Poisoners of Paris #1
Immortal Bones
Vampires are the mortal enemies of witches. This one seems to have missed the memo.
Tariq doesn’t practice magic. He gave it up five years ago when he escaped his family. Life as a human isn’t so bad. He likes being normal.
But then his friend goes missing.
How can he help her without magic? But if he embraces magic, that means giving in to temptation. Tariq’s family has always operated on the darker side of the law, and he just can’t do those things anymore.
But a human doesn’t stand much chance against vampires and witches.
Just when he thinks he might have to turn to his family, the vampire shows up and offers to help. Emery is enigmatic and charming—and oddly endearing, but he definitely has a hidden agenda. And his definition of help comes with a side dose of stalking, secrets, and the occasional dead body.
With time running out, Tariq might not have much choice. But between a murderous six-year-old ghost, his extremely dysfunctional family, and the vampire that sets his heart racing, where does he turn?
And in a city where help always comes at a price, will he be willing to pay it?
***
Immortal Bones is the first in a four-book urban fantasy romance with a queer MC. The books must be read in order. One click now to explore the haunted corners of Paris’s nightlife in a way you’ve never seen before.
The book contains mild violence. The spice level increases gradually over the course of the series.

I love urban fantasy so I really enjoyed this book with witches and vampires. I liked the mystery surrounding Connie’s disappearance. I’m excited to continue this series and learn more about the characters and hidden supernatural world that was introduced because there’s definitely more going on that we don’t know about just yet.

A Joyfully Jay review.
3.75 stars
This is the first book in the Poisoners of Paris series, with a projected length of four books, and it ends in a cliffhanger. Two of them, really, and so far I’m curious enough to want to see what the next books have to offer, especially since I have so many questions …
Just enough information is handed out to let me know what’s going on in a scene, but always through necessary conversations. There are no infodumps, no character monologuing over the nature of magic or politics, and I appreciate that. The world building is subtle but still fun, and Tariq is a flawed, somewhat unpleasant character. He’s a poor friend, a poor ally, and there are hints that — in the past — he’s done things of questionable natures …

Can't stand cliff hangers
Will not read another 1 of these books because I do not like cliffhangers and it did not say that it was a cliffhanger at the beginning This book is useless to me

Connie is an abusive piece of garbage. She is toxic, dangerous, unbearable. Really made me dislike the story too.

Immortal Bones, the first book in Margot de Klerk’s Poisoners of Paris series, is a book that instantly grabbed my attention. It sounded like it would tick so many of my boxes, and I was excited for a new series to follow. At first, I was hooked. However, as the story progressed, my feelings changed. By the end, I was conflicted.
Immortal Bones was a story that hooked my attention with ease at the start, leaving me curious about where the story was heading. Although there were some things that did pull me slightly out of the story – such as very British phrases and idioms being used by French characters – I was able to overlook these aspects because of how eager I was to see how things would come together. With lots of moving parts, I was excited for what would come next. Although I remained curious throughout, my interest in the story did lessen somewhat as things progressed. Not because of what was happening – as I was interested – but because of the way the characters became inconsistent. The low level of mystery was replaced with extremely obvious aspects that came about through the way the characters seemed to suddenly change. Rather than remaining true to what was known about them at the start of the book, they became whatever was needed for the story to move forward. It meant lots of things were suddenly unclear because the main character was suddenly extremely naïve and unaware. While this made sense to an extent, there were other elements that felt like they should have been known. Thus, it made things rather inconsistent for me, and this impacted my enjoyment. It turned what had started as a four-star rating into a three-star rating.
I will be honest and say that my conflicted feelings did leave me on the fence about reading the next book. As I am curious about what is to come, I am going to give it a try – with my fingers crossed for more consistency in the next book. My hope is that the second book improves upon these aspects, allowing me to remain interested in the overall storyline.

