Kirkus Reviews verdict on this novel was "Get It" and no wonder they said so – the book is brilliantly crafted!
‘Above the Ashes’ is the first book in the ‘Blood and Hexes’ Trilogy which is a smashing tale about the uncanny alliance between a vampire with a conscience and a witch with a thirst for vengeance. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and hope to read the second book in this series as soon as possible.
The book was suspenseful, full of adventure and had the allure required for such a fantasy tale. It is well narrated and gripping enough to hook a person to the series. I especially enjoyed all the parts where the villain of the novel had a prominent role. I found him to be a very intriguing character and someone whom I would fear and yet be allured towards. I was especially taken up with his tenacity and perseverance in getting what he wanted right from the time he first met with the heroine of this novel till the time they all landed up in the 21st century.
The demons in this novel were well developed and described and to see the villain’s connection with them is something thrilling to read and yet quite tantalizing at the same time. Nevertheless, good morals based very much on virtues of white magic, or the white esoteric arts is the main focus of the novel, and one should remember that as one reads this very captivating book.
I loved the portion of the book where the female protagonist hits out at the present generation of tourists who visit Salem in the 21st century and treat the area like a national park, as they click multiple selfies of one another. Little do they realize that so much of grief, horror, pain and agony was experienced by many innocent women during the Salem Witch Trials. I would add on that point that just the way we treat the concentration camps where the Holocaust victims met their end with a lot of reverence, we should do the same for even Salem – at least maintain a bit of decorum and silence where the actual hangings took place, if nothing else!
I found that portion to have been beautifully crafted and it hit me in the gut because I feel such a situation can happen again!
Another portion of the text that was stimulating for me was when the narrator described the female protagonist’s feelings of never-ending pain, injustice meted out to her, and how all her life she has been living like it was a shame to be the person she was. That resonated very well with me and hit me to the core, and I am sure many readers will appreciate that portion of the text. It will really speak to them and inspire them towards a process of healing.
Every scene in this novel is like a reel of a Hollywood film with the HD sound effects included and it is just a heady experience only meant to entertain and enjoy – perfect for Halloween! Vivid descriptions, lucid prose, excellent third person narration and of course, larger than life characters who become living and breathing entities while you are swiftly flipping or swiping pages on your Kindle Fire with a cup of coffee by your side.
I enjoyed the mention of one of my favorite 1980s songs ‘The Stroke’ by Billy Squier as well as the mention of one of my favourite American classic writers namely Nathaniel Hawthorne and his famous novel ‘The Scarlet Letter’. I also enjoyed the villain’s role in this book so much that I just have to mention him again here at this point. He is truly a remarkable character and very authentically crafted by the author with the deft hand of a true literary artist. You really don’t want to miss him. Who he is? How does he meet the heroine and what are his ‘plans’ for her? You need to read this thrilling fantasy adventure to find out. Do acquire this Kindle book this Halloween! You won’t regret it.
Dynamic, fascinating, thrilling and very captivating are the many words that I would call ‘Above the Ashes’. I now look forward eagerly to the next book in the series.
Alexander Fernandez is a brilliant writer and storyteller. He gets 5 stars from me. Kudos to him on a job well done!
This short paranormal fantasy read is ideal for fans of The Salem Witch trials & The Vampire Diaries!
On the first timeline, we follow Sybil, a witch on the run living on the historical village of Salem during the witch hunt period. She’s a good witch just trying to survive, however, a powerful and magical minister BURIED her for CENTURIES 😱
Jump back to present day California, supernatural creatures live peacefully amongst humans and we follow Marcelo, a vampire. Sybil is released after spending hundreds of years captive and burns for revenge. I love morally grey characters, specially if it’s a female-lead! Modern technology of the present day delights and intrigues Sybil, who’s an ancient soul. I found the old English dialogues really well done and could vividly picture what the author was describing.
What you can expect: ✨spells & prophecies ✨morally grey characters ✨vampires & witches ✨female rage ✨friends to lovers ✨revenge & retribution
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review
Above the Ashes is perfect for lovers of Paranormal Romance with vampires, witches, forbidden love, and the Salem Witch Trials!
From the moment Sybil Cotterill escaped one witch hunt only to fall into another, I was completely hooked by her story. The historical elements combined with the supernatural tension were spot on, and I couldn’t get enough of the gripping, pulse-pounding suspense!
