Rachel McKenzie is back in this gripping mystery thriller, The Highland Dead, the second book in the series bearing her name! Rachel is back in her hometown; this time she will be searching for her friend's diabolical killer! When another person is murdered, Rachel is determined to catch the killer no matter what!
As with the first book in the series, The Highland Dead takes place in the Scottish Highlands. Rachel’s determination and drive to catch killers began after her father was jailed for murdering Rachel's mother. She is a strong investigator with a lot of pain and trauma in her own life. I admired her gumption, her strength, and vulnerability. She is an intelligent investigator who throws herself into every case.
I love trying to do my own super sleuthing while reading to solve whodunit. I did not even come close to solving the killer’s identity in this book. Morag Pringle did a great job of pulling the wool over my eyes. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the tension, the vivid descriptions, the characters, the mounting danger, the mystery and the twists in this book.
I look forward to the next book in the gripping series.

This is an entertaining, well-written, fast paced murder mystery novel. It has an engaging, likable, strong and intelligent female protagonist, murder, mystery, suspense, twists and turns, and a unexpected conclusion. This is the second entry in Morag Pringle's fabulous Rachel McKenzie Mystery series, and it can be read as a stand alone, but it is even better when it is read in order. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator, Ms. Helen McAlpine, has a lovely voice and does an outstanding job voicing the characters. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in this series with great anticipation.

The Highland Dead is a second book featuring Rachel McKenzie and I hope not the last one as those books are so good.
In The Highland Dead Rachel gets thrown into another dark and gruesome case. A victim, one of her old school friends, is yet another person in her life to meet such tragic end. Rachel not only faces the race to find the brutal killer but is also trying to unravel mystery behind her mother's demise.
Cleverly plotted and well paced, The Highland Dead is a riveting story and I highly recommend it.

Друга книга в серії динамічніша за подіями, розслідуванням, персонажами, але й сподобалася через це набагато менше. Як на мене забагато було подій, персонажів і їх проблематики. Але продовження читатиму. Цікаво, побачити розв'язку головної героїні з батьками. Ще з першої книги ми дізнались, що мати головної героїні пішла з родини коли та була ще підліткою. А через 4 роки знайшли її тіло, яке десь всі ці 4 роки і лежало.

More excitement for death investigating fiscal Rachel in the second of Morag Pringle's Inverness based series. Rachel is just back from Uist when the death of a school friend is brought to her attention. This is followed by several more suspicious deaths of women all linked to another school friend who is a doctor at the local hospital. There follows a fast moving hunt for the killer of the women with Rachel 'helping' and pushing the police on to solve the murders. I have to admit I was clueless as to the murderer right until the end so well done Morag! A very enjoyable read. Looking forward to the next in the series.

If anything, this book was even better than book 1, The Liar's Bones! Rachel discovers, through her work at the Scottish Fatalities Investgation Unit, that a friend who'd been kind to her during her school years, had died. Again, something about the case doesn't quite add up and Rachel starts digging into it. As more murders occur, she and Detective Dutoit (from the previous book), have their work cut out for them trying to figure out who is doing this. I didn't work it out at all until it was revealed! Rachel is also digging into her mother's murder on the side and there are some interesting developments on that front too. A very well written, fast paced and edge-of-your -seat mystery. Brilliant.

What an enjoyable read! Rachel McKenzie just can't leave a stone unturned on her mission to seek justice for murder victims and their family or friends.
You are left constantly guessing right through to the end on who the killer could be and my gosh what a character Mags is!
If you enjoy your murder mystery TV shows and crime thriller books this is definitely a series you will enjoy.

"The Highland Dead" by Morag Pringle is a gripping 4-star read! Rachel McKenzie from the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit returns in another tangle of murder and mystery. Rachel once again persuades her superior and Police Scotland to investigate a death previously ruled accidental. Then another death occurs, and Rachel is convinced it's the work of someone sinister who needs to be stopped. Selena is back with a new job, working alongside Rachel to get to the bottom of things.
I enjoyed this book; it was well-written and, just like the first, had plenty of unique phrases that I really appreciated. We get to go back in time a bit and learn more about the death of Rachel’s mother and what possibly led to her murder. While there are some points where the story doesn’t move forward quickly, these moments provide depth and keep you wanting more. There are at least three different people you will suspect as the killer, and the author does a great job keeping you guessing. I can’t wait to read the third book in this series.

I love books set in Scotland and even better if they are mysteries/thrillers. I have not read the first book in the series but it really didn’t make much of a difference to the story line. The pace of the book as good and enough of an ongoing story line to keep me looking forward to the next one. Kept me guessing until the revelation of who the killer really was. It was difficult to put down as it neared the end. The characters were written well without too much revealed about the main character to leave me guessing and looking forward to learning more about her as the series unfolds. Now I’m off to read the first book in the series and I eagerly wait for the next one.

