Healing of the Heart by Heidi Gray McGill is a spiritual prescription for the soul, a literary infusion of faith that leaves readers uplifted and inspired. Whether you're drawn to historical detail, poignant explorations of faith and redemption, or simply crave an inspirational tale that will keep you turning pages long into the night, Healing of the Heart delivers on every front.

Healing of the Heart by Heidi Gray McGill is an extraordinary literary gem that transports readers back to the tumultuous post-Civil War era, where the clash of societal norms and personal convictions ignites a powerful narrative of faith, love, and redemption. With finesse, McGill paints a vivid portrait of 1870s Philadelphia, immersing readers in a world where the battle between light and darkness rages not only in society but also within the hearts of its inhabitants.

At the heart of this captivating tale is Thomas, a young doctor whose journey from the wilds of Missouri to the bustling streets of Philadelphia is fraught with challenges and soul-searching. As Thomas grapples with the weight of his calling and the temptations of the world, McGill masterfully illustrates the timeless struggle between worldly desires and the unwavering truths of the Christian faith.

Healing of the Heart stands apart with its ensemble of deeply human characters, each wrestling with the trials of everyday life while seeking refuge in the arms of faith. From the spirited Theodora Morse to the steadfast figures of Douglass and Harriet, every character embodies the transformative power of God's love, offering readers a poignant portrayal of the profound impact of living a life rooted in faith.

Throughout the novel, McGill's reverence for the Christian faith shines brightly, infusing every page with a palpable sense of divine presence. From heartfelt prayers to poignant reflections on Scripture, the narrative is imbued with the unmistakable essence of faith, serving as a beacon of hope in a world shrouded in darkness.

Here is one of the passionate prayers Teddy said before reading a passage in the Bible: “Lord, may the words I read today invade my whole being and transform me. Enlighten me with your words as if they are new. Make them a part of me so I may share you with someone I come in contact with. Help me be a light to one who lives in darkness and an encouragement to one whose flame is burning low.”

As I journeyed alongside Thomas and his companions, I was moved by the depth of emotion and spiritual insight woven into every interaction. McGill's prose pulsates with the heartbeat of conviction and the healing touch of faith, leaving an enduring impression that lingers in the hearts of readers like a gentle, reassuring pulse, long after the last word has been spoken.

For those seeking a riveting fusion of faith, history, and storytelling, Healing of the Heart is an absolute must-read! This novel transcends genres, offering a transformative journey for readers of all backgrounds and interests.

I received a digital copy of Healing of the Heart from the author. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

"Healing of the Heart" by Heidi Gray McGill takes readers on a profound journey exploring themes of choice, endurance, and the triumph of love amidst adversity. McGill demonstrates remarkable skill in crafting characters whose names aptly reflect their personalities, drawing readers into their lives and also the narrative's story and era from the outset.

The novel delves into timeless themes such as purpose, resilience, and the conflict between genuine values and the allure of power and privilege. Against the backdrop of personal trials and tragic events, characters grapple with the age-old adage of surrendering to God's will. Choices between love and carnal desire are woven into the narrative, as protagonists navigate the complexities of life while clinging to their faith.

Through the hardships they face, characters find solace in true friendships and the support of 'adoptive' families, highlighting the importance of authenticity and maintaining spiritual devotion. The narrative underscores the significance of hard work, importance of faith, the comforts of home, and the value of community.

In "Healing of the Heart," McGill delivers a powerful tale that resonates with readers long after the final page is turned. With its rich tapestry of themes and characters, it serves as a reminder of the enduring strength found in living a life of purpose, love, and faith.

I really enjoyed this story of Theodora, “Teddy”, who is a nurse trying to make her own way. And Thomas, who is studying to become a Doctor and trying to fit in with Philadelphia’s upper class. They are both staying in the same boarding house and get to know one another. They both have dealings with Dr Whitaker’s family. Thomas with the beautiful daughter, Emmaline and Teddy unfortunately for her with Dr Whitaker. As Teddy and Thomas grow closer they help one another. I really loved both of the characters. They are both strong with their walk with God. I also enjoyed all the side characters in the boarding house and Teddy and Thomas’ friends. This book has very strong Christian content and I just loved it! Overall a great story and I definitely recommend!

