DESCRIPTION
Today, technology is used to shift, sway and change attitudes and behavior. This creates amazing opportunities and challenges for designers. If we want to create products, services, websites or apps that have the power to educate people so they may live better lives, or help to reduce the time people take to do certain tasks, we first need an understanding of how these people think and work - what makes them "tick." The premise of this book is the need to understand how people "behave"; their habits, motivators and drivers, as a critical way to better understand what a great customer experience for your audience looks like, facilitating better design decisions. The book leads readers from understanding this behavior, to extracting customer insights that can launch them into the design of something that makes a difference to people's lives - all presented in a fun, practical and non-academic way.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jodie Moule is co-founder & director of Symplicit, an experience design consultancy based in Australia that focuses on research, strategy and design services. Her background as a psychologist means understanding human behavior is a core philosophy, and she has a passion for helping clients to see their brands through the eyes of their customers. She is also interested in how to combine this understanding of human behavior with good design thinking, to influence the way businesses approach the design of their products, systems and processes.
I never really thought of myself involved in much UX work, even as a product manager. But, as I have aged in my role, I find myself doing more UX...not UI. My processes and patterns are pretty well set, but, I find it helpful to read up on these kinds of things to ensure I am not missing any new ideas in the area and, more importantly, reminding myself of useful ideas that I have gotten lazy about doing day to day.
This book is full of the latter, not so much the former.
So, as long as you walk in to this book think that it will spend a lot of time on how to get the right kind of user experience, then you will be fine. I like the book and think that it is well written and complete. Really, the only area that I think could have been detailed further is around Information architecture. But, now that I think about it, I believe that is a book that I am going to write. It bugs me that IA seems to be a learned science rather than an academic science.
Back to the book. It seems to be web heavy, not client/server software heavy. So, again, bear that in mind as you read it.
But, this book made me stop midway through each chapter to ponder what we had covered. That is alway a good sign in my opinion.
This was the first book I've read on the topic of UX design. It was a great introduction, and I loved following the design process from start to finish of a real application!
It's a killer book about being an User Experience Designer. Jodie have done a marvelous job by writing this book. Anyone want's to know about end to end User Experience steps and do's don't do's, just read this book. Every bit of User Experience for a product is explained easily and throughly in this book. The author just didn't described what to do or what not to do. She developed a real recipe application and guided the reader through the process she follows to develop that application. A full UX life cycle of a real application.
Anyone wants to be User Experience Designer, must read this book.
- Liked the idea of a real-life case study to illustrate the UX process - Read a lot like a textbook though, and coloured images would have livened it up - Overkill on the "wow" factor - Generally a good guide for those wanting an overview of the UX process - Conversational tone - Overall, a bit dry but good introduction to different aspects of UX
Good for students or people new to the field of UX Design. Was a pleasant and simple read to get a little more insight into how other designers tackle tasks, but if you've been doing UX for a while, I'd recommend skipping it.
This is a good introductory book for designers, researchers and developers who are new to UX. It covers everything through the use of an app case-study. Another hit from Sitepoint!
I learned a lot of basic/core concepts and have a great time while doing so. Highly recommended. It also describes a real UX process for a recipe app (thecookapp.com).
Thje author shows you the process, from start to finish, of creating an app. This can be applied to web design too, of course. A great book, possibly the best one I've read about UX research.
Great, easy intro book for the UX newbie. Walked me right through my project and helped point out several things I'd never considered that will save me time and frustration later.
