The story of the Scalera Mafia family continues in this, Book 2 of the Il Consiglio Scalera - A Mafia Dynasty series . The Don – Giuliano Scalera – is dead, and nobody mourns him, nobody at all. Certainly not his sons: brothers Matteo, Dominic, Stephano, Luca and Benedict; they all hated him to some degree. Matteo is now the Don. They’re still Mafia, but Matteo is not his father. In Hated Vows Tasha was to be auctioned off, but that didn’t happen, and her and Matteo’s HEA continues to unfold. Life is pretty good for them.
Until Gigi Trapani calls in a favor from Matteo, and things get very complicated and very dangerous very quickly. Gigi is Mafia, too. In Italy. Her father is also a Don. She played a part in ensuring Tasha was able to get off the auction block, and now Matteo owes her a debt. Remember this is the Mafia, and “I owe you one” is serious, always to be honored. Gigi knows this full well and when she finds herself and her younger sister in a life-or-death situation doesn’t hesitate to call in that marker and request protection.
Stephano and Gigi have a little bit of pleasant/unpleasant history. It was her family’s yacht Matteo and Stephanie were on while Stephano was setting up the auction in Italy. She was sent by her Don to welcome the Scaleras, knowing nothing about kidnapping, fake marriage, or auctions. When she assumed Tasha was in danger she stepped right in – like an irritating little dog that won’t let go of your pant leg. After the auction was stopped and Matteo and Tasha went happily on their merry way, Gigi and Stephano had a one-night stand. Wild chemistry and emotion but fraught with tension as well. Gigi made a remark to Stephano that cut to his core. Not her intention because she didn’t know anything about his background or history but it left a mark anyway. So what they had was more of a one-night standoff – unbelievable attraction but both leave never wanting to see the other again.
Don’t always get what we want, though, do we? Gigi is an independent businesswoman and has been plotting and saving for an escape from the Mafia for herself and her sister Carla, but she’s blindsided by her stepbrother into an arranged marriage for either of the sisters to the new cruel, sadistic Capo Crimini. To protect Carla, Gigi volunteers and is promptly marked, cut, tortured and locked up with Carla. They manage to escape and this is where the favor from the Scalera family in Boston comes in.
Imagine Stephano’s surprise, and reluctance, when his Don – yes, his Don, not his brother – instructs him to pick up the sisters at the airport. He can’t get her out of his mind, but that doesn’t mean he ever wants to cross paths with her again. She expects to see Matteo, but unfortunately Stephano is there. However, once again this is the Mafia, and the rules and codes and honor are not to be broken. Stephano realizes right away that Gigi is badly hurt and this is where things start to change.
Broken Vows takes place in much the same time frame as Hated Vows but from a different perspective. We start to see a much softer, more thoughtful, more caring Stephano, and to learn about his demons and the cruel treatment he received at the hand of his father. He was made to do things a young boy should never have to do and as a result is sure he’s pure evil, can never redeem himself and dare not fall in love because all he will do will cause hurt and pain. Gigi is bold and loud and intrusive, but she has a suitcase full of her own demons. And now the full force of the Capo Crimini after her. Broken Vows is a full, rich, ably plotted story full of so much happening. It’s exciting and heartwarming and scary. Tasha and Matteo settle into a warm relationship and he is putting his own signature on being Don Scalera. Gigi and Stephano circle around his other but he never wavers in his resolve to protect her and Carla. Carla is a young, spoiled Mafia princess who has no idea the havoc she is wreaking upon the family by not following the rules. Gigi wonders how their father could have let this happen – and if he is even still alive or has betrayed them. Through it all Stephano is at her side and their marriage of convenience starts to feel like the real thing; he’s the perfect fake husband. She wants to let her guard down but fear for herself and Carla is so real.
Author Sophia Karlson does an outstanding of showing the hard, violent, dangerous Mafia world where revenge and mistrust are always factors, and then flipping it and showing us “normal” people who live and love and feel insecure and delight in simple things like walks in the park and having ice cream. The story is non-stop excitement and suspense with lots of surprises and twists and turns and also full of heart-stopping, heartwarming, swoony, utterly romantic scenes, and some pretty steamy stuff to get your heart rate going. I love Mafia romance because it’s such a study in contrasts, I love HEAs, and I love this series. I thoroughly enjoyed Broken Vows, recommend it without hesitation, and can’t wait to see which brother provides the next enjoyable, satisfying read. Note: I was sent a free book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review. All opinions are my own.
