A New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author, Penelope Sky is known for her dark romance that makes you fall for her characters….no matter how dark they seem. Her books are being translated into several languages around the world, and she’s sold more than a million books worldwide. She lives in a small town in California with her husband, where she spends most of her time writing on the back porch.
Let me just tell you about how I fell down this particular rabbit hole, and how this plot pulled me in so effortlessly that I didn’t even notice how invested I was Until I reached that last page of this installment, and then I was making a mad dash to find the next Final book……. Now don’t get me wrong there were some very tense moments where I almost threw my Kindle across the room once again with my frustration with some of the characters in this book….. So, before you ask yes my lovely Kindle survive this installment Lol
New beginnings were always scary- We’ll see how that works out……
Astrid, wasn’t sure what devastated her more. Bolton’s betrayal or Theo’s departure. How did two men break her heart in such a short amount of time?
I’ve been right there with these two cheering them on and hoping they can get their act together with this fifth book in the series it finally feels like we’re seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Well, I could only hope that it ends well I really empathize with Astrid as she grapples with her need to cling to her stable life with her husband Bolton, while also dealing with the complicated feelings Theo has stirred up in her. At the start of this Installment, we meet a shattered Bolton, who seems to regret his decisions about opening up their marriage. It leaves us questioning whether his facade hides something deeper. Meanwhile, Theo is adrift without Astrid, regretting the choice he made to trade their relationship for answers about his late twin brother's death. Our main characters are faced with some tough decisions and it’s clear their lives have unraveled without each other but fate always seems to step in and pull them back together whenever they try to move on the tension really built in the final chapter leaving us with a major cliffhanger! I can’t wait for the final book in their trilogy and hope to see more of Scarlett and Axel too.
This book dropped onto my Kindle at 1 AM and I stayed up until 5 AM to finish it… Theo and Astrid have my emotions in a chokehold! Just when I think every impediment to their relationship has been removed, Bam! Yet another wrench gets thrown at them, and it’s doing more than keeping me on my toes. I’ve been in the trenches with these two hoping and willing them to get themselves together, and with this fifth installment of this series, we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I feel so deeply for Astrid, as she continues to struggle with her desire to lean on what she’s always known to be true and secure, her relationship with her husband Bolton, and the conflict the depth of her feelings for Theo introduced to her life.
At the beginning of this chapter, we see a broken Bolton, who seemingly regrets his choices and his expressed desire to open up their marriage, and we are left wondering, for quite a while, whether his smoke and mirrors demeanor reflects something else that is lurking under the surface…
Theo is simultaneously lost without Astrid in his life, and deeply regrets the choice he made to exchange his relationship with her for information regarding the death of his late twin brother.
Our main characters have seemingly impossible choices to make, and this was reflected in the way that their lives spiraled without one another. Yet, fate seems to always intervene and bring them back every time they try to move on. Events comes to a head, of course, in the very last chapter, and we are left with a bleeding cliffhanger!
I’m so looking forward to the conclusion of their trilogy, and hoping to see more of Scarlett and Axel as well. Well, done Penelope on another engaging read! You never disappoint! 5⭐️
I didn’t like how he was sleeping around with other women because he was mad at her and how he was still in love with his dead wife. Not only that whenever she reach out for help from him he would turn her down
When I started the Betrayal Series I didn’t think I could possibly love anyone more than Axel. But Theo has won my heart. He’s such a badass but incredibly sweet and sensitive at the same time. I had all the feels with this book. I can’t believe all the drama these two have been through and can’t wait to see how it wraps up in book 6.
Oh Penelope, when you write series like this especially this one the Betrayal, I think nothing can beat it top the previous series. But this series and this book had me on all different types of emotions and totally got me. I totally loved this series and then I think you won’t be able to top this series but I bet you do. I don’t want to delve tooo much into Theo’s story as I could let out spoilers and I feel you need to read yourself and then you’ll love it as much as I did and know what a brilliant story this was. Thank you Penelope for allowing me to read your books but for the escapism from reality.