Teddy trying to recover from the loss of her husband and faced to go on alone, has lots of decisions to make. She wants to leave. Thomas, moving from Missouri to a new city for two years to attend medical school is also plagued with lots of decisions. He decides to write to a mail-order bride but isn't sure he wants a marriage.

The characters got my attention right away due to an exciting start to the story. They are complicated and move through lots of unexpected circumstances, decisions that are hard to make, and betrayal. Teddy struggles with his faith. The story is uplifting and touched my heart as I felt compassion for them. This book draws you in I couldn't put it down. So much going on from the beginning to keep your interest. I can't wait to read the next installment in the series.

Heidi Gray McGill is one of my favorite authors. I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read by her and Healing of the Heart is no exception. She’s a master at Christian historical fiction. She weaves faith through her books in such a beautiful way. Take this quote, a prayer said by one of the characters before they start their quiet time:

“Lord, may the words I read today invade my whole being and transform me. Enlighten me with your words as if they are new. Make them a part of me so I may share you with someone I come in contact with. Help me be a light to one who lives in darkness and an encouragement to one whose flame is burning low.”

Her characters are real and they struggle like the rest of us, but their faith inspires me.

I highly recommend reading these books in order, though I think this book can stand alone just fine. But it’s more fun reading this book if you’ve gotten to know Thomas as he’s grown up from a precocious little boy.

If you’ve not read this author yet, what are you waiting for? So good!

Healing of the Heart is the first book written by Heidi Gray McGill that I have read. It was very well written. It instantly captured my attention and swept me along for the story. It was an easy read and very enjoyable.

The character development in the book was good and complex. There is a web of characters, which we get some insight into each one. Which makes for a rich and fulfilling book. Having well rounded characters always makes for a great read.

The historical aspect was great. It really took me back to what I imagine the late 1800s looked like in Philadelphia. The everyday life, it was definitely a different time back then.

The storyline was good. A little slow moving at times, but overall, very enjoyable.

Heidi Gray McGill so beautifully intertwined God, faith and scripture throughout the whole story. It was really well done. I am always on the lookout for a great Christian fiction, and this one really intertwined faith well throughout.

Healing of the Heart is an impressive addition to the wonderful Discerning God’s Best series! Like the other books in the series, this faith-filled book touched my heart and stirred my soul. It transports us to 1870s Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and then back to Shumard Oak Bend, Missouri, where we first met Thomas as a young boy. He is now an adult torn between establishing and advancing his career as a doctor and his faith. His captivating journey brings cheers and tears as he forms new relationships, some of which turn out to be quite negative, and faces societal influences to find God’s perfect will for his life. Beautifully crafted characters main and secondary drive the story. Thomas and Teddy are the perfect couple, and I love how their relationship develops. The strong faith thread beautifully woven through the characters’ lives so naturally is encouraging and uplifting. I appreciate the relevant spiritual lesson in seeking God’s guidance then allowing Him to work in His timing and reminders of the importance of forgiveness, and grace. I loved this book and highly recommend it and the series.

This was my first book by McGill. She did a great job of making the 1800s come alive and it felt real to the time and place. The romance was an extremely slow burn as the characters wrestled with letting go of their wants and desires and realized that they needed God's guidance in their lives before making decisions on their own. I loved the correlation within that to the story of Elijah and his dealing with King Ahab and Queen Jezebel later in the story. The side plots and characters were all fantastic and realistic. I especially loved Harriet and Douglass and the subplot concerning Teddy. It did make me grateful to live in a time and age where reporting someone for the evil they've done would no longer be referred to as gossiping, but as holding that person responsible for their actions (something to keep in mind for other readers since it was in a different time). I'm thankful that aspect of the story can be different in today's world. The book was a good reminder of how far it's come, and an inspiration to continue that fight of injustice.

I received a complimentary copy of the book, and a positive review is not required.

