Nathan Hunt needs a girlfriend. Specifically a fake one. Yes, the shy, grumpy twin of Henry Cavill who sits at the end of my bar needs to convince his absurdly rich family that he’s actually capable of a normal social life. And he’s willing to pay a professional to fill that role. Who happens to be me.
It helps that I’m just desperate enough to need the cash and not ask any questions. I’m the obvious choice: Joni Zola, former dancer and forever flirt. Never too serious. Always a good time.
On its surface, the plan is simple. First, tell everyone we’re roommates. Then move on to lovers. His family will leave him alone, and I’ll have a free place to stay and a full bank account. Easy, right?
But as our scheme progresses, the lines blur. Soon casual PDA turns into sharing a bed at night. On the outside, Nathan Hunt is just my next boyfriend of the hour. But what if secretly, I might want him forever?
If we can keep things professional, this just might work. I can forget that kiss if he can.

When not writing, she is hanging out with her family, playing soccer with the rest of the thirty-plus crowd in Seattle, or going on dates with her husband. In her spare time, she likes to go running or practice the piano, but never seems to do either one of these things as much as she should.
I finished this but I will refrain from writing my review once it's okay to post one.
A few notes: - This book is needlessly long (almost 700 pages) - Too many elements were added throughout the book that were unnecessary - I expected and wanted a cute story with fake dating etc. but got a book filled with TW’s - The decision by the author at the end concerning a side character (that she already wrote a book for) was beyond insane.
I want to give this a 3 because I really did love Nathan and Joni's journey but there's too much that I can't look past.
Initially, I dnf'd this pretty quickly because Joni's immaturity and irresponsibility were very annoying at first. Instagram ads pulled me back, and I gave it another shot. Joni's behavior was slowly explained, and I began to understand and enjoy her more. I enjoyed that Joni and Nathan are neurodivergent. I liked that they developed a friendship before a romantic relationship. It was really sweet and didn't feel forced. I liked how Nathan's honesty taught Joni to be more honest with herself and recognize her value as a person, not just a body. Their support of each other was beautiful and I enjoyed watching them fall in love. It was so effortless and heartwarming.
Spoilers and rant below.
What drops this below a 3 is the lack of consequences for what Carrick pulled at the gala and everyone's reaction to it. Joni was a minor, drugged, r*ped, and filmed without consent. Carrick shared that video with his entire family. He distributed CP and that's fine? I was waiting for a fight, Nathan to completely cut ties, legal repercussions, anything to acknowledge the heinous behavior. Instead Carrick is basically the hero by the end. Nathan tells Joni that Shawn lied and exploited her, but it's really not talked about again. The Hunts still hold it against her even though she was a victim and they viewed CP. I feel there was a lack of support from her family after they learned what happened. Even Joni still kind of blames herself. The narrative surrounding that video and Shawn's abuse was harmful and wrong.
During the gala scene, Nathan's behavior was unacceptable. He stayed silent as the woman he loves was reduced to the dirt on his family's shoes and then walked away. I don't care if he was hurt by her keeping it from him. He allowed her to be humiliated, disrespected, and dehumanized in the worst way, but his pain was more important in that moment. Nah. And his explanation for leaving was bullshit. Joni should not have forgiven him so easily.
And Shawn. He felt like a caricature. Like the cartoon villain just waiting in the shadows. Had he been stalking Joni off the page? He shows up out of nowhere and then disappears until we need more conflict. There were hints throughout about how he'd make his final appearance, but there was so much going on that his plot line was forgotten background noise. His appearances and darkness compared to the rest of the plot felt out of place. I think there was enough conflict to be explored within the Hunt family and the Zola family. Shawn's plot line was gratuitously violent and monstrous.

I feel like this book really did have the potential to be great but it just wasn’t. I honestly picked up and put down his book about three times before I decided to just push through and finish it, and the only reason I had ultimately decided to finish it was because I wanted to see Nathan get his happily ever after.
In honor of Nathan I’m going to make a list for you.
Things I like about this book Nathan Hunt Isla
Things I didn’t like about this book
Literally everything else !!!!
I personally feel like the author of this book hated Joni.. I have never ever read an entire book where the main female character didn’t have one redeeming quality. Let’s see she didn’t have a life together, she couldn’t dance anymore, she was broke, and then on top of all of that she couldn’t read and spell.. like come on give her something other then being pretty. She didn’t even get what she wanted in the end.
I feel like the last 15% of this book was very unnecessary, I honestly want to know what was the reason?, and because of that I felt like the ending was a little underwhelming.