Each book I read of Penelope’s keeps getting better and better! This book draws you in and you can’t put it down until you’ve finished the whole story. I truly hope Theo and Astrid get back together. Bolton is so conniving and I hope Astrid realizes he’s not the one for her. I can’t wait for the next book to come out to find out which one she’ll decide to stay with.
I think this one of the best Penelope Sky book I've read so far . There's some TW that should be disclose before my review. (I know this is book 5 in a series but we never know)
When I read a mafia romance I expect some misadventures and some action but I also expect to read sex scenes that come out of nowhere and that does not help the plot. There was no smut in this book. The 300 pages of this book were only focused on their grief and pain and sex would only have decrease the impact that it had on my reading. Throughout the book I was tense just like the characters.
What happens to Astrid in this book is frankly horrible and should not happen to anyone. I cannot judge wether or not the representation of DV victims was accurate, not being a victim myself. The only thing I can say is that violence is book is not something that bother me much . I know what I read and I know what I can or cannot read. But what happened to Astrid was not show through action it was shown through herself . She was empty and was sometime resigned to the idea of being stuck in this situation and the rare time when she tried to free herself she failed and her situation got worse. I don't like some of the things she has done in the series but her discovering who her husband is actually and how his world is extremely dangerous for outsiders (even if that common sense) have humble her . Obviously, you don't need to be assaulted to get humble but that's not my point. I just hope the aftermath of it will be discussed and won't be tuck under the rug . I want her to discuss with someone and try to exteriorise all that pain and all that fear.
As for Theo, I was expecting that revelation about his past lover but I thought that it was going to be a bigger chunk of the book not just a few line in a random chapter. Though I have to admit that I liked Theo as a desperate lover. I don't highlight or annotate when I read a book but I've highlight an entire paragraph of him talking about her .
"You deserve a lot better than him, and I'm so fucking disappointed that a woman so fucking perfect would settle for someone so far beneath her. You're so damn mountain and he's a shadow. You're the ocean and he's a stream. You're a goddess and he's a damn peasant. You deserve a man who will bend at the knee and worship you. Who doesn't look at another woman, even when you aren't in the room. Who says good things behind your back and talks shit to your face. That's not him."
This is one of those stories where you have to double check that the author is a woman. The MMC is horrible. The FMC is tragic. And the story is unbelievable and unlikable.
This book had the potential to be deep and emotional and have a great redemption/reconciliation arc. Instead we as readers got unnecessary trauma (off page) and an unbelievable and unwanted reconciliation. I wanted the MCs to not end up together at the end.
Take out the triggering tropes and this story is almost a repeat of the other couple in book 1-3. Down to the “attagirl” compliments, the FMC’s uniform of tight blk dresses with gold accessories to go to dinner, the MMC’s norm to sit in his study with only sweat pants on or wear jeans and boots in formal situations…. oh you can forget the scotch and cigars and both FMCs cook.. or the butlers…or dead parents…and need to purposefully rearrange or damage the FMC’s cervix and uterus and the list goes on and on…
****Spoilers*****
When SA is included in the middle of the story I think the author has to take care of how to present or move forward with the victimized MC after that. To make them go thru that especially if it’s not one time but abuse that spans over time and not have the MC heavily affected is weird. The FMC bounces back from being SA’d, physically, and mentally abused way too quickly. Right after the FMC is rescued from her quasi-prison, the MMC avoids her like the plague, but for some asinine reason the FMC still is like “a lioness in heat” when she manages to get around him. Whatttt?!? After being taken by force?!? You would expect that s3x would be the last thing on her mind. She Beat so bad make up couldn’t cover it?!? But the MMC does try to make sure she is ok, he avoids her cause he can’t stand to see her bruises that remind him of his deficiencies. That was mind blowing to me and I don’t know why the author had the abuse go that far if she intended to make the FMC irrationally horny and mildly affected and make the MMCs a wimp who couldn’t stand the sight of a battered woman. Then the cherry on the sh*t cake was the MMC who was not SA’d or abused was more affected and had to be coddled by the FMC. She had to give him time to process her abuse and she had to reassure him that it wasn’t his fault. And then after all that he still treated her crappy. I’m amazed at the direction of the story… I don’t know if I should finish this series
When this book was named “It Pains Me” it surely did while I was reading it 🥲
This book was like nothing I ever read from Penelope, and I devour it in HOURS where I went from all kind of emotions but the winner was sadness 😭😭😭 my poor Astrid.
