This action-packed story was hard to set down! I love the brother’s best friend trope so it was fun to see how that played out for Julia and Tarren, who was not only her older brother’s best friend since childhood, but also was an officer on the police force where Julia’s brother served as chief.

Julia was in danger pretty much throughout the entire story and Tarren tirelessly worked, along with his police dog, Raz, to protect her. Being constantly together and depending on each other began to wear down the walls a bit that kept things as just friends. However, Tarren had a lot of complicated baggage from his upbringing that made him feel unworthy of Julia.

I liked the way Tarren and Julia communicated with each other and that they were also friends. Seeing them spending time with Julia’s brother as they tried to stay safe and bring the cartel leaders to justice was really nice. They felt like real people who cared about each other. This was a captivating story.

Terri has done it again! I know it might seem like I hand out 5-star reviews all the time, but trust me, it’s hard to earn one, especially with romantic suspense. I need both the romance and the suspense to be spot on, and Terri always nails it. She knows how to pull you in with the romance while keeping you on the edge of your seat, turning pages to find out what happens next.

In this story, Julia steps in to help a teenage girl who’s about to be kidnapped. She saves the girl but ends up injuring the criminal and, unfortunately, sees his face. That’s bad news because he’s part of a cartel, and now Julia’s in serious danger. Thankfully, her brother, the police chief, and his best friend Tarren, a K-9 officer, are there to keep her safe. With Julia’s brother caught up in his duties, Tarren and his K-9 partner, Raz, are ready to do whatever it takes to protect her, even if it puts them in harm’s way.

Julia and Tarren have always been friends, never seeing each other as anything more. But with a dangerous criminal hunting Julia and them stuck in close quarters, their feelings for each other start to surface. Julia’s been hurt before, and she’s scared of a heartbreak from Tarren. Tarren, on the other hand, has his own baggage, feeling like he’s not good enough for someone like Julia. Still, he’s determined to keep her safe, and his heart from falling for her. But the heart wants what it wants, and maybe God can turn this dangerous time in their lives into something more? Now they just have to figure out who’s after Julia, who’s kidnapping all the young women, and why.

Y’all, this story is the perfect mix of action and the sweet, growing romance between Tarren and Julia. While he’s super protective of her, you also see Julia step up and get just as protective over him, and it’s honestly the sweetest thing. You definitely need to read this!

What happens when a witness becomes the target? When one courageous decision pulls you deep into the shadows of danger, can you still stand tall in faith? Trained to Protect delivers just that … and so much more! It’s a powerful reminder of God's protection, the strength of relationships, and the fierce loyalty of a K-9 team on the hunt.

This story wrapped itself around me like the tide pulling a sea turtle—smooth, yet with an undercurrent of danger I couldn’t shake. Julia Hamilton, working at a sea turtle rescue, leads a life filled with compassion, but it’s her brave choice to stop a kidnapping that thrusts her into something far more terrifying. As the cartel closes in, it’s K-9 officer Tarren McGregor—her brother’s best friend—who steps in, ready to protect her, no matter the cost.

The suspense is relentless, yet it’s the faith woven into this story that truly stands out. When it is said, “We can only do our best and pray that God will lead us to the answers,” it hits a note that resonates with us all. In the midst of the chase, when the stakes are at their highest, it’s trust in God that keeps them moving forward—through the danger, through the uncertainty. You feel it in every page, every prayer, and every breath they take.

The romance builds from years of friendship and undeniable chemistry—but it’s the trust, vulnerability, and devotion they share that makes their relationship so moving. Tarren’s internal struggle—his feeling of unworthiness—adds a layer of tension that kept my heart racing, just as much as the action did.

I couldn’t put this book down. The suspense kept me hooked, but it was the Christian themes of faith, grace, and God’s sovereignty that truly captivated my heart. This story beautifully reminded me of God’s tender care, even when we’re navigating the fiercest of storms.

Terri Reed does it again, delivering a story as fierce as a K-9 team on the hunt. If you're craving a suspenseful journey where faith and devotion run as deep as the bonds between friends and protectors, Trained to Protect should be your next read!

