One Prince. One Heir. One secret that will change their fates.
On the night of her wedding to King Claude, Dagmara is abducted by a ruthless assassin who wields horrifying magic. With her death looming, she fights to stay alive and clings to hope that Claude will rescue her. However, Dagmara uncovers a secret about her past—one that is entwined with Claude’s deepest fears and could tear them apart forever. Will love be enough to bring two broken souls together, or will they fall as their world threatens to crumble?
When Magda discovers she possesses not one, but two branches of magic, she realizes that she shares her terrifying powers with the murderous First Prince—cursed and entombed for eternity. Now, she, her friends, and her loyal dog Odie must embark on a quest across kingdoms to uncover the tomb’s location and prevent him from rising again.
As time runs out, the two must come together and confront not only the dark legacy of the First Prince, but also the truth about how to save their kingdom from a deadly magic—before their world is lost forever.
Suuuuch an underrated trilogy! I can’t wait for book 3, book 2 was really fun and reminded me how much I LOVED the magic system in this world ⭐️
It’s upper YA, on kindle unlimited and is dual pov following 2 female main character best friends who switch places (a princess and an assassin). Really fun exploration of the world with 2 different love stories, murder mystery and a lot of intrigue.
“Everything in my life…my role…my family…especially my illness, had told me what I can and can’t do. For the first time, I get to choose.”
thank you so much to the abrom authors for the arc!! this book was one i’ve been anticipating since finishing the first one and it was AMAZING!!!! i have never been more excited to start a book and loved every second of this!
picking up right where the first one ended, we’re immediately thrown into action and WOW was it utterly gripping. i truly can’t explain how much i love these books, these characters, and this amazing story. there was never a moment where i was bored and just when i would think i had everything figured out, another twist came that had me screaming in the middle of the night. the ending of this book?! my jaw dropped to the floor! this was such an amazing reading experience and i beyond excited for the third book!!!!

“She threw boiling water in my face.” “I hope it blisters.”
“I’ve never healed a burn before.” “Sad excuse for a Life Gaurdian then, aren’t you?”

“As with every time her health was at its lowest, she reminded herself it would eventually get better, no matter how hard it was in the moment.”
words can’t describe how strong this girl is. as someone who sometimes struggles with dizziness and has has some scary experiences in the past, i look up to dagmara and admire her strength. <3
“Martine reached out, and Dagmara fell into her friend’s embrace. The guard hugged her tightly, and for the first time, Dagmara accepted that she was finally safe. No matter how long it would last, at that moment, she was alive and free.”
“But I want you to know I’m not doing this because Claude asked me. I’m here because you’re my friend.”
a little martine appreciation here, she’s such an amazing friend and her friend op with dagmara is so sweet <3

now let’s get into a little of the villains in this book…. AND I HAVE ONE THING TO SAY: if villain, why hot?!!! (i heavily dislike them)
“Princess, we are not supposed to be friends. We are supposed to be mortal enemies.”
a new villain was introduced and i was literally so intrigued at first (more specifically because he called magda princess LIKEE) there were so many questions surrounding this character and his intentions and oh this guy had me ANXIOUS.
“What? You don’t want to see me in person?” “No, I’m going to see that you stay locked away and that you never get that chance.” “What a shame. Just when I was beginning to admire you.” “You don’t admire me. We’re enemies. You said it yourself that you wanted to kill me.” “You can’t run from power, and neither can I. No matter if we are destined to kill each other, we might be the only equally matched souls in a millennia. Doesn’t that king of intimacy intrigue you?”
-
“This is not going to fit.” “Don’t worry, it’s bigger than it looks.” “I’m sure you tell that to every woman, don’t you?”
OH I ABSOLUTELY LOATHEEEEEE THIS MAN(?) i thought he was hot in the first book but he did some very questionable and unforgivable things LOATHEEEE I SAY! dagmara absolutely ate him up every time too what a queen
“Do you have a mask to hide your hideous face?”
GET HIS ASS
“Fantasizing about me?” “I’m fantasizing about killing you.”
“I love seeing you wield a blade.” “The next blade I wield will be driven through your heart.”
we all love enemies to lovers right… HOW ABOUT ENEMIES WHO STAY ENEMIES oh the banter was literally top mf tier i was cackling every time dagmara said something
“We will never be on the same side, Sabien.” “What a shame. We look so good together.”
there was many moments when he would say something that had me like “wait that was kinda hot” and then he’d open his mouth and i’d immediately take it back!!! oh i’ve never read about a character that makes me switch how i feel every two seconds RAHHH

“I’ve been choosing you every single day.”
