Chase Everything fell apart after my sister's second attack. My mental health got worse and my motivation to play hockey as a HU Devil disappeared. My heart felt like it was bleeding out, leaving a trail of blood behind me while I ran to get away. I felt nothing and nothing felt right. Except her. Sloane Higgins is my sister's best friend and my living-breathing dream girl. She's also off-limits in every way. So I keep my distance... until I can't.
Sloane I've been told who to be and how to act all my life. My path's been carved out of high society expectations, while my skin's been cut with my parent's disappointment, and sliced open in my own shame. Havenwood's been a fresh start for me to escape my roots while keeping my values. With my brother's arrival, I've got another reason to try to pull myself together. I'm used to being on stages and watched by audiences... and I love knowing that one of them is a handsome hockey player who just can't stay away. And I hope he never does.
This book delved deep into some hard hitting mental health issues, but man I saw myself in both of the main characters. I cannot say enough about Rose Cedar. Her story telling, the characters, the dialogues. I’ve got a new villain or two to add to my long list of get effed characters. This will definitely be a read again.
The slow burn hits hard in Chase and Sloane story but I also couldn’t put it down.
Chase portrays himself as a sweet Golden Retriever to the outside world but you quickly begin to understand the depth of Chase’s mental struggles as the story begins.
Chase is a Broken Boy that feels like he has no way to turn. With a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other fighting each other with no end in sight.
Little did Chase realize that Sloane has her own demons she needs to slay. They put their hearts on the line and begin to help each other heal in the most beautiful way.
The Found Family element woven throughout Chase and Sloane storyline is so pivotable to both their struggles and the additional POV’s added to the baseline of the story as it unfolded.
A little moment for Evie & Max -
“Baby, I already know their story, it’s the sequel to ours.” “What does that even mean, Max?” “It means, we fell in love first and now they are.” “You’re really romantic, you know that.”
Patiently now waiting for Hunter and Edison’s storyline!
Chase: A Devil and His Birdie (Book #2 of Havenwood Univesity) L: Rose Cedar Chase: A Devil and His Birdie is book two of the Havenwood University series by Rose Cedar. I do suggest you reading book one because this will contained spoilers and book one will have context needed for book two! If you think you're going to pick up Chase and be getting a cute hockey romance...you know, one with flirty banter, a little locker room talk, maybe a makeout session in the snow, think again. What you will get is an emotional support novel that will punch you in the feelings, hug you afterwards, and whisper, "shhh, I got you now". Chase is the broken man of your dreams— with all the emotional complexity, also carrying trauma, and somehow still makes you want to throw the book across the room and marry him. His healing and devotion to get Sloan is just chiefs kiss. Sloane? She's the emotionally intelligent siren and FMC we all thrive to be, who sings her way into his heart-and yours. Honestly, I'd let her ruin my life. Her growth throughout this book is everything. The romance? Slow-burn like a candle in a blizzard. The spice? Let's just say the thermostat is broken and I am sweating. The emotional depth? Deeper than my existential crisis at 2 a.m. from the meltdown I had from this 358 page poetic emotional rollercoaster. This book isn't just about falling in love. It's about healing, grief, mental health, and finding family in unexpected ways. It's a warm blanket, a soft cry, and a reminder that vulnerability is okay. This book will break you and then tuck you in with a warm glass of milk and a soft kiss. Final thoughts: Read Chase if you want a love story that actually means something. Just hydrate first....you'll need it for those tears.
Sloan and Chase completely stole my heart. I was so consumed with her pain, his obsession, and their chemistry and passion that I didn't even realize that they just reached out and tore it straight from my chest, but I don't even want it back!
This book... EVERYTHING about it was absolutely beautiful!!! Even the parts that were hard to read because they were so reliable, I felt like I was split open and then healed alongside of Chase and Sloane. For me that was what sucked me into this story and sold it. There are so many emotional aspects that I'm sure everyone has felt on some level at some point....self doubt, self blaming and loathing, self sacrificing, feeling undeserving of happiness. These emotions were so prominent and yet it was so clear as a reader how warped the characters self views were when looking in from the outside. Then seeing both characters lay their shit on the table with their friends, family, and each other- only to be loved through it!