This captivating story offers an ideal blend of suspense, romance, and faith. The fast-paced, action-filled plot, with K-9 Officer Tarren McGregor and marine biologist Julia Hamilton facing one danger after another, kept me reading expectantly. Outstanding, relatable characters propel the story forward. The sibling interaction and friends-to-more romantic tension are engaging and entertaining. Ms. Reed masterfully captures and depicts the authentic South Padre Island, Texas, setting adding a layer of authenticity to the fictional narrative. Detailed information about sea turtle conservation, rescue, and rehabilitation adds interest. I appreciate the gentle thread of faith woven into the story adding depth and inspiration. I totally enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It had good, clean Romance and lots of suspense. It had suspense right from the very beginning, where do you hide when the Human Trafficking Cartel is after you? There isn't any place to hide where they won't find you. It's a good thing Julia's brother is a cop and that his best friend is a K9 cop. I love books about the K9 cops since I'm a huge dog lover. You won't be disappointed when you read this book.

Trained to Protect has a great storyline. The main female lead witnesses and stops an abduction from happening and with this - she sees the face of the cartel involved. Now on a run for her life, she is protected by her childhood crush, her brother's best friend - Tarren. The story holds your attention and is a good quick read. If it wasn't too predictable, I would have given it 5 stars - but all in all, still a very good read.

Ah Terri Reed has done it again! Trained to Protect was so good and highly action packed! When Julia witnesses and prevents a kidnapping, she is now being targeted for murder by the cartel. Tarren and Raz, his K-9 partner, must protect Julia even if it costs them their lives. From gunfights to chases to bombs, the action never stopped! What a page turner this was! I loved the characters in this book, with Julia being stubborn and determined, and Tarren being caring, kind, and compassionate. I also loved the character development between the two, and I loved the turtles and the K-9 dog Raz. I have read most of Terri Reed's and this by far one of my favorites!

Protection, danger, humor, and beauty this book has it all. I loved meeting Julia, a very determined young woman who enjoys her work with sea turtles. She's not about to let a drug cartel take over her hometown. Tarren and his canine partner, Raz, have vowed to protect her. Definitely put Trained to Protect at the top of your TBR list.

Trained To Protect is another amazing book by Terri Reed.
Julia grew up following her brother Jeremy and his best friend Tarren around. During that time, she had grown to love him, but since he just regards her as Jeremy 's annoying little sister, she isn't about to let him know her heart.
Now, as a marine biologist caring mainly for sea turtles, she rescues a girl from an attempted kidnapping and sees the kidnapper!!
Tarren, with his K9 Raz, gets there in time to help her and the victim, but Julia isn't out of danger she can identify the kidnapper. And he has connections to a human trafficking ring.
With danger all around, Tarren must protect Julia until the leaders of the ring are all caught. All the while, keeping his feelings about her to himself.
This story was so exciting, a real page turner with an awesome ending.

Terri Reed’s newest romantic suspense delivers an edge-of-your-seat story that kept me glued to the book from the first page!
The plot is intriguing. Julia Hamilton saves a teenage girl from being kidnapped on South Padre Island Beach. But since she saw the face of the abductor, she has now become the deadly target of very dangerous human trafficking cartel, which will stop at nothing to silence her forever. Tarren McGregor, is Julia’s brother best friend, and a K-9 officer in the Island who is totally determined to protect and keep Julia safe at any cost. Their childhood secret crush revives and grows with their forced proximity, which makes things even more complicated as Julia’s brother Jeremy not only is his best friend but also his boss in the police department. With his K-9 partner Raz, will Tanner be able to keep Julia safe, and his heart as well?
This was a great story, not only from the plot point of view, which was a page turner, but especially because of the main characters and the inspirational message behind the intriguing plot. The plot was pretty fast paced with lots of action and innumerable deadly risk moments because of the non-stop cartel’s persecution of Julia. Lots of twists and turns. But I loved the character’s depth. Julia’s selfless care for others and for the vulnerable animals. I liked that she worked at the Turtle Sanctuary -I love sea turtles- and how she was so devoted to this work. She was very courageous, even if she was also scared out of her wits, because she preferred to confront the criminals than just escape and go into a witness protection program. Tanner was a swooning hero. I loved his protectiveness of Julia, his fierce determination of protecting her even at the cost of his own life. His struggle with feeling worthy, because of his childhood and family’s past, was heart-tugging. I loved how Julia helps him see his great worth, not only to her, but especially before God. There are inspirational messages blended in the story, about trusting God’s protection and guidance during the direst of circumstances. I was also inspired by their trusted and natural prayer to Him, here and there, that never felt forced or preachy.
The romance was sweet, with both trying to hide the undeniable chemistry between them, until that resulted impossible. Loved the ending, my heart was racing fast, but it was worth it.
I also loved that the setting was South Padre Island and Corpus Christi, Texas. That’s the place where we vacationed during my whole childhood. My grandparents had an apartment there. There’s a possibility of having a family reunion there this year, so I was anticipating and remembering the town, the beach, the landscape!
I highly recommend this book to Romantic Suspense Lovers! It’s nail biting, but inspiring!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to post a review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Ripped from today’s headlines, Trained to Protect delivers a thrilling, edge of your seat romantic suspense. Terri Reed is quickly becoming a favorite with her thrilling law enforcement K-9 unit stories. Each story is infused with a gripping mystery, sweet romance & a touch of faith.