“I told you I would always be here for you. Your battles are my battles, even if I’m on the sidelines.”
they had such cute moments together and are just so so wholesome I LOVE!!!
He extended his hand down toward Magda. “Still trust me?”
THE FLASHBACKS TO BOOK ONE OH I LOVED IT!!
-
now it’s time for my favs, dagmara and claude <33 i do NOT apologize for how long this section is going to be and how many quotes i’ll be using because i desperately NEED to express my love for these two!!!
“I’m here for my wife.”
the “my wife” did something to me every time i swear, ANYWAYS that reunion was one of THE BEST i have ever read oh my god i was so happy, jumping with joy, tears in my eyes!!!!
“Dagmara didn’t want to be sent away. She wanted to stay with him, one of the only people she felt safe with.”
SHE FEELS SAFE WITH CLAUDE AGHHHHHHH oh these two had my heart hurting and feeling so happy at the same time
now to my FAVORITE CHAPTER….. CHAPTER 23. oh my brain chemistry actually changed after reading that and i kid you not it took me like an hour to read it because i kept rereading lines and i was actually going crazy IT WAS SO GOOD AND WILL FOREVER BE ENGRAVED IN MY MIND i literally think about this chapter all the time
“He remembered. Stairs were difficult with her health—a seemingly mundane obstacle was her worst nightmare—and now only did he remember, he had asked for a room on the first floor.”
i need him so bad HES LITERALLY SO THOUGHTFUL AND CONSIDERATE OH MY GOSHHHH!!!!! the way he remembered about the stairs, because OF COURSE HE DID plus all the times with the salt, shaven too, CONSIDERATE AND CARING KINGGGGG oh my gosh I LOVE THEM SO MUCH I COULD ACTUALLY CRY
“A truth for a truth?” There was a twinckle in his dark eyes as he remembered the game. His voice wavered as he replied, “Did you ever give me the truth?”
let’s move past how that first like HURT (i love angst keep it coming) BUT THE FLASHBACKS I GOT TO BOOK ONE EEEEEEEEEEEK love love loved the deja vu and then once the game started ARGHHH i had the biggest smile on my face seeing them having a small moment of peace together
“You’re safe here.”
crying i love him
“And how does the condition affect you?” “It… Wait—you’re not surprised?” “No, I noticed. I was waiting for you to feel comfortable enough to tell me.”
ONE: HE ASKED OF IT AFFECTED HER. TWO: HE NOTICED. THREE: HE WAITED FOR HER TO FEEL COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO TELL HER.
RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
“…she found herself reassured. Calm. Content. Safe. He had paid attention. He had seen her.”
yes he did bae that man loves you and i love you both <3
“What do you want me to say?” “I want you to say you will come home with me.”
IN A HEARTBEAT IM ON MY WAYYYYYYY (this had my heart tweaking)
“Then I need to hear you say you hate me.” “Claude—“ “You despised me once. Say it, I’m begging you. I need to be released from this turmoil. Say you hate me so much that I can think about something other than you.” “I don’t hate you, but the world thinks you’re married to Magda. As soon as we find her, I’ll step away and leave the guardians to do what they do best.” “I don’t care if you’re not a guardian, Dagmara.”
“Claude…” “Then tell me you hate me,” “You’ve ruined my life, Dagmara. Free me. Say you detest me. Otherwise, you will return to Azurem, and I won’t know a day of peace.” “I hate you. I hate how you put your people first. I hate how resilient you are. I hate how conscientious you are and how much you see me. I loathe the salt gifts and that you learned the Azuremi waltz for me. And most of all, I hate how guilty I feel for hurting you. You deserve someone better than me.” “Oh, Dagmara. It doesn’t sound like you know the definition of hate.”
OH THE ANGSTTTTTTT WAS TOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD i was shaking i was tweaking i was screaming! there is literally no better feeling than a book making you go through so many emotions all at once GOSH I LOVE THESE TWO SO MUCH.
“There was never any in yours.”
this quote changed lives (mine) the WAY i gasped, jumped up, set my kindle down, and blank stared at the wall for five minutes. OH TO GO BACK IN TIME AND READ THAT CHAPTER FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!! the WAY claude would never have done that, the WAY he got so protective of her OH MY GOD NO ONE WILL EVER COMPARE. IYKFK!!!