Things you will find in ABOVE THE ASHES: * demons * Forbidden love * Witches * Inner battles * Vampires
Sybil is such a fierce, complex character, torn between centuries of vengeance and a newfound connection with Marcelo, the vampire who unknowingly sets her free. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and I loved watching their dynamic shift as Marcelo tries to protect the descendants of her enemies, even while battling his own growing desire for her.
The blend of historical witch trials and modern-day conflict was done so well, and I found myself completely wrapped up in Sybil’s internal struggle. The twists, the tension, and the paranormal romance had me hooked from the first page to the last. I cannot wait to continue the Blood and Hexes trilogy!
Huge thanks to the author for sending me a copy. All opinions are my own.
Above the Ashes is a Paranormal Romance between a witch who has been entrapped in a tomb for 300 years and the vampire who discovers her tomb in modern times. The two grow closer as Marcelo, the vampire, helps Sybil, the witch, adapt, but all Sybil wants is revenge, and since the original perpetrators are long gone, her wrath falls on their descendants. Meanwhile there is a bigger scheme afoot that could cost both Sybil and Marcelo their lives.
I felt SO BAD for Sybil. Getting glimpses of her past during the Salem Witch Trials added so much depth to her character, but my heart hurt and was filled with rage on her behalf. Not to mention that the idea of being entombed for over 300 years is terrifying. (And it’s giving me TVD flashbacks. Remember all those desiccating vampires? *shudders*) The author did a fantastic job at immersing the reader in the moment. I felt every awful and devastating emotion. But on the bright side, I adored the sweet relationship blooming with Marcelo. The romance brings a much needed light to this dark and high stakes story.
Needless to say, this should go in your spooky season TBR.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.
ABOVE THE ASHES is a totally different genre than I am used to reading. I learned about the book after reading about it in my Goodreads group so I thought it would be good to leave my comfort zone. I was pleasantly surprised. I expected the paranormal story to be the dominant theme, but I enjoyed the present-day relationship between Sybil, a witch, and Marcelo, a vampire. Alexander Fernandez also included some insights into what it would be like to wake after several hundred years and join this twentieth century world. Marcelo needed to teach Sybil about all the modern conveniences we take for granted. Some humorous events resulted. Fernandez’s plot is basically the age-old struggle between good and evil, whether it’s played out between thieves and police today or in this story of vampires and witches against a menacing enemy who threatens their existence. (more to come in his next book in the trilogy). Fernandez uses many real locations and times in history to develop his story, which helps the reader identify with the characters. I enjoyed the romantic tension between Sybil and Marcelo even though the vampire’s need for blood to sustain his existence sort of turned me off. This is a book for a specific audience who enjoys reading well-developed fast action-based story lines. I recommend it for those who want to surround themselves in fantasy through the paranormal. ABOVE THE ASHES is a great way to escape into that world.
I loved how Sybil and Marcelo came from two different worlds yet shared so much in common! Although brought together for a purpose they connected so well with each other and were just what the other needed.
In Above the Ashes, Alexander Fernandez introduces Sybil Cotterill, a resilient witch who narrowly escapes the horrors of the English witch hunts, only to be thrust into the infamous Salem trials. After using her magic to cheat death, Sybil's freedom is snatched away by a mysterious force that entombs her for centuries. When she awakens in the modern world, she's driven by a thirst for vengeance. However, Marcelo, the vampire who unknowingly frees her, complicates her dark mission. As her interactions with Marcelo deepen, Sybil faces an unexpected internal battle—will she stay true to her path of destruction, or will Marcelo’s influence lead her to reconsider the darkness she’s embraced for so long?
This novel is a gripping blend of historical fiction and supernatural elements, a combination that will instantly appeal to fans of dark fantasy like myself. Fernandez's strength lies in his ability to create immersive settings, transporting the reader from the ominous streets of 17th-century Salem to the mystic landscapes of Peru. His vivid descriptions make each scene feel alive, whether you're experiencing the brutality of a witch trial or the supernatural tension that hums through the narrative. Sybil is a complex, deeply flawed character whose relentless desire for revenge feels all too human, while Marcelo brings a new layer of conflict to her journey. Their relationship is charged with emotional tension and raises the stakes on every page. Fernandez’s masterful weaving of historical events with paranormal lore grounds the supernatural in a world that feels believable, particularly with his detailed portrayal of the witch trials. These scenes are gripping, invoking genuine fear and empathy for Sybil’s plight. Her quest for vengeance is palpable, but Fernandez also leaves room for introspection, making us question whether her unyielding need for retribution is justified or if it’s simply destroying her from within. The emotional stakes are high, and as a reader, you’re torn between wanting Sybil to succeed in her quest and hoping she finds some form of redemption along the way.
