Pretty short book.

The Hero a Marquis, is concerned about the complaints of his tenants on one of estates that borders that of a certain Duchess. But when he writes to her, she invites him instead. He hears rumors that the Duchess is notorious and engages in scandalous behavior.

The heroine and her twin brother live very quietly in the village vicarage with their uncle. Suddenly she intercepts a letter from the Duchess asking their uncle to immediately vacate the vicarage. She wants to plead their case, but for some reason, her brother’s presence must be kept a secret from the Duchess.

She goes alone to the Estate and encounters the Duchess. Although she still looks beautiful, the heroine feels that she is evil. The Duchess promises to allow the uncle to stay on as vicar if the heroine would stay that night and do everything that is required of her. The naive heroine agrees.

That night she is paired with the Marquis. She doesn’t immediately realize that she has been kept at the estate for an orgy. The Marquis at first thinks she is playing the part of an innocent girl until later when he sees the actual horror in the heroine’s eyes.

He helps her and makes her stay w him in his room, so as not to arouse suspicion, then takes her back to the vicarage very early the next morning. He lets her know where she can get in touch w him if she is in trouble.

The uncle is not at home, so the heroine confides in her brother. They also realize that since some grooms returned her horse the night before, that they saw her brother. The heroine and her brother go riding and as they come back, they see the henchmen of the Duchess who have entered he vicarage and are ransacking their house.

They immediately escape and ride to the Marquis. When there they confess to him that the brother is the rightful Duke. Their father, the previous Duke, married their mother secretly, but died soon after. The villainous Duchess is their older half sister and now suspects the identity of the brother since he looks like her father.

They go to the bank to retrieve the documents that prove the marriage of their parents. The Marquis sends the brother on his yacht to get him away from the clutches of the Duchess. Then he also arranges for the uncle to meet up w him and the heroine. That night, the Duchess and her henchmen try to kidnap the heroine, but the Hero saves the day and the henchman and the Duchess shoot each other! 😁 ah yes so convenient for all!

The Hero takes the heroine and her uncle to his own primary estate, where the uncle will marry them for a HEA. ❤️

* In Dame Cartland’s notes, she points out that some titles, although very few, allow a daughter to inherit the title if there is no son.

Yes, another one of those...A Mr./lord/baron/viscount/earl/marquis/duke/prince/king etc. needs a wife/pretend wife/ pretend mistress etc. to get an inheritance/get rid of an unwanted woman/rise in rank/complete a top secret mission etc., and there’s a convenient miss/vicar’s daughter/lady/princess/a friend’s poor relation etc. who just might help him, but there’s no chance in all that’s holy that he’ll fall in love with her, because he’s a rake and he will never change…But he ends up falling in love with her anyway.
Some of the stories maybe have a little twist on the whole thing with a young woman of the ton needing a chaperone to accompany her abroad, but she asks a poor friend (possibly a vicar’s daughter) to go with her. Then said vicar’s daughter meets the friend’s cousin who happens to be a lord/baron/viscount/earl/marquis/duke and falls helplessly in love with him, but he thinks she’s a worldly and experienced widow and plans on making her his mistress, but she runs, he follows, discovers she’s actually a virginal vicar’s daughter, confesses his love and they get married.
Sometimes there’s also a kidnapping/murder/coup/revolution/woman scorned etc. thrown into the mix to liven things up a bit...But mostly, only the names change.

I liked it, though.

Way too fast for my liking. From perfect strangers to suspicion to compassion to love in 2 days.