“I like you for who you are, Mad King and all, but yes, I can pretend to like you a little longer, Your Majesty.” A smile creased her lips, remembering the words they once shared before their first dance.” “Shall we pretend we’re in love for one evening? Then we can return to disliking one another.” “I can pretend to like you for one evening, Your Majesty.” “Claude returned the smile, no doubt remembering the moment as well. He shifted even closer, his forehead resting against hers.”
DO YOU GET DEJA VU OHHHHH
“I want every second you’ll give me. It is, of course, for the betterment of our kingdoms.”
this quote. the two sentences they share together. oh i was GIGGLING every time they were mentioned, thinking back to the first book, and everything in between to get to this moment <3
“I need a chair.” “You’re not staying.” “It’s not for me,” “We don’t have chairs for guests.” “The give her one of yours.” "I will do no such—" “Claude started forward, ignoring the rush of in-sults. He proceeded to the closest of the nineteen, who quickly scrambled out of the way, rushing to the next council member for safety. Picking up the oversized chair, the seams of his clothing straining, Claude muttered a half-hearted thank you before returning the chair to Dagmara. He set it on the ground beside her. "For you," he said, his gaze fierce.”
oh girl i was GIGGLING!!!! CLAUDE I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!! CARING AND COMPASSIONATE KING PLEASE MARRY ME
“Why aren’t you inside?” He asked Her thoughts answered, “Because my heart calls to yours.” “Because so can’t breathe knowing you’re hurting.”
OH SHE LOVES HIM!!!!!! THE YEARNING WENT CRAZYYYYY
“You’re a king, and I’m…” “The woman I’m in love with. There. I’ve said it. You’ve officially driven me mad. You, Dagmara. You and only you.”
CAN YOU HEAR ME SCREAMINGGGGGG?! OH HE LOVES HER!!!!!!
“I can’t breathe when you’re near me—I can’t breathe when you’re gone. You have ruined me. I can’t go anywhere with you and not desperately want to…”
WANT TO WHAT? DESPERATELY WANT TO WHAT? oh THEY have ruined me i fear i will never be the same again
“Don’t torture me with your touch. I am only a man.”
SAID THIS AFTER THE FAINTEST TOUCH MIND YOU oh i’m sick
“I can’t be cordial with a woman who holds my very being in her hands. So either tell me you detest me, and walk away now, or—“ “Or marry me. Dagmara Zosia. We will do it all over again. I will add more of my blood to your ring, I would marry you a thousand times over. But I will no longer waver in this unknown with you. I have given you all of me, and I want all of you in return. No masks, no false names, no reservations.”
“I can’t tell you I hate you, because I’m hopelessly, madly in love with you. I’m scared that as soon as I admit it, I’ll lose you somehow. Because that’s what happens to people I love. But i can’t lose you. I can’t…” “You can’t lose me, even if you tried. I will always find you, because you are my heart, my home.” “And you are mine.” “Then marry me.” “Yes.”
OH IM ACTUALLY SICK!!!!! I LOVE THEM SO MUCH AND I WILL NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT IT!!!! THESE QUOTES?! SELF EXPLANATORY. they are literally one of my favorite book couples ever.
“I’m not giving your ring back, by the way, in this little interim before we get married again.” “Then, in this interim, I will not stop referring to you as my wife—Queen of Ilusauri.” “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.” “As you wish, my queen.”
SO CUTE.
“Search her any further and tonight your friends will be searching for your corpse.”
“If you touch my wife, I’ll kill you. Don’t underestimate me.”
“Hands off my wife.”
i love me a protective man!!! OH HE LOVES HER
“I want a kingdom to return home to.” “I will. For the safety of our people.” “And the betterment of our kingdoms.”
EEEEEEEEEHEHHEHEHEEEEEEE
“I didn’t fall in love with you because you were or weren’t a guardian. I fell for your wit, your loyalty, your smile, and so many other things I could list that have nothing to do with magic.”
i fear i will NEVER get over them.
“Even if your magic unleashes and tears down our world, I will gladly tear it down with you if it means we can be together.” “I’m scared,” “I know, I was too, until I met you.”
