Life is flipped upside down for Cheyenne Haney when her fairytale-like relationship of 5 years suddenly ends the day her boyfriend finally proposes to her. She’s heartbroken and storms out of the apartment seeing nothing but red. She’s so distracted that she doesn’t see the car hurling toward her. Right before the worst outcome could happen, she’s pulled away just in time by a mysterious, yet gorgeous person who introduces themself as Harley.
Harley Dunn is every bit of cool, funny, and gorgeous. As a beloved member of the local WNBA team, the Baton Rouge Bayou it’s easy to see how outgoing she is. She loves to joke and have fun, but when it comes to relationships, she’s never had much luck. That is until she crosses paths with Cheyenne again at one of her basketball games.
After some mild flirting on both of their parts, Cheyenne and Harley begin a steamy friends-with-benefits relationship that was meant to be just that. However, when they start catching feelings for one another, things start to get a bit complicated. From annoying exes to traumatic past experiences to unwanted surprises, will their relationship be able to withstand the chaos? Or will their worst fears of heartbreak be reinforced?
This book had so much potential 😭😭 first off I’ll never skip a story about two beautiful successful RICH black women in love but this was just all over the place.
First off there was 0 character/relationship development, they met fell in love instantly and just were love the whole time, nothing challenged their relationship???!?Like of course it was a happy ending but I think what makes a romance book intriguing is the moment where they have conflict and your hoping they fix it cause their meant for each other.
The author started so many side stories about supporting characters and never revisited????? Lots of spice WHICH I LOVE but this was giving wattpad. The pacing was so off, everytime the two mains became vulnerable with each other it would just skip to them having sex and never revisiting talking about their fears fully. The only reason this has two stars is because the sex scenes were AMAZING but I wanted a story too 😭😭😭
This was my first time reading a book I learned about from TikTok, and I’m not mad at it.
Down South Bayou really took me back to some of my favorite Black lesbian websiodes from the early 2010s. It has a similar vibe to Dallas Vuse, as both stories are set in this alternate world where WNBA stars are multi-millionaires with no shortage of groupies. It’s funny because during the past few seasons, the groupie part has actually become true amongst a certain subset of queer fans!! In any case, I enjoyed getting to suspend disbelief with this book like I did with those shows back in 7th-10th grade.
When it comes to Down South Bayou, Aricka Alexander is definitely on Wattpad time, so make sure that’s what you want! The characters are doing the deed in every other chapter, and these scenes are fun if a bit repetitive. The supporting characters are plentiful, but not particularly remarkable—though, to be fair, neither are the main characters. I did appreciate that Alexander didn’t drag out the “I didn’t realize you wanted me too” storyline—more romance authors should take notes.
To close, I would recommend this one for a quick pick-me-up or palate cleanser. I don’t think it will be anyone’s favorite book, but it certainly isn’t a bad way to spend a day or two!
Very good read from the beginning. Ahhhh Harley you remembered, I love it and I melted. Then you went and messed it up a little bit, but then pulled me back in. Add on smacking her ass in public and calling her fine ass. Oh my gawd. Yes, Harley! The other parts around that scene too👌🏽 Cheyenne and Harley the two of them together give a sexy read featuring food, banter, and love languages. This is definitely getting a reread.
My first time reading this author but not the last time. Especially seeing as I know two other characters are next!
Your name is Autumn and her name is Winter. So which one comes first Autumn (Fall) or Winter 👀😂 whew I'm sorry that this popped into my head while reading this story but I know I deserve that laugh after the way this book took me through it! Back to a serious note though, I see how the characters were all set up for the rest of the series, okay Aricka!