In previous book Astrid left his husband (Bolton) because she didn’t want to be with him anymore after he asked for an “open marriage” and also because she wanted to be with Theo and have a relationship with him, but Theo reject her after being threatened by Bolton and this is where It Pains Me begins.
At this point I couldn’t believe how Theo agreed to that, I felt like he was weak or something and this is bad because he’s THE skull king and you accept the terms and conditions Bolton give you? That’s not… however, Theo return to Astrid and ask for another chance where Astrid obviously reject him because HOW WOULD YOU EXPECT HER TO REACT??? you literally told her “I’m done with you. I’m done with us. Is that clear?” You broke her heart and you’re angry because she didn’t accept you back? 🖕🏼 I wanted Theo to be the kind of man where he does anything to have the forgiveness of his woman and get her back but he gave up so easy and I get it, that’s the difference with Theo where he’s so cold and enigmatic but for that, Axel keeps being my favorite man 👏🏼👏🏼
Bolton was a rat that made a plan to have Astrid back to him (which he succeeded) to only ruin his “second chance” by lying to Astrid and -here’s the worst part- to abuse physically, mentally and sexually of Astrid 😭. Astrid has been trough for so many things on his life and she didn’t deserve anything, I was literally suffering while reading all that and at one point she says: “What the fuck did I do to deserve this?” And it felt it in my heart, I felt her sadness 😭😭😭 and while she was going through all that Theo was whoering around??? Hell no 🙅🏻♀️.
I’m obviously waiting next book and hope Theo redeems himself WITH ME (lol) and give a little bit of romanticism or obsession with your woman because even after we finally know why for him a relationship and commitment to a future is a completely NO I still don’t empathize with him and feel he’s a coward and Astrid deserves more. I said what I said 🥲.
Wow what an emotional roller coaster this one was. When I read the previous book, I kind of felt bad for Bolton. He just seemed like a dude that made the wrong decision and he was sincerely sorry for what he had done. If anything, I kind of liked him…until I read this book. Now, I wish nothing but the absolute worse for this man and I hope Theo rips this dude a new one.
I definitely felt for Astrid a lot in this book because she was stuck between making two very difficult decisions and she made the decision she thought was the best for her, but of course, that didn’t turn out the way she had hoped. Although, I will say, at times I really thought she did a disservice to Theo by underestimating just how much he had done for her and also felt for her. It almost felt like she was trying to convince herself that Bolton was the knight in the shining armor and that really frustrated me because it was the furthest thing from the truth. However, that did not overshadow any of the awful crap Bolton did. That man is psychotic and needs help..desperately. I saw this shift in character for Bolton that took me by surprise because I never saw THAT side of him before so his change in character definitely shocked me a little.
I loved Theo from the very moment he was introduced and that love has stayed strong. To see him try so hard to get through to Astrid and failing multiple time was heartbreaking to see. What was more heartbreaking was to watch him realize that no matter what he did, Astrid had made up her mind and there was nothing more he could do but to walk away and leave her in peace. The relationship between Theo and Astrid is so complicated and at times I felt myself getting frustrated with both characters..but I also realized they both had their reasons to act the way they acted.
I loved this read, couldn’t put it down. I just had to know where Theo and Astrid stood at the end! I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I want to know if their love for each other makes it through or they choose to walk away.
