Rate this book
Dream has been waiting a lifetime for her. But neither of them even knows who she really is.

A walk on the beach turns into a living nightmare when Ophelia is knocked out, only to wake up in a strange, magical world. What's worse, her captor is a tall, dark, and very sexy man who claims he's the god of Human Dreams. And her soulmate.

He might be delusional, but there was something about him that sent shivers down her spine every time they locked eyes.

Dream's been waiting for a long time for her, and now that he's got her, he doesn't plan to let her go. But when the truth of her birth comes to light, things take a complicated twist, and it feels like the heavens themselves are conspiring to separate the fated pair.

Dark forces are determined to cause her trouble, but Ophelia is no quitter. With Dream at her side, and armed with the truth about her heritage, she'll bring balance back to the human realm, or die trying.

Novel approach to old mythos

"Dream" by Anita Primrose is book one in the Oneroi Cycle book. This slow build romance has lots of interesting world building and creative rewriting of ancient myths. The writing style of Primrose is very creative, lots of metaphors and similes, with plenty of homage paid to Ancient Greek and Roman story telling. I really enjoyed the multiple small peaks of plot throughout the book, and the overall growth of Ophelia. This coupled with the long passage of time in an alternative universe felt like a nod to epics like Odysseus (but a much faster and more approachable read.)

There was some other woman drama and miscommunication tropes, but no 3rd act breakup, and Ophelia's story is clearly not over. I can't be the only one rooting for a reverse harem with the Tribunal and maybe Chaos too. There were some hints of "Beauty and the Beast" allusions, which will hopefully be further developed in book 2, "Nightmare".

“Dream,” by Anita Primrose

Dream has been visiting Ophelia’s dreams for a long time, he knows they are meant to be together. Ophelia thinks Dream is just a dream not a real person, until she is knocked out at the beach and wakes up in a magic world of gods and goddesses. When the information of her birth is brought to life, the entire universe seems to be trying to keep them apart.

This was a cute Greek god retelling. It is on the slower side with a lot of time where not action or romance is really happening, mostly internal type thoughts. Even though Ophelia didn’t want the relationship at the beginning it became very insta-love feelings really fast so I think if the book was longer maybe the build up to that could have been more impactful. It is a good light, short romance. 3 out of 5 stars.

Thank you for the ARC, Booksprout.

I can tell this is going to be an amazing series. The set up, the plot, the world building, all of it was top notch. So good. I’m so invested. I love that she’s a mortal who lives in the mortal realm dreaming about 3 gods or supernatural beings, well not really dreaming more like dream walking they are all 100% real just not in he mortal realm. She has a connection/special bond with all of them, but mostly Dream. Who claims he loves her & they are fated to be together. She gets in her own way a lot, but when she finally lets those walls down it’s going to be epic. Dream is a dream literally he’s perfect. & I can’t wait to read more about them! I’m super excited to see where it goes from here!! Is this going to turn into a reverse harem romance?. I hope so!

“I just want to be whole again, but I think I forgot how.”

Despite waiting a lifetime for her, Ophelia still sees dream as nothing but a dream. This is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys reading literature full of references to Greek Mythology!

Roses (Strengths:)
The first thing that I noticed while reading was how enjoyable the writing style was. The word choice all the way to the sentence structure seemed to fit the themes of the book. This therefore leads to readers experiencing a lot more immerse experience.

The next thing I want to discuss is how well crafted the characters were. I truly loved all the clever references to Greek Mythology which the characters hinted towards, alongside their depth. This allows for the reader to experience much more complex and fleshed out characters.

Thorns (Weaknesses:)
Though I’m definitely a sucker for internal dialogue in the romantasy genre, I think that a balance between that and more moment between Dream and Ophelia would’ve been nice. This creates more of a midpoint for other reader’s preferences.

Other thoughts:
This book is my second 5 star read of this year, and I’ll definitely be purchasing the second book in the series before my Prime free trial runs out lol.

It’s a good story that involves mortals and goddesses. It also has a beautiful love story between a mortal and a god that will have you rooting for them. The story will keep you interested and the world building just keeps growing. I do have a complaint and I think it’s just a me problem. But, I want to bring it up. Sawyer Varvel did a good job narrating this story but I feel like a woman narrator would have been best. Other than that it’s a good story and I definitely recommend it.

Such a beautifully written story. It moved a medium pace, building a world and giving character descriptions that made you feel all the feelings. You want the FMC to have the joy she missed out in life in her time. Watching the FMC and MMC connect and come together felt good to experience. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Dream

This book was different. Learning about the gods and goddesses of night and day was interesting. The FMC never felt like she belonged in the mortal world and when her Dream guy brings her to his time she realizes why she never fit in the mortal world. I feel like this story has a lot going on.

It was interesting, with some unique world building, but the FMC lacked agency throughout the story and the pacing dragged.

This was a good mythological romance with Ophelia and Dream who claims to be in love with and her soulmate. A slowburn with potential for more.

1.5⭐

I had high hopes for this book. The prose was rather nice and it seemed like a quick read at 210 pages. It was interesting in the beginning, though I wasn't a HUGE fan of all 3 of the men in her dreams already being in love with Ophelia (and also the logistics of them having been around since she was a literal CHILD).
But once I got the the 50% mark I was wondering when the plot will actually start to happen. Virtually nothing happens until you get 80% into the story besides very minor drama. And then way too much happens all at once in RAPID succession. It made the last parts of the book such a drag to read and towards the end my eyes were glazed over and I was just skimming the pages.
I did appreciate that Dream was good about communication and consent, though I didn't enjoy the smut scenes much (mostly due to words and phrases used that I've come to hate)
A lot of the side characters felt so painfully 2 dimensional. Like caricatures. I did really like the old man in the human village, but besides him none of the characters were endearing to me.
There is so few descriptions of what characters look like. Ophelia especially. I don't even know how old she is meant to be. She could be anywhere from 25-45+. I read the book in one go, within a day and the only description I can recall from the book I finished reading 10 minutes ago is that Nyx has pale skin and wears a cape looking like the night sky.
The main character wasn't my favorite. The plot twist reveal seemed really predictable and a bit cheesy to me. I did like the reveal of who Ophelia's parents are, but wasnt a huge fan of what exactly her powers entailed. It felt Mary sue-ish, like off course she has to be the most special of the specials, who can do something apprently no other god can.