This book is so much more than a love story between the two main characters, it's each of them learning to forgive and love themselves. The old saying "you can't love someone else until you love yourself" is Chase and Sloane in a nutshell.
Chase: A Devil & His Birdie by Rose Cedar is the second book in the Havenwood University. This book was just as amazing as the first book in this series. This group of characters have borrowed their way into my heart. I praying they each get their own books! They had me laughing, tearing up, and just in my feels. The found family in this book was so good! I am attached to these characters. The plot of this book was great and kept me interested the whole time. I literally could not put it down and read it in one sitting! I was hooked from the beginning.
I loved Sloane since she was introduced in Evie’s story (book 1) in this series. She was loyal, fierce, bubbly, and overall just an amazing friend. I was so excited for her and Chase’s story since their interactions in book 1. This book did not disappoint! Evie’s character is the embodiment of don’t judge a book by its cover. She hides her demons from the world. You would not have known what she was struggling with based on how she interacts to the people around her. Watching her get the help she needs and heal was great. Now to my baby Chase, Watching him struggling with depression in the beginning was heartbreaking. His self hatred was hard to read. I loved how his family and friends did not give up on him and forced him to get help. This book had a lot of healing, romance, suspense, and spice. I though the character development was great. The romance between Chase and Sloane had me swooning. I was fist bumping the air when Chase finally got his head out of his ass! I am so looking forward to the next book in this series!
This is book two of the Havenwood Devils series and is not a standalone. Please start with book one: Evie: Dimples & her Devil, which I have also read an reviewed. Tropes: MF, dual POV, sister's best friend, hockey player MMC, songbird FMC, insta-love, mental health rep, touch her and unalive, st@lk!ng from the heart, college romance, slow burn.
The character building in this story is phenomenal. Please understand that this is a hockey romance that has both MCs bringing mental health baggage to the table. It is a slow burn. In order to understand the depth of their love, you need to understand their characters. If you're looking for a soul-deep love that comes in fast and hard after the slow burn, you're in the right place. While the spice train doesn't board until at least 25% of the book, it is HOT, well-written, adn worth the wait.
Sloane (FMC) has been eyeing her best friend's twin brother since last semester. Now that they are back form break, she's hoping he will come out from the shadows that he's been lurking in and pin her to the wall. Stubbor man. Is she being foolish? Is she worthy of this love?
Chase (MMC) wants nothing more than to shake the angel and devil who are playing games with his conscience off his shoulders. He wants her. His sister's best friend. She's his dream girl. Shes the cure to the hole in his heart, if only he could dig his way out. Will he lose everything by self-sabotaging his hockey career? Can she save him from the depths of his dispair?
This slow burn, sisters best friend, hockey college romance book is pure perfection. Your heart will bleed for Chase and Sloane. He’s such a sad and broken boy, and the guilt he feels is crippling him in so many ways.
Sloane is just as broken but hides it from the world. When she sings her feelings, he finally opens his eyes. It’s heartbreaking and heart warming all at once.
@rosecedarwrites has done it again with this amazing story of pain, guilt, fear, anger and love. It draws you in, and allows you to feel every emotion along with the character, ripping out your heart before gently replacing it. The build up and tension is delicious, never frustrating, always just adding another dimension and layer to getting you inside the hearts and minds of Chase and Sloane.
It is written from multiple perspectives, which adds another amazing layer to the story. If you haven’t read the first book in the series, you need to do so before diving into this one. The strength and compassion Evie shows in this story truly show her growth. The rest of the cast of characters are back too, with all new villains to despise. Truly horrendous characters.
As with ‘Evie: Dimples and her Devil’, this book has trigger warnings so please read them before diving in.
Highly recommend reading this, and have your box of tissues at the ready.
If you know me at all you know I absolutely love Evie and Max’s book. This picks up after that..
Chase is insanely depressed and in a dark place. Sloane is his only bright light but yet he stays away from her because he thinks he’s not good enough among other reasons.
He feels horrible and responsible for everything that happened to his sister.
He literally doesn’t leave his room besides for hockey and it’s to the point that he isn’t even showering…. He runs to the point of his feet bleeding because it’s his way of clearing his head..