OH MY GOD it’s been weeks since i’ve read this and writing this review has me SCREAMING again. i don’t know how to describe how much these two make me feel, just that they make me so utterly happy and im pretty sure i actually cried because of them while reading his book
“I could be a monster.” “Then be a monster. Rip me to shreds, tear me apart if you have to. But be my monster. We fight this world together. I am yours.”
BUT. BE. MY. MONSTER. yeah i’m just going to leave that here because WOW claude THE MAN THAT YOU ARE.
“For the betterment of our kingdom… I need you to say the rest. I can’t finish the sentence without you.”
OUR KINGDOM. OUR. KINGDOM. THE WAY IT WENT FROM OUR KINGDOMS TO OUR KINGDOM RAHHHHHH (this scene has my heart beating out of my chest)
“Because I don’t say it enough, I love you.” “And I love you.” “Let’s go home.”
crying i love them so much!!!

oh happy ending right!!!! RIGHT???? WRONG! oh that ending was actually CRIMINAL. the way my jaw dropped when i realized who that was and then immediately saw all the signs that were subtly always there OH THE ABROM AUTHORS ARE ACTUAL MASTERMINDS
anyways!!!! this book made me remember why i love reading. i immediately knew this was going to be a five star read before even opening the book. i love when you just KNOW!!!! the escapism, the feelings, the emotions. there is no better feeling than being so immersed in a book, loving characters, and loving a story. this series made me feel all of that and more. i am SO beyond excited for the next one!!!!
4.5 ⭐️I’m so excited to jump back into this world again.. but now I’m impatiently waiting for the 3rd book, because surpriiisee: it’s gonna be a trilogy instead of a duology 😍
I gotta be honest and say that reading Dagmara’s POV is my favorite hands down!! I just love her and her and Claude!!🥹 Claude is simply chef’s kiss! sorry Ravi, but you’re not even close 😌
I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book with the villains (not gonna spoil anything by mentioning names), but one of them has got me very confused about how I feel about them (the curse of an ememies to lovers book girly - red flags don’t exist 🙈)
love the fantasy, the romance, the plot and it just feels fresh 🤌🏼
thank you to the Abroms sisters for an e-ARC of this wonderful book!🙏🏼
spoilers ahead:
ELIGOOOORRR!! dude, why you gotta be evil but so good at flirting?! here I was basically forgetting all about Ravi and then you TRY TO KILL Magda?! how do you come back from that? honestly it probably won’t take much for me to forgive you, because that tension and banter was unmatched🤭
a hot, lonely, evil, hurt, cursed, handsome prince who is excellent at flirting and makes your skin tinkle with a brush of a hand or just close proximity? how am I supposed to not fall in love immediately?
Jaw is on the floor at that ending!!! I knew it was too good to be true ...
This was such a good sequel omg!! It was fast paced and I was hooked the entire time! It really is like princess and the pauper but set in a fantasy world. I will be counting down the days til book 3!!!!
I was so excited to start this sequel and it was great!! This picks up right where we left off in the first book and is so action-packed and exciting! We’re immediately thrust into this amazingly intricate plot planning too and so we get a very fast-paced, but believably developed, story. We also see so many new places from this world that we didn’t get to in the first book and the adventure is so fun!! Plus, this is so twisty; I lowkey got whiplash from all the surprises but in a good way lol
The magic system is one of my favourites as well! It’s so intriguing and just when you think you know it, it blows your mind all over again 🤭 It’s also perfectly easy to understand it while not being any less exciting.
As for the characters, they were the best (as always). There was a found family trope in here too which I’m a sucker for. The FMCs, Magdalena and Dagmara, have the sweetest friendship and it’s so nice seeing how unwavering their love for each other is. They truly go to hell and back for each other throughout this book and I loved it <3 Also the love stories?! So nice! The romance never falters and I appreciate it so much. Ravi and Magdalena are so sweet while Dagmara and Claude’s bring the steamier scenes to play 😚 AND there are so many quotable moments in here! These boys just know how to be there for their girls without underestimating their power and it’s the cutest. Sooo, I adored them both sm! P.S. Mr. Claude gives us so many great ‘my wife’ and ‘my queen’ moments in this too teehee
This series is one of my indie faves so I encourage you guys to give the first book, The Mad King & The False Queen, a chance - I really do think you’ll love it!! + A big thank you to the Abrom sisters for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest review 🤍
Picking right up from where book one left off, The First Prince and The Last Heir throws us right back into the wonderful, mystic, amazing world that the Abrom sisters have created. Did I think that Magda wasn’t the most dynamic character in the first book? Yes.
