This beautiful book, in the backdrop of a university, is an addictive page-turner. Ryn - Camryn- our beautiful FMC has won my heart! She faces abandonment issues and lives with Sensory Processing Disorder! Her journey to unravel the mystery surrounding her parents’ death! She deals with the difficulties life has thrown her way, the best she can! Her Professor, Dr Drayer is the newest Morally-Grey MMC on the block! He is entangled in her past, eminent in her present! We ride along with Ryn in this emotional, stressful journey! The spice is brilliant!! The conclusion is perfect! The author has a way with her words, and I cant wait to read her other works!!
So I haven't found a JJ book that I didn't love but I have to admit that this one is probably my absolute favorite of the bunch. I loved that the book has Sensory Processing in it because I honestly don't think I've ever read anything that discusses it. I was hooked the minute I finished the prologue and I honestly got annoyed anytime I had to stop reading. I loved the creepy vibe the book gives off until we start getting tiny answers as we need them. Ryn is probably my favorite female character in a long time. She is so real and relatable. I love her inner dialogue and her sass. Drayer is of course the moody, morally gray dark, broody character we all need in our lives. Brennan the ever loyal character that we don't want to like but grudgingly do.
The spice in this one is perfection but and I can't believe I'm going to say this, even better is the tension and build up. The banter between Ryn and Drayer is the element that makes it all work so well. They have this hate thing on point. The love triangle dynamic in this one works really well and is actually a lot of fun to watch play out. Brennan, while sweet, is probably the most oblivious character in the whole book... but I love it. Ryn is this unapologetic character and she owns who she is faults and all. Also can I just say the jokes JJ writes into this one are chef's kiss level. I mean I want to tell you something I didn't love about the book but, I can't... JJ really turned the romance epilogue on it's head in this one and it's not something I'll forget about anytime soon.
I mean and if the romance wasn't enough, which I've been harping on this whole time... we have a stalker. We also have this issue of our mom's past and our dad's untimely death... both of which we are trying to understand and solve at the same time. We keep coming home to our apartment doors open or feeling like someone is following us... I am telling you guys this book balances all of the elements so well. If you don't at least download and read this one when it releases you are doing yourself a huge disservice because it is so good.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for a review.
I love dark romance and was so pleasantly surprised by both how dark and thrilling this book was, and how great the spice was. The main character Ryn has Sensory Processing Disorder, and the way everything is described through her perspective and so heavily focused on the senses made the whole book wildly immersive.
The thriller aspects of the book were intriguing, Ryn is not only trying to uncover her mother’s secrets but also uncover the truth of her father’s death. The inter tangling web of lies, truth and forbidden romance was expertly woven in my opinion. The ratio of plot to spice is chefs kiss. 🤌🏻
The dynamic between Ryn and Vaughn was one for the books. As a dark romance, Sycophantia was everything one could want in a book. The tangled web that was woven between the two protagonists was exceptional.
Ryn was a badass in ever since of the word. Her personality was definitely "hold no bars." The fact that Ryn was faced with tragedy, not once but twice, really added depth to her character's persona. As she navigated grad school, she became the assistant to someone who was considered a suspect in her parent's demise… the beginning of insanity at best. And it gets even more bizarre as Ryn adds a peer to her list of "things to do," intensifying the strain between her and Drayer.
Vaughn, the quintessential MMF of a dark romance, evolves throughout the story. Initially, he is Ryn's dark enemy, but as the plot unfolds, he transforms into an obsession that chases her. Ultimately, Vaughn becomes the one thing she needs the most, leaving the readers with a sense of anticipation.
The twist at the end of the book is a game-changer, leaving the readers' minds blown. It's a turn of events that no one could have predicted, adding a layer of suspense and intrigue to the story.
But some secrets are not meant to be revealed, and Ryn's pursuit for knowledge could cost her more than she ever imagined.
What a read. This is my first time reading a book by JJ Smeck, and I'm here for it. Such an intriguing writing style, I was captivated from the first chapter, and on the edge of my seat throughout to an ending you don't see coming. Ryn and Vaughn each possess morally ambiguous qualities, and their playful exchanges made for an engaging read. I loved the neurospicy rep in this book, portrayed in such a unique way!
