After graduating college, Emerson Clarke believes a summer in Europe with her best friend will be her Pinterest board dream. When her best friend unexpectedly returns home, she insists that Emerson stay and finish their trip. Being alone isn’t new to her; she had to grow up learning to take care of herself, but after one night and a perfect day with a complete stranger, she’s no longer optimistic that she wants to be alone.
Liam Hayes is London’s hottest new hotel entrepreneur. When he learns that the cheeky brunette he met doesn’t believe in love, Liam is determined to change her mind by spending the rest of the summer with her. Together, they form an undeniable friendship and have one unforgettable and adventurous summer.
After years of not seeing each other, Emerson runs into Liam, who is supposed to be in London. Now living in the same city, Emerson tries to ignore him and the connection she feels with him, but a series of events throws them together again and again. Forgetting Liam Hayes is a more significant challenge than she anticipated. And there is no denying that Liam feels the connection, too.
But what if the connection tying them together isn’t what either of them saw coming?

Update: the more I think, the more I maybe gives this 1.5 ⭐️ at best.
I feel like I was supposed to think Liam loved her so much, but he wouldn’t end things with her BEST FRIEND. There was a lot of telling, instead of showing. This guy dates her friend for a lot of book, prioritizes her friend over her, and still has the audacity to think the FMC should go running into his arms when he finally decides to end it. The best part of the book was her not doing that. I wished she waited longer. I needed groveling, but got nothing. If you want to make their relationship toxic (like Magnolia Parks, since I saw that comparison), then actually make it toxic (but at least you can tell BJ loves Magnolia). Her friend was the worst, but Liam wasn’t much better.
~2.5, rounding up because this a debut
This book has some tropes I love (second chance + dual timeline), but the main reason I wanted to read was that I saw the reason the MMC Liam and FMC Emerson were around each other in the present was that he was FWB with her BFF Natalie. This could've been something I loved, but I wasn't a fan of the execution. I expected Liam to end things with Natalie as soon as he realized who she was and he didn't. My biggest problems with it were 1) how long it took for him to end it, 2) he seemed to prioritize her feelings above Emerson's too many times and 3) he showed zero remorse or empathy for the fact that he was hooking up with the love of his life's best friend.
Liam's FWB relationship with Natalie:
Natalie:
Another issue I had was there was some things that were glossed over or told to me, not shown. Examples: And some things didn't make sense or were ignored? Examples:
Despite my rants, I did enjoy this for a debut and would read about the others in this friend group (except Natalie). I was very invested and wasn't bored. The past chapters of them meeting, getting to know each other and falling in love were cute. If you are okay with messy relationships, second chance, OW drama, and dual timelines, maybe this is for you.
OK y’all are absolutely loved this book, and that’s crazy for me be I as I am typically not a fan of dual timelines and second chance romance, but dare I say it, I’ve been converted…And I was completely shocked that this was actually a debut book for this author… congrats you did your big one with this lol.
Oh, I don’t really even know where to start with this review I honestly love every single thing, and had to force myself not to Dm Hannah and discuss it all! Let’s get into.. first thing first and for the sake of honesty, this is a long one, but it really worth.. I promise. A lot happen in the book, we got a romance but also friendships were changed, some for the better and some will never be the same.all the side character were perfect! I was so interested in Georgie and Bex and I loved their outcome. Cal and Chloe I see y’all and Natalie girl I.. **loud exhale**
Liam and Emersons relationship will actually live rent free in my mind for maybe weeks and months to come. It gave me everything I’ve ever wanted out of a romance, we saw the good, the bad the ugly, we saw it all and I loved every min of it, but I will say when Liam said Emme was it for him.. he meant it with everything he had, and that took the patience of a saint because boy she did try hard to prove him wrong. I literally could talk about them for hours!! All the trips, the coin games, the beginnings they endings..the will they, won’t they.. ughhh it perfection!!!