She ABSOLUTELY redeemed herself and grew into her own (and more!) as the book progressed, not only becoming a heroine in her own right, but nearly unseating Dagmara as my favorite character in this series.
While the Mad King and False Queen taught us about the kingdoms of Life, Mind, and Soul, The First Prince and Last Heir gives us an equally detailed dive into the last two realms, unveiling plenty of secrets in the process.
I admit, I got halfway through the book only to be hit by another stunning surprise, and not the kind that takes you out of the book, but one that makes you grip the pages and keep turning (or in my case, clicking).
There is no cliche, there is no hum-drum same ‘ol stereotypical fantasy events (okay, i might be fibbing a little on that one, but it’s all written so wonderfully that it feels as natural parts of the book, not an attempt to stick to what’s typically expected of the genre.
And just when you think the ride is over, there’s even more hinted at in the end, and now I too, am waiting with bated breath for the next in the series.
“The First Prince and the Last Heir,” by Hope Abrom and Amanda Abrom
I loved this book so much! I think I might even love it a tiny bit more than the first book in the series. If you read book 1 already than it was a perfect second book from that, everything kept the same vibe and feels, and they did not drop the ball. There was a lot more action in this book compared to book 1 and it was well paced and easy to follow along. I loved all the main characters finally getting to interact with each other. It immediately got 5 stars from me because of the truth serum scene, was literally so good. I loved everything, utterly perfect, 5 out of 5 stars.
-Royalty -Enemies To Lovers -Morally Grey -Magic -Kidnapped
Oh my gosh they knocked it out of the park again!! I was hooked from the very beginning and didn't want to stop! I am so glad they decided to make a third book to the series. I wasn't ready to be done with these characters and the world!!!
I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book follows immediately where The Mad King and The False Queen leaves off and I'm so happy it released so soon after. I had been wanting to find out what happened to Dagmara and hoping for a HEA with Claude.
This book answers a lot of questions and ties up many loose ends, however, there will be a third, as the ending of this one opened up more questions. I have a good idea on who the Mind Guardian really is, and if my theory is correct, then machinations have been put into play for a LONG time.
I enjoyed The First Prince and The Last Heir immensely, even more than the first book. A big gripe I had in the first book was how annoying Magda was about her dog, and how she continually made stupid decisions. This book finds her reunited with her friends and she's much stronger when she has other characters to play off of.
Still loving the scenes with Dagmara and Claude, and the interruptions are driving me nuts! Hoping for some peace and quiet for them in the last book.
I'm glad there will be a third to tie everything up, and according to the authors' IG, it'll be releasing sometime next year. I plan on picking up physical copies of the trilogy once it's finished as I really love the covers.
Received an ARC for this review (thank you so much!)
Firstly, I’m so glad that we got the confusion from the last book cleared up at the very beginning of this book. I knew we were off to a good start! I’m forever The Mad King stan 🫶🏼
I liked the storyline for this and how we got to finally meet The First Prince. Ngl, I was secretly hoping Magda and him would kiss, but alas, she’s loyal to Ravi *sigh*.
The villains were the perfect amount of evil, and the new characters that were introduced were great. It also kept it interesting when characters would be killed unexpectedly. The pacing for this book was good too.
The one thing I didn’t enjoy was the overuse of Odie, the beloved canine of Magda’s. His constant interruptions and gestures, at times, made the story feel more youthful/childish.
Now let’s talk about the cliffhanger: OMG. Was not expecting the shape shifting at all and I’m totally stumped who it could be!
What I would love to see from the next book, is Dagma being more baddass with her poisons. Considering she used to be an actual assassin for the crown, this needs to be more played into.
So excited to see where the next book takes us! 📚💕
The First Prince and the Last Heir is a thrilling continuation of the series, and I have to say, I might even love it just a tiny bit more than the first book! If you’re already a fan of the first installment, you’ll be pleased to know that this sequel maintains the same captivating vibe and immersive world-building, while adding new layers of excitement and intensity that make it a truly gripping read.
One of the standout features of this book is the increased action. The pacing is fantastic—well-balanced and fast enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, but never so rushed that it leaves you confused. The plot is easy to follow, and the stakes feel higher than ever. The magic system continues to be intriguing, with more details and powers revealed, which only deepens the world-building.