I'm having a hard time rating this book because I do think that this really managed to capture the fake dating trope really really well. But at the same time I found the FMC to be sooooo annoying in the first 20-30% of the book that I genuinely considered putting the book down. Which is so unusual for me because I have a high tolerance for crap writing. I have read an entire series despite the bad writing only cause the plot was somewhat good. So for me to even consider putting a book down is a big deal. Especially because usually the culprit of a "bad" book for me is the quality of the writing or the writing style and not that I just genuinely find a character annoying. So yeah, that's why this book gets 2 stars from me.
Wow, there are so many things I want to say about this book, all great of course! In honor of Nathan and Joni, I will list them down.
Things I love about this book:
• Joni and Nathan make such a beautiful couple. They understand each other. • Nathan is my new book boyfriend, sexy, handsome, sweet and caring. • Joni is fun, she cares about people hard, eventhough she was brought up in a hard way. • I love the Zola family, although I must admit I was not very happy with them in the beginning of the book. I felt they could've been more supportive towards Joni. At the end it all worked out for the best.
Details on the book:
• Very long book, but easy to read. • No cliffhanger • Be ready to feel all the emotions, ALL. (Anger, love, pain, you name it)
Without giving any spoilers, there was a moment at the end where I just had to stop what I was doing to cry a little.
Thank you Nicole French for giving us this story. I know I needed it ❤️.
I love me some neurodivergent characters and these were just lush. Some Pretty Woman parallels here that I was absolutely here for. Loved our down on her luck girl.
Boyfriend of the Hour by Nicole French is a Cinderella moment wrapped in some unique story telling and a beautifully diverse representation in term of mental health. Nathan and Joni's worlds are as different as they could be but when their paths collided, they realise slowly that they are actually made for each other. This is their journey with so many ups and downs.
Joni is the youngest Zola and she is a mess. Twisted her knee and lost the big chance at doing something great in the only thing she excels at. Dancing. Losing her place to live as her grandma is living for a trip to Italy. Bartending isn't bringing a lot of money. Enter Dr. Nathaniel Hunt. Grumpy surprise bar patron, the surgeon she accidentally went for breast augmentation consultation and now her new roommate. He is socially awkward and he convinces Joni that she can help him in exchange of the room. It snowballs to fake girlfriend to fake fiance to rich manipulative family to mafia danger....
I loved how Nathan and Joni both were on neurodivergent spectrum. Nathan being Social Pragmatism Disorder and Joni being undiagnosed ADHD and some level of learning disorder. As a Psychiatrist, I realised from first few chapters that Nathan must be in Autism spectrum and I loved how the author represented it. The socially awkward sides, cluelessness about Social cues, controlling perfectionist behaviors and being misinterpreted as emotionally unavailable..it all fits. He is actually very caring and feels deeper than more. He has been trying to evade and get free of his parents' clutches and Joni is probably the push he needs. He is an amazing hero who will win your heart despite his stoicism because he loves so intensely. Without any pretense.
Now Joni is a very conflicting character. I empathize with the complexity of her life. She is reckless and impulsive and restless. She hides her issues behind her over the top decision making. She loves deeply too. And more open than Nathan. She has been through hell and her loving family has no idea..and that's haunting her even now. Nathan made her feel enough. Wanted. Special. But at every step..The past is chasing her. She was the driving force behind Nathan's changes but it wasn't easy. She has been humiliated and hurt and embarrassed but Nathan was a shield and a healer. So many times. Two imperfect but beautiful souls found happily ever after.
Now I had few issues. I couldn't reconcile this version of Zola family with what I read from other siblings' stories. Her sisters came across almost hateful and resentful ..but that's not what Zola family stands for. I do understand the situation was desperate for Joni but she made some plain stupid decisions those put everyone at risk. Everyone. I do love her but omg she tested my patience and empathy so many times.
This is the first book I read by Nicole, and I instantly fell in love. I was drawn in towards the characters from the first page and lost myself in her writing. This read was an emotional rollercoaster, which left me emotionally drained by the end. It's a read that tugged at my heart strings.
Nathan and Joni might be completely opposite, yet they understand and fit each other like nobody else. It was too easy to fall in love with them both. I was swooning over Nathan from the first page. I loved how their relationship grew. Though there was attraction from the start, they gained each other's trust and fell in love.
Nathan is the perfect bookboyfriend. I was in awe with him and the way he was always there for Joni and supported her. The spice was off the charts, and their chemistry smoking hot. One of my favorite things about this book is that nobody's perfect, which is very realistic. I might not have liked all the choices Joni made, but that shaped her and helped her grow.
As I do not want to give any spoilers I would just say the things that happen in the last chapter left me heartbroken and I can say that was the only part I did not like about the whole read. I just couldn't control my tears and wished that didn't happen. Though I was happy, Nathan and Joni finally found each other.
