In this book, we get to enjoy unique tales of human feelings and emotions. These stories are realistic and true, as they are picked from various walks of life. The first story from the magical place of Srinagar is an old tale (pre-independence time) of fear, which makes the human mind imaginary. The second story can be a horror tale or the mind's unexplainable imagination, but we get to realize the strength of faith and belief in the almighty. The third story is totally paranormal and cannot be evaded by any faith or tradition. The fourth story is a bit hilarious; as the tenant said, it's all in the mind. This fifth story reminded me of a little prank of my lecturer's son: one day we (the graduation drama group) were in our lecturer's house working on our play. Ma'am had prepared lemonade for all, and four lemons were spoiled. She was about to throw them in the dustbin. Her son picked them up, placed them in different corners of the street, and asked us to wait. It was hilarious to notice the street being avoided by riders and walkers, all thanks to the spoiled lemons. The sixth story reminds us that there is still hope for kindness and courage in this dangerous world. The last story is a romantic fiction that stays incomplete because, at times, the journey of love is very long.
"Thirteen: True Stories" featured a collection of thirteen true, short, and crisp stories on various topics based on true incidents over the years in various cities of India. Some stories were spooky, some horrifying, while others made me believe in human kindness, and some ended humorously. Spooky haunted stories kept me on edge, and I had a creepy feeling while reading them.
The stories such as "The Guide" and "Scary Nights" really had an impact on me, and some stories were lighthearted and they were the only relief for me.
The book also included one fictional story, which I liked a lot, but it was truly heartbreaking to read and I would have loved to read more about that story. The writing skills were captivating, perfectly capturing the essence of the storyline without dragging it further.
Even though the stories were short, as a reader, I could feel the emotions expressed by the author. The vivid description of the surroundings and situations really made it an interesting read.