At the heart of this novel are themes of survival, trust, and the thin line between vengeance and redemption. Sybil's evolution from hunted witch to powerful sorceress parallels Marcelo's own struggle with his vampire nature, giving their connection emotional depth beyond simple romance. Their shared mission to navigate a world filled with demons, magic, and betrayal keeps the tension high, but Fernandez also adds moments of humor and lightness, balancing the darker tones of the story. The pacing is spot on, keeping readers hooked from the opening page until the very end while leaving them eager for more.
Above the Ashes is a strong start to what promises to be a captivating series. Fernandez’s writing is rich with detail, and his characters are multi-dimensional, making this world of witches and vampires come alive. Fans of dark fantasy and supernatural stories will find this a must-read. It’s a book that deserves a place on your bookshelf, especially if you enjoy stories that challenge characters—and readers alike—to confront their own darkness.
Above the Ashes was a fantastic surprise of a book!
The story follows Sybil, a young witch from the late 18th century who, despite her young age, has gone through some terrible times--from persecutions in England that put her on a ship set for the American colonies, to the death of her mother, to the Salem witch trials, which bring even more tragedy upon her. It's during these events that she's put in an enchanted sleep, hidden away for 300 years until Marcelo, a vampire, finds her in modern times. Marcelo helps Sybil adapt in this new world she finds herself in, the two of them growing closer every day. But for Sybil there's one thing that burns as hot as her attraction to Marcelo: her desire for revenge against the descendants of those who've harmed her in the past. And in the background of all this, the same sorcerer who put Sybil to sleep in the past is scheming, and what he has planned may cost Sybil and Marcelo their lives.
This is the perfect book to get you into the witchy season spirit, filled with witchcraft, vampires and even demons! The attention to detail (like Sybil's use of Old English, for example) and the way the author captured the essence of the events written was my favorite thing about it. Despite this read being less dialogue driven then other books I've read in this genre, the prose was so well crafted that I was perfectly able to percieve the anxiety the witches lived during the trials, Sybil's fear, rage and grief, but also her curiosity about the new world. Those scenes with Marcelo were some of my favorites! Their relationship was so sweet, and the romance never overshadowed the plot, but enhanced it, adding emotional depth to a very high stakes story. Very excited to see how the story continues.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review. Opinions are my own.
Sometimes, a book comes along that surprises you in the best way, and Above the Ashes is exactly that kind of story. From the moment I met Sybil Cotterill, I was captivated. She’s not your typical protagonist—fierce, deeply wounded, and relentlessly driven by her past. Her thirst for revenge after the Salem witch trials and centuries of imprisonment in a tomb feels raw and entirely justified. Yet, beneath her power and determination, Sybil’s humanity shines through, making her an incredibly compelling character. Marcelo, the vampire who inadvertently frees her, is equally unforgettable. He’s not your average brooding vampire—he’s conflicted, loyal, and surprisingly easy to root for. His growing affection for Sybil, despite her destructive nature, brings a beautiful tension to the story. Their evolving relationship, shifting from wariness to an intense connection, was one of my favorite aspects. The settings are stunning, from the chilling atmosphere of Salem’s history to the lush, enigmatic Peruvian jungles. Fernandez’s vivid descriptions make every scene feel alive and immersive, pulling you into the heart of the story. What sets this book apart isn’t just the romance or the supernatural elements, but the deeper themes it explores—mercy, justice, and the heavy burden of the past. Sybil’s journey isn’t just about vengeance; it’s also about healing, and that balance adds so much depth to the narrative. If you’re a fan of dark romance, morally complex characters, and stories that keep you on edge, Above the Ashes is a must-read. I’m already eager to see what the next installment in the Blood and Hexes series has in store!