But what truly shines in The First Prince and the Last Heir are the characters. If you were rooting for the dynamics of the main cast in the first book, you’ll absolutely love how they finally get to interact with one another in this sequel. Watching their relationships evolve—especially the tension between enemies-turned-lovers—is a joy. I particularly appreciated the morally grey aspects of the characters, as it made them feel real and complex, and added a layer of unpredictability to their actions and decisions.
And then there’s the truth serum scene. Wow. It was hands down one of the most intense and satisfying moments of the book, and it was so good, it almost single-handedly earned the book its five-star rating from me. It was a masterful moment that blended tension, humor, and raw emotion all in one scene.
Themes of royalty, betrayal, and magic continue to run deep throughout the story. Add in the kidnapping twist, and you’ve got a narrative full of twists and turns that keeps you guessing at every corner. I couldn't put it down.
Overall, The First Prince and the Last Heir is an exceptional follow-up that builds beautifully on the foundations laid in book one. The authors did not drop the ball, and if you were a fan of the first book, this one will leave you equally, if not more, satisfied. Highly recommend for fans of magical, action-packed stories with complex characters and romance that sizzles. Five stars all the way!
I received this as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was so good! Did I want more romance and smut? Kind of, but I’m hoping book 3 doesn’t let me down. This book had really good pacing and we got a chance to really get to know more about the characters. I LOVE Claude and Dagmara. For some reason, Ravi and Magda just don’t hit for me - it feels like there’s something missing there.
The magic and building on this world was so good in this book. She dives deeper into Magda’s powers and how she can channel multiple kinds, along with some conversations with the First Prince that kept me on the edge of my seat.
The cliffhanger??? I am so excited for the next book and to see where this story goes!
I would definitely recommend this book to any fantasy lovers! It was an easy read that kept me engaged for 85% of the story (I skimmed through a couple parts when I was laying in bed).
This book was the perfect continuation of The Mad King and the False Queen. The authors built on the groundwork laid by the previous book, while still making this feel like its own entity. This is one of the few books where I don't see many of the plot twists coming (very refreshing as an avid reader). The Abrom sisters never fail in keeping me on my toes.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a fantasy adventure with a touch of heist. I, for one, can't wait for the next book to come out!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The First Prince and the Last Heir is Book 2 in The Mad King and the False Queen by Hope Abrom and Amanda Abrom. Book 1 laid a solid foundation for the series, but book 2 was off the chart fantastic. I could not put the book down and the characters and their relationships grew and changed. I liked that the authors broke the book into 4 parts that I thought was perfect. The ending was interesting and makes me want the next book ASAP! A new Guardian Magic is released and it should be exciting. I can't wait. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
The First Prince and the Last Heir completely pulled me in. I was excited to get back to these characters.
Watching Dagmara struggle with fear and identity while confronting a terrifying past had me glued to every page. Claude’s loyalty, his fury, and his aching love for her made me ache too. Their relationship felt raw and tested at every turn. I just wish it was open door romance but that’s just my preference. They are still my favorite couple in this story.
The tension between Magda and the first prince was electric. For a moment I thought something was going to happen between them. And I was going to be there for it lol.
This is more than a fantasy quest. It is love colliding with destiny in every way. Dagmara and Claude stood at the heart of it, but Magda’s unfolding power and the dark pull of the First Prince kept me turning pages.
Now I’m not so patiently waiting for the next installment.
I was very happy to receive the ARC copy and discover a whole new series to explore. I quickly read the first book, but it left more questions than answers—and not in a good way. Finishing the second book proved challenging, and here’s why:
Characters: They lack depth and consistency. Their personalities and decision-making are driven almost entirely by last-minute emotions, which rarely align with their supposed morals or internal worlds. The main characters feel shallow, incompetent, and directionless. Dagmara, for instance, can barely walk up a flight of stairs without fainting, yet we’re meant to believe she’s a royal assassin—how did she ever train for such a role? Claude, the supposed formidable Mad King, comes across more like a quirky NPC obsessed with an invisible bird, with no other memorable traits. Relationships are equally baffling—Dagmara seems to forget Aleksy’s death instantly, has a strange relationship with Sabien, and her supposed “real love” with Claude is based on flimsy, surface-level attraction. The same issues plague Magda and Ravi’s connection. Shallow motivations, simplistic moral compasses, and juvenile interactions make the relationships feel less genuine than those in a Disney cartoon. Even the main villain seems more like a low-budget cosplay than a true threat. Surprisingly, Odie—the dog—manages to exhibit more personality and emotional intelligence than everyone else combined.