Tropes: - Morally Grey MMC - Enemies to lovers - Forced proximity - Teacher/Student - Age gap
Our girl has done it again. I am in absolute awe of JJ Smeck, her writing, and the stories her brain makes. This bad boy hits with all of the spice, angst, and suspense! And of course, the humor and whit we have all come to know and love from our favorite indie author. Another smash! Congrats my friend 🥹. Everyone run and get your copy!!
As always, JJ brings to us an amazing story filled with beautifully flawed , real characters that you can connect with. I really loved the importance of senses in this one and the careful attention to detail of the main characters unique traits. Spice : through the roof.
JJ Please never stop

“I would love to be dominated by him. I’m sure I’d never experienced anything so intense in my life. I’m confident that he would know exactly how to give me what I so desperately need.”
This book gave me sleepless nights, for 2 reasons. I wanted to finish the book and couldn’t put it down for one. And the tension in this book is through the roof. Sycophantia is a dark romantic triller set in anacademic background. It’s everything you didn’t know you needed in a dark romance and more. The plot is full of twists and turns that had me on edge. And I loved it so much!
Camryn, our wonderfully written FMC has a Sensory Processing Disorder and JJ Smeck did an amazing job in describing the perspective of Camryn and focusing on the way Camryn senses all. The way this is done gives a deeper and a more intense feeling whilst reading.
If you like morally gray MC then you're in for a raid, having a FMC and MMC who both have a lot of morally gray aspects. The bantering between the main characters and the tension building up to a truly dark romance is what made this book an instant 5 stars. I totally recommend this book if you’re a lover of dark romance books!
I can't even hate him, I cannot even hate the fucking asshole. I still want to sit on his goddamn face. I'm insane, that's it. I'm diagnosing myself as clinically insane.
💖 Drayer & Ryn 💖
I INHALED this book. I could not put it down. While love triangles are usually not my favorite trope, I absolutely loved how JJ Smeck utilized it in this book. I love the contrast between the fast burn and slow burn and it kept the book spicy from start to finish without taking away from the plot.
I don't think I have ever loved a FMC more than Ryn. She is the epitome of neurodivergent chaos and she spoke to my soul. Her inner monologue felt so realistic and relatable. I'm not even sure if I fell in love with the book, or just Ryn. Truly a phenomenally written character.
The psychology rep in this book was phenomenal. There's mental health, there's research, there's sensory processing disorder. As someone who has psychology as a special interest, this book did such a beautiful job of accurately reflecting manifestation of neurodivergence and MH conditions while incorporating psychological research aspects. Literally the definition of dark academia and as the nerd I am, I devoured every second.
Honestly, this would have been a 5 star book for me but the ending lacked luster. I wouldn't say I was disappointed by the ending, but I don't feel like it lived up to the rest of the book. Regardless, I will love Ryn to the day I die and recommend this book to anyone who loves a hot af professor x student romance.

Holy wow.. this book was interesting!! This is a dark thriller ish romance with twists and turns that will leave you questioning everything! The sensory deprivation and sensitivity was fascinating to read about in such a spicy way! I really enjoyed the FMC and MMC’s banter and how they both had morally grey aspects to themselves. When you finally get towards the end of the book and get the answers to all the questions you will be left with your mind blown! I know I was! Get it! You won’t be disappointed!
Y’all this book…whew this book! This book was absolutely amazing! This book had a ton of tropes that I love, while also pushing some boundaries into the dark romance side of things. I loved the Sensory issues that JJ brought to life on the pages of this book. Camryn was not like any FMC I have ever read before. I absolutely loved Vaughn! He was deliciously morally grey who was absolutely obsessed with Camryn. I really enjoyed the mystery in trying to figure out the truth of what happened to Camryn’s father and Drayer’s relationship with her mother. Everything about this book was just so good and kept me turning the pages. And the spice…holy cow the spice! JJ is smut royalty and no one will convince me otherwise! If you’re into dark romance with some twists and turns check this one out, but check the TWs!