Book 2 of Theo did not disappoint! The push and pull between Theo Astrid and Bolton is jaw dropping and making me so anxious for the final book! I love how this story is different with Bolton turning into someone, we don’t like! Bolton messed up big time and is trying to make it right with Astrid until he is caught in his lies! Now, Bolton will do whatever it takes to keep Astrid even if it’s against his will. Theo rushing in to save the day when he finally learns the truth and marking his territory is incredibly swoon worthy…but what does that really mean for Theo and Astrid?! I love how we are left waiting for what’s to happen next and see where Bolton ends up and what is to come of Theo and Astrid. I totally can relate to Astrid wanting to see the good in Bolton…but he is on his way OUT!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Okay wow!! I thought the hot scenes in these books is what draws me in every time, but man, I was so wrong! It's simply's Penelope's storytelling (and her men)! Even though this book doesn't have what we're expecting, it still leaves us very satisfied.
We were left with Astrid being heartbroken by both men she chose to love. One of them being her Husband, and the other, being Theo. Now we see her life with one of them. Honestly, at first I found myself surprisingly rooting for Bolton. I thought he was on a path to redeem himself, and everyone deserves a second chance. But that was until we see the real, maniacal side of him!! Oh, the character arc was amazing! The story developed enough for all of us to see the many layers of every character, including Scarlett and Axel. We also see a very strong side of Astrid and a vulnerable one of Theo. I had tears in my eyes when I saw how vulnerable he could be.
However, there were a few things that could have gone better:
I thought there was a little too much pushing and pulling between Theo and Astrid. Either of them trying to reach out to one another only to be rejected. That made it feel a bit circular. I also wanted to see a few more action scenes from Astrid (Like Pearl or Vanessa or even Raven had in their storylines), maybe to help her character more. I love her character, and maybe that's why I wanted to see more layers added! And lastly, I think I simply wanted more of Theo and Astrid, instead of Astrid and Bolton. But I guess that is why we have book 3. I genuinely cannot wait for the conclusion of their story! I am waiting at the edge of my seat to read it!
Overall, this book is worth all the hype and I can't wait for everyone to get their hands on it!
You can’t half point reviews but sadly this is a 3.5 but I gave it a 4 in hope that this book is a rickety rope bridge between two much better books.
Whilst this continues the story and builds the tension of a very dire situation, it lacks the passion of the other books leading to this one. I’m so used to these books being full of hot and steamy scenes, but this one doesn’t have that.
Also… even though Bolton (boo hiss) is her husband, this whole book feels like she is cheating on Theo. And that sits really heavily in my heart.
We are left in a very precarious position where we’re not entirely sure if we’ll get the happy ending we want… but I can’t deny that I’m desperate to find out where this goes. I love these characters and want them to be what they deserve to be to each other… but will Theo let down his guard and accept happiness over duty.
Come on Penelope… release the next one so we can put our own hearts at rest.
In the book It Pains Me, we learn more about Theo and dig deeper into the man he has become. We discover his tragic past and why he is the way he is with everyone. We also see why he’s so closed off when it comes to Astrid even though he cares about her.
We see Astrid make a choice that leads to all the events that happen in this book. These two would rather suffer in silence, than to lean on others or each other in order to heal. No matter what outside forces are trying to tear them apart. I hope they find a way to be together without any doubt and guilt.
I was a wreck with this book. Although I was emotional, I couldn’t put the book down. Penelope Sky has this way of pulling you into the book where you cannot stop until you’ve turned the last page. I cannot wait for the last story which I’m sure will be nothing less than amazing.
All aboard the emotional rollercoaster ! Ahhhhh I was seriously on the edge of my seat the entire time! I couldn’t put this book down and finished it in one day because it was SO good! Penelope couldn’t write a bad book if she tried!
Possible spoilers: I previously disliked Bolton but at the beginning, he had me [slightly] fooled thinking he had a heart. Seeing how quick he could manipulate Astrid and everyone else around them was insane. I hated every thing he put Astrid through but Theo will get that revenge.
There was SO much character development for both Astrid and Theo! My heart was racing throughout majority of this book. I cannot wait to see how they continue to grow and where their story takes them.
And I can’t wait to see what Theo does to Bolton! 🫣
It Pains Me is the 2nd installment to Theo’s story and a 5 start for me. Penelope Sky has written a very deep, emotional book that will touch the souls of many.
