The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer.
His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all considered to be within the genre of literary nonsense.
Oxford scholar, Church of England Deacon, University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, academic author of learned theses, gifted pioneer of portrait photography, colourful writer of imaginative genius and yet a shy and pedantic man, Lewis Carroll stands pre-eminent in the pantheon of inventive literary geniuses.
One of my all times favorite book What I loved about this particular publication is the quiz at the end. I thought I would know all the answers , I didn’t ! Great animations - originals . A +
We love that this is the original text with original first edition illustrations by John Tenniel. It really sets the tone and character for the book and helps keep our younger ones engaged. Certainly a fun read for parents, the wordsmithing of English from 1865 is a trip - for me requiring a little “pre-read” to get the articulation, pronunciation and pacing just right. As well, I really appreciated the layout of the text, segregating the poetic parts into paragraphs and segments that made it much easier to navigate. It is such a well known classic story, I can enthusiastically remark this is a worthy edition for your famiy library.
Wild, crazy antics fill Alice's world where sense has no foot on which to stand. Nevertheless, intrepid Alice anchors herself as a voice of reason, while maintaining the mental flexibility to go with the flow. Despite all opposition, our heroine navigates a bizarre realm. Timeless illustrations breathe life into the story, creating images that would the foundational inspiration for both art and comedy for decades, maybe centuries. Definitive edition for fans of the tale whether digital or print.
When I put 4-star review it’s usually not that I didn’t like something about it. I just keep my 5 for feeling shattered and transformed. This book twists reality and that is pretty enjoyable and uncomfortable at the same time. Like it gives you a feedback on your thinking. It makes fun of your rationality. It’s not arguing what’s rational, it’s saying it doesn’t matter. Journey into the Wonderland is full of absurdity which I think requires the most wit. Here we go with another paradox.
Some of the classics aren’t the easiest reads by modern book standards. I hadn’t read this one until now and, while it dragged a little at the start, it was fun wandering through wonderland with Alice. It was nice to see the original art along the way in this edition and I’m glad I chose it for joining Alice on this adventure.
Obviously I'm not in the intended demographic for this book, but I felt I'd missed out by not reading it when I was a child. Having read it now, I can't say that it blew me away. It's a decent children's book, but there were books I read as a child that I enjoyed a whole lot more. Does that make me a bad person? Perhaps, but I'm inclined to think that it's probably just my age!
This book was an easy read which stimulated memories of reading it in my childhood. The whole time I was trying to figure out where Lewis Carroll's imagined these ideas. This book is a true Classic.
Obligatory 5 stars because it’s such a sweet classic story. So fun to actually read it in full since I had not previously. I love the whimsy and simplicity of the story and how curious Alice is. Very fun quick read, definitely want to read more similar to this.