I loved all the secondary characters, and I wish there is a book for them (that's remaining Zola and Hunt siblings). The way Nicole has written the book, it was very easy to connect with all the characters. I can't wait for what's to come next by the author as I am definitely in love with her writing and this incredible world she has created. Meanwhile, I am gonna dive back into the other books.
Please check the CW as some instances might be a trigger. Thanks to Nicole and Wildfire Marketing for the advanced copy of this captivating read.
I love Nathan. He is sweet and quirky and straightforward. He's brillant. He cares so much about the people he loves that he is easily manipulated by those around him. He is also protective. And it is clear from the beginning of the story that he cares about Joni. He just doesn't know how to express it.
Joni is underestimated by everyone around her. She believes that dancing is the only thing she is good at, but due to an injury professional dancing isn't possible for her any longer. In order to survive, she starts bartending and stripping. On the outside, she is a happy, flirtatious, flighty woman, but underneath, she is wounded and abused and beleives she isn't deserving of good things in her life.
I loved the interactions between the main characters and thought that they were made for each other. The book got a little dark for me and I started thinking to myself toward the end that it seemed a little far fetched. I could have believed Nathan's story and I could have believed Joni's story, but both of them together was too much. I also thought that the very ending of the book was rushed as the author tried to wrap everything up.
I'm glad I read the book but I don't think I will read any of the others in the series. I wish I could have given it 3.5 stars.
4.5 ⭐️s! Nicole French is a master of her craft. She excels in emotional, gritty, steamy romances with depth.
Boyfriend of the Hour is a standalone contemporary romance featuring two neurodivergent characters set mostly in NYC. We’ve got a little fake dating, one bed, & class difference. And while MMC Nathan is very different from my typical book boyfriend, he absolutely stole my heart. In Boyfriend of the Hour, we spend time with the wealthy elite, as well as the seedy underbelly of the city.
Strongly recommend this to romance readers who crave depth alongside their spice!!
An easy to read book with a great plot, a bit of smut but very believable! Really helped me to spend time reading instead of scrolling on my phone! I also identified with the main character Joni, her unidentified neurodiversity had really affected her life and how she viewed herself. It was heartwarming to read her meet a fellow neurodiverse person and connect. Would recommend it for people looking for a modern day love story!
Primary Tropes/Features: Fake relationship, Grumpy/Sunshine, Close proximity, Opposites attract, 1st & 3rd person POV,
Secondary Tropes/Features: Medical romance, Age gap (10 years), Touch her and die, Neurodiversity representation (Social pragmatic communication disorder, ADHD), Learning disability representation (Dyslexia)
Microtrope: Backwards baseball cap, Hero who blushes, Sapiosexuality
Safety warning/Triggers: Triggers cannot be avoided and include:
Nathan was initially depicted as an awkward and antisocial individual but as we learnt more about him we came to understand why he appeared that way and why he wasn’t that. He remained a little broody throughout but he was a genuinely thoughtful person whose short and to the point manner and inquisitive nature became endearing. I enjoyed learning more about him and seeing him interact with others in a way outside of his usual quiet directness and begin to stand up for himself the more time he spent with Giovanna. Giovanna (Joni) was the opposite to Nathan, socially intelligent and vivacious; her bright and bubbly personality made her a lively character whose personality jumped off the page. I loved how she made jokes when nervous and would say inappropriate things when uncomfortable and she was a character who I very quickly warmed to and it wasn’t long before I was rooting for her and Nathan as individuals and as a couple.
To sum them up, Giovanna was impulsive and a rash decision maker whilst Nathan was logical and over thought every decision. Their opposites attract nature remained present throughout the book and it created some humorous moments and interesting conversations but these two were more alike than originally thought. They’d both had to become someone they were not just to fit in and one of the best things about this book is the joy the reader gets from seeing them find someone they can be their true self with. After a couple of bumpy initial meetings Nathan and Joni fell into easy affection and familiarity which was enjoyable to see evolve as they grew closer. It resulted in some very cute moments such as him keeping lists of the things he’d learnt about her and their first hug. Their chemistry was natural and the sexual tension slowly building but ever present and it gave their romance a slow burn feel when it came to the two of them acting on it and it was another gratifying element to their relationship. The fake dating plot of their relationship development was fun, but it usually is when one character blurts it out without first discussing said fake dating with their supposed partner, and the mix of Joni and Nathan’s personalities and lifestyles made it more interesting. I also loved that the fake dating was being used as a learning opportunity for how to be sociable/ a good boyfriend. These scenes were enjoyable given the chemistry between Joni and Nathan and the way they thought about one another. It wasn't long before the lessons were no longer needed but I would have liked more of them.
