Uri is dying. Time is running out. And Orinthia is out of options.
Hunted by enemies on both sides of the law, Orinthia and her crew race toward Elendoras, the only place that might hold the key to saving her brother. But the one person who could help is the man she never wanted to see their father.
She swore she’d never go back. Now, she doesn’t have a choice.
With bounties on their heads and a new crewmate Orinthia doesn’t trust, tensions run high aboard Freya. But if they’re going to survive, and save Uri, they’ll have to figure out who they are in a galaxy that’s already turned its back on them.
Trust is fragile. Family is complicated. And no one makes it out unchanged. Book 2 of the Space Marauder Chronicles.
Lorena Para (1990-present) was born in Southern California. Her parents moved to The Land of Enchantment (New Mexico, USA) in 1993, where she lived until high school graduation in 2008. She moved back to California and attended college. While working on her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, she met her husband. They live together in a small mountain town tucked away between Los Angeles and Fresno, along with their two children, dogs, chickens, ducks, and hobby farm. Lorena is a fan of writing science fiction, dystopian, and post-apocalyptic genres. She finished her first self-published series in 2020 and is currently working on an expansive space pirate series. When she isn’t writing, she is running a small handmade sticker business, homeschooling, her daughter, playing video games, and consuming all Star Wars media.
The story picks up right where it left off, with Orinthia ("Thia"), Uri, and her newly found family—Kos and Thrutt—aboard Freya, hiding from bounty hunters as they make their way to Elendoras. The narrative is action-packed, filled with intense battles, thrilling space chases, and unexpected plot reveals. An aspect I love in this book is the growing relationships between Thia and her new family. Thrutt’s fatherly care for her is heartwarming, and the subtle tension between Thia and Kos is exciting to watch grow. With the unique world-building that Para does so well, this space odyssey quickly became a captivating favorite. There are so many good moments, but one of my favorites is: “You’ve pulled me back from my darkest moments and helped me find the way out. You are not my crutch, but rather a respite from the battle.” If you love a good sci-fi, space odyssey with elements similar to Firefly, I recommend this read!
A typical space opera and second book in the series. The characters and their relationships took center stage leaving the plot in a secondary position. Easy to read with only few editing issues.
The adventure continues! Orinthia and her new crew figure out their found family dynamic, they learn more about each other's pasts and meet some old enemies and friends. I loved Orinthia's frustration at being sent on one too many side quests, and the little tidbits of worldbuilding about Thrutt's people. This book is better written than the first one, but there were still some pacing issues and plot holes, but nothing major. Overall, a fun read!
