Rate this book
A gruesome murder in charming Raven’s Edge sends Milla Graham sleuthing to catch a killer, win back her detective ex, and dig up a decades-old secret along the way...

When a shocking murder rocks the picture-perfect English village of Raven’s Edge, erstwhile amateur detective Milla Graham finds herself right at the centre of the mystery. Still reeling from her recent breakup with local police officer Ben Taylor, Milla sets her sights on solving the case, hoping to win Ben back.

But when the evidence begins to point to Milla’s old friend and former paramour Lorcan Black, she must choose between her loyalties to the past and the possibilities of the future. Meanwhile, Ben is on a different trail – he’s begun to suspect that the murderer could be someone from his own family's dark history.

Further complicating matters are Milla's meddling grandmother, Ben's no-nonsense police partner Harriet, and David the surprisingly young and sexy new vicar. With shocking twists around every cobblestone corner, the truth refuses to stay buried for long in this quaint village, whose picture-postcard façade hides decades of buried grudges, plots, and betrayal.

Will Milla solve the mystery in time to rescue her relationship with Ben? Can Ben face the skeletons in his family’s closet before one of his own relatives meets the same bloody end?

Most of my stories are set in small villages filled with quirky characters. These are partly inspired by the places I’ve lived in over the years, although the characters are straight out of my imagination! I currently live in Wales, close to a famous library and two ruined castles. My husband thinks we moved here by accident.

My first published novel was Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, which was a finalist in Poolbeg’s Write a Bestseller competition. As well as nine novels, I’ve written short stories for women’s magazines such as Take a Break and My Weekly. Before becoming a full-time writer, I worked as an administrative officer for the police.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy visiting big old houses, which I use as inspiration for the houses in my novels, and reading other people’s books when I ought to be writing my own…

When the body of a young woman was discovered beside a pond, minus her head, DI Ben Taylor was gobsmacked. It was the beginning of a case which was way too close to home for Ben. Milla Graham, Ben's recent girlfriend, was determined to solve the case herself as evidence was pointing to Lorcan Black, a good friend and one time boyfriend to Milla. Raven's Edge was filled with old houses and past secrets, and when a mysterious highwayman attacked Ben, wielding a sword, he knew there was something serious going on. But he, his partner Harriet and the rest of the team were coming up against brick walls. Would they discover the culprit before anyone else died?

Murder at Ravenswood House is the 2nd in An English Village Mystery series by Louise Marley and it was mostly enjoyable. Digging deeply into Ben's past - something he didn't want to do - meant everyone knew about his family and the dreadful circumstances from long ago. Milla is determined, impulsive and seemingly has no fear - until trouble comes knocking on her door. An intriguing mystery which I recommend.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

This book takes place not long after the events of Murder at Raven's Edge. It starts off with Milla having a late night meeting with her ex-boyfriend only to find that he's not there, but the evidence of a crime is.

Meanwhile, as things about Ben's past come to light, there seems to be an unsolved murder. Piece by piece, we learn about the role his family played in a robbery and kidnapping and how this sorted past is affecting everything currently taking place.

I enjoyed learning more about Ben's family and his past. The previous book focused on Milla's family, and it was nice having the focus on Ben this time around. The flashbacks to Ben and his cousins during their childhood and to his father and uncles as they committed a robbery and home invasion were both a terrific glimpse into Ben's family issues. You can clearly see how all of this is still affecting Ben's life now.

I absolutely recommend this book to readers looking for a good mystery series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Cozy, small town mystery with a great twist. Has a good bunch of well developed characters and a great story line.

I did find it dragging a bit through the middle and had to force myself to pay attention more than once, but very happy with how everything turned out.

We first met Milla Graham and DI Ben Taylor in Murder a Raven’s Edge and saw the beginnings of their rather complicated relationship. So we’re not surprised that at the beginning of Murder at Ravenswood House, Milla is meeting a friend/ex-boyfriend, rockstar Lorcan Black, in the evening at his house without letting Ben know. And when she runs into a problem, it’s not Ben she turns to but rather PI Kieran Drake to help clean up the mess. But when a woman’s headless body is found in the pond and Lorcan is discovered asleep on a crypt covered in blood, it will be tough to keep anything secret.

This time around Ben’s family and history are at the forefront. Ben has tried for years to distance himself from his rather notorious family, but this case is bringing them all back together. I love the characters, Ben, of course, is dealing with his own past while trying to figure out what’s going on in the village. Milla is awesome, if a liar and unreliable. I hope they get back together. Drake is morally gray but competent and surprising. The other villagers are a quirky bunch that add to the story. It’s Halloween time, which adds to the atmosphere.

