In this paranormal mystery, Addie Gardener is stuck in a troubled home, tormented by her missing past and a strange condition. When a letter arrives saying she’s inherited a mansion from a mysterious benefactor that she almost remembers, fragments of her memory painfully unlock. As she reclaims a home that is more than what it seems, she is dragged into a world of magic and folklore. Monsters claiming to be her friends appear and say they want to save her, but are they friend or foe, and were they the ones that broke her mind?
Can I just say that I really love this book? I bought it out of spite (because I saw a post on social media that traditional publishing didn't want a fantasy book by a female author without romance), so I didn't actually expect much... but the character relationship dynamics just sucked me in and I'm begging for this to become a series! There is so much potential to continue the story and right now I feel like I could read at least three more books about Addie and her friends.
What a lovely story! Adventure, murder, politics, and intrigue! I love the platonic friendships, the petty rivalries, and numerous rules of Fae court. Cozy Fae fantasy!
TikTok made me buy it (e-reader version) and I liked it a lot! I gave it 4 stars because I felt the end was a bit rushed - I would have loved it to be a bit longer - and I felt that the Knocker should have gotten more air time. I’m hoping this will be a series, and some of the sub-plots will be explored further.
After seeing a tiktok from her husband, explaining some of the book, I couldn't help but buy the ebook and read it!
I loved the book from beginning to end! It's twists were things I didn't expect and it kept me on my toes throughout the book, never knowing what weird thing could happen next and kept making me guess who was actually worth trusting of the characters.
I also loved that Addie was such a strong character on her own. Once she starts to remember things that actually happened to her when she was younger, she started to grow as a person, becoming stronger by the minute. Even though she wasn't the strongest in supposed "skill", her instincts were incredible, making her tower over the people around her, showing us she was one of the strongest characters.
I loved reading it and honestly, felt a bit sad that the book ended with such an open ending. I wish I could read more about the world of the Betwixt and more off Addie's story. If there ever will be a sequel I will definitely read that as well!

I found the main character's logical nature believable. I think her nature was both natural to her and a product of her abusive household (logic as survival).
I liked how Fae were described in this book. Ex: Instead of a race of Incubi. There was simply one, and humans blamed him for every affair under the sun. Same with the Boogie Man, etc.
It really picked up near the end and it left me wanting a second book/adventure.
My only hang up was how quickly she adapted to her situation. But my assumption was her repressed memories probably made it much easier to accept her changed situation.
Overall, the author's husband on TikTok was right. This book, self-published, was passed over by a trad publisher for NO REASON. It is quite good. An easy read, likeable characters, intriguing, and leaves you with the promise of something more. There's a whole world to explore here.
Well worth a read this book allows you to follow the main character through a very different coming of age with twists and turns and an interesting take on standard fae mythology.
I very much enjoyed the fact that the main character had limits, many of the magics could have easily left her seeming overpowered but it was handled with a graceful story telling that many authors would not have managed.
I bought this book because I saw a post on social media saying that it wasn't picked up as it didn't have romance in it and mainstream publishing houses wanted them to add romance...and I don't know whether that's true or not but as a definite fan of *not* romance it sounded perfect to me. I'm all for people being to read romantasy if that's what they like but I want my fantasy romance light (or even romance non existent). This book did not disappoint.
Addie doesn't shy from help, but she is no damsel in distress. She is no nonsense and takes charge. The story is intriguing and keeps the reader guessing. It does not pull stuff out of left field, and makes sense down the path it goes. Worth the read, especially if a strong protagonist that isn't boy crazy, but practical is what you're looking for.
If you are a fan of the fear and not the Disney kind, this book is for you.
This was a good book! The reason it took me so long to finish is it is hard to find time to read when you have a new baby, work, and school. But I am glad I stuck it out. This was a fun mystery fantasy book and I really enjoyed the strong female lead. I liked that there was no ‘romance’ trope in this book and I could just enjoy the adventure and discovery of this fae world in search of their queen. Very well written.
A paranormal mystery with shades of folklore, a logical heroine, and no romance? Sign me up! That was my reaction when this book showed up on my TiK Tok feed and oh did the algorithm get it right this time. Filled with interesting characters, fun world building, and a compelling mystery, I can’t recommend this book enough.
Absolutely loved this book. It reads like it's for a younger audience, but the main character is relatable. It felt like following teenage me on an adventure. The side characters are fun too.