giving this a 3.5/4 stars! this book was so cuteeee, omg i was literally blushing the way Harley was speaking to Cheyenne. the spice level was like 4/5. every other chapter they was boom booming so i wish the book had a little bit more plot and more character development. but i will say that this made me wanna be a fly every time they did the nasty fr. hehehehehehehehehehe. i liked it a lot :)
So first of the book i think gives wattpad a lil too much for me and it has so many scenes like every other chapter tbh and nothing wrong with that. My problem is the plot mostly Cheyenne when you first get to the book is heartbroken from her five year relationship that she had with a guy who cheated on her right and so in a couple months she just cool of dat like no more emotions for the relationship you are fully completely ready to start dating again and wont think about your past relationship too much or pertaining to missing or still loving that prior partner???????? Ok fine maybe she is over it and hey people can be weary because of past relationship thats understandable but whats not understandable is when she went over to Harley’s place and saw her ex decided to FIGHT HER. WHAT??? That was not very mature of you how are you better than her ex if your violent and then when y’all go inside cus Harley broke up the fight she got hit and you just chill now after tryna fight… HO IS U COO???? No she is not thats a fact cus why when Harley’s long time friend Corey comes to you and explain that she doesn’t want you to hurt her like her ex cus mind you u just got out a 5 YEAR RELATIONSHIP and that can be worry some to a friend that knows charley can get attached easy and she doesn’t want you to be emotionally or physically abusive to her bestie so she just checking with you or kinda letting you know whats up. YOU SLAP THAT FRIEND FOR TRYNA HELP COME ON MAN NOT MATUREEEEEEE DPMO! Like thats what her ex prolly would have done and. Then you just say and i quote “huff and sit back in my seat. I was so heated right now and wanted nothing but to go home and sleep the rest of the day away. I hated the sinking feeling in my stomach. Like I did something wrong when I didn’t.” BITCH YOU DID DO SOMETHING WRONG YOU BEING DELUSIONAL BABES anyway i am actually not finishing this book so yeah thats all i gotta say Harley deserves better than someone who gets physical when in conflict like your a grown ass women slapping someone at your job….. Okay im done
There is so much great representation in this book! 3.5 rounded up to 4 because I really loved Harley so much ahahah.
Two women loving on each other will never get old! I love to see books with so much fluff and love in them. I really enjoyed the dramatic elements and I really enjoyed how quick the book was from start to finish. It is definitely instalove/insta attraction.
I will say that the pacing of the book was a little off for me and some of the characters could have been flushed out a little better, but over all I really had a good time!
I decided to pick up this book because of TikTok. People recommended it, highlighting two main Black women in a WLW relationship and mentioning the smut.
What I liked:
• The extensive character descriptions were well-done, and the associated playlist added a nice touch. • The author clearly cared about representation, showcasing diversity within the LGBT community, Black culture, and various body types.
• I also really appreciated that the main character is plus-size, and her body was described in a beautiful and appreciative way.
• The main characters were likable, which made it easier to stay engaged with their story.
What I didn’t like:
• The book often felt like a Wattpad story, and I noticed that many other reviewers mentioned this as well. While that isn’t necessarily bad, it did make the writing feel less polished and professional.
• While there were sweet and heartwarming moments that made me smile, some parts felt cringy and made me question the logic behind certain events.
• The relationship moved too quickly. It lacked the depth and growth that makes a connection believable. While the characters shared kind words and actions, I didn’t feel their emotions or thought processes were explored enough for the relationship to feel genuine.
• The drama was entertaining but poorly written at times.
What stood out: The smut scenes were amazing, so if that’s your main interest, this book delivers on that front.
Final Thoughts: It had its fun and sweet moments, but it felt underdeveloped in terms of storytelling and character relationships. The likable main characters and focus on representation were definite highlights.
Rating:
Based on this review, I would give it 3 stars for its focus on representation, body positivity, and the entertaining drama.
I really loved the premise of this book and the representation within the characters, Cheyenne and Harley are both so sweet and I love love love to see a BIPOC sapphic romance. Unfortunately, the story itself fell short for me. There’s no real plot here, it feels more like reading about two people love bombing each other and then they live happily ever after. I think there was a real chance to do more with the Dante or Kelsey storyline to help the drama along. If I had to, I wouldn’t be able to pinpoint any particular climax or instance that I could say "okay THIS is the driving antagonistic force in this story. I wonder how this will play out"
Literarily, I wish the author had more faith in her audience. The beginning breakdown of the characters and the disclaimer about the syntax and word choices in the book aren’t necessary. If you can portray your characters effectively and if they have a clear voice in their narration then you don’t have to explain why it’s written the way it is. The book is very wordy because there’s a lot in it that kind of goes without saying. For example, "average sibling relationship" doesn’t then require a breakdown of what a typical sibling relationship would be. There’s also a lot of extra fluff and filler sentences that aren’t necessary like "we just laid in bed all weekend until Monday" it just kind of drags the story, and breaks a bit of that continuity.
