New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shannon Stacey lives with her husband and two sons in New England, where her favorite activities are writing romance and really random tweets when she’s not riding her ATV. She loves mud, books, football & watching way too much TV.
What a great surprise it was to discover, last time I went to pick up a book order at the bookstore, that Shannon Stacey wrote new novels in the Kowalskis' series !
If like me you read the series, you might remember Lisa and Mike. Well, the new books follow the next generation, their kids who are now adults.
Rob Kowalski is the youngest. With his brothers, they bought the campground in New Hampshire where they spent all their summers growing up. The siblings agreed there will be no fraternalisation with the campers. But for Rob, temptation arrives in the name of Hannah Shelby, a true-crime podcaster on a break from work to reflect upon some personal and professional decisions.
The thing is that restarting a well loved series meant that I had high expectations for this book. I'm happy to tell that those expectations were met for me. I felt like I had the same fun and feeling from the "original" books but without the impression that I was reading the same stuff. Sure, the ending is a bit rushed but nothing for me to ruin the pleasure.
The Kowalskis Book 11 is the next generation of Kowalskis. All can be read as standalone.
Rob’s book takes us back to the scene of our favorite campground and my favorite family. Shannon Stacey’s contemporary romances always have a touch of humor interwoven with beautiful every day romances that focus on relationship building with a little heat. Rob and Hannah’s story is a great reintroduction.
Brother Joey’s short novella is A Kowalski Thanksgiving of Doom which was available on Stacey’s Insta in November.
Two things about this beginning of next generation Kowalskis.
1.) There is a free novella that kick starts the next gen that you can get via Book Funnel on SS's Instagram account. The link still lives which I thank the author for because I searched for about a half hour before I started looking at older reviews of this book where I finally found the answer I needed about Joey's romance with Ellie. This romance is referenced A LOT in this book so if reading a complete series is a thing for you... there you go. Or just message me and I'll send the link to you.
2.) I wanted to love this a lot. I truly did. I realized when my reading slowed down to epic slug levels that I wasn't really into it which made me focus on what I was missing (see #1). I had been such a Bobby fan (weren't we all?) in the earlier books that I felt I was pre-destined to adore this. It just didn't hit for me as a romance. It could be the heroine. I did feel there was a lot about the four brothers and their dynamics and their fighting which got really old for me. I know there was some of that involved in the original series so I think I see what the author was going for. In the end though, the romance just wasn't for me.
Rated 3 Thank You Book Funnel For That Missing Novella Stars
I absolutely love this book. I laughed out loud a bunch of times, and I so appreciate being able to do that. But not only did Shannon Stacey deliver the laughs, she had me sobbing during a scene toward the end. No spoilers, but the scene harkens back to a conversation between Rob and Hannah a little before the midpoint of the book. Omg. Sobbing. This book is excellent and gave me all the feels.
I quit reading this story about halfway through—too boring, in my opinion. The only thing I liked about it was the setting was unique; nobody else has written a camping romance that I have yet to read. But nothing was going on. No mysteries, no hanky panky or even kissing by the halfway point. There are just people telling the protagonists what they “should” or “shouldn’t” do. Grown-ups should decide for themselves!
First off so great getting the next generation of Kowalskis! I loved that the brothers bought their favorite camp grounds and are working together. Rob finding his forever with Hannah was so fun to read! I can’t wait for next book!
Hannah and Rob (Bobby) were insta-attracted, but the no-fraternization rule gets in the way. I felt like they needed more time together on the page, but the Kowalski craziness takes over. It’s fun to get to know these brothers as adults!