The latter part of the book added some suspense and whilst I think it was as well developed as the fun romance part and it did tie in with the earlier established themes and potential triggers I did think it came a little out of left field considering the tone of most of the book. This was my first book by French so it may have been a one off or it may be very indicative of how she writes but I don’t think it worked all that well for me, at least one part in particular. It was rightfully so, a shocking development but without going into too much detail it kind of put me off reading the books about Joni’s siblings because it will just make them/one bittersweet. That being said Joni’s siblings and their partners made for interesting and likeable side characters who added to the plot.
Overall I found this to be a well written and paced book. It captured my attention and had elements to it that I wasn’t expecting including plot development and how the book was written. The mix of 1st and 3rd person narrative was surprising and took a little getting used to but it worked well. Considering how Nathan was characterised and his neurodiversity having a narrative which was more detached than what we had from Giovanna worked well and added an element to the storytelling that as a reader got you more in touch with what things were like for Nathan. That being said however, I would have loved something in first person POV from him so it was easier to connect with how he was feeling at the time. I think being in 1st person POV for him would have added something to the book that it felt like it was missing. Overall the depiction of social pragmatic communication disorder (SPCD) through Nathan and ADHD and dyslexia through Joni was another interesting and well written element to the story. Obviously it added to and at times was a big part of their characterisation but it added more to the book in terms of subplot revolving around acceptance and living with neurodiversity and learning disability, which made this more than a romance with some suspense.
This was an enjoyable book which I am glad to have picked up and read. I don’t know if I’ll come back to this universe of characters but I did enjoy my time with them.
Favourite Quote: “That’s the key to this apartment,” … “Take it. If I ever do a single thing to harm Joni in any way, you have my permission to come here and levy whatever punishment you think is necessary. I’ll be here waiting for it.”
‘He was kissing me like I was forever. Like he wanted to steal that forever for himself.’
‘When she woke, she’d looked up at him, her typically bright, if slightly sad, green eyes full of something sweet and light. Something like hope. Something so incredibly right. And he hadn’t been able to breathe.’
This book was so hard to put down. I could not get enough of Nathan and Joni. These two are complete opposites in so many ways but deep down inside they both have been misunderstood by everyone in their lives and they both see all of the other person. They also accept and learn to understand the other instead of putting them in a box like so many others had done to them. That sparks protective instincts Nathan and Joni have for each other and it was so heartwarming to see them take care of each other and just be there for the other person. They are such an unexpected couple and Joni even made a list of what a good boyfriend does for Nathan so he’d know how to fake a relationship. One of the many scenes that will make you melt.
But this is a Nicole French book so with that you are getting a sassy heroine. I absolutely love Joni, her quirky personality and how she keeps everyone on their toes. You’ll also get a very determined hero and Nathan is so open and accepting but also determined to do what he thinks is best. He also never stops fighting for those he loves.
This book is connected to others she has written. There are six Zola siblings and Joni is the fourth to be written about. You don’t have to read the others but they are interconnected series and the whole world she has written in the northeast is all interconnected also if you want to branch out further.

I wish this was paced better. This story sometime felt like it was dragging. And when it did it made the MFC come across as a whiny and stupid girl. When she’s not. She has had it a bit rough in her career seeing as she’s an injured dancer, but she does come across spoiled and as an underachiever compared to siblings. Nathan has SPCD and so this can sometimes be seen as having a miscommunication troupe but I wouldn’t say it was. I think that’s part of the story I could really get behind. I will say the spice was good when it happened. But as Nathan is brutal honest in certain respects it’s also really sexy. I also rate how neither really changes for each other but their good parts are really elevated.
I’m not sure if I will continue to read more from this family but I won’t re it out.
Main points are it’s a good read I just wish it was shorter.

2.6/5 This book is evil. I almost rage quit twice, but I HAD to finish it. The characters are decent The pacing is SLOW. It’s like a tv drama that I just couldn’t look away from. The male lead has a form of autism which makes him uniquely likable.
Stuff I didn’t like: - third act break up - spontaneous drug trip - THE PACING IS WAY TOO SLOW. - No final resolution with the parents -
Honestly this book was 200 pages too long. Loved the inclusion of neurodivergence and Nathan I would truly die for. Joni I felt like was too much of a hot mess; absolutely too many things going on with her at once. Also knocked off points for killing off a character who was the star of their own book previously - unforgivable.

At first, I couldn't believe people had rated this book over 4 stars. The MFC is truly annoying but the MMC is amazing. After finishing, I realize she needed to be that way in order to show her growth. It was a good story about 2 different neurodivergent people who learn about themselves and each other. I am not going to lie, some weird shit happens but overall it was a good, quick read.
I really liked this book. I will say the blurb about this book did it no justice to what the book was actually about though.
Joni and Nathan couldn't be more different or more similar. They were both neurodivergent. Nathan was an insanely smart surgeon but had zero people skills and Joni had felt stupid her whole life adhd and could barely read with dyslexia among other learning disabilities. But she always had dance.