3.5⭐️ but I'd rather give it a 4 over a 3 due to its potential
Immortal Bones by Margot de Klerk is a compelling dive into a world where magic and the supernatural collide with everyday struggles. The story follows Tariq, a man who has turned his back on magic and his tumultuous family to live a normal life. His tranquility is shattered when his friend goes missing, forcing him to confront his past and the magical world he left behind.
The novel begins with a slow start, which might be off-putting for some readers. Tariq’s initial reluctance and frustration with his situation set a tone of skepticism that can be challenging to overcome. However, as the narrative progresses, the plot gains momentum, weaving an intriguing tale filled with supernatural intrigue and moral dilemmas.
One of the book’s strengths is its portrayal of Tariq’s inner conflict. His struggle between embracing magic and staying true to his principles adds depth to his character. The introduction of Emery, the enigmatic vampire who offers assistance, adds an element of unpredictability and suspense. Emery's charm and hidden agenda keep the reader guessing, though his interactions with Tariq sometimes verge on the sinister.
While Immortal Bones excels in creating a suspenseful atmosphere with its mix of supernatural elements, it does leave some questions unanswered. Additionally, the absence of any romantic subplot may disappoint readers who enjoy a touch of romance in their fantasy reads. Despite these points, the novel builds a fascinating world and sets the stage for future adventures.
Overall, Immortal Bones is a gripping read that improves as it progresses. It’s a worthwhile choice for fans of urban fantasy who appreciate a mix of mystery, magic, and moral ambiguity. Here’s hoping the next installment addresses the lingering questions and perhaps introduces a hint of romance to spice things up.

ARC REVIEW -
There are books for everyone, but this one was not for me. These are just my opinions and impressions, but it is what it is. The main plot is interesting, the worldbuilding is mainly traditional but fine, and there's a lot of magic, which is great. It seems like the recipe for a very nice story, but it didn't work for me.
At the beginning, things are mysterious, and many secrets are mentioned. It got my attention! However, by the end of the book, many things were left unclear. Some things were resolved, but in an unexplained, unrealistic, and confusing way. There are more hooks for the sequel than resolutions in this book. There are too many loose threads, and what was promised as a box of surprises became a messy bin.
Another issue, in my opinion, is the characters. Tariq is the main one. In the beginning, he seems to be a nice person trying to build his life far from his witch family, but as the story evolves, he becomes more of a naive, gullible person who has forgotten almost everything he learned about magic and the supernatural world, making the worst decisions possible in a weak and inconsistent way. If he were a pre-teen, it would be more believable. So, I couldn't connect with him at all.
Emery seems more interesting. I prefer a focused narrator as in this book, and we know more about Tariq, but what we know about Emery seems more consistent with an old vampire. However, until now, he's a secondary character who sometimes has a lot of power and other times couldn't hear something happening a few paces away.
I'm curious about how the story evolves, and for that, I would read the sequel, but due to the risk of being kept in the dark again and having to face so many inconsistencies, I will probably pass on it.

Who do trust: family who’ve never been there for you, mortal enemies from the beginning of time, or people who you’ve just met? If each wants something from you, would you sell your blood, identity, &/or personal values so innocents don’t get hurt? If your integrity is compromised, does this make you evil? If so, is there a possibility for redemption?
This is Tariq Deshayes’ story, one of identity, grief, & anxiety mixed with magic & laced with history. A story in which he meets Emery, a vampire who’ll change the course of his life; Merle, an unlikely ally, albeit a reluctant one, who holds secrets of her own; & Connie, a friend who he holds dear despite feeling obligated.
Tariq Deshayes wants to leave Paris immediately. When he & Connie are stuck without shelter, he could call his family…if he didn’t excommunicate himself—“could” being the operative word. He severed all connections to his family because they’ve used magic to harm innocents. Instead, they meet Merle, who opens her home & befriends them.
Then, Connie is kidnapped, & terrible events occur! Tariq increasingly trusts Merle, & they set out to find Connie together. New developments unfold, & Tariq continuously refuses Emery’s incessant desire to “help.” Why would a witch trust a vampire?! When all avenues are exhausted, Tariq must choose to use his magic or suppress this integral part of his identity to save Connie & solve the many mysteries swirling around him.
Tariq is an endearing character; you just want to hug & tell him, “Everything will be okay.” He’s compassionate & loyal, anxious & scared. He has a strong moral compass & must find his self-confidence & bravery to battle the evil that’s ahead.
Join Tariq & company in their mystical adventures of light & darkness in Immortal Bones by Margot de Klerk. Just like Tariq, you’ll be left with more questions than answers, so go into this book knowing future books are coming!
Happy belated book birthday!🥳