The Shankel Family saga continues in Healing of the Heart by Heidi Gray McGill.

Book 4 of the Discerning God's Best series follows Thomas Shankel as he travels from Missouri to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to attend medical school. His plan is deceptively simple: get his training and certifications, then return to Shumard Oak Bend to provide medical care to the people of his hometown. He finds a room in a boarding house where, on his very first day, he literally runs into a woman unlike any he's ever met.

Teddy's goals are slightly different. A Pennsylvania farmer's daughter, she's always wanted more than marriage, family, and farm. When she had the opportunity to learn nursing during the Civil War, she used her experiences to get a job in Philadelphia's hospital. While she loves working with patients, dealing with doctors is another story. Unlike Thomas, Teddy has no desire to return home. Instead, she works two jobs and shares a room in a boarding house as she saves to buy a house of her own.

Healing of the Heart is a beautiful Christian historical novel with heart and depth.

Note from the Author:

I’ve loved Thomas from the moment he came to life in my mind. Watching him grow from a sweet child in the Discerning God’s Best Series has been a joy. Thomas is adventurous and full of life.

We first meet four-year-old Thomas in Deep in My Heart, the prequel to the series. He becomes a central character in Desire of My Heart, where many readers are moved by his maturity and resilience despite his young age. Thomas is inspired by my grandson and my hopes for his future.

Throughout the series, Thomas matures and, at 20, heads to Philadelphia to study medicine. This is his first time leaving Shumard Oak Bend since he arrived in 1858. Though born into high society, he has only known the frontier life. In Philadelphia, he needs more than intelligence and common sense; he must navigate the social circles of the elite.

Thomas is no stranger to challenges and relies on his faith for strength and guidance. However, the temptation to fit in and achieve his goals leads him to follow others instead of God.

I loved writing this story and hope that through the characters' actions and decisions, God reveals Himself to you.

Loved Teddy and Thomas's story!! Thomas meets Teddy when he goes to Philadelphia for medical school, and gets a room in the same boarding house that Teddy lives in. Teddy isn't looking for romance; she wants to save her money and buy a house and make her own way in the world. Thomas wants to become a doctor and go back to his home in Shumard Oak Bend. Little do either of them know what God has in store for them! Thomas gets sidetracked, but then figures things out with the help of a dear friend. Love how both learn to trust God and give Him control!!

God knows best

This, book 4 of the Discerning God’s Best, is my favorite of the series so far!

An amazing story with wonderfully realistic characters kept me wanting more. This author has an amazing gift of dealing with the evils of this world in a way that doesn’t take you the pit of despair but rather flips the situation into faith and hope with fluidity. This story does just that and more with a strong salvation theme. I love everything about this book and highly recommend it. I can’t wait for the next installment of this series!

I’ve been waiting impatiently to learn more about Thomas’s story and here it is! This fourth book in Heidi Gray McGill’s Discerning God’s Best (Shumard Oak Bend) series focuses on grown up Thomas and we follow him to Philadelphia where he studies medicine to become a doctor and return home to care for his beloved town. He makes lifelong friends at his boardinghouse and in town, and discovers some folks are not what they seem as he navigates his studies and new responsibilities. Douglass and Harriet help keep him grounded in his faith and Teddy (Theodora) is a good friend to him who just might become more. This story may take place in the early 1870’s, but the situations Thomas encounters are timeless and good reminders to allow God to direct our steps.

This was such a good, historical, heartfelt read. I loved the characters, the setting and the storyline. Teddy who has been residing at a boarding house, works day and night to make ends meet and she has settled into this routine. When her reputation is threatened and she starts slipping in her work and soon she finds herself in a dire situation. Thomas has travels to Philadelphia to further his medical education, so he can eventually take those skills back to his hometown in Missouri where they are in dire need of a doctor. He finds himself a nice room at a boarding house with an array of other characters. While Thomas proves himself in his education, at being one of the top in his class he is starting to realize that the extracurricular activities he has been invited to and attending is part of a more elaborate plan and in order to obtain what Thomas wants in his schooling, he just might have to sacrifice his future plans. When Thomas finds out what has really happened with Teddy, he knows what his decision will be regarding his future. Teddy realizes that the Lord always provides, and she needs to be open to what he is providing and trust that faith once again. I really enjoyed this story and will look to reading the others. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

This is a good story with some Christian elements thrown in. At times, the Christian elements felt a bit forced, and that's probably my biggest complaint. Along with that, it does have a few places where I feel like the story skips ahead, leaving us wondering what happened or why it happened.