A change of setting but still in the Scottish Highlands. Good and exciting plot and the main characters are the same with realistic minor characters introduced. Still the mystery of Rachel's parents exists and looking forward to the 3rd instalment for things moving forward.

Unlike the first book, which richly depicted the highland islands, "The Highland Death" is set in Inverness. While the location doesn't provide the same vivid highland scenery, the shift in setting does not detract from the story's intensity. The book begins with a gripping murder that spirals into a riveting serial killer plot, making it a true "whodunit" mystery.
The character development in this book is exceptional. The complexity of the characters, combined with the multitude of suspects and motives, keeps the reader guessing until the very end. However, it is important to note that the book touches on sensitive themes such as sex work, drug abuse, domestic violence, and medical malpractice, which might be triggering for some readers.
One aspect that stands out is the gradual unveiling of Rachel’s backstory, particularly regarding her mother's murder. This element adds depth to Rachel's character and her relentless pursuit of justice, though it leaves the reader yearning for more details.

Morag Pringle is a new author to me but I will definitely look out for her books in the future, my only disappointment was soon realised that this was the second book in a series so I had missed the backgrounds of the main characters, having said that, it didn't defer from my enjoyment.
Rachel McKenzie works for the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit or "death unit" as it was usually called, little did Rachel know that a phone call to the unit on her first day back was to trigger a chain of events that would put her life and the lives of many others in danger.
Dr Kirsty Burns didn't believe that the death of her friend, nurse Gillian Roberts, was due to natural causes, when Rachel realised that she knew both Kirsty and Gillian from school and that Gillian had been there for her more than once she agreed to look into it.
Rachel's life hadn't been a bed of roses, her father was in jail for murdering her mother, Rachel was a bit of a loner.
This book is fast paced, the body count escalates and it takes all Rachel's skills to work out how the deaths of prostitute, a school teacher and a nurse are connected, but connected they are.
The suspects are many and the rumour mill is running wild, lives are in danger........who will be next.
I love the author's descriptive powers, the beautiful Scottish mountains and glens, I love the characters, I love Mags, Rachel's elderly, shoot from the hip, prostitute next door neighbour.
I admit that I had no idea how this story would end so well done Morag, I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

After I enjoyed reading the Liar's bones, the first episode in the Rachel McKenzie series I was quick to request the second book in this series from Netgalley. Though this one lacked a bit the scenic setting on an isolated island that I loved about the first book set on Uist in the outer Hebrides the book is an excellent story and I loved reading it.
Although i've been to Inverness ones I don't recall much of the city, except the tourist highlights Therefore it was nice to learn a bit more about the other "face" of the city.
In this book Rachel dives into the deaths of a couple of young women, who all of them seem to have a link to a (former) friend of Rachels from university. Because at face value Dr Kirsty Burns seems to be the only linking pin between all the victims she soon gets blamed for everything that goes wrong in the hospital and is every-bodies most likely culprit for the murders. Everybody but Rachel, who stands by her friend and urges everybody to keep digging deeper until the real murderer is found.
The author keeps you on the point of your seat and devouring the book until the last page. Great book with a lot of suspense en interesting plot twists and supporting characters. Luckily Rachel McKenzie also seems to have cleared up her act and has dropped the sometimes very naive behaviour she displayed in the first book. She also makes some headway with the investigation into the murder of her own mother (by her father) but not as much as I had hoped. Well, makes me look even more forward towards the next book.

Rachel McKenzie is a lawyer working in the Scottish ‘Death Unit’ as it’s know. Her job is to decide if any fatal incident file that comes into their office requires further police or forensic investigations. When she takes a call from an old school friend, she is drawn into a case that is much too close to home . She gets a feeling that this case is not nearly as straight forward as it seems, and is pulled further into it all when her next door neighbour, Mags, asks her for help too.
Rachel’s own background means she can empathise with the distraught friends and relatives who want answers and someone to stand up for their loved ones. She is intuitive and not afraid to step on colleagues toes when she believes there is something that needs looking into. This is the second book in the series, and am glad I read The Liars Bones first, as it really helps with the background to Rachel’s own life and how and why she is so determined to stand up for the victims, even if she puts herself in harms way.
I love the neighbour, Mags, who is fiercely protective of her ‘girls’, and Inspector Du Toit and Selena, who she worked with one her last case. I really liked the first book in this series, so I was thrilled to be able to receive this ARC. I am always hesitant with the second book in a series because I hope it lives up to its predecessor. This lived up to my expectations!
In this latest installment, Rachel McKenzie is still working for the "Death Unit". A friend from the past, Dr. Kirsty Burns, has concerns that the death of her best friend was not accidental. Rachel decides to look into the case. As she investigates, she discovers a connection to Dr. Burns hospital and the murders of sex workers and a teacher.
There are a lot of characters in this case, but they all are connected to the hospital. The investigation is greatly paced, and the discoveries and clues start piling up. I will say that there are a few "red herrings", so I didn't quite figure it out until the end!
This is a well written mystery, with many turns and twists. The solution is well thought out and makes sense. The death of Rachel's mom is addressed and looked into a little more in this novel. New information comes to light about her mother's job and life.
I really like Rachel, Serena, Mags, and the other characters. I felt this was intelligently written and completely engaging! Highly recommend to those who like a darker story, police procedurals, and slow and increasing development of characters and relationships!
I cannot wait to see where the next story will take us- hopefully solving the death of Rachel's mom!

