A young woman suddenly wakes beneath the surface of a sacred pond. Liaden remembers little…but she knows she died. She’s convinced she was a human sacrifice, rejected by the gods and returned to life with a terrible curse. But the gods have a greater purpose for her, if only she’s willing to accept it.

The Mirren are unstoppable, crushing all in their path and enslaving the people they conquer.Their empire spans most of the mainland. Now they’ve set their sights on a green jewel, a lonely isle in a stormy sea; land of ancient forests, Ice Age beasts, and tribal kingdoms.

Now Liaden, with the help of a disgraced king, a renowned warrior, and a cynical druid, must learn what the gods require of her. It’s more than she can imagine–but may be the only way for her to find a place in a world that fears and hates her.

This is an absolutely stunning fantasy rooted in the historical Celts (and Romans) which is full of vivid description, beautiful detail and incredible heart.

Patricia Correll is an outstanding writer. Moreover, she has brought something truly powerful to this genre which is often absent - there is a lead character with a disability, and an ancillary character with one too. The very real challenges of these disabilities are woven into the stories of these characters. It is a breath of fresh air.

The amount of nature in this book, too, is overwhelmingly beautiful. Sights, sounds and smells are described vividly so as to immerse the reader in the mystical, brutal and rich world Correll has created. I was often reminded of Tolkien's works while reading this, from the depth of culture and history and nature involved. It is less grand than Tolkien's works, but more real.

The inclusion of Gelert (a stag-hound), and his prominence within the story, feels like an especially nice touch which only adds to the poignancy of the characters and the power of the tale.

If you like fantasy, especially that which is rooted in real history, this is an absolute must-read!

Absolute masterpiece

Patricia Correll has woven such an epic tale of redemption, resilience, and strength that you do not want to miss this book. In her typical fluid prose, she will transport you to a world where all hope seems lost, but isn't. Beautifully written, excellent plot, and character development propels this book to a solid five stars. Definitely recommend.

Grand novel. I am terrible at reviews as I find I write spoilers. Not that anyone reads my reviews. Just know this is a good writer and to watch for more from them.

Author Patricia Correll’s newest novel, The Woven Crown, deviates from her previous writing in that it is set in fantasy Iron Age Britain. At least three of her earlier works (including a magnificent novel, The Unseen World,) were set in fantasy medieval Japan. However, much else remains the same—her strong and unique writing style, her ability to develop characters so clearly they walk off the pages, and her skill for writing compelling action. This plot begins with a young executed woman who finds herself mysteriously alive. Confused, frightened and vulnerable to the elements, this woman named Liaden ponders her fate's twist and its meaning. Why, she wonders, did the gods reject her? As she struggles with her return to the living, she is stumbled upon by a man named Fergel and his dog, Gelert, and thus begins a journey of love and friendship.
Many characters populate this novel and almost all hope to defeat the evil ruler, Balor, who is attempting to subjugate all groups in the land. Battles threaten and unlikely alliances form. Throughout it all, Liaden seeks her own answers as she journeys with the others through the crisis of impending war. Fergel and Gelert are ever-present, protecting and guiding her toward her destiny. But Fergel also has personal demons to fight, and a sister who has searched the island relentlessly, determined to kill him. His sister is a warrior, a woman of internal and external strengths. Liaden does not view herself as having these gifts, but the females in Ms. Correll’s stories never disappoint.
As is true in all of this author’s works, what makes The Woven Crown exceptional is her ability to breathe life into a sturdy backbone of complicated friendships and love. Love that assumes many forms. (Beta reader)