Tariq Deshayes is NC with his high ranking witch family. He has been for the last 5 years. So why is his sister calling now and how does she know he’s in Paris? He only just got here and it wasn’t his intention to be staying. With the help of a few new friends and an unfortunate situation with a vampire Tariq hopes he can figure it all out and find his now missing friend Connie.
First of all I absolutely adored this book. The descriptions of Paris were nearly as breathtaking as being there and I never felt like I was missing anything (aside from the questions that were proposed)
Tariq as a character is flawed and every bit as unsure as the rest of us. I loved watching him grow and understand that something may have to happen in order to reach his end goal. Emery was a delight and I genuinely adore him. I cannot wait for the next book to see what the future holds for our little crew.
I found the constant bickering between Connie and Tariq a bit exaggerated and slightly unrealistic but it never took away from the plot so I wasn’t too upset. I am very curious if Connie will end up being able to break out of what happens at the end the same way that Merle’s mother was and what impacts that would have on their friendship in the future.
My biggest wtf was at the end with Merle and Rafael because I wa definitely under the impression he was a bad guy but I kind of love him.

I felt like a detective following plot breadcrumbs in the magical city that is Paris, where witches and vampires believe themselves above the humans.
At the beginning, I felt like everyone was mad all the time and it aggravated me to no end but, let’s be honest, we all had those moments when nothing goes according to plan and everything sets you off.
The characters are very relatable and the plot twists are not that obvious, which is definitely a whole star in itself!
-*-*-*-
Tariq ran from his past, his family and vowed never to use dark magic again.
Everything seemed to work out for five years as he mingled amongst humans, pretending to be one of them while concealing his powers.
But Tariq’s best friend commits suicide, leaving him to deal with his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Connie.
Just as halloween is rounding the corner, they find themselves stuck in Paris due to train strikes with barely any money left and a very cranky Connie, snapping at every turn.
The strike is not the worst of Tariq’s problems: Staying hidden from the magic community is hard but harder yet is to prevent his family from knowing he is back in town.
The cherry on top: Connie goes missing after a night out and Tariq suspects witches are involved.
He will do anything to get her back, even if it means using his magic and involving the vampires.

I really enjoyed this book.
Took me 2 days because I was reading another book before I began this one, but I wish I had finished it sooner!
The plot behind this book, the characters, the problems they face in this book - I’m so fascinated by it all!
From Connie being taken, finding out her baby’s father committed suicide, figuring out Tarqin’s family is well know & what his sister said being true about another sibling. It blew my mind.
I love the whole witch, human, vampire thing - and the thought to be ghost of an ancestor. I love the name Emery and the way Tarqin and Merle became a duo working together at one point. The betrayal from not only family but from a friend as well.
I want more ! I couldn’t get enough of this!
Rated 4 out of 5 because I truly wished we saw more of Emery and Tarqin together, I absolutely loved their meetings! Also finding out about the Alliance and why they took who they took and killed who they killed - why they hated anyone non-human.
I can’t wait for more !