The Highland Dead by Morag Pringle
When I picked up this book I was immediately drawn in by the photo of the Glenfinnan viaduct and the title including the word highland. As a lover of anything Scottish and with my recent trip to Glenfinnan and the Scottish highlands I really wanted to read this book and it did not disappoint. The setting in and around Inverness and a gripping murder mystery with a dash of highland accents and a likeable female main character made this quite an enjoyable read. Even with me starting with the second book in the Rachel McKenzie Mysteries did not become an issue as I have yet to read the first (you can bet good money that I’ll be doing that right away), because the cases or mysteries in this book were current to the plot and I do not feel like I missed out on much. The only thing that would be nice to know, but not vital for the story is the personal aspect of our fierce heroine and the people she interacts with and their history, but again, not necessarily a must to read this book.
All in all a very good thriller/murder mystery and I am super excited for more.
Perfect for readers who love psychological thrillers or authors such as Cara Hunter, Lucy Foley and Lisa Jewell

Oh my stars. This book has held me captive for the past 24 hours, to the point that I read every time I got a break. It was heart-racing, page turning and chilling.
Rachel McKenzie works for the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit. When they are called to the scene of a woman who died in her home, Rachel is appalled to realize that she knew the victim. At first it appears that the death was an accident. Upon Rachel's insistence that they do further tests, they determine this was, in fact, a murder. As Rachel digs deeper she realizes that there are several deaths that are eerily similar to this one that were ruled accidental overdoses. This is a killer with the skills to fool law enforcement.
As I fell face first into this book, I was a little creeped out. I really liked the character of Rachel. She is laser-focused on the task before her, and she sees things that others do not see. She has great observation skills, and she is relentless in her pursuit of justice for these poor souls. I enjoy trying to solve mysteries like this one. However, I was completed blown away by this twisty, engrossing mystery with an ending I never saw coming. Whew, I need a break now.

I really enjoyed Book One in this series, The Liar’s Bones, so I was thrilled to get a copy of the second book.
Rachel McKenzie will do anything to help solve cases. When one of her good friends is found killed in her own home, she is determined to find out who did it. As other bodies of sex workers are found, Rachel will stop at nothing to find out the link between these women and her friend, Gillian. Will Rachel be able to solve these murders before getting hurt herself?
This was another good book in this new series. Although Rachel is a lawyer, and not a policewoman, her crime-solving skills are spot on. Everyone is under suspicion – including some hospital workers. Throw in a good friend of hers who is a doctor at that hospital and her aging prostitute neighbor, Mags, and Rachel has a group of crime solvers who will not be stopped until the murderer is uncovered.
Will anxiously await book number three in this series!

Rachel has returned to her hometown of Inverness following her harrowing case in the Outer Hebrides. As a lawyer working for Fiscal, she helps to decide which death cases need further investigation. Rachel’s friend Dr Kirstie Burns finds the dead body of her friend Gillian Robertson and convinces Rachel to help her find out the cause of death, since she is not convinced that Gillian died by bleeding out from a miscarriage, as the police had decided. Other young women’s bodies start to turn up and much of the evidence seems to point to Kirstie. Tension mounts as Rachel and her coworker Selena search for answers. This story becomes a real nail-biter about half way through the book. There are several suspects, but Rachel’s gut tells her that there’s something more that is eluding them. As the pieces finally start to fall into place, both Kirstie and Rachel find themselves in real danger. Great suspense and well-written characters. I recommend this book to those who love mystery and suspense.

This book is about Rachel McKenzie who works for the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit or "death unit". Since it's the second book, she is recovering from the past and back on to solve more cases. This one focuses on a group of women from different walks of life and are all connected to the hospital in some way. When women start turning up dead, at first there doesn't seem to be a connection and as the book continues, all the odds and ends are tied up. The killer and the reasons behind his murders is sadly tragic and you do feel bad for them. The book has a lot of strong female characters which is always a bonus. My biggest struggle was that even though the book was in English, there were a lot of Scottish words/terms/phrases that I struggled to understand. There was also a lot of story telling and I wish the book was a bit more fast paced. Over all a fun read and I look forward to the next one.

