• What I am reading right now is 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡'𝐬 "𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐒 𝐊𝐇𝐀𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐆𝐀 𝐘𝐀 𝐋𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐆𝐀?" The title sounds different, does not it? It sounds just like the content of this book! Exactly! Nevertheless, I felt a wholesome journey after finishing this book. Furthermore, you will be astounded by how well this book fits into readers' minds. 🥂
• I believe this book should be read by all young readers. 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲, a young boy and his decisions. Most of the time, we regret the choices we have made in the past. And that is how Sunny's life is. A choice that could lead you down the road. I like how the author introduces 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 gradually while making it a topic of great discussion. 🌻
• Sunny's character is well appreciated. He reminds me in some way of 𝐈𝐦𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐢. I'm sorry if I'm wrong. We will understand how gambling can become a business, and this book does a good job of explaining 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞. It has recently come to my attention that the author also attempted to 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐛 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐓𝐮𝐛𝐞. This is special, in my opinion, because no one has ever created anything similar.🌷
• 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲 are very cute, and it is great that they arrived on time. This is the first time I have read about a book that features cricket as a game! Who is not a fan of this sport? You can actually read the entire book at once because Sunny played his own game in the readers' minds between the suspense of the sport and the main plot.💡
• The characters have a lot of "know me more" traits and are well-developed. The narration flows well and is concise. In actuality, this is captivating and interesting. I adore how authentically the book depicts the character's journey ownership.🍷
• Through this book, author Anish actually outlined what wholeness can look like. You will appreciate the high-risk drama that Sunny has to tell us in a straightforward and encouraging manner.🧋