This book does not have any swearing, graphic sexual content, or graphic violence. It does discuss some potentially sensitive topics, including racism, sexual harassment/sexual assault, death, classism, and mental health.

This book is part of a series. I haven't read any of the other books in the series. It felt like a standalone novel to me. I hadn't even realized that there were other books. At most, some of the characters from the other books are minor characters, mostly just mentioned by name in the book. If you like good Christian romance novels, and you don't mind a bit of preaching, this book is for you.

I seem to be on a roll!
Another excellent Christian author!
Another novel, filled with deep faith and spiritual content.
I love the prayers, and scriptures, and application of Scripture.

Also there were a few 'failures' of the various characters,
but God provided other believers,
and His Word, to bring the wandering Christian back.

It was another novel that brought tears of sadness, and joy.
I found myself saying amen,
and that is me Lord, please forgive me.

I loved it, it was stunning, and beautiful.

Better and Better!

I have enjoyed each of the books in the Shumard Oak Bend series. In Healing of the Heart, we follow Thomas to medical school in Philadelphia. Just like today, we see the world trying to draw students away from God. I love Thomas' perseverance as he strives to honor God. Very thankful for authors like Heidi Gray McGill who write true Christian fiction!

Let me state up front, no one made me purchase this book, no one gave me the book to review, the fact is, I purchased the book because I respect the work of Heidi Gray McGill. McGill is one of a select group of authors, which I do not know personally, but when I pick up their books to read, I can count on to be entertained, but more importantly be edified by themes that point to God’s truth. I repeatedly tell people, good Christian fiction should edify, be scripture drenched, and leave the reader motivated to walk worthy. This was a poignant story with a powerfully crafted supporting story cast apprised of: strong plot, characters both good and bad, and themes that are played out so strongly that even the most callous soul is pricked by their clarion truth.

Some of My Highlighted Elements:
• “Indecision is a Decision” – On page 289, Thomas, who has been struggling throughout his time in Philadelphia concerning the call God had on his life, which seems to frequently conflict with expectations from his new Philadelphian constituents has an epiphany. The epiphany, he remembers the words from Douglass “Indecision is a Decision.” Thomas likes to meet people’s expectations and understanding that, it seemed as if he was avoiding the truth he knows in his heart. This book added layers to the title of this series, “Discerning God’s Best.” No Choice is a Choice. Thomas remembers to fix his eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).
• As a musician, I enjoyed the little factoid about Matthias Hohner and the crafting of the diatonic harmonica.
• Jimmy was a great secondary character, who becomes a fellow medical student and good friend to Thomas. Jimmy appeared to be a “quiet seeker” and not yet a believer, but when Thomas is struggling, he helps him by quoted back to his friend the truth of God’s word. Things like, “the internship—it’s only one part of a bigger plan, you know…God’s plan.” He reminds Thomas, “God is not the author of confusion but of peace.” Ha, it is so easy to struggle over a decision we do not want to make, when we could be resting in the arms of the author of peace.
• Douglass and his wife Harriet are God-sent friends that help Thomas in a myriad of ways. At one point, Douglass dispenses some good advice saying, “Sometimes, we have to accept that we can’t fix everything.” In otherwards, you (Thomas) are NOT God.
• There was a powerful moment when Thomas strides purposefully toward Dr. Whitaker’s office to find Teddy. Not to give details away, he finds his esteemed mentor in an unprofessional situation and Thomas is flummoxed. The man he trusted, looked up to, even considered marrying into his family, was totally despicable. attacking Teddy. I found two dynamic Quotes that popped out from this situation:
o “He knew the decision he made in this moment would shape not only his own future but Teddy’s as well.”
o Then his mentor, in an attempt to coerce Thomas states, “Choose wisely, Thomas. A decision like this will alter your future.” WOW.
o This whole vignette was so Joshua 24:15, “…Choose ye this day whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

This is a wonderful book; I am so glad I was able to read it.