Murder at Ravenswood House is an engrossing book. We’ve got several suspects and clues, but it makes several twists before we get to the (rather surprising) ending. I hope there will be more books in this series. I’d love to see what happens next for Milla and Ben and even Drake.

The second book in the series & I read it straight after finishing book one. I must admit I much preferred it to the first book too. In this book we learn more about Ben’s family & the events from fifteen years ago. As events unfold links are made to the robbery when Ben was fifteen. There are twists, turns & red herrings before things are gradually revealed & the ending is a surprise I wasn’t expecting. I warmed far more to the characters & feel the books would be best read in order. I look forward to more books in the series, to see how all the relationships both professional & personal develop

Thoroughly enjoyed the second book in the series - this time Ben is the one whose past (and dodgy family) is linked to the present-day murder. Loved the character of Lorcan (on the one hand, a Goth rock star; on the other, lonely and needy). Thoroughly interesting local history strand about highwaymen and witches; and there are lots and lots of twists and turns. As with the first book, as soon as you think you've worked it out, you realise you've fallen for a red herring. Cracking pace and a good read. Thank you to Louise and Storm for the Netgalley ARC.

After Milla Graham finally found the answers she desperately needed about her past, she and DI Ben Taylor became a couple. However, Milla had no intention of giving up her feisty and often irreverent nature. Inevitably, this played into her breakup with Ben.

When proof a new crime has taken place, one that appears to involve Ben’s past, a past that he would have much rather forgotten about, a determined Milla can’t help but to put on the hat of an amateur detective and try to solve the crime. This way she can help Ben in any way that she can. Hopefully, she can do enough that Ben and her can get back together.

While the previous book in this series focused on Milla and her past, this second book shed lights on Ben’s family and how he has become alienated from them and how some of those issues have still followed him.

Many thanks to Storm Publishing and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Another shocking murder happens in the village of Raven’s Edge (reminding me of Murder She Wrote – how many murders to little villages have?). Milla Graham is back as the town’s amateur detective trying to solve the case and possibly win back her policeman boyfriend, Ben. Evidence points to an old friend of Milla’s, a relative of Ben’s and possibly Milla’s own grandmother. Can she solve the case and win back Ben?
I enjoyed this book more than the first one since I knew a little bit more about the characters. It was another mystery for Ben and Milla to solve with help from other characters from the town. There were a few twists and turns in this one and a perfect surprise ending.
Will there be a third book – can’t wait to find out!

Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for an advance copy to review. This book follows on nicely from the first instalment, and once again is full of twists and turns. This one had a cracker of an ending, which turned everything around. I enjoyed the further activities of Milla, Ben and Harriet, and hope that the hinted at sequel does eventuate.

This is the 2nd book in the series. It's about family history and the village's dark past. It has well-developed characters and plot. It's a fast gripping read with a surprised ending. It has multiple POV's (Milla, Ben, Harriet and David) and flashbacks to 15 years ago and a robbery and murder that happened. Great twists, turns and red herrings kept me reading until the very end of the book. If you like crime thrillers with history of the past then you will love this book. I am now looking forward to the third book in the series.

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author, Storm Publishing and Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources blog tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

After the highly personal family mystery of Murder at Raven’s Edge, I really wondered where Louise Marley would take her characters next and was thrilled to find that there are still more dark secrets lurking in the past for Ben and Milla to face up to together… or separately.

The story again has a fairytale feel to it, despite being a cross between police procedural, PI and cosy crime in style, as mysterious highwaymen appear through the fog, a talking raven sweeps in and out and a body is found laid out on a tomb covered in blood not their own. There is definitely a spooky Halloween theme at work, and all may not be exactly as it seems.

Milla’s independent nature and tendency towards casually criminal behaviour gets her in trouble once again, as she tampers with evidence, hindering Ben’s investigation, jeopardising his career and their budding relationship. But she also added an important layer of excitement and unpredictability to the investigation which I appreciated as a reader, even if her fellow characters didn’t!

I really like this pairing, as their personalities are so different and complement each other nicely, while they have quite a lot in common in terms of family history and trauma – I would definitely read more from this series in future, whether they manage to resolve their romantic difficulties or not.

If you like your mystery stories modern but with a nod to the fantastical and are willing to suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the unfolding story then you should give this series a try. Preferably in order, as Milla’s family history and Ben’s recent career path affect your understanding of how they behave in this story, even if you don’t need them to follow the plot.

British Cozy-ish Mystery that finds a music journalist and her policeman boyfriend are at odds when her rock star ex is implicated in a gruesome crime connected to the village's dark past.

