Spencer Waterman is a desperately unhappy man. He's lost everything: his job, his house, and even his wife, who is openly cheating on him. But he's still young, and all he needs is a chance to start over, a chance for redemption.
The solution comes in an unexpected form: a shed full of black widow spiders behind their rental house. It isn't long, however, before Spencer's discovery threatens to take away everything he holds dear, including the beautiful girl with the oceanblue eyes.
Spencer Waterman learns too late that some doors should remain forever closed, and some dark secrets should never see the light of day.
This is a solid 4 star book. It was difficult to put down.
The author has a very engaging writing style that pulled me in and a good build up of suspense despite the slow pace.
The only reasons this is not getting 5 stars is:
1. The pacing. I didn't mind the slow pace because it was still exciting. Reaching 25 percent before the spiders actually get a role in the story, however, is very slow for a monster book and will deter me from rereading it. That I had not yet given up on the book by then just speaks for itself of how much I enjoyed the writing as a whole.
2. There are some inconsistencies that seems sloppy. The focus of the narrative shifts depending on what the author finds interesting and relevant to write about. I.e. The baby plays a big role... Until it doesn't and you're left with the feeling that the author forgot that the protagonist even had a baby.
3. Some repeat themes.
4. Could really have enjoyed a lot more monster action.
Too bad there is no sequel even though we get a teaser at the end of the book. Would definitely read the second one.
I don't know why I do this to myself. I'm going to be freaked out for days after reading this. Definitely a twisted take on what happens when you get bit by a spider and all the chaos that follows. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, I thought they were all....two dimensional and flat. The spiders were definitely creepy