I enjoyed hearing about the young adult life of Thomas, who we met in the first book as a child. To think that his story finally came about to be written about really made me happy. You could see how his personality was still there (fun, respectful, hardworking, and kind). Even with the hardships he endured, you could see how loved he felt as a grown man.

Most of this story is just about Thomas' time in Philadelphia during his schooling and training to become a doctor. It is nice to know that part of the inspiration for him wanting to be a doctor was in part to Robin (another character of the past).

If you are expecting an automatic connection and back and forth dialogue between Thomas and the other main character of this book, Teddy (Theodora), it will take its time very slowly. While we do get some back story for Teddy, and we can see where her heart is starting to take her, I feel like there should have been more interactions written about between her and Thomas. Thomas has another person his mind has been swayed slightly by named Emmaline, who actually has more written interactions with (I wanted equal the amount if not more with Teddy in that same part of the book).

We learn that Thomas becomes a bit confused and pulled in different directions due to those with social and economic power (including the medical field). It was really well written to see the pain he was going through and how he was wearing down a bit.

I loved learning about all the characters. At first there were a bit too many for me to follow, but it got a bit easier to know who each person was.

Teddy has a bunch of jobs but she loves being a nurse. The problem is that she is not treated as well as she would like to be at her job. She has little power and needs the money. After a while, she becomes harassed. It weighs on her over time. Teddy clings to God to help her through, but it has been difficult.

Thomas makes friends and seems to have so much going on at once that it is hard for him to maintain them and even feel like he has control over his own life. He has not gone to God enough for help.

When the last portions of the books come around, there is a lot that seems to either be resolved or shaken up into a jar and tossed out quickly to resolve the things. I would have liked to have less of a climb in the beginning of the book and more of a working thing out more slowly towards the end so everything was more evenly balanced. The story is heartwarming and very touching, and I do like Heidi Gray McGill's writing. You can see how each character feels and I appreciate that so much.

Life should be greatly impacted by the way you view your faith in God. This story brings that to life in several ways that I enjoyed. The daily Bible entreaty was encouraging and brought home the fact that not being in God’s word daily can impact basic parts of life. The reliance on the Lord’s will and way in a believer’s life was strongly brought to view. I really liked that so many of the characters were solidly seeking to live the way God would want them to. This was highlighted by the characters that were not doing so. I liked this aspect of the story a lot because many times Christian fiction is a light-weight Christianity. This brought it strongly to the story.

Overall, this was an enjoyable story. I did not realize that it wasn’t the opening book to a series. I will likely look up the other stories to see how they relate to the characters of this book because there were definite overlap possibilities. I found the story sweet, though there were a couple of rough ideas implied. I liked that there was nothing blatantly ugly and detailed in the story, though it is clear that those people were there.

Life during the time following the Civil War was difficult and this story illustrates that well. I really enjoyed the characters of Douglass and his wife that brought Christian marriage to the front and center. They were probably my favorites in the story.

I don’t mind recommending this story for reading. Do pick up your Bible and check the doctrine of some of the characters because it does deviate from what the Bible as a whole teaches. But that doesn’t mean that most of the Christian living shown in this story is wrong – daily Bible reading and study, prayer, seeking God’s way, a loving kind marriage, seeking a Christian spouse, serving others, putting others before yourself – these are all right ways of living. And I really liked that these were front and center for most of the characters.

I really enjoyed reading this novel! There is a nice, calming pace to this story but there is an underlying sense of darkness versus light lurking beneath the surface, which is what initially lured me into this world.

Witnessing the faith of both Thomas and Teddy fleshed out is so refreshing to see. I love how it’s more than a religion to them but instead a relationship with their Savior. It’s such a beautiful picture and something I sadly find myself lacking in more times than not.

