In the world of fairies, seventeen-year-old Rue's days consist of farming, cleaning, selling her crops at the local market or in the human world above, while her stepmother and stepsister attend dances, parties and any society event her stepmother manages to get invited to. Rue never cared for dances and never wished to go to one until Andrew, one of the Prince's friends, invites her to a ball that Rue's stepmother doesn't want her to attend.
This short story is a retelling of Ella Enchanted, which is a retelling of Cinderella. Too bad it fell short.
At the beginning the reader meets a lot of names and it's difficult to guess what role they play. Then the evil stepmother steps in - without an evil stepsister - and makes everything confusing. if the reader wasn't familiar with Cinderella, s/he wouldn't be able to understand what's going on with the family. I mean, I like to start every book with a blank slate but with this short story it wasn't possible because the author wasn't able to introduce properly all of her characters.
The main character is your regular fairy who's trying to do everything she could to save her dad's residence, while her stepmother is selling everything she could to maintain a high life standard. The love interest really has no personality and it's pretty obvious who he is. SIGH!
The language was bit weird every now and then but I don't know what it depends on.
I'm not sure I'll read more works by this author because she failed to impress me. Yeah, it took me three days to finish 37 pages...
