“Regret is a luxury granted to those with choices.”
Demon Song is a gothic horror novella inspired by The Phantom of the Opera and Chinese mythology. It follows 16-year-old Maya, who moves with her mother to an old opera house in Beijing, fleeing her mother’s abusive relationship. But Maya soon realizes that something strange is going on there and that several mysterious disappearances have been occurring among the performers of a classic production for years.
While I’m not the most passionate horror reader, I actually enjoyed this novella. I liked the atmosphere of the haunted opera house and how the author weaves the story with important themes such as cycles of abuse, identity, cultural displacement, and a complex mother-daughter relationship. The fact that it’s queer was a total plus.
