Erin had fallen in lust with Nick Carson the moment she'd set eyes on him. She knew he wanted her, too, even if he did seem to regard her feelings as little more than infatuation.
Nick claimed he liked his women older, more experienced. But was the fifteen-year age gap really the problem? Or was he just too honorable to take her virginity? At least, before marriage....
Kay Thorpe was born on 1935 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK. An avid reader from the time when words on paper began to make sense, she developed a lively imagination of her own, making up stories for the entertainment of her young friends. After leaving school, she tried a variety of jobs, including dental nursing, and a spell in the Women's Royal Airforce from which she emerged knowing a whole lot more about life - if only as an observer.
In 1960, she married with Tony, but didn't begin thinking about trying her hand at writing for a living until she gave up work some four years later to have a baby, John. Having read Mills & Boon novels herself, and done some market research in the local library asking readers what it was they particularly liked about the books, she decided to aim for a particular market, and was fortunate to have her very first, completed manuscript accepted - The Last of the Mallorys, published in 1968. Since then she has written over seventy five books, which doesn't begin to compare with the output of some Mills & Boon authors, but still leaves her wondering where all those words came from.
Sometimes, she finds she has become two different people: the writer at her happiest when involved in the world of books and authors; and the housewife, turning her hands to the everyday needs of husband and son. Once in a while, she finds it difficult to step from one role to the other. She likes cooking, for instance, but she finds that it can be an irritating interruption when she's preoccupied with work on a novel, so the quality of her efforts in the kitchen tend to be a little erratic. She says, "As my husband once remarked, my writing gives life a fascinating element of uncertainly: one day a perfect coq au vin, the next day a couple of burned chops!"
Luckily Kay has daily professional help with her housework, and that leaves her time to indulge in her hobbies. Like many other Mills & Boon authors, she admits to being a voracious consumer of books, a quality she shares with her readers. She likes music and horseback riding, which she does in the countryside near her home. But her favorite hobby is travel - especially to places that will make good settings for her books.
Kay now lives on the outskirts of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, along with husband, Tony, and a huge tabby cat called Mad Max, her one son having flown the coop. Some day she'll think about retiring, but not yet awhile.
It is a pity nobody has written a review here and moreover when the blurb doesn’t give a clear idea of the story one is going to read. So I’ll try to explain a little about the storyline.
When Erin’s stepfather dies, Erin knows that her carefree days are well in the past. She has no studies or career and has been taking care of her younger (14-year-old) half-sister Samantha for years. So she asks her sister’s uncle (Heroe Nick Carson) for help. He assumes his responsability for Samantha, but also wants that Erin goes to live with them both, in a beautiful caribbean island.
Nick is a famous painter, a very rich man. Erin feels much attracted to him, in spite of a 15 year difference. He is 34 and she 19 year-old. As it can be expected living together, one night when in the swimming pool and Samantha already in her room, they get carried away and Erin looses her virginity. But next day, Nick is repentant and tells Erin clearly that they will not have sex anymore and that she must stay there only until they know if there are any consequences. Apart from this, an attractive modell, Dione, comes back to the island and as Nick usually paints his lover’s in the nude, all the evidence tells Erin that Dione is his present love interest.
I won’t tell anything more. It is an entertaining, light read. The four stars is my personal opinion, as I have a weakness for “vintage” Harlequin/M&B authors.
If you like this story, you can also try with another book by the same author, The Alpha Man (Postcards From Europe), at the beginning with many points in common with this one, but also different and even better than this one.
Well for a vintage (ok 2001 but still pretty old) this one really skated on thin ice in Taboo terms. There's a distinct lolita vibe to this pairing of 34 year old rich, successful artist 'uncle' and legal guardian Nick and 19 year old Erin. To be clear Erin is the half sister of his 14 yr old ward Samantha but as she's been Sam's caregiver for years she comes as part of the deal when his much older brother dies and leaves him in charge. He soon has them whipped away to his luxury home on Barbados (be still my beating heart). Erin plunges straight in to the Lolita act - you go girl - and he falls for her like a ripe plum. His resistance is paltry indeed as she floats naked in his swimming pool and slips naked into his bed. She's locked onto him like an exocet missile- 26 year old OW be damned- and, once awakened, hot af for his mature body. Why have a boy when you can have a man. She absolutely throws herself at him and declares to all and sundry that they are getting married thus forcing his hand. This woman knows what she wants (she even buys a sex manual) and who can blame her. Subtle she was not. To me she seemed a mite childish at times (let's face it, at 19 that's not surprising) but he lost a bit of alphaness for me by being just a bit too easy for her to enslave. Still, it makes a refreshing HP change, I guess. There's a cute epilogue.