From the very first chapter set amid the Salem witch trials, Above the Ashes had me hooked. Alexander Fernandez blends historical drama with supernatural thrills, creating a story that’s both haunting and heartwarming. The premise alone is fascinating – a young witch escaping 17th-century witch hunts only to awaken in modern times alongside a vampire – and the execution lives up to it. Fernandez’s writing is vivid, engaging, and almost cinematic, pulling you deep into each setting without ever feeling lost or overwhelmed.
The characters truly shine in this book. Sybil, the resilient witch protagonist, is complex and sympathetic, carrying centuries of grief and vengeance while still showing a relatable humanity. Marcelo, the charming modern-day vampire who crosses her path, is equally compelling – loyal and conflicted. Their chemistry unfolds in a slow-burn fashion that feels authentic and earned. I loved how their relationship adds a romantic tension to the otherwise dark, suspenseful tale, providing hope. Both characters grow throughout the story, and I found myself invested in their fates.
One of the standout aspects of Above the Ashes is its atmosphere and world-building. The book transports you from the smoky fear of 1692 Salem to contemporary settings (even a detour into the lush jungles of Peru). Many scenes are described with rich detail – I could practically smell the bonfires and feel the chill of the old-world nights. Despite the rich descriptions, the pacing never suffers.
What begins as a story of escape transforms into one of discovery, as hints of deeper mythologies and buried secrets emerge. Great read!
The writer has made a great fantasy suspense plot with Sybil’s character, who was characterized by both strength and emotion as she attempted to lead a regular life alongside her family.
Constance and Sybil were living a happy life when the odd happened in their lives. The moment when Sybil was trying to save Constance was as cold as the emotions of the citizens of Salem. It was full of suspense and emotion. Fernandez’s writing brings this scene to life, making it a standout moment in the book and showing how good of a writer he is.
Sybil’s troubled mind was a result of her dark history and the murder of her fellow witches, pushing her towards a path of vengeance. What happened next was strange, yet predictable in a good way.
Marcelo, the vampire, also had a terrible past having a devil’s soul, but he was still kind and soft-hearted being a contrast to Sybil.
As the story progresses, the dynamic between Sybil and Marcelo becomes more interesting. The internal conflict experienced by Marcelo and the quest undertaken by Sybil combine to form a story that is brimming with suspense and emotion.
Amidst themes of loss and vengeance, this enthralling tale promises to ensnare readers in its gripping narrative until the very last page, leaving them yearning for more.
If you enjoy Paranormal Romance about witches and vampires, then I highly recommend Above The Ashes.
Above the Ashes kept me hooked from the very beginning. Sybil’s fear and desperation during the opening scenes felt so real, I could almost feel her heartbeat pounding alongside mine. The author has this way of pulling you into every moment, making it hard to put the book down. What really stood out to me was Sybil’s transformation. Her grow into a woman strong enough to face her enemies was inspiring and bittersweet. The love story was captivating and supernatural. The main character’s raw pain and anger made me think about how far someone could go when pushed to their limit. The contrast between the historical and modern settings was fascinating but also unsettling. Moving from the chaos of Salem’s witch trials to the vibrant, modern-day California felt like stepping into two different worlds. It was very interesting to read Sybil’s own disorientation and made me think about how she must have felt waking up in such a strange place. Fernandez’s descriptions are incredible. The smoky air of Salem to the lush jungles of Peru, every setting felt vivid and alive. It felt like I was standing there, experiencing it all. The visuals made the emotional weight of the story even stronger because it felt so real. This book stirred a lot of emotions. Anger at the injustices Sybil faced, admiration for her resilience, and hope that redemption is possible even in the darkest times. The story teaches about survival and finding strength through pain. The book is great for mature readers, who enjoy stories that are emotional, immersive, and thought-provoking!
This book opens with a strong start, diving into the life of a young witch named Sybil. Tragic and traumatic events immediately pull the reader into her world, making it impossible not to root for her. Sybil’s life takes a sudden turn when she’s put under a centuries-long magical sleep, only to awaken in the 21st century in the famous town of Salem—where she crosses paths with a vampire named Marcelo. While the scenario of placing someone from a past era into a highly modernized present isn’t new, it brings a fresh layer of comedy to the story. I found myself laughing out loud as Sybil struggled to make sense of the modern world, her reactions bringing a delightful humor to the narrative.