Marine biologist Julia Hamilton gets entangled in the unimaginable when she prevents a teenage girl from being kidnapped by a deadly cartel. Not only did she save the girl, but she saw the kidnapper’s face. Facing danger at every turn, she must rely on her brother’s best friend, K-9 officer Tarren McGregor to keep her safe.

Tarren McGregor is used to dealing with the cartel, but when his best friend’s little sister becomes their target, the stakes are raised to a whole new level. The close proximity required for keeping her alive brings new feelings to the surface for his friend’s beautiful sister. As he struggles with his own past, he also has to fight to keep his feelings hidden under the surface.

I thoroughly enjoyed this nail-biting suspense! The cartel is absolutely frightening. When Julia witnesses their human trafficking attempt, I knew this story was going to be an intense ride. The intensity ratchets up to a thrilling conclusion as they face both human & terrifying animal threats.

Along with the non-stop action, is a lovely reluctant to fall romance. Julia’s come to South Padre Island to start over & recover from a boyfriend’s betrayal. The last thing she’s looking for is a new relationship. Tarren’s complicated past & his friendship with Julia’s brother made this forbidden relationship all the more explosive. Their chemistry was off the charts. I enjoyed the close proximity setting & seeing them fall in love. I also enjoyed learning more about Julia’s profession & the darling sea turtles she’s trying to rescue. I also loved the faith thread beautifully woven throughout.

I listened to the audiobook version & enjoyed the narrator. She did a great job bringing these characters to life. It was easy to listen to even on 1.75 speed.

Highly recommend! Excited to read more from this author. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author & publisher. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

I enjoyed the storyline of this one! Tarren is a K-9 Police Officer with his trained dog, Raz. They are a terrific team, but the only K-9 team for their small Texas town. Tarren's best friend (Jeremy) is the Police Chief, and his little sister (Julia) is the MFC. She works at a turtle rescue on the island, and unfortunately (or fortunately, if you are the girl), she witnesses a young girl/teenager being attacked, and almost abducted...BUT, she intercedes and the girl is saved. However, she SAW the abductors face. And, they later find out that JULIA is now being hunted down...

This one really goes off the rails as we are witness to the horrible things that can and will be done to those who cross the paths of the kidnappers. And, Julia is really not safe...anywhere.

That being said, I love how the Christian aspect is intermittently place into the story...especially as I am one to offer up prayers for things all the time.

BUT, the repeated angst of Julia and Jeremy started to grate on me. I mean, you ARE adults. Can't we just get our feelings out there in the open??? I don't know. Maybe it's just me...

In any case, this was a solid 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for me, happily rounded up to 4!
I mean, Raz.... You HAVE to just LOVE him... and the brother/sister aspect, and the brother/friend aspect (and no dating your brother's friends...) well, that really resonated with me!

Danger lurks around every corner after Julia Hamilton witnesses and prevents a kidnapping. Now she has a bounty on her head, and this deranged individual will stop at nothing to take her life.

