It was a cute sports romance read. Nice writing style, characters, storyline. Yet, I couldn’t be invested in it because there wasn’t anything to thrill me.
This was my first hockey romance read. Though I do consider this a reasonable read, I felt like it lacked depth to the main characters and had a weird ending. Parts of this book were funny and cute, while other parts just felt cringey. It is a very easy to read book and I appreciate the way the author wrote it. I really wanted to learn more about the characters past, so I could get to know them better. The setting fit the story, which I liked! it was cute, spicy, romantic and humorous at times.
This book is about a female main character and a male main character. The male character is a hockey player named Colby, who plays for the Chicago Red Tails. The female character, whose name is Carissa, is a marketing representative for the same hockey team that Colby plays in. Before she became the representative, she met Colby by accident at a store and they had a debacle over some cereal. She did not know he was a hockey player and he was in disbelief that she didn’t recognize him.
As the story begins to unravel, they find things in common and form a bond, which later turns into something more serious. However, could this serious bond that they have ruin him? Do they end up together or being swept away from one another? Overall, I rate this a three out of five stars and do think it is a good read. This book contains explicit sexual content and an enemies to lovers trope.
Thank you to NetGalley, author Susan Renee, and Page & Vine publishing for this updated copy in exchange for my honest review of this digital book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I don‘t have very high standards but this was somehow even worse than expected. The characters went from „omg I can‘t stop thinking about you“ to „f*ck you, I hate you“ within like 3 minutes, every second page. Just💀
Thank you to the author for this ARC. From the first chapter, I was cracking up! The witty banter between the two MCs in this book was amazing. Carissa was such a fun FMC, but I found myself getting frustrated with Colby so often. I honestly felt like she deserved better than him. That is the reason I gave this 4 stars. Overall, it was a good time, and I'll read more in the series.
My first book by this author and it was a delight!
I loved the UST and snark and banter between Carissa and Colby, they were so fun and their meet cute was adorable and funny. The dialogue between them was a winner for me in this romance. There was some nice humor, some nice steam, and plenty of other guys on Colby's team that need stories!
Those who know me know that I'm not a fan of miscommunication and the big misunderstanding, and that was the main reason for the conflict in the last quarter of the book. So, while it did give some drama and angst for things, it also felt so quickly written in? I wish Colby had been more levelheaded in how he perceived Carissa's "actions" (that weren't hers.)
I received a gifted copy of this book for an instagram book tour. My thoughts are my own.
There has never been a more aptly named book than this one. I honestly should have stopped when the author used the wrong "their" in the dedication. There were quite a few hockey things wrong too and it was just kind of a blah book for me.
The characters were somewhat interesting but not enough to have me continue the series. Like the whole thing starts because the dude is so stressed out about his Lucky Charms. I get the reasoning but maybe plan better? They don't magically disappear. And there are other stores ... you're in Chicago, I'm sure there's a 24/7 store open with you cereal. You shouldn't absolutely loathe someone because she wouldn't give you her box of cereal. Like how entitled can you be?
Not to mention the kind of cheating. Like you were so pissed at her about something (I can't even remember what) that you were ready to take two girls to your room WHEN SHE WAS IN THE HOTEL. That's a dick move even when she's not there but even more so when she is. And it's not like you weren't doing anything with them in the bar. You spent an hour with them and at least kissed one on the neck ... I'm betting there was even more done. Colby is lucky Carissa even looked at him after she caught him pulling that shit. I can't even with it.
Actually the more I write this review, the more I dislike Colby so I dropped it from my original three stars to two stars. Maybe if the captain actually acted like a leader, it would have stayed at three. But he didn't so he doesn't deserve that extra star.
I loved the forbidden love aspect of this story!! Carissa and Colby have an unfortunate meet cute in a grocery store and bicker over the last box of Lucky Charms! Carrissa happens to be the new social media manager for the Chicago Redtails. Colby is the team captain and finding his luck has run out lately after losing the past couple of hockey games. The banter and enemies to lovers aspect of the story was so good.
The hockey romance in this book was such a thrill! The forbidden nature of their relationship added an intense level of tension that made every moment feel high-stakes. I loved watching the characters navigate the challenges that came with their secret connection. It kept me on edge, wondering how they would make it work despite everything standing in their way.
What really made this story stand out was how tender and sweet their relationship felt. Even with all the tension, there was this beautiful softness between them that made their bond feel real. The chemistry was undeniable, but it was their emotional connection that truly touched my heart. It was the perfect mix of passion and genuine care for each other.
This book offered a fantastic balance of intensity and warmth. It was exciting yet uplifting, leaving me with a smile as I turned the last page. A truly heartwarming read!
It was so good. It had a good amount of romance, spice and laugh. It was really hard to put it down.