One of the book’s strengths is the well-balanced blend of romance and adventure. Both elements have room to breathe, complementing each other beautifully without overwhelming the story. The characters are well-developed, with the relationship between Sybil and the vampire Marcelo standing out as a highlight. Initially so different, they become more alike as the story progresses, making them both endearing in their own unique ways.
The short chapters are a bonus, making the book perfect for busy readers who want to enjoy a few pages at a time. And the ending definitely leaves you eager for the next installment in the series! Overall, this is a story I would highly recommend—full of charm, humor, and adventure.
As someone who loved Twilight and The Vampire Diaries as a teenager, reading Above the Ashes felt like coming home to a genre that stirs all my emotions in one sitting. The story follows Sybil, a witch who narrowly escapes the brutal witch hunts of the British colonies. Branded as agents of the devil, witches faced relentless persecution. After fleeing to Salem, Sybil’s luck runs out, and she’s captured and nearly executed. Using her dark powers, she escapes again but is eventually trapped for over 300 years by a mysterious enemy whose identity she doesn’t know. When a vampire named Marcelo accidentally frees her from her tomb, all hell breaks loose. Centuries of confinement have left Sybil furious and bent on vengeance, and her actions quickly spiral into harming the innocent. This creates a fascinating moral conflict: Sybil must choose between her thirst for revenge and the love she begins to feel for Marcelo. Meanwhile, Marcelo wrestles with his own demons, torn between stopping Sybil’s fury and understanding her reasons for revenge. This story is thrilling, emotional, and filled with reflections on love, anger, and the complexity of life. The tension between Marcelo and Sybil is electrifying, and their inner struggles make this tale unforgettable. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions that will stay with you for days.
From the very first chapter, the story draws you into the dark, dangerous world of Salem in 1692, where Sybil Cotterill endures the horrors of the witch hunts. Her resilience, marked by tragedy and magic, makes her a compelling protagonist. The story takes a powerful turn when Sybil’s centuries-long imprisonment is accidentally ended by Marcelo, a modern-day vampire. What follows is an emotionally charged journey where Sybil’s fury and grief clash with Marcelo’s surprising vulnerability. Their dynamic—a mix of tension, conflict, and slow-building romance—is deeply engaging. It’s perfect for fans of enemies-to-lovers tropes with an added twist of “he falls first.” The juxtaposition of Sybil’s haunting past with her struggle to navigate the modern world adds depth to the narrative. Themes of revenge and redemption are skillfully explored, challenging readers to think about justice, forgiveness, and the enduring power of love. Fernandez’s characters are complex and memorable. Sybil’s fierce determination and Marcelo’s inner battles make their connection both volatile and captivating. For fans of paranormal romance with historical elements and morally layered characters, Above the Ashes is a must-read and a promising start to an exciting trilogy.
Above the Ashes is a fantastic blend of witches, vampires, ancient legends, and romance—everything I love in a great fantasy story. The mysterious settings and intriguing characters drew me in from the start and kept me hooked throughout. The book, the first in Alexander Fernandez’s Blood and Hexes trilogy, centers on Marcelo, a modern-day vampire who accidentally frees Sybil, a witch imprisoned for 300 years after sacrificing herself during the witch hunts of 1692. Consumed by vengeance, Sybil sets out to destroy the descendants of her persecutors, while Marcelo tries to temper her wrath and protect the innocent. Amid the chaos, an undeniable attraction and a complex relationship develop between them, adding emotional depth to their conflicting goals. While the characters and plot are captivating, what truly stands out is the moral conflict the story explores. The fast-paced plot perfectly balances drama and action, and the unexpected setting in the Peruvian jungle adds a refreshing twist, offering something unique compared to more traditional supernatural tales. This book is a must-read for fans of supernatural stories. It’s a thrilling, thought-provoking, and beautifully written adventure, and I can’t wait to dive into the next installment.
My best friend recommended Above the Ashes by Alexander Fernandez, and I downloaded it. After twenty pages, I knew Alexander would be one of my favorite authors. His story follows Sybil Cotterill, a wrongfully imprisoned witch during the Salem witch trials, who, upon being freed, embarks on a journey of revenge, rediscovery, and love with Marcelo, a vampire. The story is set in vivid locations, including the Peruvian jungle, and Alexander skillfully blends historical facts with paranormal elements. His writing describes each scene with descriptive detail, and the romance and tension between Sybil and Marcelo is quite captivating. The book also poignantly critiques modern-day attitudes toward historical sites like Salem, contrasting them with the reverence deserved by such painful histories. The villain, demons, and Sybil’s profound struggles are compellingly crafted, making for a suspenseful, cinematic read. This novel is a perfect escape for fans of fantasy and supernatural romance. I recommend it to any reader who likes supernatural stories, and I look forward to the next book in the Blood and Hexes series.