So yeah, a little disappointed but if you’re looking for a quick, spicy, easy/stress free read I would recommend.

One of those romances that will stick with you for a while! I read this in one sitting and just couldn’t put it down! Two amazing women that haven’t had the best luck in love but instachemistry Harley and Cheyenne have from the beginning is ELECTRIC ⚡️ I’m obsessed with Chey and how the girls just loves herself the way that every curvy girl should see her beauty! Harley might be the best human ever and I just want to give this girl the biggest hug ever! This book will have you squealing, biting your nails, hollering and cheesing! The spice in this is 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ spice-sayyyyyy!
This author is making an impression with her consistency and tying in this story into other series. It's like she's creating her own Universe where you get to explore each character's lives and how everyone connects in a subtle way. Keep up the good story telling work.
This was my first sapphic romance and it did not disappoint. I always love stories where the characters know what they want and go right after it, and that’s what Harley and Chey do in this story. Both troubled by past relationships, but open to the love given by each other. This whole story was just so sweet. Now I’m holding all other sapphic romances to this standard.
Lovely, feel good, low angst story by new to me author Arii A! The way these two MCs communicated with each other…chef’s kiss for sure! Their chemistry was off the charts and the steam was very well written and flowed with the story. I liked getting little snippets of the side characters, especially the ones getting their own books in the same time frame. Lots of support and openness and again that amazing communication. Recommend!
This was a lovely black sapphic romance. The main characters fall hard and fast for each other and there is plenty of steam without taking away from the emotion in the story. I received an ARC of this book so it might be because it was not the final version, but there were a few issues with the tense in the writing. Ideally I would've given it 3.5 stars because of that, but I choose to give it the benefit of the doubt. And because really, it is a nice story.
This was exactly what I needed. Witty, funny, cute! Black sapphic, women characters without the struggle love. There was drama but not too much! Homegirl's ex needed more than her butt kicked tho! Ready for book #2 in the Bayou series! Love scenes 👀👌🏾
Yeah...This was just like some of the other black romance I have tried to read/read.
First off, you have just broken up with your man, and you start flirting with someone else not even...2 mins later? Doesn't make sense. If you were hurting like you said you were...you would have just said "thank you" and walked away. Yeah, I know Harley is VERY attractive but still...
When they find each other again, how are they already touching on each other? Unrealistic. Doesn't make sense to me. And why are they already falling in love. I love slow-burns and it's partially my fault for picking this book up knowing it is not. BUT even with a fast-burn, this was TOO fast. If you take away all the other drama from the book, their relationship will be as short as a novelette. That doesn't interest me lol.
I have yet to find a Black Romance that does not depict the characters showing violent tendencies. Can I read a Black romance where the women aren't calling each other names, not even 2 mins into the book? I just feel like some Black authors use name-calling a lot, and I know that's how it is in real life sometimes. Sadly. BUT I came here to escape from reality. PLEASE. Someone recommend me a book that has black FLUFFY romance. I HAVE YET TO DISCOVER ONE AND IT'S TIRING.

It was decent because I couldn’t dnf it. So there was potential. But it was too much smut for me. Every chapter they are fucking and I felt like they lacked conversations and depth. They just thought each other were hot and starting hooking up.
Like I get lesbians uhaul but damn?? You’re introducing her to your parents after not even a week of being “official” talking about having babies 3 months in(okay relatable but I’m not agreeing to have a kid with someone in two years after only knowing them for three months.
The author gives a fair warning about her writing style. TBH it didn’t bother me that much. I felt like the dialogue was good, but the inner thoughts could’ve been reduced.
I also thought the scene with Cory was weird. You’re a physical therapist for a wnba team and you’re going to slap a player? You’d be fired so fast and probably have charges..
I give it 2.5 stars because the storyline (in between all the smut) was decent.