She was a dancer in the broadway show Chicago before she blew out her knee and thought her dancing career was over. She grew up outside of nyc in a tough neighborhood the youngest of 5 siblings and involved with a gangster of sorts who groomed her as a young teenager. Gross. Struggling to get by, she's working at a club as a bartender debating becoming a stripper as she's running out of money, time, and a place to live as her grandmother who raised her and her siblings was moving back to Italy.
She meets an insanely hot man who sits at the bar but has zero personality. Since she's seriously considering becoming a stripper with her cousin, she thinks she needs boob job. Who's the surgeon. Que real life Mcdreamy - Nathan who refuses to do the surgery because he's like awkwardly into her but obv can't say anything because he's trying to be professional at work.
A real funny part of the beginning of their story was that after Nathan turns her away at her appointment she gets loaded and ends up going home with a random guy. When she's doing the walk of shame the next day she runs into Nathan in the lobby and it turns out she slept with HIS ROOM MATE. honestly she's mortified and done with this whole situation, but he finds her bra in his apartment and returns it.
Nathan had a whole ass weird back story too. He's the heir of one of the wealthiest families like. Ever. But he wants nothing to do with the family business because he's spent his life becoming a surgeon. It stemmed from an accident from a woman he knew from college who also happened to be a stripper coincidentally but she died and left behind an autistic daughter that Nathan took care of as his own. And by that I mean the court deemed him too young to take care of her so his insanely rich parents did put her in an assisted living facility.
The story really got a little crazy after this. Joni becomes Nathan's room mate after she's essentially homeless and he has an agreement with his parents to always have a roommate because of his social disorder but they end up hitting it off and getting together.
They plan on faking it to his parents so they get off his back and stop holding the girl over his head as a threat to move back to Virginia to take care of the family business.
Meanwhile - Joni's past catches up to her big time. Her gangster ex boyfriend has a sex tape of hers and Nathan's snakey brother finds it and exposes her to Nathan's parents at a fancy gala. It was a mess.
Joni ends up going to Paris to crash with her sister for 2 months who's doing a culinary residency. depressed that things are ruined with Nathan he finally finds her and shows up and they work it out.
You would think that's where the story ends but Nathan's parents have manipulated things with the girl enough that Nathan has to move to Virginia or else they are going to send the girl to NC in a conservatorship Brittney spears style. Joni leaves as a last ditch effort to try and use her connections to get the plan ruined but she's ABDUCTED and almost sold into sex trafficking with some extra tough dudes her ex boyrfeien was involved with. Nathan ends up saving the day and they actually kill the ex boyfriend.
Her brother in law ends up actually dying trying to get away with it was really sad. Ultimately the plan Joni put into place worked tho and they were able to get custody essentially of isla the girl and therapy for her adhd disabilities.
And they lived happily ever after. The story was so freaking cute I loved how they were both just weird and understood each other. Super unique and good read.

THIS ONE WAS SUCH A FREAKING ROLLERCOASTER RIDE that I don't even know where to start. Firstly, PICK THIS BOOK UP FOR THE MOST INCREDIBLE, DASHING & HOTTEST & SWEETEST HERO - NATHAN HUNT. That man has my whole heart and I can't deny I'm planning to somehow push Joni away, so I can have this man all myself. 🫣😍💋
Wow. Seriously I have to say, this book made me feel a spectrum of emotions and feelings as the story is written so beautifully - it's like smiling and laughter, then that pressure of not being the perfect sibling among your other perfect siblings, then there's finding kindness and love from a complete stranger then to darker turns and eventually some of the heartbreaking events leading us straight to once again sweet happiness.
Joni is struggling to find her a place to stay while also finding a proper job. She's the youngest of the family and hates how she's always been the so called flawed one.
An attempt to increase her prospects of a better job, after the mishap that happened to her and took her away from her real passion - dancing, Joni finds herself with an appointment at the plastic surgeon.
But never did she think that one visit was going to be the start of something huge for her - especially when she has no idea how amazing a person the good doctor beneath his socially awkward persona is.
It was difficult for me to empathize with Joni but honestly I was constantly on the fence with how I felt about her. It's understandable that's she young and does the mistakes that she does - but I also hated the fact that she could be so casual about her body and just in general about relationships but then something would come to light and my heart melted for the girl who just didn't know what was right because of how she just gravitated towards the wrong crowd because all she wanted was to feel loved and have a sense of belonging.
Also, those little lists Joni keeps on making and her teaching lessons to the shy doctor, had me smiling uncontrollably and felt were super adorable. Those lists just show that there's a simple Joni hidden inside all the outer layer of fuss and show off.