Colby and Carissa (Smalls) are perfect “enemies to lovers” but “grumpy and sunshine” works as well. They might not start on a good note but the chemistry they had was hard to ignore; not only for them but for everyone around too. They worked so good together - in and outside work. Colby might be a hard ice to break but hey, the girl had a “spark” and he had no chance haha.
Ps. I just hoped for an epilogue like “years later” but maybe there will be some mentions of them in other books.
Off Your Game is a steamy hockey romance, the first in the Chicago Red Tails series by Susan Renee.
Carissa Smallson starts her new job tomorrow and can’t believe the audacity of the man preventing her from finishing her grocery shopping and get home to bed. After refusing to give him the last box of lucky charms, as hot as he was she hopes she doesn’t see him again!
Carissa’s new job is the social media manager for the Chicago Red Tails. To her surprise the broody man she met at the grocery store is Colby the captain of the team and he’ll do anything to avoid her.
Carissa and Colby are thrown together through team events and eventually find some common ground. As they spend more time together there is definitely an attraction. They have both sworn off relationships but can somehow see a future together until Carissa’s past comes back to haunt her and Colby isn’t sure she’s the woman he thought she was.
This was a good steamy hockey romance. There were a few bumps including some cringey moments between the main characters. He was also over the top grumpy and then all of a sudden wasn’t. I would rate this 3.5 stars and will definitely read the next instalment!
Disclaimer: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Off Your Game is book one in the Chicago Red Tails series. It’s an enemies to lovers, hockey romance following team captain Colby and the team social media manager Carissa. After butting heads at a grocery store over Lucky Charms cereal, they instantly form a strong dislike for each other. As they are forced to work together, they slowly both let down their guards and realize their true feelings for each other.
This was such a fast-paced read and I breezed through it in one sitting!
What I loved: I’m a sucker for a good hockey romance, and this one delivered on the vibes. The enemies to lovers angle was solid, with plenty of banter and build-up. Their relationship grew at a good pace and I could really feel the emotion coming through both of them. The hockey team had great chemistry with each other and I loved seeing their interactions with Clarissa.
What didn’t work as well for me: While I enjoyed the overall dynamic, I couldn’t ignore how toxic their relationship was, particularly from Colby. Their very first argument was way too aggressive. Colby yelling at Carissa (who was a stranger at the time) over cereal was more red flag than meet-cute, and unfortunately, that pattern continued. Nearly every disagreement between them involved Colby raising his voice at Clarissa and jumping to conclusions instead of having a regular conversation. I understand that he’s under pressure and has some underlying trauma, but his behaviors were not okay. It became a pattern that took away from the romance. Honestly, Colby needs therapy to work through his trauma.
Without spoilers, the climax of the story really solidified the fact that Colby never fully trusted Carissa, even as they were supposedly growing closer. That lack of trust made it hard for me to root for them as a couple in the long run. I can see them breaking up within a few months.
With the writing style as well, there were a few borderline and fully misogynistic comments within the chapters. One particular instance I remember is the use of the word “tramp” to describe a woman. These instances made me pause for a moment and put a sour taste in my mouth. Normally in instances where I do a half star raring I round up, but due to this I rounded down.
I wanted so badly to DNF this book at 20% and then at 60% and on… but I’m not a quitter The characters were so dull and the 100000 pages of spice is just so unnecessary.
This hockey romance brings plenty of humor, sizzling tension, and competitive banter. However, while it delivers on entertainment, it also comes with some frustrating elements. The story kicks off with a meet-cute that is more aggravating than charming—our hero, a professional hockey player, loses out on his good luck charm (a box of cereal) to a woman who refuses his money or flirtatious offers. This woman, Carissa Smallson, later turns out to be the new marketing rep for his team, setting up the classic “just my luck” scenario. What follows is a mix of workplace tension, reluctant attraction, and personal growth. There are elements of the book that work well. The banter between the main characters is sharp and entertaining. Carissa is a strong, confident lead who doesn’t let the arrogant hockey player steamroll her. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the author successfully builds tension between them, making their eventual romance feel earned. However, the male lead, Colly, often comes across as toxic rather than endearingly grumpy. His behavior at times feels immature, and some of the drama surrounding their relationship doesn’t feel genuine or well-developed. Instead of organic obstacles, there are moments that feel forced for the sake of tension, making certain conflicts frustrating rather than engaging. Overall, this book is an enjoyable, lighthearted read with some standout moments, especially for those who love hockey romances. However, if you’re looking for a male lead with strong character growth and conflicts that feel more authentic, this one may leave you a bit disappointed.