I liked Cheyenne almost immediately but unfortunately the narration extensively bounces between between past and present tense for no reason. (So much that I'm not sure a copyeditor would even fix it without asking an author to go through paragraph by paragraph and try to clean it up on their own first.) I wish I could read past it but I can't. :(
I've read many of the reviews about this book and agree with a lot of readers when they say that this book is remniscent of a classic Wattpad story.
What I liked: The dynamic between Cheyenne and Harley felt very natural and I never once questioned their devotion toward each other.
What I wish could've been better: The book was recommended heavily on BookTok and unfortunately, after reading this, I will be more wary of the books that are recommended on TikTok because while it does have the sapphic filter between two strong Black women that I adore, this book lacked so many strong aspects that are needed in a colorful plot.
Down South Bayou has no center plot whatsoever and also lacks character development entirely. I was skeptical and knew I wouldn't like the book as much as I would've liked to from the very beginning with the note from the author. I wish that she had given her audience more credit and had more faith in her readers instead of already assuming that "this wouldn't be a book for me" because of XYZ. This immediately threw me off because it felt like the author wanted to give the disclaimer of the form and structure of the writing shifting between past and present as an excuse for error. However, that was not the problem I had getting through this story. Everything else was the problem.
Harley and Cheyenne's actions throughout, like the physical altercations and violent communication tactics, made them feel like young teenagers. Not grown women in their late 20s and early 30s who were supposed to have had maneuvered relationships that were years long prior to meeting each other.
Immediately, when Cheyenne is rushing away from Dante and clashes with Harley, it makes no sense for her to be immediately infatuated with this woman after just finding out that her five-year relationship was cheating on her and got someone else pregnant.
The lack of emotional hurdles immediately cancelled out any palpable ideas of emotional triumph. There was zero conflict in the entire book and I could never actually believe that Cheyenne and Harley earned any part of their relationship.
Also, regarding the book's format, almost every single thing was glazed over in exposition, which only added to the fact that so many things that happen are unnecessary (i.e this happened, then this happened, then thirty minutes later this happened, and then we put a movie on but didn't do much watching and were up until 3 am). For example, this line, "I'll admit, this wasn't one of my proudest moments because now I was in the back of a police car on the way to the parish." If Nala's brother was just going to bail Cheyenne out and Harley was going to comfort her afterward and everything would move on and be okay again, then what was even the point of this happening? The same goes for any time they're at a family gathering, just to go back home and have sex. Or Lyric having her breakdown with Cheyenne if we weren't even going to get to see her makeup with Jesse. I can't stress enough that nothing is earned in this book and my heart was never once pulled in one direction or the other.
I'm giving this book one star because while the explicit scenes were well written in physical detail, the inner monologue is repetitive and there is zero tension leading up to these scenes as well as throughout Harley and Cheyenne's entire relationship. Also, I feel like the author tried to use the excuse of both women being "confident in themselves" as a means of borderline PDA (which, again, I could get behind if it was earned).
If this book were proposed as a Wattpad-coded smut story, then I would've known what I was getting into, but it's talked up as so much more than that and I honestly wish I was able to see what others are seeing.
🌟?🌟 I don’t even know what to rate this book to be so completely honest.
For starters, the book read as very Wattpad-esque - and judging by other reviews, I’m not alone in that feeling. Having a story that reads like a Wattpad book isn’t necessarily a bad thing per se, but definitely contributes to a more amateur and less polished feel to the book (which while it may be fine for some readers, I’m not too much of a fan of it). Additionally, (and this may be as a result of the book’s Wattpad nature) everything that happened felt very convenient or unrealistic (though I know the book is set a world different from ours) - 1. Harley being in the area when Cheyenne is breaking things off with her fiancé (I can’t remember if there was an explanation for why Harley was there, but it is said that an ex of hers lives in the area, but if it’s the most recent ex then why would she be over if she’s stated multiple times that she’s good for nothing…), Cheyenne being so apathetic about her previous 5-year relationship (I understand that she sees the failures of the relationship, but she still loved that man at one point in her life so how she’s able to move on so quick genuinely baffles me), one of the physical therapists at Harley’s training centre leaving work at the same time as Cheyenne desperately needing a physical therapist job, basically fairytale fireworks in their relationship, not to mention the sheer speed at which their relationship goes…which one could argue it just reflects lesbian/sapphic relationships in real life, but like…is this a fairytale or what??