NATHAN HUNT, THOUGH GETS ALL MY KISSES. He's the most perfect book husband you could ask for and I don't give a damn about his inability to understand social cues and jokes - Give me a Nathan Hunt right now and I'm never letting that kind, caring gentleman (but a beast in *ahem*😉) ever letting go.
We have the usual wealthy parents drama but there also we come across Nathan's past and yet again he proves how amazing a human he is. Seriously, that man in every gesture, in his understanding for Joni even when he comes across one of the most dark secrets of Joni's past, in the way he cares and shows his love - keeps on showing how he's the man with a heart of gold.
I so didn't expect the dark turns that are sprinkled in this story and the action part towards the ending also were a surprise and kept me on the edge of my seat but I have to say I have also cried for some things that happened and didn't know what to think of it.
This one was such a complete package where I smiled and laughed with the quirky times, drama and unexpected turns but also seeing two flawed but absolutely sweet of heart characters get their happy together - made me burst with joy and happiness. What a ride. Loved this one and extra kisses for my Nathan baby. 💋💋💋💋💋

This is the first Nicole French book I’ve ever read. I did receive one of her books for free and haven’t read it yet. However, if this is my introduction to her work I’m a bit unsure but also intrigued as well. I was torn between giving this a 3 and a 4 throughout the story. In the beginning I was ok with it but leaning more on the negative side, but as the book went on, I started enjoying it more. It was hard to follow at first because Nicole has made the hero and heroine have disabilities. They weren’t able to see the bigger picture and struggled socially, though that was on Nathan while Joni carried herself with learning curves and only her looks to go by according to her. I applaud Nicole for writing a book with characters who deal with learning curves and have disabilities because this is more real instead of having this picture perfect couple who has no flaws or weaknesses. I can relate to both of them in that sense because I too struggle with a learning disability and social cues. It’s not as severe as Nathan’s or Joni’s but it’s still there and affects the way I interact, work and communicate. However, in the sense of following along, it was a different way to write romance. I did have a hard time understanding and getting into it because I’m so used to the hero and heroine knowing what they want, can have a conversation and understand emotions and how it affects them and other people. Joni and Nathan were learning together and it was brand new territory for him because he was dealing with emotions he hadn’t felt before and didn’t know how to act or react to them but at the same time he understood what lust and consent were. His attraction and connection to her caused him to dive head first into what this was between him and Joni, but only after she had to convince him she felt the same way. He couldn’t get a read on her so he wound up being jumpy, nervous and scared of her almost. He needed help reading people’s faces and what would be the proper thing to say. His reaction to Joni in the beginning had her getting all the wrong cues and becoming agitated and frustrated with him while Nathan had no idea how his words were affecting her. It was a complex book but with patience and reading it slowly, you can get into it and understand. This is what I felt throughout the book and because I didn’t have the patience in the beginning, I was becoming frustrated with the story and couldn’t get into it. I never fully got over it, but enough to enjoy the book for what it was. What I didn’t like, aside from that is the fact that Joni and Nathan’s families were horrible people and thought the best way to get a handle of them was through control. I had a hard time reading this. The lack of support they had for them was hard to fathom. I got angry about this because they didn’t want to give them the patience and love they both needed. They thought of them as problems to deal with when all they had to do was show support and understanding. Eventually Joni’s family became supportive but Nathan’s family stayed the same. I agree with past reviews too. The book was way too long, there were things that didn’t need to be in the book and things that went on for way too long. I also don’t like that the majority of the story was in Joni’s point of view. We all know how much I dislike one person point of views. When you combine all that, blended with what I actually liked, you get a 4 just from the complexity of the characters and creativity. I don’t know if I will read another of her books in this series but I guess we’ll see. I did read the excerpt at the end for Xavier and Frankie and I did tend to like it better, so we’ll see.
4.5stars-BOYFRIEND OF THE HOUR by Nicole French is a contemporary, adult, erotic, romance story line set in the author’s Belmont Billionaires world. This is thirty-four year old plastic surgeon Nathan Hunt, and twenty-four year old bartender/ dancer Giovanna ‘Joni’ Zola’s story line. BOYFRIEND OF THE HOUR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Several characters cross over from a number of the author’s interconnected story lines including THE ROSE GOLD series, THE SILVER SPOON series, and THIEF OF MY HEART, all focusing on Joni’s siblings.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from first person perspective (Joni), and third person (Nathan) BOYFRIEND OF THE HOUR follows several paths including the building relationship between our story line couple. Dr. Nathan Hunt is a plastic surgeon who struggles with his attraction to our story line heroine but all is not well in Nathan’s world, and our hero’s past is vying for control. Meanwhile Joni Zola is the proverbial ‘black sheep’ of the Zola family, a woman who just wants to be loved. Raised by her grandmother, and rebuffed by her siblings, Joni has been left floundering in the wake of her own emotional turmoil. Meeting Nathan Hunt pulls Joni into a world she knows nothing about when she becomes Nathan’s fake girlfriend, and the fall-out is about to send her life spiralling out of control.