There is an underlying sense of menace and immersive narrative which combine for a suspense-filled, action packed one sitting read.

The characters were fantastic. Julia Hamilton was a rescuer of sea turtles, and trust me when I say she put the lives of God's creation above all else, even at the risk of losing her own life. She is headstrong and stubborn, but her heart is so big. Her brother, Jeremy, is the law and wants to protect her. Lastly, my favorite character was Tarren McGregor along with his K-9, Raz. Tarren not only wants to protect Julia, but he has feelings for her. She is no longer the cute little sister of his best friend, Jeremy. She is a beautiful woman, but he fights his feelings for her because of Jeremy.

The setting was South Padre Island, off the southern coast of Texas. Being on an island means there were only so many places to hide. The description of the island made me long for an island breeze. Terri Reed does a bang up job of making you feel you are living in the book along with her characters, which makes reading even more pleasurable.

This story has the perfect combination of romance, suspense and intrigue and an inspirational message as well.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Terri Reed's books always have great characters, action and suspense, wonderful detail that helps the reader to imagine themselves in the scenes, and inspirational romance. Trained to Protect is no exception. Julia witnesses an attempted abduction and fights off the abductor to save the teenager. She doesn't know yet that the abductor is a cartel member. Even after he goes after her because she can identify him, you get the sense that she would do it again - because it was the right thing to do. Julia's police chief brother Jeremy and his best friend from childhood and fellow officer Tarren vow to protect her. Tarren and his K-9 Raz are challenged with this protection duty as Julia wants to keep living her life. The romance part is sweet as the reader finds that Julia and Tarren had secret crushes on each other from childhood.
I always think when I pick up one of Terri Reed's books is that I'll be able to put it down when it's time to sleep or go to work. I am always wrong because I never want to put them down until they're done because I have to find out what happens next. I received an ARC of Trained to Protect from the author. As soon as it was released, I bought a copy as a gift for a friend because it was so good I had to share. All opinions are my own.

This story had me at sea turtle rescues! I loved that the main character, Julia, worked for a sea turtle rescue on South Padre Island in Texas. It's on my bucket list. I've always wanted to see this in action. Julia witnesses and prevents a kidnapping of a teenage girl on the beach and after that she is relentlessly pursued by a Mexican cartel. I can't even imagine being that brace to first, prevent a kidnapping and second, do all Julia did to stay one step ahead of the cartel! Even though she was terrified, she worked with her brother, the police chief and Terran, the K-9 officer assigned to her to keep her safe. Terran is her brother's best friend and has been part of her family for years. He has baggage due to his mother's issues while he was growing up. Julia didn't know this, however. I really liked how caring he was to Julia but also, how ferocious he was in protecting her against the cartel. He was a great K-9 officer. His K-9, Raz, was such a great dog. I love K-9 stories, and this one had a lot of action and fantastic characters! The author did a superb job creating a realistic scenario.

Marine biologist Julia Hamilton accidently witnesses an attempted kidnapping while studying turtles on San Padre Island, and suddenly she is the target of a cartel, so she turns to her police chief brother and his best friend, K-9 officer, Tarren McGregor, for help.

A riveting adventure with compelling characters and an engaging plot, with a good balance of suspense, romance, depth and faith. I liked how Julia was surrounded by friends and family who were supportive of her, and concerned for her safety. Tarren is a great guy, with a multi-talented dog, Raz. I liked how Julia and Tarren learn to trust and depend on each other, as the stakes rise, into an action packed conclusion.

Great character development and strong themes of faith throughout, I really enjoyed how Julia and Tarren were able to talk about their faith, and encourage each other.

Overall, a fantastic read, well paced, and full of suspense, faith, and relationship building. Amazing characters and a great plot, highly recommend!