World-Building: The world itself shows promise. The magic system, particularly its dormant nature, is intriguing and offers a lot of potential. Kudos to the author for crafting a setting that invites curiosity and exploration.
Storytelling: While the plot and overall concept are compelling, the execution falls flat. Readers crave immersion, character relatability, and a logical progression of events. Instead, we’re given illogical characters with the emotional maturity of teenagers and the intellect of scarecrows.
Writing: Writing style is a craft that improves with practice, and this series highlights the need for more refinement. The frequent reliance on “telling” rather than “showing,” coupled with contemporary superficiality in dialogue and character interactions, detracts from the medieval fantasy setting.
In summary, while the world and plot have potential, the characters, relationships, and execution undermine what could have been a great story. With more polished writing and deeper character development, this series could evolve into something far more impactful.

The First Prince and the Last Heir, Book Two of The Mad King and the False Queen series by Hope Abrom and Amanda Abrom, is a gripping and emotionally charged fantasy that raises the stakes while deepening the characters readers have grown to love. This installment expertly balances danger, romance, and epic world-building, drawing readers further into a kingdom on the brink of collapse.
Dagmara’s storyline is intense and compelling, beginning with her shocking abduction on the very night of her wedding. Her struggle for survival is both harrowing and heartfelt, and the revelations about her past add powerful emotional weight to her relationship with King Claude. The authors do an excellent job portraying love not as something simple or perfect, but as a force tested by fear, secrets, and sacrifice.
Magda’s journey brings a thrilling sense of adventure to the story. Discovering that she shares dangerous magic with the cursed First Prince raises chilling questions about fate and power. Her quest across kingdoms, with loyal companions and the unforgettable dog Odie, adds warmth, humor, and momentum to the darker elements of the plot.
What truly stands out is how the dual storylines converge, weaving personal struggles with larger consequences for the kingdom. The pacing is strong, the magic system intriguing, and the emotional stakes feel genuine throughout.
The First Prince and the Last Heir is a rich, suspenseful continuation that expands the world while exploring themes of identity, destiny, and the cost of power. Fans of epic fantasy will find this sequel deeply satisfying and impossible to put down, eagerly anticipating the final chapter in the series.

“Rip me to shreds, tear me apart if you have to. But be my monster. We fight this world together. I am yours.”
This second installment of the Mad King and the False Queen trilogy completely blew me away! I went into it thinking there was no way it could top the first book—but I was proven wrong in the best possible way. The character development was phenomenal, and the plot twists had me gasping more than once. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the story took a turn I didn’t see coming.
This has quickly become one of the best YA/NA fantasy series I’ve read in the past decade, and I’m genuinely shocked it hasn’t gained more recognition. It deserves to be on every reader’s radar!
I’m now (impatiently) counting down the days until the final book. I’m especially excited to see how Ravi’s character arc will unfold in this new world. And Teos—oh, Teos! I can’t wait to see him step into a more prominent role. His journey has so much potential, and I’m hoping the authors give him the spotlight he deserves.
In short, The First Prince and the Last Heir is a masterpiece of character growth, intrigue, and heart-stopping twists. If you haven’t started this series yet, do yourself a favor and dive in. You won’t regret it!
This sequel picked off right where we were left in the first book. I must Amanda and Hope always do the fantastic job with titles of their books, especially with linking the title with plot of the book. This novel answers the loose ends that were left out in first book. There's much to unravel with this one, with Dagmara's life, new magic, Claude's life, The First Prince himself, Magda's magic and legends across the kingdoms.
For characters, if you were not obsessed with Claude and Dagmara is the first book, you'll be obsessed with these two in this one!! Magda's character was a dynamic one as compared to the first book. There's definitely epic love confessions— with wonderful character chemistry. Even we get to know more about Sabien and Claude, and their past. The first book gave details about first three branches of magic— Life, Mind, and Soul, this one focuses on the last two— especially void which is the family magic of The First Prince. This one is more action packed, and at the end of the book, when you're left wondering that it's over. The Abrom sisters throw the twist to suprise you and look forward to the third and final installment.
I received an advance review copy for free from Booksirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an early access e-book version of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
The next installment to the popular series of the Mad King & False Queen. We continue from the cliffhanger that book 1 left us in. The beginning was intense as always within this series. I found myself being gripped, wanting to know what happens next.