Immortal Bones is an urban fantasy novel set in Paris, that follows Immortal Bones is an urban fantasy novel set in Paris, that follows Tariq Deshayes, a witch who favours no contact with his family due to their dealings with dark magic. However, he is left with little choice but to reconnect with his family when his pregnant friend, Connie is kidnapped. And, he may need to enlist the help of a vampire. But let’s not forget that vampires are witches sworn enemies.
I really enjoyed this novel, especially since the setting was different to most other novels I’ve read, since it was set in Paris. I felt enticed to carry on reading at every page as new clues came to light about Connie’s disappearance. It was fun to try and connect the dots as more things were uncovered, whilst watching Tariq’s relationships develop.
I received the opportunity to read this as an ARC, which I am very grateful for. Thank you to Margot De Klerk for this opportunity. I would love to read more of your novels in the future.

I rather enjoyed this book, the urban fantasy is a great genre, and I enjoyed this take on vampires and witches. I enjoyed the subtle character development, and just when you think you know the why the plot is gonna go, it will completely change on you. Tariq has an inner struggle that drives the story. The secrets each character reveals is vital to the unraveling plots. Emery is even less than an open book, coming with his own secrets
In the beginning, I have never wanted a book character to disappear as much as Connie. She was insufferable. I was actually happy she got kidnapped because I finally got a great from her insufferable personality. I could have read the whole book without her.
Overall, definitely recommend, and I’ll be reading the next book in the series. I usually like a little more romance in my books, but this one kept an interesting pace. It keeps a steady pace that will keep you reading.
*Reader Note: I received a free copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews (GRR), and this is my honest review.

One thing I look for in the first book of an urban fantasy series is great world building that sucks me in with enough information to understand what's going on in the story, but also with lots of hints about more interesting things in the world I'm going to learn in future books. This book definitely did that. I can't wait to find out more about how this world works and how the vampire, witches and humans will be interacting. There was a good missing person mystery here and I found it interesting that Tariq has given up magic and feels about it almost like an addict who has left the drug behind but is fearful that if he uses it to find his friend, he'll be unable to resist the temptation to continue to use and and even slip back into old habits with this family. Emery makes an intriguing companion in Tariq's search and these two have great chemistry that pulls them toward each other even across the vampire/witch line. Very much looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

This book seemed exactly like the genre I really prefer over all others, and I was exactly right. Tariq is a tortured character in some ways because of his family, and he seems a little lost. His concern and care over Connie were nice, which supposedly sets him apart from his family. I liked him, and I can’t wait to see what is up with Emery. They’ll make an interesting couple…if I’m right. The only thing I didn’t really like about this was that all the characters just seemed so snippy and aggravated all the time. Never happy about anything. That aside I really enjoyed this urban fantasy detective story, and I am excited to read the next one when it comes. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

A well fleshed out world, solid characters, and a twisty plot added up to a satisfying read, even when the end goal wasn’t what I thought it would be. Sometimes I felt like the main character was a little wishy-washy, but I can’t honestly say I’d be any different in the same situation. I also was beginning to think that there was too much happening to our main character for one guy; but as more details were revealed, it became apparent why. The ending successfully tread the line between “solving” the main problem of the story while leaving enough open threads to show that the real issue has yet to be resolved. So I got a satisfying finish, but also have a hefty amount of anticipation for the next book.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really enjoyed this book. I’ve never really read an urban fantasy so I thought I’d dip my toes in to the sub genre with this book. I really liked the magic system and how we learned about it throughout the book rather than just being info dumped. I liked Tariq and learning about him and the complex relationships with his family. I also enjoyed the mystery element of this book and how none of the plot points were predictable, it was very well written. I think I’ll definitely pick up the next books in this series to find out more about Tariq and Emery and I’m really curious about Tariq’s family.

I enjoyed the plot of this story very much… the fact it took place in Paris I had a rough time with…. I felt like parts were off…. But it could have just been my brain since I haven’t been there in over 10 years.
The story follows a young warlock….. witch…. Idk…. That has had a fallout with his family, left completely to live life with the humans and then find himself stranded in Paris with his very pregnant friend Connie, where his family practically rules.
There were some great twists in the story that have me excited to read the next one.
Thank you for allowing me an advanced reader copy of this story!
The story follows a young warlock….. witch…. Idk…. That has had a fallout with his family, left completely to live life with the humans and then find himself stranded in Paris with his very pregnant friend Connie, where his family practically rules.

