Also, the quickness of Hannah's relationship with jack seemed unlikely.
For readers who enjoy novels about the second world war, this just might be up your alley.
The good points are the insights into everyday living during WWII. Spoilt by silly spelling mistakes, he’d/he’s, then/than, we’re/were. It’s an OK story but rather far fetched considering the feelings and emotions of most people involved in war. A broken arm that sometimes is restrictive and other times seems to have no limits on her ability to do things.
loved it hannah is a land girl during the WW. full of heartache for her. this book had me gripped all the way through. this is my first by this author. look for more
Hannah’s War 1941 Essex England This book took place during the war in England. It is a story about a young gal from the Land Army, and the RAF base near by the area she worked. She was an entitled girl who was hiding from her unusual and cruel past. She meets a young man from the RAF who rather captures her heart, which she is reluctant to give, as she felt no man really wanted her due to a mishap from a former cruel encounter. She learns that the young Flight Lieutenant she liked was flying a mission back to old Blighty, when they were in a dogfight with the German Luftwaffe over England right near the base. During that battle, Jack’s plane was hit, but so were some of the spitfires. Jack’s close flying mates didn’t make it. Unfortunately Hannah learns of one of the Luftwaffe who is hiding out. Jack misunderstands her disappearances and believes the worst, and Hannah decides she won’t push his attitude, in order to retain her dignity. This book is full of feelings, understandings, and preconceived beliefs. Hannah has a difficult time understanding why she feels and does what is unusual and risky in the time of war, contrary to her country’s political beliefs and stipulations. An excellent book that makes the reader think about how they would handle a similar situation.
This book isn't on Goodreads for some reason under this title, The Land Girl's Secret but I did find it under Hannah's War and I posted my review there.
Such a great story. I enjoyed it tremendously.
Hannah is a land girl working farms to help with the war effort until one night she has an accident and she can't work on the farm until she is healed. Living in a town close to an RAF base they can hear planes take off and then count them when they get back. Little does Hannah know she is going to fall in love with an RAF pilot but something happens one night when a plane doesn't come back to base. But Hannah stumbles upon a German pilot who has been shot down. What does she do? Does she protect him from being executed on the spot? Does she turn him in? Will she be caught protecting him and be called a traitor?
Fenella J. Miller has a wonderful way of weaving a wonderful WWII historical fiction novel. I have read a few of them and I love every one of them. I couldn't put this one down. The characters are wonderful.
Not sure of the kindle version is perhaps missing part of the book but it was a very unrealistic read, the characters acted strangely often it felt like they had some kind of personality disorder their views and behaviour changed dramatically in an instant. Also reference was made to things that never got mentioned in the book previously (hence I’m wondering if pages were missing) like the name of her first fiancé where “she can not even say his name in her mind” yet all of a sudden her current fiancé uses the name of the previous one? All in all it had potential and some parts were good but to me felt very disjointed which made me not enjoy it.
Just one question - if Jack is a Blenheim bomber pilot, why are there Spitfire fighters in the cover art? I'm also guessing they're the kind that have four-bladed propellers as well. Those weren't introduced until 1943 (Mark Nines). Get your facts straight!
The author doesn't follow her own story so some parts of the story don't make sense. Also the proof reading isn't very thorough so the story can be hard to follow. Apart from that it is a nice gentle story.
Great book. Lovely ww2 story of Hannah as she works as a land girl in the day and goes to dances in the evenings, There she meets working class pilot jack. Jack likes Hannah and wants her as his sweetheart. In the meantime jack goes on missions over Germany will he survive to come back to Hannah, in time hanna finds and hides a German pilot what will jacks reaction be to this will it destroy his feelings for Hannah...
