A Summoned Husband

Rate this book
ONE GIRLS' NIGHT. WAY TOO MANY DRINKS. ONE DEMON HUSBAND

A lot can happen after three... or four... or maybe five glasses of wine. Eden thought that after a night with the girls and far too much wine, all she would have to worry about was replacing the rug. Boy, was she wrong.

A few whispered words from an old book and she found herself married... to a demon. If only that was the worst of it. Her demon husband has baggage and now bound to the tall, dark, and obnoxiously handsome demon, Eden’s world is about to be thrown upside down.

Asmodeus doesn’t want a wife, least of all a mortal attached to a brood of women who keep trying to banish him back to the depths he’d happily go back to. Some spells can’t be undone. Some fates can’t be avoided and somehow he is going to figure out how to keep his mortal life alive as his sins come calling.

I quite liked the set up of this book with the drunk summoning of a husband and the chaos that ensued. Things got a little hazy on the romance front for me, with Asmodeus going from “I hate her” to “I’d do anything for her” very rapidly. I wanted more of their connection to play out on page so I could invest in their love story. The overarching plot was interesting and dark and all the characters had their pluses and minuses.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: violence, blood, torture, demon summoning, accidental forced marriage, cancer, death of parent (past), estranged mother, discussion of religion, homophobia (not from MCs), nightmares, stalking, near death, possession, death, bad high, intoxication, divorce and toxic in-laws (side character), occult, mind manipulation and memory suppression

Overstayed its Welcome

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)

This book started off strong—sharp, comedic, and full of promise. The dynamic between Eden and Asmodeus was engaging, with Asmodeus in particular stealing the show. His reactions to the absurdity around him, especially the religious humor, had me laughing more than I expected. The book does come with a trigger warning, and for good reason—it isn’t afraid to toe the line of blasphemy. But even as it leaned into that, I found myself entertained by some of the jokes (mostly because of Asmodeus).

As the story progressed, the charm started to wear thin. It simply went on for too long, with several sections dragging and feeling like unnecessary filler. A tighter edit would have done wonders. And then there were the friends. While I appreciated that they were well-developed, they were insufferable. Vi was hands-down the worst, with Imani following close behind. Every time they appeared, I found myself right there with Asmodeus, wishing they would exit the page faster.

In the end, it was an okay read. The humor carried it, but the pacing and certain characters made it a bit of a slog. If it had been shorter, I think I would have enjoyed it more.

Sweet but scary, morbidly hilarious, and chaotic a story that mirrors its author if I’ve ever read one. I swear I died a little every time Asmodeus expresses his feelings for Eden, mentally or verbally. And I just about died laughing every time that man tired to comprehend the Lord book and church. “Maybe I’ll pray back at them,” is going to live rent free in my head forever and has got to be one of the coldest threats you don’t know is a threat ever! Even thought I wanted to smack Imani several times I absolutely loved this friend group and those fierce cult member (lol) grandmothers! The genre jumping S.J. Stewart really doesn’t miss, even when she’s writing outside of her comfort zone. The pace of the story does have some ebbs and flows as this is a paranormal romance so the plot isn’t secondary, it’s at the front. But for the most part it’s a fast paced story with a slow burn romance. There are some scenes that given your level of sensitivity to horror are pretty scary. And some smexy times where the writing is a little flowery where I would have liked it to be a little more gritty. Overall though it’s a great story that’s nonsensical in the way things are when you’re with your friends and everything is funny. Another reader @nailahkingwrites described it as “Living Single meets A Black Lady Sketch Show” and that is the most accurate description imaginable!

*3.5 stars

While an overall enjoyable read, the pacing and OTT side characters detracted from the experience. I enjoyed the dynamic between Eden and Asmodeus, and while I enjoyed the humor throughout, I especially enjoyed the humor within his point of view as an outsider reacting to the absurdities of humans. As someone who consumes a lot of true crime content and has often thought that all religions are pretty much cults, so many of his reactions to religion made me laugh out loud.

From the beginning to mid-point, the group of women that made up the friends and family of the FMC were well developed, amusing, and quite welcome (some more so than others), but as the action was kicking off, they became insufferable. Whether it was meant to be filler or not, it really affected the pacing and detracted from those scenes, distracting us from what was happening in the plot. I think that with some editing, this could've been an aspect of the book I loved, but by the end, I was annoyed by most of those characters and couldn't recall why I had liked them in the first place.

This story is everything I didn't know I needed.

Eden has the best of friends and two kickass grandmothers. Who knew a demon husband was all she needed to complete her life.

I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say that I loved this so much. There was humor, a bit of horror, a lot of sexual tension and so much more.