This deserves all the stars. I'm not even over it. This is definitely a book that will stay in your head rent-free. I'm not really a dark romance girly, but @j.j.smeck has converted me. This is your reminder to check out all of her books. Wow. This was a rollercoaster ride. I felt all the things. I really like the maturity of the writing. Jj's books are different than those I typically read, and I am so in love. All of the characters started off unlikable. I loved the 2 MCs by the end of the book. They grew on me. They had their set personalities, but you could see them grow and see their depth the further you read. There was also the sensory aspect of it was so interesting to me. I also love that there was a small mystery aspect, too. I love a good mystery! Okay, now let's talk about the spice 🤤🔥🔥 dayummmm This was spicy! I freaking loved every minute! I definitely needed to be doused in water after reading some of those scenes! The ending absolutely wrecked me. I'm not okay with it. While I loved this book, it's definitely so important to make sure to read the trigger warnings!
✵ I truly love JJ Smeck’s writing. The detail in every moment allows the words to completely take over your mind and drop you right into the story. Completely hooked from the beginning Sycophantica is an amazing read. This beautifully complex story filled with tension and mystery unfolds at the perfect pace. ✵ Ryn is a top shelf FMC for me. I haven’t enjoyed one like her in a really long time. She’s incredibly relatable and her inner dialogue is emotionally consuming. Her mind is chaotic and I loved feeling all the deep feels. Drayer, our broody, morally gray MMC is fabulously, dark, mysterious, and so sexy. I truly enjoyed the character development. Everything we learn adds layers of angst and depth to the story. Their banter is sexy, funny and emotive. The intimacy is written so well providing intense passion and cathartic moments. ✵Sycophantia is a dark, academia, love triangle, age gap, enemies to lovers, neurodivergent, romance story that I highly recommend.
Ryn McKee is on a quest to uncover her family's dark past, which pulls her into a world of forbidden romance and secrets. As the daughter of a legendary professor, Ryn is torn between her enigmatic advisor, Dr. Drayer, and a passionate peer. The portrayal of sensory processing disorder adds a unique and immersive element. The banter and tension between Ryn and Drayer are perfectly executed, making their dynamic irresistible. JJ Smeck's intricate plot, filled with betrayal, desire, and unexpected twists, kept me hooked from start to finish. The characters are deeply flawed yet relatable, and the dark academia setting is compelling. This book is a must-read for fans of dark romance and thrilling mysteries.
I want to shout from the rooftops how much I loved this book! As always JJ delivers these dark flawed characters that you can't help but simultaneously hate and love. Drayer is such a dick and yet I was like "heck ya, I hope you get the girl" 😂 I am unwell!
This was also the first book I've read that had representation and showed sensory processing disorder and it was a really unique element of the main characters.

Absolutely enthralled with ryn and Vaughn. The passion, the tension? It had ME shaking at the knees wondering where they would go next. Brennan’s possessiveness was NOT it, knowing that Ryn just wanted to be FWB’s. The playlist? Chefs kiss. Thank you JJ smeck for this absolute gem of a novel and I pray to satan there’s a second book behind this one 💗💗💗

Professor/student alert! This book is hot! It includes lots of great trauma representation, neurospicy components, and coping mechanisms (both good and bad). Surprisingly, it also included a whole level of mystery and suspense. This is not your average spicy read! I loved the story and did not expect the ending one bit! Buy it today and read it immediately!
This was my first time reading a book by this author and I’m happy to say it won’t be the last! I wasn’t expecting to get so much out of this read. She gave me a little bit of thriller, mystery, spice, romance, enemies to lovers, love triangle, forced proximity, and characters to love ( drool over) and hate. The whole thing with Ryn having sensory issues was such a different concept for a book and for me but I loved it! Such great pacing I can’t wait to read more of her books!
I absolutely devoured this book. JJ Smeck has stepped away from her norm and brought us to the world of Dark Academia. Lies, deceit, suspense, sex…sign me up!
The psychological aspects of this book and sensory processing were captivating, add in a love triangle, hot professor and age gap… I couldn’t put it down.
What is it about the way JJ writes that has me instantly rooting for the “bad guy”? She has an amazing ability to make you see beyond the tropes of a character with her realistic personalities.