I loved Emerson’s relationship with Cal. It really did give me brother sister vibes, but he was really honest with her when she needed to hear that maybe she was the problem.
However Natalie and Emerson relationship dynamic really did intrigue me… I did know how Emerson felt about their friendship, I wish we knew how Natalie saw it.. but I do have some very real thoughts about Mataloe but they aren’t nice so I won’t say them. But I will say I could see why she would want to take a step back from that friendship because I don’t think I could forgive her and even if I did like our relationship would never be the same, but thankfully she has Chloe!!
I did ask and this book is apart of a series and I will be first in line to read book two!
so grateful to have been given the opportunity to read the ARC of this book (thank you hannah!), and I really enjoyed it. something about liam and emerson’s romance reminds me of the magnolia parks universe which I absolutely ADORED… the back and forth, the self sabotage, and yearn for growth and love. the parallel storylines between the past and present were extremely well done, the travel and summer vibes were amazing and make this a perfect beach read.
the friendship between natalie and emerson was also really unique to find in a romance book, and I was intrigued to find out what the story behind the dynamics between the characters was - I really liked this added dimension and complexity to the plot!
overall, I really liked this book, found myself thinking about the story, characters, and setting when I wasn’t reading, and would recommend to all my book besties looking for a great novel and supporting an amazing new author 🥰
A debut novel by a friend of my cousin’s friend! Liam and Emerson were written with great emotional depth. Some plot points I wish were rounded out more, particularly near the end. But a great debut novel!
What a great summer romance to enjoy right in the heat of July 🔥
With dual perspectives and jumping timelines it takes a beat to understand why Emerson and Liam are reacting the way they are at the beginning but once we start to fall in love the way they have you totally understand!
Emerson and Liam’s story is complicated and a little bit messy but that’s what makes it that much more real. When communication breaks down and you’ve convinced yourself of a narrative inside your own head sometimes you become your own worst enemy.
Thank you Hannah for the ARC and I hope everyone enjoys States and Liam’s love story just as much as I did💞
I've been following the author since she basically started her social media and all of the vibes and aesthetics that she's shared for Summertime Friends have been so spot on. I absolutely LOVED being able to picture the characters from her posts as I was reading! And I loved when the title came into play!
The switch in the past and present timelines really helped keep the story moving forward. I felt like there was multiple times where I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop because of the switch in timelines. With that being said, I do think some things could've been cut and the story would've possibly hit a little harder for me. But I can definitely relate to the years long feelings for someone and the back and forth!!
Liam and his friends Callum and George are my new favorite people. I love their banter with each other. Emerson's friend Natalie on the other hand...I'm still mad at her.
My favorite thing about Liam is that he has a hotel chain and that he created a hotel based off of Emerson and for her. Working and staying in hotels is my favorite thing to do in life so I really enjoyed this part. I loved how Emerson blossomed when she was around Liam and even Callum and George. The coin flip games were my favorite!
Other things I loved were the mentions of Love Island, Theo James, The Royals tv show, and WILLIAM MOSELEY (I looooove William Moseley). I feel like IRL me and the author would be BFFs.
Thank you to the author for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
I was genuinely so excited for this book to come out and it did not disappoint. The dual time line was so easy to follow and the second chance romance.. chefs kiss😚👌🏼
Liam was a heart throb, and he might be my first book crush!! I felt like I could feel his love for Emerson exploding out of his chest.
I highlighted so many lines and love how the author sprinkled in childhood trauma, anxiety, and grief all while writing the most authentic love story.. genius and relatable
WOW!!!!!! i want this kind of love. this was such a well written, quick pacing, always a new turn coming out, unreal tht this is a debut novel… emerson and liam FOREVER
If it weren’t for the flashback chapters, I would have loved this book I think. I really struggle to get behind a book with dual timeline.
A younger version of myself would have hated this book, because of the back and forth and uncertainty of both the characters, but the me that gave Magnolia Parks 5 stars loved this book for all the same reasons.