Thank you SJ Stewart for the eArc in exchange for an honest review ❤️

Eden Leah Perez, please stay away from things you don't know about. However, I enjoyed the ridiculous that happened because you fooled with a book you had no idea about. Sakira, Alicia, Imani, and Olivia tried to do a little crisis control, but it was too late. Asomedus said you were his wife, and that was it. This book was about seeing beyond what you can see, unpacking religious doctrine, friendship, family, grief, and love. It was hilarious with great banter. There were a few things that were left open but I wonder if this will be a series because of the ending.

CN: confronting religious belief (what is good and evil, do we really know the truth), parental death, grief, cancer, kidnapping, torture, manipulation

I don’t even know if I can finish this. It’s had me screaming at my kindle multiple times. The FMC is one of the most insufferable FMCs I’ve had to read in a long time. She continually runs away from the only thing protecting her from danger. Literally nonstop because she is incapable of handling her problems like an adult. She also puts those she claims to love in danger by running to stay with them. It makes no sense and the story drags because so much of it is just her making stupid choices. Her friends are also insufferable. The only redeeming character in this book is the demon and he’s been written as a sidenote to the dumb FMC and her insufferable troupe of idiot friends.

Many thanks to S.J. Stewart for an eARC in exchange for my honest review💚

Whew! This pulled me allllllll the way in from the moment I started reading. I really enjoyed this book! There was tension, stakes, and consequences throughout the plot that were consistent and made sense for the story the book is telling. I also really appreciated the cultural rootedness of the characters- these are Black and Brown people who are written to be secure and centered in their heritage and it’s not diluted or a caricature.

#EdenandAsmodeus4eva I am rooting heavily for these two! Once things started to really click for them, they did not play about each other. Although it happened a little fast, there were enough hints dropped that showed they were meant to be. It was really nice to see how they opened themselves up to love and understanding about each other’s worlds. Also, the spice was spicy when it got down to it (I needed some more though!)🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Our secondary characters - Olivia (Vi), Imani, Alicia, Sarika, Abuela (Catalina), Gran (Lucretia aka Lulu), and Arzen - are everything I love about well-written secondary characters. They are developed enough that I care about them and that they actively contribute to the plot development, but not to the point of overtaking the MCs. We are given enough of their backgrounds to make them part of the story in a meaningful way that shows how significant they are to the arc of the MCs. I would’ve liked to know a bit more about Alicia (although that’s part of her vibe, so it’s just me being nosy af), and Imani and Vi got on my LAST nerve, but I cannot complain about them and am glad Eden and Asmodeus have them in their lives.

In trying not to give too much away, I think my only pushback would be it got a little too drawn out in the build up to the climax. While it was necessary in that it heightened the stakes even more, it was a smidge on the long side and took me out of the action of the main conflict.

I highly recommend this book, & hopefully we get to see these characters again (cause it shole felt like this ain’t the end👀)💚

Now I don’t read a lot of books about demons but I can say this is absolutely my favorite one so far. This one captured me from the beginning and held tight until I got to the end.

I’m not sure if SJ Stewart meant for this book to be so hilarious but I laughed….A LOT. Asmodeus is so disgusted by the mortal realm and I can’t say that I blame him. As a former church kid Eden explaining the Lord book was a joy to read. I wasn’t expecting to reflect on my religious beliefs and how they’ve changed and also wonder if demons are actually bad or just different. The fact that SJ managed to entertain me and get me to think deeper about….idk….if we even know what good/evil are is kinda wild.

Eden was so likable, I feel like I would have her same reactions to my fine demon husband too. Asmodeus, idk man I just really liked him from the beginning. Gran and Abuela….MY GIRLS!! I loved everyone except Imani….she just gets a like from me. I enjoyed getting to really know them. I know this wasn’t about them but getting a chance to really see the relationships between everyone just made me feel more attached to the story.

The romance was slow burn-ish but when they got on the same page you couldn’t do anything to pull them apart. They were not playing no games about each other. Like none.

I will say it did drag at some parts for me but not enough that I became uninterested….I just wanted to get back to the good stuff. The balance between the humor and the romance and the horror (because I definitely jumped a few times) was….SO GOOD. I say all this to say you need to read this book!!!

Thank you SJ Stewart for the ARC. All thoughts and feelings are my own.

Another one with the FMC doing the bad shit yet not really taking any responsibility for what she and her so called friends did. Wholeheartedly blames the demon THEY summoned and proceeds to be mean, rude and just down right fucking awful.

And the overly religious going ons in this book made me wanna throw up. That should be a content/trigger warning.

The only how this chick saw the demon as worthy of her attention and warmth was when he healed her grandmother of her cancer😑 that’s what it took. Gross behaviour.

Did read the entire thing to see if it would improve and nope, for me, it didn’t.

