”Dai Frida.

”Io ho sempre dipinto la mia realtà me stessa

description

Cinque stelle splendenti :-)))

First of all, I'd like to say that I found the art style of this graphic novel absolutely gorgeous! It's probably one of my favourites.

Then, I found the idea of Frida looking back on her life and talking about it with Death extremely interesting! It gave a new dimension to Frida's life, and I think it's important to acknowledge how much she suffered throughout her life. This conversion with Death made the pain she experienced even more explicit.

I love how this graphic novel didn't shy away from Frida's sexuality. I'm used to people erasing her sexuality, erasing the fact that Frida was bisexual, but this gc didn't. THANK YOU FOR THAT.

Honestly I wouldn't recommend this gc as your first step into Frida's life because it's complex and relies on the fact that you already know about her life, so maybe pick this graphic novel once you've read maybe a small biography.

*Το βιβλίο κυκλοφορεί στα αγγλικά, μεταξύ άλλων, με τον τίτλο Frida, The story of her life, εκδ.Prestel Publishing

I bought this book after going to the V&A exhibition (Frida Kahlo: Making Herself Up). It tells the story of Frida's life in graphic format, and is told as a conversation between Death and Frida. The artwork is stunning and very arresting. Highly recommended to all Frida Kahlo fans.

I hadn’t known anything about Kahlo before and I still feel like I don’t understand why or how she is famous. This graphic novel biography walks us through some details of her life, mostly the many times she and her husband cheated on each other, (and I didn’t know about her medical issues), but it didn’t provide any explantions, insights, or emotions. We’re told that she painted and that she loved certain people at certain times, but it’s a lot of telling without showing. There were some elements that were enjoyable and thought-provoking, like some of her radical statements, but those were extremely few and far apart. I learned close to nothing about Mexico or about the time period she lived in. I didn’t think it was terrible, it was just missing too many important elements for me.

Throughout the graphic novel of Frida’s artwork being reflected through her life. The images speak stories and reflect her artistic style. The life of Frida Kahlo is from the perspective of death. The death and Frida speak together of all the milestones of Frida life and all of the details that mattered in her life and how the obstacles changed her life. “Pain, pleasure, and death are no more than a process for existence. The revolutionary struggle in this process is a doorway open to intelligence.” – Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo was dramatic and romantic, tragic and painful story. Which seems like "biography" that catches some tragic things that happened in her private life. Strong details that I would have thought of her. Amazingly how a person can be so famous and successful in their country and in other parts of the world. Frida really expresses her feelings of an independent woman who suffered at the beginning of being a famous artist in the world. It is sad to know how the last days of her life, she couldn’t really enjoy the people who supported her pieces of art that were her. Frida Kahlo to me is considered the greatest Mexico artist. She is still well know still this day. Well know for her self portations and her colorful painting of her personality. At the beginning of life she had health problems that affect in her oldest age. Her own personal problems were reflected in her painting as her face express her feelings. Many people see her has inspiration. She explained that she painted her reality. Her paintings translate her reality into a visual form.“Painting completed my life.” – Frida Kahlo Frida showed the world who she was and what she thought. She claimed her voice and used it on her own terms.

This graphic memoir of Frida Kahlo offers a particularly insightful look into life with chronic pain, and the transformative power of art. It’s very interestingly structured, both in its forgoing of traditional panels in favour of a freeform layout, and in its narrative framing, with the book presented as though a first-person discussion between Kahlo and Death. Having suffered many losses throughout her life, and flirted dangerously close to death many times herself, this has effective thematic resonance.

I appreciate that Vinci chose to present Kahlo as the complex being she was, rightfully celebrating her genius and magnetism, but refusing to shy away from her prejudices and infidelities. Vinci’s artwork is also perfectly suited to the task at hand, drawing clear inspiration from Kahlo’s work, and incorporating motifs that dominated her subject’s own style. It’s a great example of where the graphic memoir form can really enhance the material; the beautiful, vivid, sensual, and often surreal imagery adding an immersive quality while also paying additional homage to the life and work of a fascinating artist.

An illustrated biography of Frida Kahlo's life, told through an imagined conversation between Frida and Death. The illustrations were beautiful, full of colour and imagination and it was certainly a compelling story.

