At the start of 2024, mysterious hardback books started being posted through the doors of random homes. Whilst the contents of the books remain a mystery there was one person who stepped forward and tried to explain the manuscripts were not of this world. They screamed and ranted that those who read them would be forever cursed for as long as they had left on this broken planet. The powers within the books using those who read them as their puppets to carry out acts of evil. Her wild claims were dismissed and, days later, she was found hanging from a branch within the deepest, darkest woods.
Just as investigations into the books were opened, all copies seemingly disappeared without a trace. The detectives involved with the case believed a cult to be involved, preying on those with weak minds although this was never confirmed. Whilst the case was never solved, it was never closed either.
Soon after the appearance of the third book, a terrorist attack wiped out half a city block and took the lives of thousands of commuters - along with causing a huge power surge which rippled through the rest of the town. The man responsible, according to the diary they found in his home, was apparently tired of the cruel world he lived in. No longer wanting to be a part of it, he wanted to take as many of the “bad people” with him. A belief that, in doing so, he’d be playing his role in making the world a better place.
It’s a new day.
The news is nothing but doom and gloom. The terrorist attack in the town, people killing and robbing each other in other cities, wars breaking out overseas and broken economies across the world - it was little wonder Sue needed medication to help with her low moods. Had it not been for the little white drug, prescribed by the doctors, she knew she’d have been “just another” statistic; a broken soul found on the bedroom floor in a puddle of her own vomit with traces of undigested tablets. And on days when she felt as though the pills weren’t quite enough? She liked nothing more than to lock herself away with her Kindle device. Except…
Sue was sitting in her living room with her Kindle in her lap. The tablet should have loaded up to the correct page of her current read and yet it hadn’t. Gone was the story she’d been enjoying for the last week. In its place, a demonic image with the words emblazoned on For Every 10 Pages You Read, Someone Will Die. Not wanting to leave a book unfinished, Sue hit the home button but the page didn’t change. Even resetting the device didn’t bring up her old book, or return her to the main screen showcasing her extensive library. The image remained. With little option, she scrolled forward.
A NOTE ABOUT THIS
As revealed in the synopsis above, before this book there are three books exclusive to hardback. These were only ever released via Matt Shaw’s store and will never be on Kindle. It is important to stress that you DO NOT have to have read these books to enjoy this story. Just as each of those hardback books are standalone tales, this is also its own story set within the same universe. For those who prefer a “complete” picture, there is a recap of the previous three books at the start of this title which comes with the option to skip.
Again, this is a standalone story. You do not need to have read the previous books.
MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.
Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.
Favourite books "Roald Dahl's Collection of Short Stories" Tim Burton's Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy Anything, really, written by himself. Because he is that good.
In 2024 strange hardbacks arrived in random homes, the person who tried to explain the books were cursed was found hanging from a tree. When the man who claims to have read the 3rd book caused a terrorist attack that wiped out thousands of commuters to rid the world of bad people, the police decide it was a cult preying on the weak.
As the world festers in doom Sue opens her kindle and finds a book she hasn’t purchased, unable to close it down she scrolls forward and starts reading.
If you’ve read the three unnamed books this will feel familiar and the artwork on the cover is the same stunning demonic imagery. A story of a family and bad decisions, compelling and addictive, this is the ultimate brain twister, excellent!
The imagery is stunning and I loved the premise, really original. The story was fast paced and definitely keeps you reading (even if you don’t want to!) All the way through you can feel a bit uncomfortable, and really absorbed in the concept. I loved it. I would have liked a little more detailing and word building, I would have cared more about the characters….and hopefully not too many more people would have died, right?
2.5⭐️ rounded up. Love the premise of this story. I feel like it really could’ve been crafted into more than a short story. I thought the title didn’t match the story like I thought it would, though. I wish I could say more, but I kinda can’t talk about it….
I absolutely love the concept behind this book. It asks of you the same as it asks of the lead character. Would you believe that people would die just because you read a book that tells you they will? You know you would. That's why you're reading this book now. Because you were curious. Immediately, this makes you very close to Ray. Matt Shaw has a way of character setting that is ingenious. I felt as if I knew each and every one after just a few lines. You are drawn in and you feel everything they feel. I cried. I actually cried. I'm a horror lover, not a romance reader, but I felt such a connection here that at the point where Ray has an impossible decision to make, I cried. Incredible writing. I might now have to downgrade other 5 stars reviews as the bar has been reset!
OMG, What A Story and what brilliant, creepy, artwork too! Became totally absorbed in it! Utterly horrible but utterly.good too!
Received a call this morning to say a friend is in hospital with Sun-stroke after the weather has been SO hot the past few days! Um, it is just a story, right?! .....
This was one of those stories where you think you have it figured out before you even start reading then you get to a certain point and think omg was I wrong! Awesome story as usual Matt shae!
I’ve only read a couple of books by Matt shaw and they have both been really good gripping stories you can’t put down it only took me a couple of hours to read those books as I couldn’t put it down 👍
Very good and short read, would have liked to have felt like I was also being taunted. I think you really could have taken this to the next level breaking the forth wall in some way. And with what I know from Matt Shaw I expected it to be a bit more hardcore.
You’re not supposed to discuss details, so I’ll just say that this was fine. I expected something different, and there are a couple of errors that really bugged me, but it was fine.
This book tugged on my heartstrings more than I thought it would. The writing was excellent, the stakes were heartbreaking, and overall it was an incredible read.
Another good read from Matt shaw , this book had me questioning my own kindle should I chuck it aside also because would something happen to me in 10 pages 😂 Great read just wished it was longer
Wow what a ride, this is one of those books you can’t stop turning the pages wanting to know what happens next. Only word to really sum it up is BRUTAL!!
I liked this one! It gotta little away from me when the dad left his family, but the ending was great! The book definitely did what it said it would do.