I received this as an ARC and thought that it was the perfect story to see if I liked time jumps now (spoiler: I don’t lol). I LOVE LOVE LOVE Liam. I am just so down bad for a man who falls first. Emerson was…okay. She made me want to yell at her to stop being a push over and get into extensive therapy 😅 I mean this in the nicest way possible, I wanted to stab Natalie with a red hot poker in her perfect looking face SO MANY TIMES but Chloe? I loved her. She was a girls girl. Overall, the book was good. It wasn’t my usual genre and it had tropes I don’t normally like but I thought this was a great lighthearted read!
Summertime Friends is my all-time favorite second chance romance. The story and characters will stay with me for a long time. Thank you, Hannah, for the ARC. I genuinely love this book and highly recommend it!
I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review! I am going to do my best at keeping the plot out of this review until after release day so I don’t spoil anything!
I really enjoyed this book, even though I am usually not a fan of time-skips or second chances, I decided to give it a try and I am so glad that I did!
I really loved the whole “travelling abroad and meeting a hot man with an accent” vibe because I have such a weak spot for British accents in men so like SIGN ME TF UP. 🤭 I was down bad for Liam from the get-go something about him just pulled me in! His classy, confident, charming self just made me fall head over heels. AND HE COLLECTED AND ANNOTATED BOOKS FOR HER??????? AHHHH 😭🤍
I had a love-hate relationship with Emerson not because of any flaws with her character but with how she allowed herself to be treated! I’m sorry but Nat was NOT a girl’s girl and I couldn’t stand her. 😵💫 I rolled my eyes whenever she was on the page but throughout the story she did grow on me the more we heard about Emerson’s childhood and how she had a support system in Natalie’s family so the jury is still out on how I will feel about Natalie if there are more books to come featuring her in them.
The draaaaaama in this book took me by surprise and I was so here for it! That first big plot twist when we see Liam and his new girl in present day?!!?? WHEEEW CHILE 😶🫠 I was shook!
I was also shocked by the spice, it really exceeded my expectations 🤭 Liam knows how to PLEASE A WOMAN!!!! And he’s a “Good Girl” KING so I was on my knees for him HAHAHAH
I really enjoyed Hannah Hamrick’s writing style, I found her pace enjoyable and pretty easy to follow! If anything I would say it was a bit long towards the middle BUT I feel like we needed it to be to really get the world established as this is the very first story in what I HOPE will become a series. I received an ARC so of course there were a few little things here and there but those will be ironed out by release date so I didn’t take those into account when rating this book.
I always am amazed at indie authors’ passion and drive to put a story out there for everyone to read and I’m so glad I got the chance to be one of the first to read this one! 💗
I want to read this book for the first time again. I love it so freaking much. The thing with flawed and messy characters is that they make the story so much more impactful and authentic. Because, let's be real, no one is perfect. And when we add "right guy, wrong time" to this... mama mia. The writing is amazing, and the analogies used by the author add so much more depth to the book. And excuse me, I also found my favorite nickname ever—States! I loved the character dynamics, the romance, the angst, the healing, and just everything.
This second-chance romance is for all those people who loved A Love Letter to Whiskey. I never thought I would read a book in this category, but this one just knocked it out of the park.
This has a lot of depth. It has childhood trauma, character growth, scars from the past, and just establishing the meaning of love. This book is quotable and amazing. I am IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK.
So if you're looking for a book that will have you pull your hair but also make you smile and shed a few happy tears, this book is the one for you!
It’s true when they say a summer can change your life. This book starts 6 years ago with every girls Pinterest board dream ~ 2 months in Europe with your best friend. Emerson is definitely a romantic at heart who seems to have been unlucky in love. Liam is a British Dreamboat with those beautiful blue-gray eyes. This book jumps between present day and previous summers but it is very clear and easy to follow. I’m not going to lie. The friendships and the relationship crossover seemed messy ! But I loved the drama of it all. The nickname is so cute 🥰 he calls her ‘States’!! The bookish references! He annotates books for her too!! The Taylor Swift references ! I loved every single second of this book !