The main characters are Theo, Astrid, and Bolton. The trio indulges in a cat and mouse game of lies, miscommunication, and physical abuse.
Our backup players are Axel and Scarlett. Our two lovebirds are now with kids. They support their brother, Theo, and his woman, Astrid.
Penelope wrote a book I wish I had in my younger years when several dear friends were subjected to the abuse she describes in the story. The sad truth is that it continues today. The strength Astrid shows is what I wish they had. I wish they had Theo to protect them.
I loved Theo from the very moment he was introduced and that love has stayed strong throughout this book. He tried hard to get through to Astrid and it was heartbreaking to have her choose Bolton every time. The relationship between Theo and Astrid is so complicated and at times I felt myself getting frustrated with both characters..but I also realized they both had their reasons to act the way they did. I was suspicious of Bolton in the previous book but now he has proven himself as a certified psycho. I loved this read, couldn’t put it down. I just had to know where Theo and Astrid stood at the end! I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I want to know if their love for each other makes it through or they choose to walk away.
Book two of this trilogy is aptly named. This book is riddled with physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, deception, lies and betrayal and naivety to only name a few. Ms. Sky does it again taking the reader on a journey that emits so many emotions in her story of its's characters in a few hundred pages. She is able to immerse the reader in the story as the plot unfolds giving them all the "feels" associated with the story and its characters.
Theo is my favorite character in his series. He is by far one of the most unapologetic main male characters that has a polished rough exterior with a sweet caring interior. He is the perfect character in this book. The storyline reveals Shayla, his wife that past away from cancer ten years earlier. It gives the reader a taste of how much that short period of time before her death damaged Theo. There is so much angst and back and forth generated in this book between he and Astrid. I loved Axel's character in his trilogy and have fallen in love with Theo's in this trilogy. These guys are so unique in their personalities and their actions that make them stand out from their counterparts in other publications in this genre. The banter between Axel and Theo adds so much to this book. Theo provided support for Axel in his series and Axel is returning the favor. I love the saying that these two "are brothers not by blood but by choice". There is so much brotherly love between these two men that they not only call each other out, they apologize when they step over a line.
Astrid's character faltered in book 2 with her inability to read her own husband. It's like she had accepted that Bolton was the head of a group of assassins called the Brotherhood and a trained assassin that will kill a man, woman or child for a price. She went back to him blindly when he hires men to break into her apartment w/o any consideration for the who and the why. She takes one step forward and three steps backward. Book 2 is dance for Astrid that finally leads to the "reality" of the monster she married. Her desire to be protected goes right out the window when Bolton makes her his hostage and begins to physically, sexually and mentally abuse her. Her disdain for Theo because he didn't immediately answer her text is overly played by Astrid which results in her not only involved in Bolton's train wreck, but her lack of ability to get herself free of him. She has no friends at 29 accept Axel and Scarlett. Her lifestyle has been scripted by a man that doesn't love her but won't let her go. She is the author of her own downfall in book 2. I only hope she gets it together in book three before it is too late.
Theo and Astrid, with their stream of unfortunate strings of misfortunes. Will these two ever get it together and meet up at the exact same spot?! It all started with Astrid psycho husband Bolton, suggesting that they open up their marriage so he can cheat on her with her consent. Instead of saying no, she went along with it, knowing that's not what she wants at all. In comes Theo, with his fine as self one night when she had a flat tire. It was an instant connection with lots of chemistry, at first sight. An affair started between the two, with lots of sparks until Bolton finds out. He then gave Theo a proposition he couldn't refuse. He'll tell him who killed Theo's twin brother Killian, but he'll have to break it off with Astrid and break her heart. Theo chose to find out the name of the person who killed his brother and break it off with Astrid. That's when all the misoportunities began with them both. Bolton, staged a break in, and Astrid, phone Theo, for help. He didn't take the call. So she called Bolton, instead, not knowing it's all his fault. He comes running to save the day.Later on Theo, he finds out what happened to her, and he feels guilty. Begs for forgiveness and another chance, Astrid turns him down. She moves back home with Bolton, only to find out who he truly is a psycho. She's been held against her will and treated in the worst way possible. She finds a way to get in touch with Theo to get his help. He's still heartbroken from her choosing her husband over him. He walks away from her without getting the real reason she contacted him in the first place. Bolton becomes even more unhinged with his violent behavior, so badly that Scarlet, Theo best friend Axel wife, gets involved. All he'll break out. Because now Theo gets the whole truth. And now he's seeing red. It doesn't look well for Bolton at all. Finally, Astrid and Theo are together, but are they really?! Can't wait to find out. Thank you, Penelope Sky, for another chance to read an ARC and to post my very long review. This book is that good. My review doesn't give it any justice. This is an absolute must-read.