The world and character building follow several complicated and idiosyncratic personality traits for both of our story line characters, traits that affect their lives, their emotions, and their concept of the world around them. The individual dysfunctionality and that of each family, has worked to form embittered, emotional and embattled individuals just looking for acceptance and love, but find nothing heartache and condemnation in return. As the story line progresses, we are witness to the fall-out of years of emotional abuse and control, such that the psychological ramifications have now become a permanent part of the individual psyche. Where one will act out, chasing the next proverbial high, the other is willing to remain hidden and secluded, away from anyone who will ever take notice.
The relationship between Nathan and Joni follows several stages from professional, to friendships, to necessity to fake to love. Nathan needs a plus-one, a fake girlfriend to keep his family at bay, and Joni has nothing but willing to accept Nathan’s help in return. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate.
There is a large ensemble cast of family, colorful and charismatic secondary and supporting characters many of whom we have met in the author’s previous interconnected series including Joni’s siblings. We are introduced to Joni’s ex Shawn, her boss Mike, as well as Ethan’s brothers Carrick and Spencer, and their parents Radford and Lillian Hunt. The requisite evil has many faces. Not everyone will survive.
BOYFRIEND OF THE HOUR is a detailed, complex and dramatic story of secrets and lies, power and control, dysfunctional family dynamics, acceptance and love. The premise is tragic and startling; the romance is subtle; the characters are different, desperate and dynamic.
I had never read a Nicole French book before reading Boyfriend of the Hour, so I wasn't sure what to expect other than a billionaire romance with fake dating and friends-to-lovers and slow-burn vibes that ends with an HEA (i.e., a rom-com), but even so, the book was a complete surprise because it's not your average rom-com. It is fun and funny and heartwarming and romantic and steamy, with realistic and relatable characters the author allows you the time to get to know well (which I love), but it's also heartbreaking and suspenseful and unafraid to address serious and worthwhile issues such as acceptance vs. nonacceptance, the consequences of (educational) negligence, emotional (parental) manipulation, neurodivergence, and sexual harassment and assault. To be fair, I don't think every reader will like reading about these issues in their otherwise lighthearted rom-com, but I think they ground the book in reality, bring attention to the everyday challenges that we all face in different ways and to different degrees, and balance all the book's lighthearted incidents nicely.
In hindsight, I might have wanted to start with another of Nicole's books to meet the other characters in this world (i.e., the Zola family) first, but I don't regret starting with Giovanna "Joni" Zola and Nathaniel "Nathan" Hunt's story because it resonated with me and I loved reading it. While I'm an only child who lives at home with a close, welcoming family and is neither a gorgeous, outgoing bartender/dancer nor a handsome, diffident doctor and not neurodivergent, I saw myself in both Joni and Nathan because some behaviors and emotions are universal. When Joni felt that she wasn't good enough or didn't deserve what she wanted, I felt that with her and cried. When Nathan knew that someone was misunderstanding, manipulating, or making fun of him, I knew how he felt and was heartbroken. However, when Joni and Nathan made the effort to really get to know each other and realized that they were at least good friends, if not more, I felt their disbelief, surprise, tentative happiness, and relief and was ecstatic for them.
Though complete opposites, and despite their initial problems, Joni and Nathan come to understand, accept, and choose each other, demonstrating what real love looks like. Boyfriend of the Hour is not your average rom-com because it's so much more. It's an inspiring book about accepting, being kind to, and believing in yourself even if no one else does. It's about going after what you want no matter what it is even if no one thinks you deserve it. It's about having the resilience to keep going even when life seems cruel and unbearable. It's about choosing people who choose you back. It's about making a fulfilling life for yourself even if it's not the life you thought you'd have. It's about doing your best and knowing that it's enough.
I went into reading this book thinking it would be another cute and entertaining but ultimately forgettable romantic comedy, and I'm so glad I was wrong. Nicole French is a remarkable writer, and if her other books are anything like Boyfriend of the Hour, I look forward to reading them all.
Unusual and wonderful story of opposites attract/ friends to lovers/ roommates/ fake dating/ rich man poor woman/ danger suspense!
It took me about 10-15 chapters to get into this story, but once I did, it became magic!
At first, the MFC comes across as immature, flighty, flakey, the queen of bad choices. When she meets the MMC (a customer where she bartends), she doesn't understand his stoic, off-putting questions. She becomes hostile and self-defensive. It's only with his persistence that they begin to communicate, and he tells her he has difficulty processing other people's emotions and social situations. They form a strange kind of friendship.