We are thrust headfirst into the chaotic scene in which Dagmara is kidnapped by Sabien. Turns out all is not what it’s seems from book 1. The novel is written in the same way as Book 1. After we have Dagmara’s POV, we follow through Magda’s POV.
The twist and turn this book takes you through its journey. Because the book has two points of views, I had to adjust myself and remember where the last person’s story ended in the latest chapters. But overall, I still did enjoy this book. This sequel is more intense and driven from the previous book 1, and I could not wait to get to the next chapters to find out what was in store for us.
The second book of this installment did not disappoint their readers and the ending left me curious for more.
the first book in this series was a 5 star. i was obsessed. addicted. it blew my expectations out of the water. i also loved this book so much. each character is so dear to me. the plot line in this one was just a bit slow, and drawn out. i felt like the book couldve been shorter and i lost interest in the last 200 pages.
alas, i love each character and the world so i will be continuing the series fs!
It can't just end where it ended. I want the next book right now. Now with that out I really enjoyed reading this book. I had a hard time putting the book down, I just want to know what happened next. The plot overall was predictable, like the first, but just as the first book it has all this little twist and turnes I didn't see coming.
I still isn't sold on Magdalanas pov. They was better than in the first book but some of her pov still felt boring to me and I just wanted to skim over them.
I really like Dagmara and Claudes relatinship. They are one of my new fave couples.
If you like:
👑 dual pov 👑 two storylines 👑 elemental magic 👑 enemies to lovers 👑 royalty 👑 chronic illness rep 👑 touch her and you die
Then this book is for you.
Thank you to Hope Abrom and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this ARC! I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
4.75⭐️ rounding up. This was a solid sequel that didn’t suffer from the typical sequel slump. The pacing, characters, and writing were just as good as the first book. The reason I’m deducting just a little bit from the 5 star rating is the repetitiveness of the battles and villains in this book. It felt like most of this book was battles or building up to battles against the same antagonist. It almost felt like too many battles. Did I still devour it? Absolutely. Am I obsessed over Claude? Yup. Can I wait for the third installment? No. I am excited it’ll be out in 2025 though! I love this series and it’s severely underrated! I also love finding great indie authors!!
Hope and Amanda if you read these, I’d love to get an ARC for the final book when available! Put me out of my misery, I need to know what happens!
"I'll lose you somehow. Because that's what happens to people I love."
I am both bad and elated this was not a duology. I love Dagmara and the Mad King. Dagmara has always been a formidable character despite her illness. She pushed through and fought her invisible illness the whole way even though the people around her told her nothing was wrong. When you talk about relating to a character.. this is that character.
I am worried about the Viette...I have theories!
This one had a lot of death and grief. Just remember no one is safe. But the journey is worth the ride.
When I say 5 stars, I mean *every* single damn one of them!
When I say "slut," I mean *FERAL* for the "my wife" trope.
Claude... my guy, my mad king, my *majesty* (cue me kneeling dramatically - may or may not be crawling). Damn, my guy. You've got the rizz, the presence—I'm over here blushing, screaming, and rolling around giggling.
1. Am I annoyed this duology turned into a trilogy Absolutely.
2. Am I practically frothing at the mouth for book 3? Also absolutely.
I liked the second book even better than the first one. The stakes were raised just enough, both of the main characters had gained people that they cared about, and the world was at stake.
Much like the last book, I tended to enjoy Dagmara's perspective a bit more than Magdalena, but I really feel like Magda came into her own more in this book.
So much happened in the plot, with character development, and in exploring the world. And with the twist at the end, I'm really looking forward to what new challenges will arise in book 3.
I didn't know it could get better or more intense after the first one. But it did! I have never been so obsessed with a book series so quick. I read the first and second back to back in mere DAYS! and cannot wait for more. This book is action packed, sexy, intense, all of the things I want and need as a ready in this genre. The personalities of the characters are perfect and consistent and the chemistry on the page is undeniable, heart stopping, and absolutely beautiful. Ravi and Magda's relationship was beautiful and Dagmara and the Mad King was more than everything I needed.
So thankful I was able to be an ARC reader for this book! I couldn’t put it down! This was such a great follow up to The Mad King and the False Queen. The romance had me giggling and kicking my feet, but the action had me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails to see what happened next. This book has it all-action, romance, magic, royalty, twist and turns. I’m hooked! I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out!!