"The Game Of Choices: Khaayega Ya Lagayega "by Anish Kumar is a thrilling journey into the world of cricket and underground betting. Set during the iconic 2007-2011 World Cup era, it follows a young protege as he navigates risky choices in the secretive betting business. What makes this book stand out is its experiential storytelling, combining a gripping narrative with a music album and an animated web series, available on YouTube. It’s a fresh, immersive read that blends sports nostalgia with suspense and high stakes.
Only Book - ★★★★☆ Book with music with web series - ★★☆☆☆ Overall rating - ★★★☆☆
"The Game of Choices" by Anish is a rather ambitious attempt to combine the childhood cricket nostalgia with the world of betting along with the innovative mutltimedia experience. Unfortunately, despite its ambitious concept, the concept is ultimately falls short in delivering a cohesive and satisfying narrative. Considering only about the book, you can enjoy the read experience something new and different with collective cricket nostalgia. But don't follow those traps like "listen to bookie theme" before reading chapter 3" it will surely ruin your reading flow.
The story is located between the two major triumphs of India in T20 World Cup in 2007 and World Cup in 2011, which makes curiosity about the book even greater as the reader will also go far behind the curtain of cricket betting in India. This initial promise of the book with the character development is nostalgia and filled with emotional depth. The protagonist, Sunny, is portrayed as a young man navigating a morally grey world along with his internal struggles and motivations feel connected and real. But secondary(supporting) characters, like Sanjana, are not multi-dimensional and lack of complexity to make readers think about their fates, resulting in a cast of characters that seem more like plot devices than fully fleshed-out individuals.
Sunny's journey through the dark world of bookies feels the adrenaline rush, with each major choice he faces coming off as a moment of genuine conflict. The story filled with moments of tension to evoke real emotional engagement because the stakes feel high enough. The author's attempt to humanize the betting world by drawing parallels to the choices we make in life falls flat due to this lack of depth.
The writing style of the book is just fascinating. It is deliberate and polished in portraying the Chaos and twists for the protagonist as a reflection of the complex, high-stakes world that the book inhabits. For a story that hinges on suspense, tension, and moral ambiguity, the writing does a great work for the gripping atmosphere.
The pacing of the book is just perfect. It takes the viewer through various phases in Sunny’s life with concern for dramatic rise with ancillary plots. The research is evident; his understanding of the betting world does not only consider the aesthetics and motivations of the craft but also profundity of trust, deception, success and failure as part of the clandestine economy of betting.
While the idea of pairing a novel with an animated web series and music album sounds innovative, in practice, it feels like a gimmick rather than an enhancement. The multimedia aspects are not seamlessly integrated into the reading experience and often break the narrative’s rhythm. Instead of adding depth or emotional resonance, the web series and music feel more like distractions — side projects that dilute the core of the book. For readers who enjoy immersive storytelling, this experiment may come across as disjointed and forced. Many readers will likely prefer a well-crafted, standalone novel over a fragmented multimedia experience.
The "experiential reading" concept could have been groundbreaking if executed thoughtfully. Unfortunately, it does not add enough value to justify its presence. Instead, it detracts from the storytelling by making the experience feel fractured, as though the author couldn’t decide whether to focus on the written word, the web series, or the music.
The book’s exploration of the morality of betting, the impact of greed, and the fragility of trust raises important questions about the human condition. He doesn’t shy away from showing the darker side of the betting world, but he also highlights the humanity within it—showing that even in a world ruled by money and risk, relationships and personal values still matter.
In conclusion, it’s a multi-layered experience that explores life, choices, and the hidden worlds that operate behind the scenes. But, the ambitious project fails to deliver on its promises. While the concept of blending cricket, betting, and multimedia is interesting, the execution falls flat, resulting in a package that feels more like a missed opportunity than a compelling thriller. The multimedia experiment, while unique, ultimately detracts from the book rather than enhancing it, making it hard connect with the book.
Whether you’re a cricket enthusiast, a fan of thrillers, or someone who loves cricket based storytelling, this book offers something unique. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fresh and thoughtful take on the intersection of sports, life, and decisions. But considering the multimedia accept, Skip this one unless you’re particularly drawn to experimental reading formats, but even then, be prepared for a frustrating and fragmented experience.
The Game of Choices: Khaayega Ya Lagayega? by Anish Kumar offers a gripping dive into the underworld of cricket betting, a topic that adds an edge of intrigue to the sport we all love. The moment I picked it up, I was reminded of the rush and emotional highs we experienced during India’s World Cup victories, but the book brings in a shadowy world that many of us rarely acknowledge.
Set against the backdrop of two of India’s most iconic cricketing moments—the 2007 T20 World Cup win and the 2011 World Cup victory—the story revolves around Sunny, a young, impressionable boy. His fascination with cricket leads him down a dangerous path of betting, and from the very first chapter, you know Sunny’s world will never be the same. It’s a cautionary tale of how one’s passion can sometimes blur the lines of right and wrong.
Anish Kumar’s narrative technique is engaging, keeping you hooked with its fast-paced action and underlying emotional depth. His language is simple, yet each sentence packs a punch. He vividly paints scenes that pull you into Sunny’s world, whether it’s the tension of a crucial cricket match or the high-stakes drama of betting.
Sunny’s journey is compelling, largely because he’s such a relatable character. His innocence, desire for success, and eventual moral dilemmas are written in a way that makes you empathize with him. You can’t help but feel torn—rooting for his success but fearing the choices he makes along the way. He’s the kind of character who lingers in your mind long after the book ends.
One of the book’s strengths is the emotional tension that runs throughout the plot. Sunny’s growing involvement in betting begins to fracture his relationships with family and friends. The way Anish portrays this inner conflict is masterful, reflecting the delicate balance between ambition and the cost it extracts from one's personal life.
Another layer of the story is Sunny’s relationship with Sanjana, his childhood friend. The bond they share adds emotional weight to the story, grounding it in real human experiences. Sanjana serves as a moral compass for Sunny, her character reminding us of the importance of genuine connections amidst chaos. Their dynamic is not just a subplot but a powerful element that deepens the narrative.
One of the unique aspects of this book is the multi-sensory storytelling approach. Anish Kumar encourages readers to enhance their experience by listening to a specially curated music album available on Spotify and checking out the animated series on YouTube. This integration of different media adds a fresh, immersive dimension to the reading experience.
At its core, The Game of Choices isn’t just a thriller; it’s a story about the consequences of decisions. Anish explores themes like greed, loyalty, trust, and betrayal with nuance, making the reader reflect on their own life choices. The theme of consequences is particularly powerful, showing how one seemingly minor choice can snowball into life-changing events.
The cricket betting world depicted in the book is eye-opening. It sheds light on how the sport, which millions enjoy with passion, can become a tool for darker, more sinister activities. Anish skillfully brings out the contrast between the joy of the game and the dangers lurking beneath its surface, giving readers a perspective they might not have considered before.
What I truly appreciated about the book is how Anish Kumar doesn’t just leave readers with suspense and drama but also with life lessons. The message that every decision has consequences, and the lines between right and wrong are often blurred, resonated deeply with me. It’s the kind of book that makes you pause and reflect on your own life choices.
The Game of Choices is not just a cricket thriller; it’s a story about life and the tough calls we all have to make. With well-developed characters, emotional depth, and a fast-paced plot, Anish Kumar has delivered a book that entertains while making you think. Whether you’re a cricket fan or not, this book has something for everyone.