Trained to Protect

February 25, 2025

Julia Hamilton finds herself doing her job of walking along the beach studying the turtles and their nests. She walks carefully to avoid stepping on any of the holes dug to lay eggs. She heard a cry from down the beach. There she saw a large fishman attempting to carry a girl into the boat. She ran towards them, screaming for him to let her go. He became angry, threw the young woman down and worked to abuse Julia. His guard shifted, he lost his mask. Julia allerted the sheriffś office on her phone.
Terri Reed's latest novel, Trained to Protect is an exciting new K-9 story that puts readers on the edge from start to finish. Heavy duty suspense yet a terrific love story evolves as Julia fights the drama fr on Texas South Padre Island as a Mexican Cartel attempts to kidnap women for human smuggling.
Trained to Protect will be published on February 25, 2025. I was able to read her latest book via Amanda Geaney, Harlequin Digital Sales, Christian Author Assistant. I appreciate her allowing me to read and review Reed´s latest adventure. Truly Excellent. Do Enjoy!

I was immediately drawn into Trained to Protect by Terri Reed. I enjoyed the action and suspense which kept things lively (and kept me wondering what would happen next). I liked the main characters, Julia and Tarren. Julia and Tarren had known each other since they were kids. The pair were cute together. I enjoyed watching the walls that they had put up slowly come down. It helps that they are together all the time, and the danger plays into it as well. My favorite character was Tarren’s K9 partner, Raz. Raz was a loving and playful dog, but he could track suspects and take down criminals as well (I believe the dog enjoyed taking down the bad guys). The author provided picturesque descriptions of San Padre Island which allowed me to visualize the beautiful island. I like that Julia had a unique occupation. You could tell that she cared for the turtles, and I enjoyed hearing about her job. The author nicely blended romance, action, suspense, mystery, and faith into one enticing story. Trained to Protect is a captivating tale with an attempted kidnapping, flying bullets, a bothered brother, a protective canine, a turtle in trouble, a menacing cartel, and a blooming romance.

From page one, author Terri Reed kept me on tenterhooks with her newest romantic suspense, Trained to Protect.
Julia Hamilton prevents the kidnapping of a teenaged girl, but, woe to her, sees the would-be kidnapper's face...a face that belongs to part of a cartel involved in human trafficking. Julia now has a target on her back, and the cartel won't stop until they get a bullseye.
Enter Officer Tarren McGregor and his K9 partner, Raz. Tarren is best friends with Julia's brother, and will protect her whatever the cost.
But despite the danger facing them, as well as the emotional burdens each of them carry, feelings for each other work to break through. How will the Lord work in Tarren and Julia's hearts?
You know how when you ride a roller coaster, you have those heart pounding thrills mixed with bits of plain, straight track to give you a slight breather? Trained to Protect is just like that. The author ramps us up with thrilling suspense, yet shows a softer emotional connection develop between the main characters throughout. You won't want to put this book down!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Trained to Protect. I really enjoy Terri's books and I'm always glad to get one in the mail. This story is well-written, action-packed and full of intrigue. I know you are going to love it.

Julia Hamilton works at the Turtle Sanctuary. She is out on the beach of the Gulf of Mexico checking for turtle nest when she hears someone calling for help. Someone is trying to kidnap a young girl. Julia manages to help the girl but sees the man's face. She called her brother. He sent her childhood crush to help her.

K-9 Officer Tarren McGregor and his K-9 Raz were the first to arrive when the police chief sent his men to his sisters rescue. Julia and the girl were cold and wet, the girl refused to leave Julia's side. A news crew met them now the man would know who she was and how to find her. She would now be a target. Could he keep her safe?

A terrifying journey as a cartel goes after them. God has a plan for these two, a plan for hope and a future. Good has a plan for you too. A good plan for peace and not for harm. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.

I've needed a break from the cold, wintry weather so this book has been a pleasure in more ways than one. It is set on Texas's South Padre Island and I loved being transported to sandy beaches and gulf breezes! But wait...I was also immediately engaged in a kidnapping attempt, a killer's efforts to silence a witness, and a dangerous mission to stay alive! Did Julia Hamilton prevent more than a random kidnapping? Was there a sinister threat to all young women in the area?

I loved the characters, the setting, and the non-stop action in this pulse-altering adventure from author Terri Reed! Tarren McGregor was determined to protect Julia but when did she become more than his best friend's little sister? They'd both suffered disappointments and neither was expecting more...but sometimes God has other plans!

Suspense, intrigue, and sweet romance are woven with threads of faith into a wonderful tapestry! I recommend Trained to Protect to all who enjoy romantic Christian suspense.