I also admired the workmanship. Teddy and Thomas are both such hard workers which is how a lot of people were after the Civil War. I appreciated gaining a glimpse of the struggles that many had during that time of picking up the pieces and I am in awe of the tenacity of this generation. The side characters were the perfect compliments and were some of my favorite parts of the story. The Douglass’s as well as the characters at the boarding house showed Thomas and Teddy so much love and support, giving what little they had to the young medical student and nurse, and being the picture of grace and hospitality when they needed it the most.

There is something very endearing about Healing of the Heart. It’s hard not to be charmed by two characters that are truly selfless and trying to follow God’s direction for their lives. Pair that with wonderful world building and strong writing and you’ve got a novel that will sweep you away with its heart and devotion.

Healing of the Heart is written by Heidi Gray McGill. This is book 4 in the Discerning God's Best series. I have not read the whole series, and I did not have any issues following along. In this story we are transported back to post Civil War Philadelphia. The author has written a captivating story

Theodora aka Teddy works two jobs to make ends meet. She is a server/waitress in a higher class establishment and a nurse at the hospital. While at the higher class establishment, she sees how catty and petty the higher class can be. She hears all sorts of gossip from society's most eligible ladies. Her work as a nurse is looked down upon. She has no desire to get married and wants to be able to survive on her own.

Thomas has come to Philadelphia from Missouri to finish studying to be a doctor. Some have questioned Thomas's decision to go so far from home, but he feels that God has brought him here for a reason. His benefactor, the local judge, helps bring esteem to his reputation. He befriends the judge's assistant who really helps him realize things about his faith.

The book is well written. The storyline draws you in within the first few pages. The author has done careful research and brought to light some post Civil War struggles that our characters may have faced. I love that the characters had to work through some things.

Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead PublicityTours. All thoughts are my own.

Heidi McGill hooks me again with her Healing of the Heart, the fourth in her 'Discerning God’s Best series.'

Reading this series is like interacting with and watching your wonderful neighbors grow up where you live. It’s that warm feeling you have when they have come back, only a little older. Or when one has a baby and you celebrate it, then see it pass through the toddler stage and suddenly they are in fifth grade! When I saw that Thomas, the main character, was going to be a doctor, I thought, he was always a sensitive soul and inquisitive. I remember when ….

The best thing about this book was seeing how Thomas picked up on various aspects of his friendships—things others might consider strange but which fascinated him. I liked the contrasting elements of his love interests. McGill, similar to her other novels, meshes faith and wisdom in the personalities of her characters.

Her protagonists and antagonists struggle and both have strengths and weaknesses, true-to-life. This shows the depth of character through the lens of worldview and can impact the actions of individuals and enable them to rationalize their behavior. I rated it 5 stars because of the warmth and intricacies of her while staying true to the post-Civil War era.

Even though I received a complimentary copy of this book for an honest read.
I chose to give it a review which was not required.
Highly recommend it!

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Writing Healing of the Heart was a journey of remembering what it feels like to be at a loss—and to see God’s gentle hand lead me back to Himself. Thomas wrestles with a sense of duty that keeps him from following God’s call, and that used to be me—afraid, hesitant, and convinced that delay was wisdom. But time and again, I’ve had to learn the hard way that delayed obedience can move us farther from healing instead of toward it.

I also wanted to shine a light on a history that isn’t often told—the experience of Native Americans in Missouri during the 1870s, carrying scars from prejudice and longing to belong. Including those voices shaped Thomas’s path and reminded me how necessary it is to carry compassion in our stories.

This story was born in a season when Psalm 43 resonated in my soul—that feeling of isolation around the holidays, the ache for something more. I wrote Healing of the Heart to stand in that ache with the reader and say: I see your loneliness, and God still sings over you.

At its core, this book is for anyone who wonders if God sees when the heart is hidden or in pain. My hope is that through Thomas and those who walk with him, you’ll feel seen, heard, and invited to lean into the healing only God can bring—without pretending you’ve got it all together.