Also, why mention that Harley also uses they/them pronouns (as well as she/her pronouns) if the they/them pronouns are NEVER USED. EVER. The inclusivity was nice but I can’t understand why it was even mentioned in the first place if it was never utilised later on.
ALSO, there are sex scenes in basically every chapter…let’s not even get into that. They were good, but a tad repetitive and sometimes felt a little unnecessary - that’s not to say that sex must only be a form of celebration or that people can’t just have sex when they want to…but they basically fucked everywhere…looking like jackrabbits (it honestly felt a bit juvenile).
Overall, the book was alright. I fail to see where the substance in the book lies when you take away the sex and messy drama - the characters don’t make much development, they don’t seem to learn much nor do they have any meaningful conflict that could strengthen their relationship (not saying that conflict is a must-have for a strong relationship). So, although it wasn’t my favourite, again it was just alright.

I was really hoping to like this book. I love books with black women as the main characters. This was gay, took place in Louisiana, had a curvier lead and one was in the WNBA. Recipe for something great if you ask me.
Unfortunately, this book did not meet expectations. First off, did not enjoy the narrator's voice, which isn't the book's fault but nothing I can do about that. Honesty, I hoped the narrator would sound like they were from Louisiana and they did not. Some of the voices for different characters was questionable and didn't give these characters life. The book, itself, didn't give the characters life either, so I guess I shouldn't be too harsh on the voice. Speaking of the book, it flowed weird. Like even ignoring my dislike for the voice, it sounded awkward out loud. Also, the book had no life. I didn't hate anyone except Kelsey, of course, but I didn't love these characters. They were just there.
Since the characters were empty shells, I wasn't too invested in their romance. I hate unnecessary conflict just for the sake of conflict, but maybe this book could've used some. It was kind of boring towards the end. Even when there was conflict, it was lacking in my interest.
If you like spice, then this might be great for you since they getting it in like every other chapter. The scenes are good but it was overkill for me. I like a spicy scene or two but this was too many centered around characters I didn't even care for.
A review said this reads like something on Wattpad and they were right.
Many heartfelt thanks to Aricka Alexander for the ARC! I devoured the book and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I had goosebumps right from the introduction and immediately knew that I would devour and love this book!
Usually, my reviews are super long, but I have barely something to criticize. No unnecessary drama, communication is mostly on point, great character development, and finally a book that gives me hope for the future.
I really like the character description at the beginning. Every author should do that!
I especially appreciate that the characters don't hold back and swear. Who wouldn't swear in such situations?
Maybe the word "ass" comes up a little too often... but I'm not used to it (: And at times, I got confused about whose perspective I was reading from. The frequent switching didn't always make it easy.
The spicy scenes are amazing, detailed, and just right. There weren't too many, but enough, and they didn't disrupt the flow.
"This is an ADULT romance for ADULTS."
Overall 10/10, I will definitely read it again and I'm very glad to have had the opportunity to read it!
Why isn’t it more popular?
And funny enough: Right after finishing this book, there was a basketball game on the TV… now I definitely get how Chey felt!! •~•
I think if I had known going into this book that it was basically all smut with a wattpad plot, I would've liked it. But I read a lot of reviews giving this so much praise for its character development and the way the MCs love story grows in a beautiful and tender way... and it was not that.
I kept reading even though I wasn't in the mood for this type of read because I kept expecting more to happen. For the amazing love story I was promised while reading awesome reviews. But no, the story never truly moves foward. There's no plot. I should've known better when I was 20% in and it seemed like the book ended. They were attracted to each other, became friends, fell in love in the process, were confused about each other's feelings, a tiny conflict and BAM turns out we're actually more than friends. ALL OF THAT in just 20%, what else am I supposed to expect?
Also if you're going to make most of your book smut, I beg you, don't make the scenes repetitive. Cause that's how it was here. Every spicy scene felt the same, not even the dirty talk could keep me interested.
I can understand insta lust in a book, it doesn't bother me. But this was insta love disguised as insta lust. I couldn't believe how enamored they were for each other from the start, therefore their declarations of love didn't feel genuine at times.
