An encyclopedic treatise on all aspects of the environment of the island, from physical and biological to the human and cultural. Covers all the different habitats in detail, describing flora and fauna from historical to present. There are also heaps of insightful (albeit quite outdated data by now) tables and figures accompanying this thick volume. I wish there were more such books on other countries as it is very handy as a go-to reference guide for anything related to the natural history of a particular place.