Cheese and mother flippin’ crackers…I can’t even with this woman anymore. I think she writes these books as a form of torture for all of us. I don’t have the emotional energy for this anymore, I’m gonna die. Done did us dirty leaving us with the ending of this book. I said what I said. I’m leaving now bye.
I feel like I have to emotionally invest all of my time when I read these books to get them done so fast because I can’t put them down and then when I notice I’m getting to the end I get kind of scared because I know it’s not gonna be finished up so that means I’m gonna have to read another book and it’s gonna make me so excited and scared and sad and be extra super spicy, all at the same time Because there’s only one left.
I brought all of these books and aside from the buttons and lace series. I can’t decide which books are my favorite because to me they just get better and better with everything, with the story, with the characters, with the emotion and what it evokes in the reader and in the characters.
Not that the other characters who we also see from the first part of this series aren’t great because they are but Theo is something all in itself. Or himself. I personally enjoy this character in this story.
But then again I enjoy all of Penelope‘s characters and stories so I could be a tad biased since I’ve read every single one of her books and I can’t seem to stop and then she has to go and write this book and I just don’t think it’s fair. I think it’s cruel and unusual punishment to keep us all waiting like this. Why does she have to hurt us like this? At least we’re all in this pain together.
I know this is supposed to be a review, but it sounds like a rang but what I’m really trying to say is for the people who have read the first one of these characters EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS ONE TOO. Don’t make me repeat myself!
Literally stayed up all night reading this 🥱 Even though I didn't love every decision of the both MCs i LOVED every second of this book! Scarlett is the MVP!
This month will be dreadful waiting for the third book of Theo and Astrid's story. I need them to get on the same page though and SPEAK UP.
📖“I haven’t been with anyone since I changed your tire in the rain. Since the moment my mouth claimed your lips in my name. I took you to dinner because I enjoyed listening to every word that came out of your mouth. I haven’t felt this way in a long time, and I’m sorry I was too much of a coward to say it.” His eyes flicked back and forth between mine. “But I’m saying it now. I can’t promise you this will end the way you want. As husband and wife with a couple kids climbing all over the furniture. But I can promise you that I’ll try. Try to take it slow. One day at a time. Start at a crawl and work our way to a walk. And then maybe, one day, we’ll run.”
📖His eyes flicked back and forth between mine. “If I hurt you more than he ever has, then that means I mean more to you. It means that I’m the man you want, but you’re scared. So, you’re settling. And everything you said before is bullshit. You don’t need him to care for you or protect you. You’re perfectly capable of doing those things on your own. What the fuck happened to make you change your entire identity like this? Because the woman I met had a spine stronger than the knuckles in my fist. She held her head higher than a queen. She was a bad bitch who didn’t take shit—not even from me. ” He cocked his head slightly.
Well this got me out of my reading slump real quick. Holy balls. I fell in love with these characters all over again. Also, Scarlett is the friend we all need. She is a real one. Looking out for women everywhere. Absolute badass. I loved her in the other books but this one made me love her even more.
This book was so good. The range of emotions I felt while reading this was wild! Angry one minute, wanting to sob the next. Some of these scenes had me hurting and the internal dialogue 😭😭
"I’d never expected to see him again, assumed he would turn into a ghost that would haunt my hallways and my silence, and when he couldn’t haunt me anymore, he would turn into a phantom and invade my nightmares."
