Obelisk System Integration is the start of this epic LitRPG Apocalypse series. This action-packed LitRPG/Progression series has our heroes facing off an alien invasion, academy politics, PvP and tower ascension, all to save Earth from being destroyed.
While I like a main character who has a different personality, this main character is so frustrating. He is very set in his ways and there's no character growth. He loses his " life" so it's nice that there's a consequence but he doesn't take anything seriously enough for the scale and scope of how screwed they all are. And for all of the stats he's putting into understanding, he still isn't very smart. He on several occasions refuses to do things that the alien overlords tell them are the rules and he gets consequences but they're always consequences that are bearable enough. The aliens could have taken away his whole ability to visit Earth and save it if there's a big monster coming and they didn't because that would be too big a consequence for what the author wanted to write. So it's not good writing to have a careless MC who never has to deal with consequences in a way that makes them grow from it.
Very difficult to get into the story when the main character “Warren” is not someone who you care about. Oh … there are attempts to humanize him but because the author has decided he is going to be abusive to others to make him more “cool”? It doesn’t make a lot of sense. This type of character is my antithesis. The story skips around to other characters as well so the plot does not move forward very fast. The decision the MC makes are asinine but then I think that is what the author is going for. Maybe in later books there is redemption but it is very off putting. Many plot holes on how it should have moved forward if there was a ounce of thought put into the plot.
I may be bias that I don’t like really dumb Neanderthal type main characters… but if there is your cup of tea… this is the series for you.
Again with the pop culture. I'll tell ya'll again, I think dropping pop culture references into a story automatically gives the work a limited shelf life. Younger generations probably won't want to read something that they will have no frame of reference for. Sure some might look up those references, but most won't. Most were movies and game references this time around. I will post mistakes on Goodreads. Still haven't managed to find it on Royalroad. So if you do then please drop me a quick message on Goodreads.
5/10 I really dislike pop culture references in books.
Ohhhh gods man, I loved this action-driven litRPG! Obelisk is definitely moving up the series list of my favorites. It's not only action-driven but full of wry wit and laughs as Warren and his team rise up in power, stats, riches, and prestige. Next stop is gaining mastery over the murder Beasts he currently has in stasis. So yeah grab this book and join me reading Obelisk 3... because you're not gonna wanna stop after reading the first book.
I'm still having a lot of fun with this series, though Warren, the leader, is starting to grate on me a bit; I'm lowering my score by one star. For instance, in the middle of a life-and-death battle, he refused to rank up, which almost killed him, but he didn't seem to learn that lesson, and he doesn't come across as that stupid. People who don't learn from mistakes in battle die, and plot armor gets old fast. Otherwise, it's still a fun series, and I'm already into the next book.
More fantastic action and great character building. This one gets more into what's going on in the universe at large and continues Warrens rampage o'fun. And he's totally not overcompensating.
I admit I sometimes try to read through some of the stuff quickly, because I want to get to more of the story lines. It has been only getting better as the books go on, so am very excited and happy with all this series.