4/5 stars: This is the second entry in Marley's English Village Mystery series, which is a British Cozy-ish Mystery that features a music journalist who finds herself at odds with her policeman boyfriend after she makes a gruesome discovery at her her rock star ex's home and when he's found covered in blood she's on the case which is connected to the cop's notorious family history and the village's dark past. With plenty of twists and turns, Marley has crafted a mystery that balances the suspects, clues and red herrings and will leave you pondering the whodunit until the final reveal. Marley manages to mix the new murder investigation with solving a cold case effortlessly. I really liked the addition of the Gothic elements, Eddie the raven's awesome. Told in multiple POVs and utilizing flashbacks, Marley's writing and character work is great; the characters are well-rounded and complex while remaining incredibly likable. The main POVs are Milla and Ben, a local policeman, with additional POVs added in the present, Ben's co-worker Harriet, and in flashback to fill out the plot. Milla's used to handling things on her own and this causes her all kinds of troubles in this book. Sensitive topics are discussed, take care and check the CWs. While you could read this as a stand-alone, you'll gain so much more by reading the series from the beginning; so be sure to pick up book one, Murder at Raven's Edge

My Opinion

This is the second book in the series and I read both of them back to back. I would recommend reading the books in order so you don't get any spoilers. Once again Raven's Edge seems like such an inviting place with some now familiar characters. We are introduced to some additional characters throughout this investigation, but all of these are introduced carefully.

With many twists and turns this really was an enjoyable read. I really hope that in the future we will able to return to Raven's Edge - I just love the descriptions of this fairy tale village.

Milla Graham and DI Ben Taylor have been seeing each other for four months now. Prior to that she was involved with gothic singer Lorcan Black but he moved to France. Now he’s bought Ravenswood House and has invited Milla over one night. Unfortunately, when she gets there, all she finds is a head in a jar. Neglecting to mention this to Ben (he doesn’t even know Lorcan is her ex) and convinced of Lorcan’s innocence, she seeks help from Kieran Drake, the PI employed by her father in the previous story, who cleans the scene and removes the evidence. After all, he is being paid by someone else to protect the singer. The next morning a woman’s headless body is discovered at Meg’s Pond and Lorcan is found unconscious and covered in blood in the church. Ben, DS Harriet March and the rest of the usual team are soon on the case which is not as cut and dried as it seems. Milla believes someone is intent on setting up Lorcan but how far would they go and why? With a link to Ben’s own family history, of which we hear a whole lot more in this story, does the often irritating Milla, once again meddling in his investigation, stand to lose more than just her boyfriend this time?
This is a great second book in the new series featuring all of the favourites from book one like Milla’s Granny Brianna and PI Drake together with some new additions, such as the dishy new vicar. I’d definitely recommend reading the first book before this one as there’s lots to know about Ben and Milla. I really like both Ben and Harriet although, for me, Milla is still a bit too much of a loose cannon and not entirely honest at times. The cosy nature of the story allows for plenty of leeway in police procedure, the plot is well laid out and the twisty strands are engrossing in a highly enjoyable story perfectly set in a place with lots of dark history. 4.5*

In this book we get to learn more about Detective Inspector Ben Taylor’s family history as alluded to in the first book, Murder at Raven’s Edge.

The main question here is why, Milla, why? She finds evidence of a crime at the house of her former boyfriend, musician Lorcan Black, and she enlists Kieran Drake to help her clean up the scene.

Ben is called to the scene of a crime at Meg’s Pond and finds the decapitated body of a woman and then finds Lorcan Black draped over a tomb covered in blood and dead to the world. Things aren’t looking too good for Lorcan despite Milla’s intervention.

This story takes us into Ben’s past and how his father and uncles robbed a security depot with the help of the manager, Michael Griffiths, who has been missing since the robbery and presumed dead. After the robbery, Ben’s uncle Liam skipped the country with his wife and son, Will, Ben’s father died in prison, and his uncle Anthony was released and is back at Raven’s Edge. There is a horseman terrorizing the area with a sword and when Uncle Anthony is found dead, it changes the course of the investigation of the headless woman. How are these connected?

There are lots of twists and turns in this book and while Ben is investigating these cases, he ends things with Milla because of her lies, even though they are part of what makes up her personality. She has spent a long time living on her own using her wits and deception and I feel it will take her some time to change—provided she wants to.

This book was every bit as thrilling as the first book, Murder at Raven’s Edge, and learning about Ben’s past was interesting. I hope we see more books with Milla and Ben and that they get back together.