Ryn struggles with sensory issues and has been chosen, unwillingly, as a student assistant to smoking hot Dr. Drayer. The only issue? He was accused of killing her father!
I ate this up! I enjoyed the writing and could picture myself in the environment. The pacing was good, spice-fantastic, and the sexual tension was chef’s kiss! Read the trigger warnings before proceeding. There were also some twists at the end that I did not see coming!
I really liked this and would recommend to those who like professor x student, dark academia, enemies to lovers, and forced proximity!
So thankful to the author for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Review: It's a really interesting hook to this....our FMC (Ryn) ends up PA'ing to the Professor that was initially looked into for having killed her father (plus had an affair with her mother) ten years prior. The awkwardness and seething anger she has being in his proximity is ripe for drama.
There is some of that but it never quite dove into the multifaceted unpacking that the situation was germinating with. Dreyer (MMC) is described as imposing, dark hair, arm tattoos, handsome and stern. But beyond that, we don't get a good sense of him and his motivations. He shows up at a club and randomly decides to "finger" her in the middle of the dance floor and is very proud of it. And Ryn (FMC) doesn't seem as bothered by it as one should be afterwards and instead just has sex with her classmate to erase this and other close interactions with him.
I didn't connect with her much, as she was quite promiscuous. If she finds sex so casual perhaps that's why his repeated advances didn't bother her so much? I felt the psychological effects of what this man represents should have more repercussions to her. And I would’ve liked a more complex Dreyer. He was more two dimensional for me. The struggle of being attacted to this girl which represents such past pain to him, I would've liked to see that manifest more.
Ryn's inner dialog is a lot of her being attracted to him then chastising herself, having sex with her friend, having flirtayions with Dreyer and that repeats through most of the book with not much headway in the deeper heads pace of these characters. They're both just into sex all the time any way so there's not much tension really. And the way Dreyer speaks is unrealistic for a Professor, constantly swearing to his students, flippant, not patient. He couldn't be a Professor with his attitude.
I had to stew on this for a bit before forming a review, and honestly…I’m not sure if I’m happy with this rating.
Nevertheless, here are my thoughts. The characters were okay. I felt no connection to them so I did not care about them whatsoever. Ryn was frustrating. Probably because we’re so different and I personally don’t like when people turn to alcohol consumption to drown their sorrows. If you like that, then that’s great. I just don’t like it. Catherine…I felt like the book would still be the same for the most part without her in it. Brennan was sweet, but his oblivion to everything happening around him was shocking. Drayer had lots of potential. There was some building grounds to develop him into a better character. His character felt quite unrealistic, but then again it’s just a book. The sensory disorder was a great add to the book. I had never read anything with it so it was great seeing some representation of it.

Ryn's pursuit draws her into a web of forbidden romance (professor/student) and dark secrets. She is torn between her growing affections for her shadowy professor who knew her mother and her cinnamon roll peer who idolizes her.

In this dark romance, you meet FMC Camryn and follow her on a thrilling journey managing a love triangle involving her fellow research assistant and her professor. This book had me pulled in so many different ways, unsure who I felt like I should root for.
The plot was very detailed, webs of lies and twists await you from the very beginning! JJ did a great job at conveying Ryn’s Sensory Processing Disorder, at moments I could picture & feel Ryn’s emotions as she panicked.
If anyone is looking for a easy read this summer, pick up Sycophantia on June 7th 🖤
A "Sensory Discovery"...you feel, hear, see, smell, and taste every scene. This steamy, thought-provoking romance novel captivated me from the start and I couldn't put it down after I got halfway through the book.
The premise immediately drew me in. Interesting characters? Check. I have a particular fondness for stories featuring educated protagonists, and Ryn, a psychology grad student, fits the bill perfectly. Her journey through graduate work is detailed in a way that adds depth and intrigue to the narrative. The first-person perspective provides great insight into her thoughts and gradually unravels the mystery of her connection with Dr. Drayer.
Heat? Check. Ryn is twenty-three, brimming with ambition and a penchant for indiscretion, which leads to plenty of fun, playful, and intense scenes. If you enjoy the thrill of possibly getting caught, this story will keep you on the edge of your seat.
