Ambrose Bierce was perhaps the most enigmatic author in American history. Published in 1929, this biography of Ambrose Bierce, one of several, is comprehensively researched; unlike other Bierce biographers, McWilliams had complete access to Bierce's works and letters. Furthermore, McWilliams had direct personal contact with numerous contemporaries of Bierce, including his relatives and business associates. Thus, the breadth of material to draw from and the first hand knowledge lends credibility to many of the perspectives of Bierce's life discussed by McWilliams. This is something absent in other Bierce biographies.

Bierce, today known mostly for his Devil's Dictionary and the short story Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, was a Civil War solider that served in the 9th Regiment Indiana Infantry - widely known as the "Bloody Ninth" due to the fact that this regiment fought in many of the major battles of the Civil War. He rose to the rank of Major and was tasked as a battleground map maker (topographer) prior to battle engagement. After the war, he traveled overland to California with a military unit and then became engaged in journalism. His wit and satire, especially as it was pointed toward politicians, made him a favorite of newspapers across the country. Later, he would write numerous short stories - often concerning war, death, and ghosts.

McPherson's biography covers Bierce's entire lifespan - birth to a mysterious and "unknown" death in Mexico - but mostly focuses on Bierce and a journalist and mentor to other authors. If you are a fan of Bierce, then this biography is worth reading since it puts considerable context into the framework and topics of his writing. This is certainly one of the more interesting biographies that I have ever read, largely due to the fact that Bierce himself was a particularly interesting individual.