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Murder at Ravenswood House by Louise Marley is a multi-POV mystery and direct continuation of Murder at Raven’s Edge. Milla goes to meet her ex-boyfriend, Lorcan, to later learn that he is the estranged cousin of her current beau, detective Ben. Meanwhile, a murder from Ben’s past is rearing its head up again as the reader learns more about his family and the role they played in a robbery and kidnapping.

What I liked was how we got to see Ben’s family’s issues whereas we saw Milla’s family in the previous book. Ben has several cousins that he doesn’t really have a relationship with and Lorcan, in particular, has very little contact with the family and is a singer who’s third studio album bombed when he did a concept change. Another cousin runs a driving school with his wife and sister-in-law.

The other thing I liked was how the flashbacks were set up, giving us glimpses into what happened fifteen years ago and what led us to the current day. Ben’s father and uncles invaded a home in order to get cash and a man ended up dead. Ben continues to feel guilt about this death and his part in the family’s crimes.

I would recommend this to fans of Murder at Raven’s Edge and readers looking for a mystery with a strong established romantic relationship subplot.

Murder at Ravenswood House has the same gothic novel feeling as it's predecessor Murder at Raven.s Edge.
The two main characters from the first book, Ben Taylor and Mila Graham are back in another story riddled with quirky characters and spooky murders. Their relation has developed into a love affair, but soon Mila's behaviour and her backing of a former lover will throw a spanner into their relationship..

The book starts when a woman's body is found besides a pond, but strangely, her head is missing. Soon the trail leads to Lorcan Black, a famous Gothic Rock artist who recently settled in Ravenswood house and turns out to be Mila's former lover. Mila refuses to accept that Lorcan is guilty. Her support of Lorcan and her sometimes rather erratic behaviour leads to a breakup with Ben.

In the mean time we learn a lot more about Ben's past and his family ties to the local criminal family. One supporting storyline is about event's that took place 15 year's ago and which led to a breakup between Ben and his family.

As in the first book I loved the decidedly Gothic atmosphere of this book, with headless highwayman, swords, attacking ravens etcetera. Lorcan Black is a very interesting support character.

Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When I started this book, I thought it was a cozy mystery, but it was more of a crime thriller with a bit of lightness. That being said, I loved this book and how every character had a role to play. I liked that the main characters; two police officers and an amateur sleuth did a very good job in solving the case. But, I would have wanted more of Ben's POV.
👮🏼‍♂️🕵🏽‍♀️
The case that was solved was engaging from beginning to end and the author did a very good job. I didn't even expect the unfolding of the case and the culprit. It was very good. I enjoyed reading about Ben's past and Elliot's history.

This book was very good and I'd definitely be reading the next books in the series. It was very good

Set in a very Gothic atmosphere, we have Lorcan the very epitome of gothic, we have Ben Taylor the local Detective and we have Milla - girl friend of one, ex girl friend of the other , also not telling current boy friend about the ex.

Steeped in feuds, murderous thieving history in the Elliot family of which Ben and Lorcan both belong means that they can never live down their father’s sins. That was the complicated background.

When a headless corpse is found, and when Lorcan is found all bloodied over a gravestone, he is arrested immediately. When the powers that be discover that the body was robbed from a mortuary so too the blood, detectives know they have someone vengeful on their hands. The tension keeps building up with attempted murders, appearances of a faceless highwaymen and a second murder.

No clues, Milla playing a dangerous and a childish game of concealment with the detectives doing their best to keep panic at bay.

Story was fast paced, characters were good and it was a page turner.

Milla sneaks out to go see her ex-boyfriend Lorcan without her current boyfriend Ben asking questions. But when she arrives at Lorcan’s home he is not there but a shocking item suggesting a horrible crime is. Milla’s first instinct is to call, not her policeman boyfriend, but “fixer” Drake who will clean up the crime scene but at a price. Milla’s secrecy about Lorcan causes a breakup with Ben and as she keeps investigating it seems obvious someone is trying to frame Lorcan and it all has something to do with his and Ben’s families and the past.
This was a good second outing for an unusual heroine and amateur sleuth. We learn a lot more about Ben’s past and why he wants to distance himself from his less than savory father as well as gaining more insight into why Milla is the person she is. Even the secondary characters are both interesting in becoming more fleshed out. This is not your usual “cozy mystery” and is turning into a really interesting set of character I want to learn more about. I look forward to future entries in this series. Recommended.

