Re Reckless Deception - Angela Wells dips her toe into some romantic suspense on the Greek Isles with this one.

The book opens with the h being dumped via a letter from her fiance. The h is currently acting as tour guide in Greece, in a new resort that is trying to establish itself as the latest tourist fashion. So she is sitting in the bar and contemplating where things went wrong.

Her Grandmother was Greek and she ended up raising the h after her mother died and her father took off for a new wife and life in America. As a sort of pilgrimage tribute to her Grandmother and her stories after her sad passing, the h decided to become a travel courier for a year in Greece.

Her fiance, whom she bought a house with and shares a mortgage, was fine with her going and it was all Cheerio, take pics and write. Now this letter comes and the fiance wants to buy out the h's half of the house and move his new love in. The h is not exactly thrilled with this.

She invested all she had in the house, but herself alone will never be able to afford property in England. Plus she doesn't make a ton of money and hasn't been able to establish local contacts yet to do her own tourism bit for a better profit. The company she works for has an exclusive arrangement with the new hotel that is the base for the resort and the locals don't like the place.

Mainly because the hotel has a policy that bans native Greek people from the premises in pretty flagrant discrimination. The h is having a mopey moment and contemplating her bleak future with no home, when a very good looking and powerful Greek man comes into the bar wanting a drink and being pretty aggressive with it.

The bartender is ill with a toothache and the h feels bad for him. He doesn't handle bouncing the Greek man out very well, so the h impulsively tries to soothe the situation over as the Greek man looks ready to pick a fight. She pretends the Greek man is a potential contact to set up boat tours for the tourists and the Greek man is remarkably quick to scoot her off to a cozy table with drinks for two.

They start chatting, as you do when trying to soothe a dangerous man, and the h's sad little story of woe and her life so far comes out. The H is a local and he claims he has contacts that can help the h set up some boat tours. But first the h has to dance with him or he will dance by himself and start some more drama.

The h tries to refuse, she gets little seizures from flashing lights and the dance floor is strobed. The H thinks she is being coy and then she almost collapses when he drags her out to dance, so he carries her off to her staff hotel room.

The H gives her the name of a guy who does boat tours and then he puts the major lurve moves on the h, treating her like she was trying to pick him up. It is the first sign that this H is pretty scary when he wants to be and there is a big roofie kiss, the h is scared and attracted and the H stalks off with a "Let that be a Lesson to You" line.

The next morning, the h gets fired. A waiter saw the H take her to her room and the management wants no staff/local relations or pick ups and now the h's reputation is shattered. The h doesn't know what to do, she is ready to go back home when the H shows up.

He is furious she is leaving when she said she would be around and the h is pretty furious he got her fired with his antics. So the H tells the h that the private island owned by his family has a hotel and she could get job as a liaison there, as they really need someone with dual language to help out the tourists.

The h calls the number the H gives her and woman answers and claims that yes, there is a position and the h can give it a go. So we all get into a boat and go to the H's island. Except there is no hotel. It really is a family island and the H has been away for years from it. His only way back into the fold of his estranged family is if he proves he is ready to settle down and brings home a wife. He got his sister in law to lie to the h so he could basically kidnap her and present her to his family as his future bride.

The h is now forced into pretending she is the H's fiance, he figures she looks innocent enough to please his father and the H can get back into the family business's and mend the family breach. Except things are really strange when the h gets there.

There is an odd tension between the H and his half brother. (The H's mum died when he was three and his father remarried and had another son. ) There is also something going on between the H and his half brother's wife, everyone seems really uneasy around the H too.

We all get a big shock when the H drops the bombshell that he has just been released from three years in prison for beating a man to death. We also find out that the H was engaged to the half-brother's wife. She was years younger than him and they were supposed to be married when the girl turned 18.

The H took himself off while she grew up and in the interim did lots of lady sampling and various bad behavior. Then he killed a man and got sent to prison and the young lady ended up marrying his brother as she was preggers.

The h is falling more and more in love with the H, but she isn't sure that the little girl running around isn't the H's child. Still, the lurve mojo force is strong and the H is very attractive. The h isn't terribly afraid of him, exactly but she can't figure out what is going on. However she succumbs to lure of the H's roofie kisses and his magical beach and agrees to really marry him.

Then she sees the H and his sister in law holding each other close and affirming undying love for each other. The h freaks out and goes to hide in her room. It suddenly becomes all too clear that the little girl is the H's daughter and he got his sister in law preggers, then he went to prison and the brother had to marry her. The H's father is a bit of a tyrant, so the H is doing an end run around the lot of them and using the h as a shield to cover his affair with his sister in law.

The h is hugely hurt. But she just tells the H that she can't marry a man who went to prison for killing someone and the H is angry, he tries a few punishing kisses, but the h is firm and packs to leave. The H tells her he will get her a place in the hotel that fired her, mainly cause his family owns most of it and the h is flabbergasted.

Then the H's half brother rushes in and declares that he will tell the truth. The H tries to stop him, but in a truly dramatic declaration, the half brother announces that HE killed the man and the H covered it up and went to prison in his place.

The H tells the brother to shut up and get out and then the big explanations start. The H was almost ten years older than his now sister in law -- their father's were best buds and got them engaged as kids. But the H was out and off the island a lot, overseeing the family business interests and not too interested in a teen-aged girl who wasn't all that glamorous and really only prepped for being the docile wife and having mini H's.

However his brother is only a little older than the girl and they grew up and spent oodles of time together. While the H was sampling the lady buffet, his half brother and his betrothed fell in love and got preggers. They called the H to come help, cause the girl's father was a bully and the H's little brother was the spoilt baby of the family.

They were all going to talk to the girl's dad, with the H doing the heavy lifting, when some drunken tourists made a fuss. The H punched one of them and then the other, who had grabbed his future sister in law. The H's half brother had followed them and when he saw the guy molesting his girl, he lost it and beat the tar out of him.

But the other guy was really drunk and he hit his head and he died. Since everyone had only seen the H hit the guys, he told his brother to shut up, marry his girl and the H went to prison. The H was worried that his half brother was too young, too pretty and too easy a mark for the men in prison and the H was a really good fighter.

The h is horrified at the whole situation and kinda mad at the brother. But she now believes that the H doesn't love the sister in law and the H is all about proclaiming his love for the h and how he loved her since he first saw her. Since she loves him back, we get a short little lurve mojo moment and unicorns are now free to roam ungroomed forever.

The H and h will now marry and start on their own little mini H's, to keep the family firm going strong and the h doesn't have to worry about English property values anymore for a standard HP HEA outing.

This one was okay, the H was really scary at a few parts, but he never tried to hurt the h, he just went for a lot of roofie kisses. The big dramatic reveal was very dramatic and this is one of the first HP's that actually has the H in prison.

(Tho it will become the HP standard that H's (and a few h's) are really innocent and wrongly convicted - at least until we get to the current HPlandia era, where HP H and h's totally run amok with the law breaking.)

So give this one a shot if you run into it. The romance was standard, but the revelations and the suspense were well done and it is definitely one of the more interesting HP outings.

Limited engagement

The Greeks called it mira--an unavoidable act of destiny. Little else could have prompted Ilona to rescue Alexos Faradaxis from such an embarrassing situation. She should have known that men as powerful and magnetic as Alexos didn't need anybody's help, but by the time she came to that realization, her good deed had cost her her job.

Then Alexos made her an offer she should have refused--pose as his fiancee to help him get back into his family's good graces. He'd pay her handsomely, but would spending too much time alone with Alexos prove too costly?