While this is the second book in this series, it can be read as a standalone.
I found that while this story along with the first one is a bit slower paced at least until we get to the end, the plot and the characters are where this story really shines. We learn more about Rachel and her past as this story deals with a couple of girls she went to school with. I like that Rachel follows her instincts when it comes to the cases she investigating, even though investigating isn't exactly her job. She's just supposed to determine whether or not a death needs to be investigated or not.
The characters are more interesting, especially Rachel's neighbor Mags, and I loved that we get to see Selina again. This mystery kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, and I didn't figure out who the killer was until it was revealed.
I will definitely be keeping up with this series and I can't wait to see what kind of case Rachel will be solving next

Rachel McKenzie is in the grip of grief for one friend when another friend reaches out in need. The publisher's blurb is a good hook but doesn't convey how diabolical this tale is or how crammed with misdirection! I was blindsided when finding out the who and why of the killer.
Rachel is a death investigating fiscal (what US calls a prosecution lawyer) but has to do her own verification of police evidence and conclusions rather than affording a special investigator for the task. Police Scotland is the overarching collection of federal agencies.
There are decided differences in naming things related to hospitals, but those of us who work in health care have no difficulties in knowing the "translations". Another excellent story in series!

I had some difficulty in the first third of the book in keeping up with all of the characters and if/how they were interconnected. Once that came together for me, I sped through the rest of the book.
Rachel happens upon a case that turns out to be someone she knew in school, which also connects her to another classmate. Once it’s discovered that it was indeed a suspicious death, Rachel will stop at nothing to put the killer to justice. This story blindsided me with the ending! I thought I had things worked out about halfway through, but nope! This would have been five stars had the character development and connections been easier to follow at the start. I’m ready to see what happens next in Rachel’s life!

Rachel McKenzie returns with another thrilling case. When women start dying, under mostly clear circumstances, it seems to be a open and close death investigation. But when one of her neighbors, and a doctor both voice concerns about two different deaths, Rachel starts asking questions. When all roads lead back to a medical professional, Rachel isn't so sure. There could be someone trying to frame this person, but why? The more questions she asks, the more things seem to start heating up, and it might just cost her more than her job.
I really enjoyed this read! As a lawyer, Rachel looks into deaths that are deemed suspicious, but now and then her instincts tell her something else is going on. This one had me on the edge of my seat more than once, reading as fast as I could, trying to figure out what was happening.

This is my first read by this author so obviously I've not read book 1. This story stands alone and there though I'd like to know more about Rachel so I'll go find the previous story.
This story was set in Scotland, I referred to the referencing tool on my kindle a couple of times.
A friend of Rachel's is the latest victim in a series of women dying. Rachel sees a pattern and is determined to flush out the killer.
There is also the background of her father's incarceration for the murder of her mother. Was it as straight forward as it seems or is he protecting her from someone. Seems a lot more to this story to come.
The mounting danger towards the end had me glued to my kindle reading faster. I had no clue until it was revealed who the killer was.
Really good story, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The second in the series about the main character, Rachel a fiscal in the Scottish Highlands. A twisty plot where there were quite a few possible killers and where you start questioning everyone. Set mostly in the local hospital, I thought that although the treatments and medication was well researched, the working practices of different professionals did not quite ring true (I work in a hospital). The characterizations are Ok , though perhaps Selena does not seem mature enough to be a police officer.
Apart from that, the book is interesting and the crimes complicated. Regarding Rachel's own past, there are still questions about what happened to her mother and about why her father is in jail though there is more about what happened as a sidestory in this book. Definately a series I want to read more of !

This was a compulsive, twisty murder mystery in which I could not predict the killer. While there is some police procedural, the focus is more from a lawyer’s POV since that is Rachel’s profession. I really liked her compassion and tenacity as she ignores orders to “Stay in her own lane” and perseveres to find the real answers. There were a lot of characters but everyone was well fleshed out so there was no confusion. This is book 2 of a series (I have not read book 1) so I did feel I was missing some of Rachel’s personal history. Some of this is revealed as the story evolves which hints at some dramatic drama with Rachel’s family. I look forward to reading more from this series.

Rather than being a police procedural, this novel is from Rachel's lawyer POV.
Despite the many characters, it was easy to keep track and follow the story as they were all unique and fleshed out that you could connect with them all!
This book was written cleverly, and has me turning the pages as quickly as possible to find out what happens next.
Bonus points for being set in the highlands where I grew up before moving to Australia! It was nostalgic reading of places I was very familiar with!