Penelope's writing gets me every time. It is top tier👌
"An apology has the power to earn forgiveness, but it doesn’t have the power to change the past.”
I think EVERYONE can relate to that quote. I've felt it a million times. I felt the pain Theo and Astrid went through. I felt the confusion and the regret that seeped out of the both of them. It was devastating but I ate up every second of it.
This book was pure plot and I am grateful for it. I love smut but I didn't need it to keep me entertained and engrossed in this story. The plot was more than enough and so refreshing! I read this in 2 sittings. I would have finished it in 1 but I had to do some work while at work😂
I adore the world Penelope created and I will forever be grateful that she has shared it with us. These characters are unforgettable. I cannot wait for the next one!
Pains of the past and present shadow both Astrid and Theo
It Pains Me seems like the perfect name for this story! The pain was evident on most pages; whether it was the pain of losing someone you barely knew but were starting to care for, the pain of a marriage gone wrong, or physical and mental pain, all the many versions of pain were recorded.
However, do not make the pain a decision not to read, as this story will grip you from page one. You will rage, but there will be some nuggets that show that love can still cause one to make some significant decisions.
Theo's relentless pursuit of revenge against his deceased brother leads to a series of regrettable decisions. But he is still the Skull King. When the Skull King makes a decision, he goes with it.
Bolton, Astrid's husband, decides he regrets the open marriage and wants her to return to their marriage as though nothing has happened. Does he have an ulterior motive, or is he even honest? Is she capable of that after experiencing such a connection with Theo?
One burning question that lingers throughout the story is whether Theo and Astrid will ever be able to establish a genuine relationship. I can't wait to find out the conclusion of this trilogy.
As usual, the appearance of Axel and Scarlett adds to the story.
Devastating story of love, rival gangs and bad choices.
Mood Reader: This is a very intense story, the second of three books about this couple, Theo and Astrid. They have a very deep but complicated love- he's a hardened criminal, and she has a ruthless, manipulative, then abusive husband who would rather see her dead than free. The two men are also bitter rivals, her husband having killed Theo's brother many years ago. There is some back and forth between Theo and Astrid, each reaching out to the other when the other is too angry or hurt to take the chance. The horrible result is Astrid staying with her husband, only to find out what exactly makes him a great hitman- he is a cruel sociopath capable of horrific violence. She valiantly tries to escape him several times, even shoots him once, but he overcomes her and abuses her severely. When Theo finds out… war breaks out. I can barely wait for a book 3 in July!
Tropes:
* MF Contemporary * Italy * alpha mob boss with a soft spot for her * art gallery/ artist married to a cruel, cheating hitman * rival criminal gangs * forbidden love * he's still grieving dead wife * lies, manipulation and betrayal created by OM * with others during separation (her- not by choice) * she's severely abused * he finds out * gang violence, retaliation and revenge * he rescues her * her husband escapes * they are both traumatized at the end

Penelope Sky had me feeling a lot of emotions reading this book. She had me wanting to cry, feel mad, and appalled and so much more several times in this book. This triangle between Theo, Astrid and Bolton gets so intense and dangerous, it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
When Astrid picked Bolton over Theo it crushed him. No matter what he said or did she would not entertain the idea especially when he wasn’t there for her on one occasion. Did he finally tell her about why he broke up with her? Bolton would not let Astrid leave him after the second time she went back to him. He he became so abusive to her with anything she said or did. She became his prisoner. Theo didn’t know any of this was going on because when she needed him again he shut her down because he thought she wanted to talk about their break up. Once he found out he went to Bolton’s to save her. Of course, Axel was right there with him because he always has Theo’s back and will do anything for him. Read this book to see what lead her to go to back to Bolton’s house and if she can be saved. The next book release of “It Destroys Me” can’t come fast enough. This series is fantastic! Penelope Sky’s writing is extraordinary.