Firstly the MMC is kind of a HUGE asshole? Like he’s so mean? Over a box of cereal he started sexually harassing her?? And he didn’t even apologize?? And not like hot asshole vibes, he gives off straight MEAN vibes AND THEN SHE APOLOGIZED TO HIM???? Doesn’t make sense.
AND THEN AFTER KISSING HER AND GHOSTING HER, HE GOES TO THE BAR IN THE HOTEL THAT THEY ARE BOTH STAYING IN AND PICKS UP 2 WOMEN???? SHE TELLS HIM TO TAKE HIS HANDS OFF HER AND HE IGNORES HER???? I would have slapped him as well. And then he has THE AUDACITY to say “you feel how hard I am for you” WHEN HE WAS LITERALLY ABOUT TO SLEEP WITH 2 OTHER WOMAN? Okay my guy. Sure thing. Fuck you very much.
And then he goes around and hurts her, literally SCREAMS at her, and then turns around and says “I know you’ll never hurt me” but he hurt her so many times???? No thank you. This is such a toxic relationship I can’t.
This book is making me so heated, the FMC deserves so much better and if I was her friend I would have really slapped some sense into her.
ALL THAT BEING SAID - there were some cute moments, I enjoyed the writing style and the side characters very entertaining though so I’ll probably continue the with the series🥰 (Thank you NetGalley and Page and Vine for the ARC🫶🏼 ilysm)
“Some people bring so much light into your world that even when they’re gone, their light stays with you.”
This was such a fun sports romance book. I wasn’t ready to give up the Red Tails hockey team yet so I’m glad I can jump right into book two. I’m still laughing about how Carissa and Colby originally met. I’m dying for some Lucky Charms right now. Carissa was bold and confident and I loved that about her. She had her own personal problems going on but she never showed the weight of that to others. Colby had the weight of the world on his shoulders and he definitely showed that to others. He was a grumpy team captain. I liked seeing his softer side as he got to know Carissa. I enjoyed reading about Carissa traveling with the team and how much fun they all had together. The spice level was top notch but the overall romance side of the story was sweet. I loved the moment towards the end between Colby and his brother. I had real tears in my eyes. Grief is never easy. I was really hooked on this book the entire time that I read it in two days!
First off thank you to NetGalley and Susan Renee for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/4 🌶️🌶️/5
I will say when I first started this book I did not like the writing style and I was struggling. Well once I got about 15% in I was hooked! I finished this book in one sitting and absolutely loved it!
The fact that we started off arguing over lucky charms🍀,was incredible. I also happened to be reading this on St Patrick’s Day which just made it better.
If you like hockey romances, enemies to lovers, and forbidden romances this is for you! I was feeling all types of emotions while reading this book. I laughed, I cried, I giggled which to me is just the absolute best. 🩵
All in all I highly recommend this book and I can wait to get my own hard copy once it’s released! 🏒⛸️
I enjoyed reading Off Your Game by Susan Renee. It was such a fun hockey romance filled with angst, banter, and heartbreak.

Carissa and Colby have undeniable chemistry right off the bat, starting at the local super market. And they both complement each other perfectly. Carissa is a very sassy and bold, whereas Colby can tend to be quiet but also broody. They do have a little bit of a push - pull dynamic throughout the book but once they give into their relationship more they seriously become the cutest.
Thank you NetGalley and Susan Renee for allowing me to read this early. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this book! I liked the struggles both Colby and Carissa had in their personal lives. I liked the twist with carissa and what was happening. I would of loved to see more of Colby towards the end but I really enjoyed it. I liked the writing style, I liked the plot, and I enjoyed watching them grow, I'd of loved to see more of it in this book!
This is a fun, flirty sports romance that has the perfect mix of humor, heat and emotional depth without feeling too heavy. Cam and Lila’s chemistry is full of sharp banter, heart and it's the type of connection you root for its light, swoony and easy to want more of. This is the type of book that you sit down to read and the next thing you know you've finished the whole thing!
audio-there's lots of different kind of hockey romance is out there this story it was a good story I mean it was entertaining I enjoyed it she had all kinds of struggles he had struggles so together it formed a really good story it became extremely emotional bringing tears to my eyes so to stay it was a well entertaining story it really was it did a lot.
A very entertaining enemies to lovers hockey romance!!! While the miscommunication is a little frustrating at times, the forbidden aspect of the relationship was executed perfectly. The book moves at a fast pace, and while it felt at times that the romance itself was lacking, and not much is actually happening in the plot itself, the banter between the team makes up for this and reminded me why I love hockey romances. 4⭐️
Tropes - Forbidden romance - Secret romance - Grumpy mc - He falls first - Reformed playboy
this book was super cute. the only complaint i have with it is mostly regarding the ending. it felt weird and rushed. i would have also enjoyed learning more about the characters themselves rather than just focusing on the romance