She is the baby sister of the Zola family, whose siblings are main characters in other N French books. As the baby, she was often spoiled and dismissed. She struggled in school, she sought attention at a young age from an older man (yes, grooming) who became her sorta boyfriend and often times a threat. Her passion is dancing, but a knee injury and poor surgery (and lack of funds) ends her dream and the only profession she loved and excelled. Now she's working desperate jobs like bartending (she can't mix drinks because she can't remember recipes) and shady stripper joints, and worse, "private parties." She hates it, but she doesn't know how else to make money. Her family has thrown her out of their childhood home because their Nonna is moving to Italy. Her family loves her, but often demeans her inability to hold a job and gets disgusted by the jobs she actually has.
Then she meets Dr Hunt.
That's when the story truly starts.

Joni really is a mess, sorry, but I'm also 24 and, for God's sake, she's only made bad decisions, which, discreetly, makes me believe she doesn't deserve Nathan, sorry not sorry.
I found Joni very immature, childish and a little stupid for someone aged 24 – I felt offended, ha ha ha, since I’m 24 – and there were times, aka most of the book, when I wanted to strangle her 🙃 It's not about being a slut or not, but about self-respect and valuing yourself, something that Joni didn't have. I don't think it's respectful for ANY human being to have multiple one-night stands and boyfriends who don't value themselves, whether male or female, and then she didn't realise how bad her decisions were and that she should understand that she couldn't blame anyone but herself — except in Shawn's case when she was younger — which she didn't do. She would wallow in self-pity, and once again Nathan would help her when in fact he should have made her see that what was happening around her was the result of her choices.
I expected a little more character development from Joni, but that didn't happen, and that was the most disappointing part of the book. Nathan was perfect, I loved him.
I know it's a romance novel and that 'everything' is fantasy, but I wouldn't want my man to go to a strip club and rub himself against other women, so I don't know why Nathan would tolerate that. It has nothing to do with maturity, it has everything to do with respect for your partner, but anyway... She didn't want Nathan's money because she didn't want to 'take advantage' of him, but then she did lap dances for other men???? Make it make sense.
I have the biggest ick with childish people😅 but anyway—I absolutely loved Nathan, and he deserves the world💙 I also liked that the author didn't stray too far from the other characters, focusing only on the main couple, which ensured plenty of domestic scenes❤️ She could have shortened the introduction to Joni's whole life a little (because 20% of the book was just this "introduction" and honestly could have been less😅) My heart goes out to Leah, of course, she didn't deserve that ending 🥲 It's my first book by this author and I loved her writing style and the book in general... I hope I like her other books and that they have more mature MFCs ahahaha
But I really really liked Nicole French's writing❤️because she captured me the whole freaking book even though it was a little out of my comfort zone
P.S: this book took me almost a year to finish since I’ve putted on a hiatus multiple times because in the beginning it was really really slow and I’m a fast reader and I live big books, so this is a heads up if you’re in a slump.😉
This is the story of Nathan Hunt and Joni aka Giovanna Zola the baby of the Zola siblings. This is the story of opposites attracting. Nathan is the son of wealthy Investor Radford Hunt and his wife Lillian. Joni is the baby sister of the Zola clan. As this is opening, we find that they siblings are packing up Nonna's house is a central point because she is moving to Italy to be with her sisters after raising all her grandchildren. Her husband passed away just before Lea graduated and married Matthew. Joni and Nathan's raw, honest emotions will make your heart flutter, and the trials they face with their families trying to control their lives are heartbreaking yet sometimes understandable. Despite being opposites, Nathan and Joni fit perfectly together. I love the raw honesty between them, how Joni accepts Nathan as he is. Their mutual support from the beginning is truly heartwarming. As the youngest of the Zola siblings, Giovanna “Joni” Zola is a twenty-four-year-old struggling with adulthood. Not only is she between jobs, but she is also running out of time to find a place to live after living with her grandmother for most of her life. As the heir to the Huntwell Corporation, Nathaniel “Nathan” Hunt has many responsibilities regarding his family. He is expected to step up as the next in line to the massive empire, despite moving away to start his own career as a plastic surgeon. A significant event in his life led him to diverge from following in his father’s footsteps and choose to become a plastic surgeon instead. I was laughing, then crying and so many other emotions that I couldn't stop reading this book! Joni and Nathan are a remarkable couple, and I wanted their story to not stop! Can't wait for Marie's story. I also loved the way that Nicole explained the SPCD, Social Pragmatic Disorder which Nathan apparently suffered from. The author did a wonderful job of creating two characters who are neurodivergent and who fall in love with one another while working together to deal with a society that fails to recognize their value simply because they aren't like everyone else. Joni has difficulty concentrating on anything and Nathan has difficulties interpreting social cues and providing appropriate responses. Great book it will make you cry at the end because of the events that happen.