,Lastly, what really cemented this as a 2 star rating was one of the things I hate most in books. Let me preface this by saying I'm okay with having an antagonist in a story. But most of the times romance books, instead of giving us a well-written antagonist, they give us caricatured villains. I don't even remember the name of the ex, but oh my fucking god that girl was so infuriating! Not even a real antagonist. Not a single character trait, just an insufferable character who showed up out of the blue to make the MCs lives a living hell. It accomplished that and made my own reading experience a living hell as well.
I absolutely enjoyed this read! This was my first read by this author and I can’t wait to dive into some of the other works. This made me laugh, clutch my pearls during the sex scenes 🤭 and almost made me cry but I contained myself. When Cory🙄 opened her big mouth about the park Harlow took Chey to and how she never takes anyone omg. So bittersweet.🥹 Kelsey was so delusional and toxic! And that holiday dinner oop! I love a little drama and this book gave it okay! 🤣. If you don’t like a lot of spice and drama this book isn’t for you so don’t read it and then give it a low rating! Which the author does mention at the beginning so if you’re a reader you should have read the content warnings 🙂. Anyone thinking they moved fast not in the clerb lol. That U-Haul stereotype about lesbians is about 80% facts! Ha ha! I can not wait to read the story of Jessie and Lyric. Love the side characters and the interconnectedness. It brought a lot to the story. Especially all the tea that was being spilled. 🤣
“So damn nasty,” I whisper in her ear. “So many people can hear all the noises you’re making but you don’t even care.”
“…we were who the other was supposed to find.”
Tropes: celebrity/workplace romance, friends w/ benefits, athlete, queer rep, bi rep, soulmates, HEA, the spice is spicy!!
As a queer basketball player, this book felt like stepping into something warm, real, and deeply seen.
Aricka Alexander captures what it means to carry both love and identity in a world that doesn’t always make space for either. The romance is soft but grounded — not fantasy-perfect, but earned. The chemistry between the leads is electric without ever losing that sense of tenderness that makes sapphic love stories hit different.
What I loved most is how the story let its characters breathe. There’s joy, conflict, community, and all the messy, beautiful layers that come with being Black, queer, and trying to love out loud. It’s not just about romance — it’s about rebuilding trust, finding safety in another person, and learning that vulnerability can be strength.
Reading this as an athlete, I felt that same pulse of intensity — how love can feel like a full-court press one moment and a quiet layup the next. Alexander gets it: being strong doesn’t mean being hard, and being soft doesn’t mean being weak.
📌 If you want a sapphic romance that feels real — full of heat, heart, and healing — this one’s a slam dunk. 🏀💜
I absolutely adored Down South Bayou! I’m so glad Chey and Harley didn’t let their pasts hold them back from building a future together. There’s something powerful about choosing to leap — and this story beautifully captured that kind of brave love.
Chey, my birthday twin (shoutout to us Virgos, LOL), was everything. She embodied the perfect balance — nurturing when needed, protective when it mattered most. So thoughtful, so intentional… classic Virgo energy.
And Harley? Another gentle giant. I loved watching her lean into her softer side without resistance. She let Chey in fully, and it was beautiful to witness. Though she’s naturally the protector, she was also protected — and that dynamic felt so real and affirming.
As for Kelsey… I’m not even mad she got beat up. The knife?! Wild. Just wild.

Fast paced read that I really enjoyed. Insta like/love which I tend to gravitate towards when I need something fun to read. No miscommunication or third act breakup. Conflicts were resolved quickly. I love how the author gave us realistic situations and scenarios between the two mains as they got to know each other such as one taking care of the other while sick, meeting parents, date nights, afternoon picnic dates, simple things like cuddling and watching movies together. We also got some drama with a side character that was dealt with pretty quickly. Entertaining drama with an ex which was my favorite part. Can’t wait to read book two!
I am so glad I was finally able to get some free time in to read this sapphic romance! Harley and Cheyenne are a super cute couple and it was really cool to see a southern perspective (as I really don't know very much about Louisiana myself). But I enjoyed seeing each unique personality shine through each character! I also love that both Harley and Chey went through hell and back with both their past relationships, but never truly closed themselves off to experiencing real love with the right person. That's definitely a wonderfully empowering message for those who have been through really rough, heartbreaking relationships. I loved this read!