The only thing that made it a bit uncomfortable for me was the feeling that words were being put in Frida's mouth. There wasn't much information about the source material other than a reference to some original letters having been condensed. The blurb on the back of the book describes it as 'blending facts and history with dreamlike and surreal sequences', so it doesn't claim to be fully non-fiction, but I feel that it could have been made clearer, particularly in the context of Frida Kahlo being a bit zeitgeisty at the moment and very much in danger of being distorted into something she wasn't.

I still give it four stars because it's a beautiful book and if you take it for what it is - not fully fact or fiction - it's an enjoyable read.

I was only supposed to read 20 pages of this before I went to sleep... but I ended up reading the entire thing in 2 1/2 hours and I loved it so, so much. This is my first experience with a graphic novel and also a relatively new experience with Frida Kahlo's life story- I was only really familiar with some of the basics. This book, however, was chef's-kiss good; this concept of a discussion between Frida and Death was brilliantly done & the STUNNING artwork to match such an intense biography proved phenomenal. Highly recommend!

Before I start my review, I should point out that this graphic novel is *graphic* in that there are lots of nude drawings of Frida Kahlo and other women, in case that kind of thing might bother you. Of course, if you are familiar with Frida Kahlo's story and/or her artwork, that shouldn't surprise you.

Frida's story in this book is framed as an interview between death (portrayed several different ways in the book, depending on what or who is being discussed) and Frida. Death asks Frida to tell her story again, even though Death is already familiar with it. Thus, Frida starts from the beginning telling her story and the background of her parents, and goes through her whole life to her death, at which point Death describes her funeral service and beyond.

I liked the book. The only problem I had with it is that sometimes I couldn't figure out the order to read the conversation bubbles so that they made the most sense. I suppose that is the nature of graphic novels, though. I liked how representations of her paintings were incorporated into the descriptions of the corresponding events in her life. The illustrations are well-drawn, and reading this book reminded me of the movie Frida, which I'd like to watch again soon.

This book, Frida, is considered a graphic novel. The book was really not too exciting. There was no action. However, it focused a lot in Frida’s life. She had lots of lovers. One thing to know is that it contains a lot of sexuality. Most of the story does take place in Mexico.
First, the novel begins when Frida was born in 1907, in Coyoacan, Mexico. While growing up the Mexican Revolution was going on, so she experienced all of that. Her father was a photographer, which she was really inspired by him to become an artist and start painting. Frida like many children went to school, but she was more like a town boy. She acted different and had a different style, She would sometimes dress like a guy, and she let her mustache and unibrow grow. Frida also liked to watch Diego paint. She had feelings for both men and women.
Next, She was still young when her life changed drastically. She was in the city bus when a huge accident happened. Frida was badly hurt, almost about to die, but eventually she recovered in a few months. After the accident she would always get pains in her body. Diego and her kept on seeing each other and they soon fell in love and got married. It is very weird because Diego was doubled her age. Throughout the entire story Frida had 3 miscarriage, and she realized that she would never have children. Therefore, she was inspired to paint more. Her husband, Diego, also inspired her since he was a famous artist as well.
Additionally, Frida and Diego were moving back and forth between the U.S. and Mexico. Frida really did not like the US, but Diego did. They came to the US because Diego had been called to paint. Frida and Diego were always in a love hate relationship, because they would get mad at each other and later come back together. Diego would always have encounters with his female assistance, and Frida Knew, but she just let it slide. Soon afterwards Frida would also cheat on Diego many times. I just think this is really weird, since they still loved each other.
Finally, the Frida was painting more. Frida did many self portraits because she was the best person she knew. Sometimes she would give her portraits to people, especially those who were her lovers. Frida was loved by many at the end, but she really was not famous or rich when she was alive. Eventually she lost her mother and her father. Throughout the whole novel Frida was talking to the death, since many times the death was about to take her. Towards the end of the story, Frida got very ill and she was taken by the death, she died pretty young.
In conclusion, there is a lot of sexual graphics in the novel, which can get pretty weird. In my opinion the story is not really that interesting. It does not have any action or excitement to it. However, the graphic novel was not that long, since it contains a lot of pictures/graphics. While reading this novel made me feel kind of weird, and I was also pretty uninterested. Another thing is that the novel is very easy to understand. I would recommend the book to anyone who is interested in learning about Frida, or anyone who likes to learn about romance, love, and relationships.