I had the honor of being an arc reader for this book! (thank you so much Hannah)!
I really enjoyed this book a lot and if it’s not on your tbr list it should be!
Someone else mentioned it but it did remind me a lot of the magnolia parks series and the relationship between the two MCs. The relationship between Emerson and Liam was cute, messy/toxic, HOT!
I loved being able to visualize the invisible string between them trying to pull them back to one another.
The author did a really good job with past and present chapters and making sure everything really flowed together.
I loved seeing all the friendships and connections with friends! I totally had a bad feeling about Nat though definitely didn’t seem like a girls, girl!
ARC review: this is the perfect poolside read 🥹 it’s a second chance romance with past and present POV’s and I loved it 🫶🏼 Liam is a top tier book boyfriend for real 🩷 I also loved the writing, I annotated lots! Really enjoyed it.
STOP ROMANTICIZING TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS!! throughout the book i thought their relationship was toxic plain and simple! had so many DNF moments but i wanted to see atleast one cute interaction where they either are not having an argument or some kind of internal debate. i found all the side characters except the best friend of FMC very nice and suppotive but the actual main characters did not have any depth AT ALL . The FMC was honestly very frustrating ,wdym you will blame the MC for something he didn't even know was happening? and don't even get me started on the MC ,you will get angry at your ex girlfriend for SAYING she liked your friend more while she was angry while you date her best friend??? make it make sense. The turning point for FMC was also very weird for me like the author could not decide the reason FMC will finally have a functioning brain so she threw in the changed mother arc . When i first saw the cover , i was in love and thought it looked very promising but i guess you really shouldn't judge a book by it's cover🤷♀️ so unless you really want to feel frustrated or want to read a book with two equally bad main characters , i would suggest not to waste your time on this

I absolutely adored this book. I am a romance fan for sure, but can definitely be picky when it comes to how they’re written (too corny or a repetitive plot and I’m out). Hannah nailed it, and you would never know this was her first book. The writing to me was along the lines of my other fave romance authors-Abby Jiminez, Ali Hazelwood. The plot was well thought out and I loved the alternating POVs and timelines. The 🔥 scenes were excellent, and the characters themselves were well developed and tbh made me want to be a part of their friend group! As an anxious girly, I also loved the anxiety rep. This was an excellent summer read and I will be recommending it to all!
The perfect summertime read! Hamrick knocked it out of the park with her debut novel. She put me in all of my feels and Liam is up there as one of my favorite book boyfriends! Emerson and Liam’s chemistry was undeniable from the start and made it so easy to fall in love with their story. There were definitely points that I wanted to shake some sense into Emerson, but that’s what makes reading so enjoyable.
I really wanted to love this.. I just couldn’t. The plot and storyline had the potential to be fantastic, however it was just all over the place. I found a few inconsistencies in the story line.
First off, a big congrats to this author for her book debut!
I had such a good time reading this book!
If you love: ✈️Travel ✈️Second chance romance ✈️He falls first ✈️Friends to lovers, etc.
You need to give this book a read.
Summertime Friends follows Emerson and Liam when they meet while she's abroad with her bestie Natalie in Lisbon. Natalie has to leave for a family emergency and Emerson has the summer of her life with Liam. Liam is our London Boy who is beyond smitten with his new "friend" Emerson.
I love the way this book is laid out, we go between past and present starting with where they are today and then moving back to follow how their relationship developed in between.
Because of her childhood Emerson doesn't believe in love and Liam tries his absolute hardest to show how loved and ENOUGH she is. But they are pulled apart for about three years before fate brings them back to togehter in the STATES (iykyk 😉). At a certain point, I was getting a little over Emerson's insecurities, we were basically nearing the end and hearing the same "I'm not enough" - girl please!