Alexander Fernandez’s Above the Ashes is a thrilling start to the Blood and Hexes series, packed with twists and turns that hooked me from the first page to the last. The chapters are wonderfully paced and filled with vivid imagery that brings each scene to life. Fernandez’s writing is accessible yet compelling, with action and intrigue on every page. The characters are well-developed, their adventures gripping enough to keep me glued to the story until the very end. I especially loved how their arcs unfolded, drawing me deeper into the narrative. The unexpected romance woven into the story was enchanting, and Fernandez handled it with such nuance that it became one of my favorite parts. Themes of resilience and revenge are explored thoughtfully, adding layers of depth and making the story more than just a fantasy adventure—it’s also a reflection on human strength and morality. I highly recommend this one. It’s a powerful, unforgettable read!
The story blends supernatural suspense, romance, and revenge in an incredibly compelling way. If you love vampires, witches, or worlds filled with fantastical power, this book is a must-read. The thrill of imagining such extraordinary abilities woven into a gripping story is simply amazing. Alexander Fernandez crafts a unique and thoughtful plot that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The novel's creativity and depth shine through, with characters that are not only memorable but also beautifully developed as the story unfolds. One of the standout features of this book is how it blends historical context with fantasy. The historical elements enrich the storytelling, making the world feel authentic and immersive. The seamless weaving of past and present creates a fascinating dynamic that keeps the narrative fresh and engaging. The settings, from the dark, tense moments of the Salem witch trials to the polished modern-day supernatural world, are described so vividly they pull you in completely. I’m already eager to dive into the next installment to see where these incredible characters go next. I highly recommend Above the Ashes to anyone who loves fantasy that feels both fresh and meaningful.
The story grips you from the start, with its vivid portrayal of Sybil’s desperate escape from witch-hunting zealots, and doesn’t let go. Fernandez has a knack for blending dark, historical realism with supernatural elements, and while the combination is intriguing, it sometimes feels uneven. The gritty historical details are riveting, but the sudden shift to modern-day vampire drama felt like a different book altogether.
Sybil is an outstanding protagonist—fiercely determined and heartbreakingly human. Her evolution from a frightened teenager to a vengeful witch is mesmerizing, but at times, her leaps in power and confidence felt abrupt. Constance, on the other hand, stole my heart. Her quiet strength and selflessness balanced Sybil’s fiery resolve, making her tragic fate all the more impactful.
Fernandez’s writing is cinematic and evocative. His descriptions transport you to the cobblestone streets of 17th-century England and the smoky chaos of burning Salem. The book delivers a compelling mix of action, emotion, and atmosphere that lingers long after the final page.
The opening chapters, set in 17th-century England, are undeniably gripping. Sybil’s flight from witch-hunters and the tragic loss of her mother are so vividly written they pull you into her world of danger and despair. Fernandez captures the tension and stakes of the era with sharp, evocative prose.
The shift to the modern-day with Marcelo, a charismatic vampire navigating a polished and trendy supernatural world, adds a fresh and unexpected layer to the narrative. Marcelo’s charm and humor bring a lighter tone that contrasts with Sybil’s intense historical journey, offering moments of levity and a broader perspective. While it creates a dynamic blend of past and present, the transition from the grim realism of Salem’s witch trials to sleek, contemporary settings provides an intriguing juxtaposition that adds richness to the storytelling. The villain, Kendrick, is a standout—enigmatic, chilling, and unforgettable.
Above the Ashes is a bold, thought-provoking tale. Fans of both historical and paranormal fiction will find much to enjoy.
The internal struggle Sybil faces in Above the Ashes—between seeking revenge and embracing redemption and love—is profoundly moving. Her deep pain and anger after centuries of suffering make her thirst for revenge completely understandable. The story explores whether revenge can truly bring peace, raising thought-provoking questions about justice and closure. Sybil’s journey highlights how the past can shape the present. Her trauma drives her actions, showing how old wounds can linger and influence decisions. Yet the narrative offers hope, illustrating that while the past can’t be changed, it doesn’t have to define the future. Sybil’s chance at love and redemption is powerful, showing that healing is possible, even after immense pain. This book resonated deeply with me. Sybil’s emotional journey felt raw and relatable, making me reflect on the challenges of letting go and finding peace. It’s a story that blends fantasy with meaningful insights into human emotions, and I absolutely loved it.