"We don't get what we deserve. We get what we choose."
Blockbuster but with high attention to the details.
I got to know about this book by my friend and my ex-colleague Anish Kumar because he posted it on LinkedIn. Rolling my eyes. Then I bought it and it has been on my TBR pile for more than a month. Finally, I picked it up yesterday and finished the book in two sittings.
Entertaining plot and prose: Considering my opinion of the author being funny personally, I had never expected the plot to be so much engaging till the end. I have liked all the characters especially the minor characters where I used to look forward to their scenes. Moreover, I enjoyed the banter between the bookies. Although, I didn't enjoy the romantic angle but at least I didn't cringe during the interaction scenes. They felt natural and not forced. Additionally, I liked the prose. It didn't feel too heavy or too bland for me. It was perfectly smooth.
"That's the thing with faith. It takes a moment to lose faith but countless repeated efforts to win it back."
High Attention to the details: This was not surprising for me because of my bias towards the author. Anish had covered the complete bookie syndicate racquet in detail. Khana and lagana was interesting. What was surprising for me was the way he detailed some of the non-World Cup cricket matches and where I never felt something was fishy. He picked up some of the most interesting and fluctuating and some mundane games too.
Bonus Sound Tracks: This was another surprise where I have seen for the first time when there are soundtracks for specific moments in the book. You can listen to those three tracks on the popular music streaming platforms. My favorite track was the theme music of the trailer.
I am looking forward to any publisher picking this up in future. For me, it was an entertaining blockbuster!
The Game of Choices tells the story of Sunny, a regular college teacher whose life takes a sharp turn in January 2008. A big money problem in an illegal loan business pushes its leader, Devendra Ghoda (Ghoda Ji), to look for a tech solution. That’s when Sunny meets his old college friend Anil, now working in cricket betting, who asks him to build a custom software to handle their shady transactions. Sunny doesn’t agree right away, but the need to care for his sick mother and escape his boring, low-paying life convinces him to take the job.
Over the next two months, Sunny builds a detailed system to replace handwritten ledgers and make the betting business faster and more organised. As he gets involved, he learns how the trade works different kinds of bets, minimum stakes of ₹10,000, secret commentary lines giving a 9-second advantage, and hawala money transfers between cities. He also sees how Ghoda Ji and a hidden “super boss” named Nikhil manipulate odds using UK betting syndicates, making sure they always make a profit no matter the outcome.
Sunny soon starts handling clients of his own, like Ravi, a struggling college staff member who falls into deep debt, and Ashutosh Sinha, a rich, arrogant gambler with political connections. These relationships drag Sunny further into the dangerous side of the business. Trouble grows when Anil makes a costly mistake involving a huge sum of money, showing just how unforgiving this world can be. Each wrong step brings more risk, and Sunny begins to see how quickly loyalty and trust can disappear when money is on the line.
The story digs into themes of choices, consequences, ambition, and how money can change people. Ghoda Ji himself admits that “Good Karma done at the wrong time or to the wrong people is not less than Bad Karma,” and compares the betting world to a jungle where survival depends on being smart and ruthless. The book leaves you thinking about how our own decisions big or small shape our lives, and how in a world like this, what you choose often matters more than what you deserve.

This was such a fresh story to read. Though it is a fiction that revolves around the world of cricket and the presence of mischief conducted by business-minded cheaters like betting syndicates and bookmakers, it imparts some life lessons. There are many different characters with complex personalities, and their backgrounds and stories go on in pipeline. The timelines jump between 2007, 2008, and 2011, but the language is kept lucid and the twists are easy to grasp with a middle-paced plot.
Due to our impulsive nature, sometimes we take hasty actions resulting in long-term damages. The author shares through the plot that we are the products of our choices. Each choice made not only affects us but also many close and far as we are all linked in some way. The Almighty has plans for each one of us, but in the illusion of the materialistic world where greed and lust exist, we forget the real essence of the non-materialistic things that bring real meaning to our lives. Games are good and entertaining on the field only if they are played with good spirit, but cheating in sports or life ends in the damage of reputation, loss of valuables, and time. The story shares some insights into how the betting world runs, but nothing can be hidden from the eyes of the law. The author has tried to bring in a wholesome experience by creating something unique, including an animation series and some really cool songs that readers can find on Spotify, Amazon, and YouTube Music. All these make the read a beautiful experience. Check this book out if you are into sports; lovers of cricket will enjoy it. Moreover, as the story has sprinkles of philosophy in its core, it is going to be a meaningful read beyond entertainment.

Reading this book really was reliving my childhood-the cricketing memories that still give me goosebumps today. I can still hear Ravi Shastri's voice echoing in my head: "Dhoni finishes it off in style!" That night, April 2nd, 2011, was more than just an ordinary cricket match; an emotional night, a night when the entire country celebrated like never before. I remember my family screaming, friends running out onto the streets, fireworks lighting up the skies-it was magic.
But it's not just about that amazing moment. This is about someone who, though all set to celebrate, could not do so. It got me into a world that I never thought much about-the world of bookies, of choices that change lives, and there are risks that come with a price. The protagonist's journey is captivating, at times even exhilarating, as he weaves through trust, deceit, and ambition while navigating a business that flourishes in the shadows of the game we adore.

In India, cricket is not just a sport; it’s an religion. We don’t just love or follow our cricketers—we worship them (at least some of them). This intense admiration often leads people to place bets on players and teams. Over time, these bets have evolved into gambling, and today, there are hundreds of thousands of bookmakers who operate in secrecy. This story follows a young protégé who has learned the tricks of this shadowy business.
In this book, the author narrates a decade-old story of cricket and the illegal business surrounding it. Sunny, a teacher, is pulled into the betting world by his old friend Anil. Sunny, poor and struggling to support his family, is at a crossroads. Anil talks to him about making choices in life to fulfill one’s dreams, and these words motivate Sunny to enter the betting world. Although Sunny thinks he understands what he’s getting into, he’s yet to realize the fierce and unforgiving side of this so-called gentleman’s game. Grab the book to uncover the dark underbelly of this legal sport.
I’m not a cricket fan but interestingly I found this book to be a fascinating thriller. I enjoyed the author’s style in portraying the intersections of sport, life, desires, and decisions. Overall, the book was an engaging and enticing read.