Eden was a hard working happily single woman, who decided to do a summoning with her friends, though they didn’t really believe in demons. She was raised in the church but didn’t know if she believed anymore. Once they summoned Asmodeus all hell broke loose. This story really was a slow burn for me it started to get good towards the end. Also I was kinda upset that Eden was pissed off at the demon when she should’ve been mad at your friends and yourself for summoning him there. Her grandmothers didn’t agree with Asmodeus being a demon but they kinda come around to them being a married. Though it is unheard of for a demon to fall in love, he fell for Eden, And Eden fell for him.

This book was...different. You can essentially say it was a full cast novel. Every character had a personality and you got to know all of them. Like all of them. This book probably took place over like a week or something so every day felt detailed out. Every hour was filled. Eden, our FMC, was intensely relatable. She was hanging out with her girls and ended up married to a demon, after a drunken night of wine and good times. This started a landslide of events that was crazy and unexpected! Her relationship with her friends and her grandparents was something I think we all have had at one point. I really enjoyed that. Even the annoying parts of friendships and elders. I felt more like this was a who dun it than focused mainly on the Romance. Eden does fall for Asmodeus, said demon husband, but it took a backseat to the story. If love to learn more about the witches. They seemed to have an interesting story to tell. I was definitely more invested in figuring out what they had going on then seeing Asmodeus try to see how many times Eden could orgasm before she became incoherent.

The spice was ok. I was not as invested in it as I would have liked to be. I give it a 2 or of 5. There was maybe 2 scenes that focused on them getting it on but I would have been ok with one. Overall I'd give this book a 3! There was some parts that caused things to bog down and slowed the pacing a lot. There was also a lot of characters and to make them worth being there we had to get to know them a little. They are all very involved in the story so there was really no way around it. The story was still enjoyable even though it got bogged down. The banter between everyone is funny and makes the characters relatable. Even the "villains" were relatable! I would recommend this to anyone who needed an intro to PNR. As always check this book out and see how you like it!

I’m at 55% and struggling to make it to the finish line. I think I’m going to table this then maybe return to it in a couple weeks and see if I can finish it because I hate not finishing books. This was recommended to me on TikTok and the premise of it sounded interesting, the cover art drew me in as well.

There seems to be a lot of waste. Wasted page space that is. one thing I’ll say is that sometimes I dislike how there’s nobody that exists other than a couple in a romance book. family? Friends? Community members? All of it nonexistent. I estimate based off what I’ve read so far and what I’ll soon probably read, there’s a solid 6-10 chapters out of the 49 chapters of the book that are just talking about the appearances of her friends, useless scenes and dialogue with her friends and grandmother that do nothing for the plot, and man it is getting on my NERVES. IDGAF ABOUT UR STUPID FRIENDS OR YOUR GRANDMOTHER EXPLAIN TO ME WHY YOU HAVE YET TO KISS AND WE ARE 55% OF THE WAY THROUGH.

Man it’s pissing me off enough to just straight DNF this. What romance novel, not even set up or marketed as a slowburn, and it’s NOT a slow burn, sets up a romance story like this? And yeah technically you could call this a romantasy and fantasy books usually have a lot more drawn out mystery and conflict but girl that’s not what this is, it’s just shit.

As I wrote out my thought’s I’m probably just DNFing this.

4.5 ⭐️ so good!!

My favourite word in this book was “dickmatize” I will be adding that to my vocabulary now.. thank you. 😂

This was a fun read, I had such a good time! I actually felt like I was a part of this crazy friend group just by reading it.

Eden was honestly a great FMC, she was sassy in all the right ways, she was strong, and confident. Eden’s friends were all so different but I absolutely adored every single one of them!

Asmodeus, our MMC had me laughing at how utterly oblivious he was to normal human behaviour and I loved every second of it. Who would think a demon would be so kind too, what he did for Abuela, was selfless.

Abuela, and Gran were the best too, I loved their characters and the way they properly portrayed certain aspects of culture and religion.

All the characters were written really well!

The story and plot were easy to follow and understand, the writing was also really good! I was fully immersed into the story each time I picked up the book. I didn’t want to put it down at times.

Over all this was such a great read, it was the perfect amount of witty, dark, and spicy.

Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read! It was an amazing reading journey, and I truly fell in love with the wild ride that is Eden and Asmodeus.

Eden and her girls were just messing around, enjoying some wine, and ended up summoning a 7-foot, hooved-but-sexy, demon. You know...Just normal weekend activities...

I was sucked in and completely enamored with this book! Two polar opposites—both in life and species—find themselves in a supernatural forced proximity that takes them on a journey of self-discovery and love. The story of Eden and Asmodeus was so fun and light yet complex and intriguing. It was jam-packed with thought-provoking commentary, laugh-worthy moments, thrilling action, and super awesome spice scenes. 10/10 would recommend.

You get diverse characters, intriguing world-building, subtle but amazing plot details, and a hot demon husband! Where can you go wrong? Please just heed triggers and content warnings. Reading is fun, but your mental health matters most!