I really enjoyed Murder at Raven Edge, where we first met Milla Graham and DI Ben Taylor and I was lucky to be able to dive straight into the second book in the series. Milla is once again finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation - this time her old friend and ex-lover, Lorcan Black finds himself at the forefront of the murder investigation when a headless corpse turn up and all the evidence points to him as the suspect. Milla and Ben had the beginnings of a budding romance but during the course of the book they breakup and she makes it her mission to prove Lorcan's innocence in a bid to win Ben back, but Ben has other things on his mind when his dark past comes back to haunt him.

I loved how we got to see Ben's past come to the forefront of this book, we knew he had a bit of a dark past, speculation was galore in my mind during the first book so it was good to set that record straight. We see him face his past whilst Milla tries to win him back but if they find there way back to one another? Well all will be revealed...

Milla Graham is back in the second book of this series, along with DI Ben Taylor and his team. This time it’s more about Bens family, a family he tries to disown but finds himself being dragged back into, whether he wants to or not. We also see Drake, a bit of a shady PI, despite being ex police himself, who uses favours as currency and is definitely a bit on the darker side with the way he works. The story is nicely twisted, bringing up old Highwaymen, said to have lived and died in the area, a life changing incident involving Bens relatives and various incidents that feel very personal to Ben. He’s nicely aided by Harriet, his DS, who could almost have a series of her own ( as could Drake, I’d definitely read more about him). An enjoyable read, with a nicely twisted ending. I look forward to reading whatever comes next.

I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a book tour with Rachel's Random Resources.

This is part of a series, and I also enjoyed the previous book, Murder at Raven's Edge, quite recently. I was pleased to see that within the first few pages, the author created an atmosphere that drew me in. I was also pleased about the return of some characters from the previous book, such as Milla and Ben, and in that regard, this book felt like a great continuation of the first book.

This book also introduced some new characters, and there was a particular character that I found interesting, even if they were not particularly likeable.

I was quite gripped by this book, and found myself turning the pages quickly. I think readers may still enjoy this even if they haven't read the previous book, but I would definitely recommend reading the previous book too.

Thank you to Rachel's Random Resources, the author and the publisher, for the opportunity to read and review this.

Murder at Ravenswood House
by Louise Marley
Pub Date: May 07 2024

Murder at Ravenswood House is the second book in Marley's English Village Mystery series, which is a British Cozy-ish Mystery that features a music journalist who finds herself at odds with her policeman boyfriend. It has many twists and turns, a mystery that balances the suspects, clues and red herrings and will leave you pondering the whodunit until the final reveal. It kept me guessing until the final page! A great follow-up to the first book. I'm looking forward to book 3.

Synopsis: A gruesome murder in charming Raven’s Edge sends Milla Graham sleuthing to catch a killer, win back her detective ex, and dig up a decades-old secret along the way...

Many thanks to #MurderatRavenswoodHouse #NetGalley and #StormPublishing for providing me with an E-ARC of this book.

The beginning had me hooked from the moment we met Mila. She is the kind of character who you will never know what will do next. I enjoyed her relationship with Ben and his interactions with his investigative team.
I thought Ben was smart and liked how he didn't jump to conclusions even when what happened seemed obvious.
It did drag a bit in the middle for me, and I think if I had read the first book I would have been able to understand Mila's actions and motivations a bit better which did have me confused during parts of the story. I did really enjoy uncovering all the info about Ben's family and his past, and thought the mystery was well plotted and I didn't figure it out until it was revealed.
I will definitely go back and read book one, and be reading any future installments in this series.

This is the 2nd novel in this sequence but I did read this first but makes no difference to how I felt about the first book I read, too many characters, and I did wonder how Milla was able to exist we know she is a compulsive liar and breaks into properties steals money but about halfway through this novel, we find out she has a trust fund, so why the need to steal money.
Her mother was murdered some 18 years ago and she is trying to find out who killed her, but is more of a nuisance than anything else, and even Ben who did fancy her has now finished with her because of her lying no one can believe her.
Sorry, this is not my style of the book too many players and a very haphazard story it's a shame as I think there is a good story there but needs pruning down and get the forensics going.

The trouble with small towns is not that you know everyone, but that everyone thinks they know you.
DI Ben Taylor is in the village of Raven's Edge to investigate a rather bizarre murder in abandoned manor house only very recently occupied by Lorcan, music journalist Milla Graham's ex-boyfriend (now a Goth rock star). Ben and Milla are together at the beginning of the book, and that irritates both DS Harriet and shady PI Drake who is ex-police. All this plus a headless body in the pond, an abundance of blood in the chapel, and a notorious town history of highwaymen and witches. Lots of twists and a totally blindsiding ending! Super!
I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Storm Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!