Sloane has feelings for him but she has her own issues to deal with including a horrible mother.
She has a way of dealing with her overstimulation that isn’t good.
Everyone around Chase can tell something is wrong and wants to help him…
It takes his coach telling him he has to go to therapy to stay on the team and a convo with his sister where he breaks down for something to click for him…
Sloane expresses her feelings for Chase when she sings a song and it doesn’t go the way she thought it would…
Things get interesting… He realizes he messed up but he’s not giving up, he wants his girl…
🏒 Hockey Romance 🫂Sister's Best Friend 🎤She sings her feelings 🩹 They heal each other 🖤Their love takes time 👀He slightly stalks her
MY POOR CHASE!! 💗 This poor man is battling so much in his head. He feels guilty for what happened to his sister twice now (read book one to find out what happened to his sister). He also feels like because of what happened he isn't good enough for his sister's best friend. He fights with himself to stay away from his little songbird to protect her. Well that is till Sloane sings her heart out just for him on stage. His siblings finally get him to open his eyes, and he fights to win Sloane back and be the hero she needs from her inner demons. Their bond and love are strong and inspiring.
I love how Rose writes and hits me right in the heart. I also love how this book is multi-pov and we get some chapters from other characters POVs. You will fall in love with all the main characters in this found family/friend group. Its not just the triplet's stories you want but all the side characters also.
Evie’s triplet brother Chase is struggling after some bad events (all detailed in Evie’s book) which are manifesting in him in some depressive and damaging ways.. all the while pining after Evie’s bestie Sloane (AKA red) and him feeling like he’s not deserving of her which is only adding to his depression. Sloane comes with overwhelming pressure and stress from her toxic parents while trying to keep it altogether and it affecting her health in some concerning ways.. while also pining for Chase and not understanding the barriers between them. Despite the fact that this one was a bit of a slow burn which I don’t normally enjoy a lot, however I really loved Chase and Sloanes story.
This book does have some trigger warnings which do include depression, self harm and abuse which some people may be sensitive to.
Chase and Sloane, we leave evie and now we’re onto Chase and her bestie. Chase and Sloane are both going through some trauma and Chase doesn’t think he’s worthy.
Sloane our southern belle is beautiful inside and out but when you have parents who only bash you your whole life you don’t think you are amazing. You tend to think you don’t deserve happiness because it’s thrown in your head that you’re no good. Her parents can eff all the way off.
This is a slow burn, and I loved how they came together. I love how Evie shows her strength for chase and Sloane. I hope everyone has an Evie in their life.
Davis I cannot wait for his book with his boo! Monroe lol he’s a goofball Jake oh jakey my heart right there Max well we all love max
Now Hunter and Edie will be FIRE!!
Can’t wait for more to come!
If you haven’t read evie this is not a standalone! It picks up where evie leaves off but you don’t really get the idea till you read her book.
Holy moley, the mental health representation in this book. I believe the representation is sooo good and that’s what what’s the book. You were constantly in the two main characters head and constantly seeing them stress just within themselves.
I do feel like the love story was rushed and everything for accepted too quickly. I feel like there could have been more in depth conversation about their mental health. And I understand all their friends wants to help them but it all just seems to easy.
The hidden story within the pages is crazy. Like the other dude was crazy and on drugs. Power hungry person just to lose it all.
If you want a book that will have you on the edge of your seat and leaving you in an emotional chokehold this is the book for you. Omg I have so many words for this, it is so well written and heartbreaking but don’t worry you will be ok in the end. You must read book 1 first as this is a direct continuation from there. This is sisters best friend, slow burn, love at first sight, mutual pining, ice hockey and a whole load of angst. Honestly I have never cried so much reading something in all my life. This is a must read for me and definitely one of my books of the year so far!
This book was so good. It was an emotional rollercoaster but oh how I loved Chase & Sloane so much. I love how each character shows so many different sides of heartache, emotions, healing, & over all mental health. Made me feel for them and relate in many ways. Definitely recommend.
4.5 stars. I was tearing up through the mentions of depression and I think it even touch a bit of PTSD. This book was intense and captivating at the same time. Love at first sight is that real? Idk but Chase thought so … he met his birdie.