Magic, vampires and enemies
This book has some really interesting world building and combines fantasy and enemies to lovers which are two of my favorite tropes.
There is a cliffhanger which would be good to note in the blurb!
There is very little heat (except for arguments lol) because Tariq and Tom start out as enemies, but there is enough heat in their arguments that I foresee great potential in their relationship.
This is the first book that I have read from Margot de Klerk and I will be looking for more. I just hope they don’t all have cliffhangers.

I read this book in one day! It was such a fun read. “Immortal Bones” is an urban fantasy about witches & vampires. The MMC is Tariq Deshayes, a witch who has distanced himself from his family because he doesn’t agree with their ways. Tariq & his pregnant human friend, Connie, get stranded in Paris. Everything is going fine until Connie goes missing. Tariq does everything he can think of to find her. Even enlist a vampire to help even though vampires & witches loathe each other.

A thrilling urban fantasy diving into the supernatural world of witches and vampires set in Paris.
I loved the drama of Tariq's family dynamics and secrets, coupled with the divide of the supernatural Vs human world. It had intriguing mystery, creative twists, and hinted at the start of an enemy to lover M/M romance. The range of powers was intriguing too, and curious to know more about the bond.
A great start to the series and excited to see more from Tariq and Emery.

I received this as an advanced reader copy for free. I am posting my review entirely on my own merit.
I will admit it took me a bit to get into this book, but man when I got into it I couldn’t put it down! I loved the mystery surrounding Connie’s disappearance. I loved how determined Tariq remained to help her. Never once giving up on his friend! And can I just say the ending?! Has me on the edge of my seat. I will with certainty be reading the second book when it comes out!

3.5 ⭐️
This book started with a main plot that caught my interest, it was an easy read and I love reading new stories about magic and witches and vampires.
The world building and the characters was good and there was a lot of mystery that made me want to continue, but as I keep reading, there was no explanation of some situations, I got confused and began to lose interest.
Maybe I can read the sequel to see if I resolve what this first one left me pending.

Tariq is a witch, who has separated himself from his magic and his family. He somehow ends up back in his home city of Paris. He finds himself 'babysitting' his best friends pregnant girlfriend, after his untimely demise.
The story follows the Tariq as he deals with the fallout of being stuck in Paris whilst trying to keep himself and his friend safe from the world of mortals, witches and vampires, as well as keeping them hidden from his family.

What an amazing read. It was gripping and engaging throughout with several twists throughout and it ends on such a cliffhanger, cannot wait to read the next book in the series. This book was such a great way to kick off a series. If you love magic, supernatural characters, mystery, fantasy etc, I highly recommend you read this book. I cannot wait to see where this series goes.

ARC REVIEW- This book was very slow for me and my interest was, honestly, hanging on by a thread. I did enjoy the fluidity of the writing style and the way it is descriptive with characters and locations. The plot and overall story was really good I just felt like it drug on unnecessarily to get to main points.

ARC review
I was kindly given this as an arc read and honestly I am so excited to carry this series on.
In this story you meet Tariq as he tries to find his missing pregnant friend Connie.
A whole host of twists turns and supernatural events happen and I went omg! I don’t know how many times.
I can not wait for this series to continue and learn more of this world.

Witches, magic, and Paris?! Yes, please! I really enjoyed this book! It was different that what I normally gravitate towards (I'm not big into books with vampires) but this one piqued my interest. I liked the mystery and trying to put the pieces together. Margot did a good job with world building and the magic system. Can't wait to dive into book 2!

3.75/5 stars! This is the first entry in the "Poisoners of Paris" series. I do wish it had been more obvious that this would end on several cliffhangers and is not able to be read as a standalone. I liked the majority of the characters. The world is interesting, but could have been a bit more developed. Overall, I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes.