Above the Ashes delivers a fantastic story brimming with fantasy, yet grounded in deeply human themes like fear, revenge, and the pull between good and evil. The characters are outstanding, each uniquely crafted and vividly brought to life. My favorite is Marcelo, whose duality reveals a mix of emotions we all experience—conflict, love, and moral complexity. His struggle with the love of his life is both heartbreaking and relatable, showing how love can transform us in profound ways. The focus on witch hunts is another highlight. It cleverly draws from history, transporting us to a time when fear of the unknown bred cruelty and suspicion. Fernandez’s writing is fluid and engaging, with rich storytelling and exceptional character development. The blend of emotion, history, and fantasy kept me hooked. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a story that dances between the real and the fantastical. It’s truly memorable.
Alexander Fernandez has created an incredible blend of historical fiction and supernatural romance with Above the Ashes. The descriptive writing truly immerses you in the story, transporting you seamlessly between the 17th century and modern-day Peru. The combination of supernatural events, historical settings, romance, and suspense makes the narrative vivid and engaging. The characters are outstanding, with Marcelo’s internal conflict between protecting humanity and his darker nature standing out as particularly compelling. Similarly, Sybil’s struggle between forgiveness and vengeance adds emotional depth and relatability, making her journey all the more powerful. If you’re looking for a book with immersive storytelling, complex characters, and a story that evokes a range of emotions while blending fiction, history, and romance, this is a must-read. You’ll be hooked until the end and, like me, eager to dive into the next installments of the Blood and Hexes Trilogy.
The character development is one of the book’s strongest points. Each chapter reveals more about the main characters, their internal struggles, and their strengths. The interactions between witches, vampires, and demons are imaginative, and Fernandez weaves their relationships seamlessly, highlighting their unique traits. The settings are another standout. The detailed descriptions transport you straight to the eerie streets of England or the mystical lands of Peru. The vivid imagery builds a suspenseful, sometimes chilling atmosphere that makes you feel as if you’re living the story. If you love trilogies with mystery, suspense, and a captivating narrative, I highly recommend this book. It’s a thrilling start to the Blood and Hexes series and will leave you eager for the next installment. My sister and I both loved it, and I’m sure you will too!
Above the Ashes is the first captivating novel of the Blood and Hexes series by Alexander Fernandez. This narrative caught my attention from the very beginning. It is a fabulous blend of real fact and supernatural elements. I enjoyed many aspects of this book, especially the blend of mythologies. Moreover, I found quite interesting how the author added fictional aspects to real ones. The literary aspect is a point to highlight as well. I totally pictured every scene in my mind thanks to the detailed descriptions present in every scene. Following the lines, I could see myself in the field due to the vocabulary chosen by Fernandez. I will recommend this book and I am willing to read the next volumes as well.
Above the Ashes is an exciting and well-written paranormal romance story that blends the past with the present and reality with fantasy. It follows Sybil, a young witch, on her escape from the England witch hunts only to find herself in the village of Salem during its own period of witch hysteria. The story continues into the present day, where we meet Marcelo, a charming modern-day vampire, and the characters come together for a touching romance that complements this tale of revenge and grief. The characters are complex and likable, and their backgrounds are explored as they progress on their journey. The various settings and time periods feel well-researched, making it easy to become immersed while reading. I'd certainly recommend to fans of paranormal romance!
A vampire and a witch from the 17th century walk into a 21st century clothing store and embark on a journey where a thirst for revenge could only be really quenched by the power of love. In a fantasy world where witches and vampires really exist, the two main characters of Sybil and Marcelo make an interesting team. Sybil is from the Salem witch trials era where she was put into hibernation for over three hundred years by a mysterious man named Kincaid. While Marcelo is a Spanish conquistador who was turned into a vampire hundreds of years ago. Both have known the Americas in the colonial days but Marcelo had watched it grow while Sybil is a fish out of water.
What I really loved about this novel by Alexander Fernandez was how the stakes kept rising as the story progressed.