I truly do not want to give anything away in this story! But I will tell you I love:
💕 The friends that are in this book except Natalie - she can go scratch (just saying) 💕 That even though there was distance between our main characters, Liam always in way kept Emerson with him & she could never truly forget him 💕 A scene in the book that utterly crushed me was their split 💕 Watching Emerson FINALLY get out of her own way 💕 HEADS OR TAILS!
And I will say I HIGHLY recommend listening to the playlist with this book, it gave all the vibes. I wound up listening to it again when I was done with the book.
I'm advocating for a Callum story - we need a Chloe & Callum...please & thank you!
Summertime Friends was such a fun read! I couldn't put this one down, it kept me on the edge of my seat in the best way. The story itself was so stunning, and the way Hannah wove the dual timeline was flawless. The chapters were also the PERFECT size in my opinion which left me saying "just one more chapter" over and over again.
Liam and Emerson met six summers ago while she was traveling in Europe. The two of them kept in touch and fell for each other of the course of three years before everything fell apart. Jumping to the present, despite living and working in London, Liam pursues a business expansion in Chicago where Emerson is living. The two reconnect and realize that their feelings have far from faded for one another.
Alongside being a great story, each character was so three-dimensional. I loved that no one was perfect and that each character felt truly human. This was not only the case for Liam and Emerson but the entire cast.
This book was cute! I really liked our main characters Emerson and Liam. The vibes are perfect for summer. A trip abroad in Europe and a handsome guy with a sexy accent 😮💨
A few things I loved about this book. Dual POV!! I love seeing the story from both perspectives. I also really loved the relationship between Emerson and Cal. Very much brother sister vibes. I loved Liam and his unwavering commitment. And his group of friends really feels like a close tight knit family.
Overall I really enjoyed the book and storyline. There’s just a few things that came to mind while reading. I really didn’t like our FMCs best friend Nat. I didn’t think she spoke very kindly to her best friend (but we do love Chloe!!) and then secondly I wish we would have gotten deeper into Emerson’s head during a few pivotal moments in her story line. There were a couple of major events that felt too short. Wish we would have gone deeper into her thoughts during those times.
Thank you to the author Hannah for giving me an ARC for my honest review! Overall I gave this 3 stars 🌟. LOVED the story line…just a few execution details I would have liked to see written out differently. Can’t wait to see what else this author brings us!!
3 stars but rounding up for it being a debut novel.
Picked this book up at a local adult book fair and I love supporting local authors, truly honored to have met you, Hannah.
That being said, the FMC annoyed me constantly throughout this book. Feeling she wasn’t worthy of love was such a tired trope and by the end of the book I found myself yelling at her to “get over it already, how else can he show you he cares?”
The dual MC’s self sabotage was equally frustrating, too. I really struggled with these two areas.
What I loved: the friendships in this book were the stuff of dreams. Don’t even know how I missed that George got married until he showed up with Beatrix in Chicago! I loved the dual timeline and I loved that each of the MCs had meat to their character and a well built history that allowed us to really know them. I loved the writing style and felt it was easy to read. However, I never got to that point that makes a book hard to put down- it just fell flat there for me.
Wishing you continued success Hannah and I look forward to your next book and hope to be able to witness you continue to grow in your craft.

If you dream of a European summer vacation, and/or falling in love with a hot, successful British man, this is the book for you! This book is such a sweet example of patience, second chances, and how love can, with a bit of work and vulnerability, heal your heart. Emerson was hurt in her past, and she has allowed that hurt to affect her in ways that are keeping her from being truly happy. It doesn’t bother her, until she meets Liam who is bound to change all of that. Liam knew from the moment he saw Emerson that he was drawn to her. From that point on, he started the journey of trying to keep her, when everything in her body told her to run. We meet some amazing supporting characters in this book. The love these friends have for both Liam and Emerson, and the way they band together to push Liam and Emerson back to each other is so incredibly sweet. I loved getting to live vicariously through Liam’s and Emerson’s summer vacations. This book had be rooting for them the whole time and I hope you enjoy their story as much as I did!
