Vito Donatello called it a match made in heaven. His son, Marco, needed a wife. His goddaughter, Susan, needed a husband. And he needed lots of grandchildren to carry on the Donatello name -- and run Minnesota's largest supermarket chain.
Though Marco loved his father, he wasn't sure about Vito's latest plan. Susan was a blond angel, but Marco had never been attracted to innocent, romantic women. Susan, on the other hand, found Marco hot-tempered and too darned handsome. They had nothing in common except their love for Vito...and a tender yearning that held the promise of a dream come true.
Marco, the elder son of the Donatello family, the supermarket giants, just got the bad news of his father's serious medical condition. As his younger, married brother failed to produce any children, Vito, Marco's father, facing his own mortality, gave Marco, 35, an ultimatum: Marry and produce a grandchild within a year so the Donatello line would continue.
Vito got recently reunited with his long lost god-daughter. He got so impressed by her that he wanted her for his elder son. Susan, 22, just graduated from university, was alone in the world and Vito just hired her at his enterprise.
Marco never met Susan and made it clear to Vito that his plea was not to be granted. Marco had every intention of marrying eventually but not now. When the time come he'd select a younger woman who would be content to stay home and raise their children. Unfortunately this type had never appealed to him as a lover. He preferred independent, sophisticated, professional women. He was currently in a relationship with Hillary, 35, who was everything he wanted in a lover and made no demands.
Not long afterwards Marco did get a chance to meet Susan while visiting his father in the Hospital. The attraction was strong and mutual. Vito kept pushing them together even though Hillary was well in the picture.
As Vito was sick, Susan had to move in with him at his mansion to perform secretarial duties and also be his companion. Marco and Susan started to get to know each other as Marco continued his relationship with Hillary.
The three of them had to travel to another city for the opening of a new store and stayed at the company flat. That first night Marco and Susan started to get intimate on the couch but were interrupted by the doorbell. It was Hillary saying that she had cancelled her appointments so she could accept his invitation to spend the weekend there with him. Susan withdrew feeling hurt and self disgusted. Apparently Marco preferred Hillary but saw nothing wrong with seducing Susan when Hillary was unavailable.
The sexual attraction between Marco and Susan was so strong that Marco started to consider the possibility of marrying Susan. He knew he couldn't have her in a casual relationship, she was a challenge to him now, but once he'd wedded and bedded her and gotten that out of his system, he'd be tied to a woman with whom he had nothing else in common.
Eventually Marco broke up with Hillary and after dating Susan for a few weeks he asked her to marry him. Susan was jubilant, she told him how much she loved him and in her joy she did not notice that he never said he loved her. They were to wed in two weeks as their desire for each other was so great they could not wait any longer.
Marco's brother and sister in law, who were out of the country and knew nothing about the engagement, returned back and broke out their good news: At last they were going to have a baby!
Later, Susan overheard Marco's brother saying that now that a grandchild was on the way, it was no longer necessary for Marco to marry Susan. Marco told him that he'd already asked Susan and his brother concerned and disappointed asked if there is any way he could get out of it. Soon Susan's presence became known. Marco wanted to explain but Susan, devastated, fled.
A week later she'd returned for Vito's sake and Marco told her he loved her. He said, he proposed to her because he couldn't stay away from wanting her and when Susan said that, that was lust he pointed out that he abstained even though that was killing him. He never been in love before and had trouble recognising it. The minute he realised that she'd heard what his brother said, he knew that Vito's plea for a grandchild had nothing to do with his desire to claim her.
Even though l was happy that the two main characters ended up together, l did not like how papa Vito was treating Marco's girlfriend once he decided that he wanted Susan for a daughter in law. I found his behaviour appalling. Marco was no better. He was in an exclusive relationship for a year but he kept saying that there's no commitment and kept groping the heroine any chance he got. His jilting of Hillary was cold hearted as well.
Hero’s terminally ill Italiano Papa pressures him to marry his goddaughter and provide him with an heir before he kicks the bucket. Most of the story is about hero agonizing over breaking up with his girlfriend, who he actually adores, to begrudgingly marry the heroine, who he has no feelings for. Well, except for lusting after her. Every chance he gets, whenever his girlfriend isn’t around, he makes out with the heroine. But I believe his heart was with his girlfriend. The scene when he breaks up with his girlfriend is so painful to read. He is a sweaty, guilty mess and he is SO reluctant but feels like he has to make the sacrifice to appease his father. The OW is dignified and gives him a very classy but sharp set down. I hope down the line, she would become a Harlequin heroine in a book of her own. The author tried hard to paint her as some cold career woman without maternal instincts as if it is a capital crime (well in Halrequin-landia, it kinda is) but she couldn’t gloss over the fact that the hero and heroine, along with her prospective father-in-law, were the dishonorable ones in this scenario.

I think this coulda be better. It got repetitive near the end. And I am glad ALL the men in that family got reamed for being high handed buttfaces! Kinda flat the last half of the book. What happened to the other woman? She seemed pretty keen on messing things up. Read it if you have nothing else lined up.