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this because first person POV isn’t my thing, but I’ve been following this author since their release so I had to give it a go. This was… surprising. The plot moved a lot quicker than I’m used to with her books but didn’t sacrifice the character work I love. When I realized all this takes place over a month or so I was like… what?! I mean… it totally made sense, everything happens very quickly but it was so packed with scary moments, jokes, tension, and other things it was… wild.

I’m still not sure if it measures up to her usual stuff but it was definitely worth the read and I had finished the book before I realized. If she continues writing first person I would be hard pressed to let go of her, because she did suck me in with this one but I hope she goes back to third person even though I know that’s just my personal preference.

Still highly recommend.

What could go wrong when you chant an incantation from a random book while drunk? Quite a lot, it turns out. An accidental demon husband and a witch straight out of a horror movie hunting you.

A Summoned Husband by S. J. Stewart is equal parts horror, comedy, and romance. It begins humorously with Eden and her friends confronting a demon. I enjoyed their friendship and how they stuck together no matter what. Some scenes were genuinely terrifying. I appreciated the character development and the way beliefs were questioned. It was a refreshing take that made me pause and think. This was a delicious dark fantasy that I would recommend to readers. Please check for trigger warnings, as there are quite a few dark themes covered.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an early look at the story!

This Review Contains Some Spoilers

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the chemistry between Eden and Asmodeus are red hot when it really got going. I do love the relationship that Eden had with her friends and grandmothers. I could totally see . The passion with the couple in the second half of the book was off the charts. My only drawback is that it did take a minute to get going with the relationship. It was definitely a slow burn romance with them and I'm not a slow burn person myself. With all that said, I do need a book two for .

It was OK. I want really invested in the characters as much as I thought I'd be. Even though there were some spicy scenes, without the investment, I was just like, meh. There were a lot of moments when it dragged and probably didn't need as much detail.

But I did enjoy the character personalities, specifically the friends.

Well

The last thing Eden expected was to summon a husband at her girls night. Asmodeus definitely never expected to be summoned to his fated mate. Hopefully they can figure themselves out before the rest of the plot comes in.

I enjoyed the general idea of the book. I think the author does a lot of good, but, for me, it was a slow start and a lot of introspection. I still found it to be a good read.

If you like Black Canadians, soulmates, and messing around with things you don’t understand, this is for you.

What a wild ride! S.J. Stewart has an ability that is unparalleled in the way she writes this story. One minute you're laughing, holding your breath, scared, and painting from Asmodeus' heat. Eden and her friends are the ultimate girl group, but a drunken night and a summoned demon leaves Eden house in tatters and her bound to a lust demon...it could be worse, right? There's a lot to learn for all involved. This was an amazing read and I enjoyed every minute of it.

What do you get when you put five best friends, two badass grandmas, and a lust demon together in one room?

Comedic Chaos!

I laughed more than I ever have reading a book about a demon! This book did not let up on the humor, and I couldn’t get enough. Not to mention, Asmodeus being the mushiest gushiest demon ever and I love how much he fell for Eden.

SJ, I’m so happy you write a variety of genres, tropes, and povs! You forever keep me intrigued and entertained.

I need a demon husband asap

S.J. Stewart has quickly become a favorite author of mine! The book is action packed with supernatural battles while also weaving in themes of friendship and family. I enjoyed the chemistry between Asmodeus and Eden. The progression of their love felt very organic considering the circumstances of their marriage. I was enamored with the story until the last page!

Such an enjoyable read! Eden's relationship with Asmodeus was so fun to read, and I loved how even though he's a demon - he's not the kind of demon we'd picture!

One of my favorite parts of this book is the true depth of friendship Eden shares with her girls! I loved how much they all loved and supported each other like true besties!

Thanks S.J. Stewart for an eARC!

This book is my second read by S J Stewart and I really enjoyed this book. I like paranormal books with some darker elements. Eden was funny and I love her and Asmodeus relationship. I really like the way she used Fantasy and horror in this romance books. I will be reading more books by this author. I like the witches and Eden friend group in this book.

Definitely need a three wine glass limit

Eden and her friends are like the perfect girl group dynamic. Hilariously funny, incapable of being serious when they are together , but still ride or die for each other. This is the first book I've read by this author and it definitely won't be my last.

I honestly haven’t read a book from SJ that I haven’t liked yet. So far my knack for choosing what book to read hasn’t stirred me wrong.

This book has filled me with so much laughter, Asmodeus is forever my favorite book husband and can’t no body tell me otherwise. Gran and Abuela are my best friends for life.

If you are a book that has a bit of real life and fantasy I’d recommend you to read this book. You won’t regret it.

It was a bit fast paced for me but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The smut wasn’t overtly done, which is amazing.

I give it five stars cause I can’t do four and a half.
