Stolen top secret technology, and Jessie's dogs are in desperate pursuit of the theives who took it.It's March in the Bitterroots—still winter—and Jessie and Landon are on their way home from their honeymoon when an HSI special agent and U.S. Marshals jerk Landon out of the car and whisk him off in a helicopter. From there, a crisis of national security proportions pits Sheriff Landon Reid against the Department of Homeland Security, with the FBI's regional director, Special-Agent-in-Charge Andy Newsome, stuck in the middle after a very advanced organoid intelligence—an experimental biocomputer using lab-grown human brain tissue infused with AI—is stolen from the DARPA lab out of Twin Falls, Idaho …and its signal emanates from somewhere in Bitterroot County. They just can't find it. But maybe Jessie's dogs can.

The story of a woman and her beloved pack of search dogs who, when asked to, try to find the improbable against impossible odds.

NOTE FROM AUTHOR TO It says release date July, but I'm hoping to have it done and dusted by the end of May for you, and, yes, it's a nail-biter of a story ...at least I think so.

Easy Reading

I enjoy each of Ms Keur’s books in this series. I love animals of all kinds and I also love to read mysteries, so these books are much fun for me. They are light mysteries with virtually no graphic violence, so they can be a relief to read when I want to just be entertained. The characters are pretty believable and of course, the scenery is beautiful. If you read enough violence in the news, maybe you will enjoy these books as much as I do.

This series just keeps getting better and it was already great! Love the relationships of the "Wonder Mutts" and their humans. The dogs are intelligent, highly trained and truly amazing. The main characters, Jessie Anderson (Search and Rescue) and Sheriff Landon Reid, are perfect together and their marriage only enhances their strengths. The mystery presented in this book was particularly engrossing, thoughtful and tricky. All the characters are very likeable and work together brilliantly. I highly recommend this series starting at the first book. It's a winner!

Excellent series

Jessie and Landon Return from their honeymoon and find the county full of homeland security, u.s. marshals, and FBI agents. Dogs are at work in London's county. It takes all t.he SAR teams, Anderson k9 trainers, all the county law enforcement, and judge Paris to solve the mystery and capture the spys. Love this series. Highly recommended.

ten stars! who was the HIS as-hole that just grabbed my new husband and ordered him in the Helicopter

Jessie and Landon were on last legs of their trip home from the dream Hawaiian honeymoon when they were pulled over by Homeland Security officers that wouldn’t even Identify themselves other than state thats who they were. They then took Landon with them in the helicopter marked Homeland Security leaving Jessie and the dogs to finish the drive home by herself. So she called dispatch to find out what was going on then called her Dad because she needed his help to get home faster. She needed the rest of her dogs and her uniform so she could join her husband at work. The office had been almost taken over by Homeland Security and they needed Landon to sign off for their activities. She knew her husband enough that they were in for a shock. Jessie wanted to be there for her husband as he fought for what was legal and right for those that were under his care. This involves all kind of government and state people. FBI, HOMELAND SECURITY, MARSHALS, GOVERNORS, AIR FORCE GENERALS, AND TRAITORS, WITH MISSING TECH BEING AT THE START OF IT.

Her good, GOOD dogs!

Loved it. This book further demonstrates Landon's development into a more relaxed character, one who is able to interact with others. He now not only realizes he has friends, he can keep and maintain those relationships. But the biggest development is his openness with Jessie. They have just married and returned from the honeymoon, and they are openly happy newlyweds, something the buttoned up character we were first introduced to wouldn't ever have thought of doing.

The other reason I love the author's books (besides her great characters, excellent writing and interesting plots) is that her K-9 Mysteries truly involve the canines. Her dog characters share the stage with the humans, and have their own personalities. Also it is pretty obvious that the author either has a lot of training experience of her own, or has done a great deal of research. The training details in the books stand out. Altogether, her characters, both human and canine together with a good mystery story make an entertaining read that is well worth your time.

Marriage is good for these MCs!

I enjoyed, and was creeped out by this book in equal measure. Marriage was good for these characters as I did not find them nearly as irritating as I have in the previous books. Most of the petulance is gone as is what I saw as immaturity. The dogs and the crime story are still the big draws and in this case the crime story creeped me right out as this book was written prior to our current disgusting state of affairs but man is it prescient. (I’m writing this review in September 2025 when DOJ, Homeland Security, and ICE are completely out of control and would absolutely engage in what we see happen here. The only things missing were the face coverings!) It made the crime story all that more visceral as I could so relate to Landon’s ire and appreciate his attempts to preserve the Constitution. I still wish for more on page consequences and villain comeuppance which we never seem to get. Guess I’m just bloodthirsty!

Rey excited for how the series moves forward.

Furtive Prey

Landon and Jessie are back from their honeymoon and are met by Homeland Security with an emergency. They won't give any information but want free reign to complete their investigation. So far they have stopped everyone at roadblocks and illegally interrupted and searched their vehicles. Landon refuses to cooperate unless they can show just cause and identify parameters for their search. He also refuses to sign a warrant to present to the judge so they counterfeited their own which he arrested them for. When things finally came together for the SO and FBI they found the scientists they found out were missing and the stolen organized computer. They also found who were calling the shots and they were also arrested for kidnapping and treason among other things. Also all the fur babies got some action.

I love the Jessica Anderson series, partly because I love stories involving SAR (Search & Rescue) and HRD (Human Remains Detection). Reading this series also gives insight into the training of such dogs. This novel was the first time FA (Fugitive Apprehension) dogs were utilized in the story, which involves two missing scientists and a missing biotech computer, as well as duplicitous federal agents, said agents mistakenly believing they could order around and control the sheriff.

I do wish that Ms. Keur would stop using the copyright symbol every time she mentions Kevlar, Stetson, and other commonly referenced brand names that are generically used in fiction, usually in all lower case. It's unnecessary.

Absolutely perfect

As usual, the writing was great, the dogs fascinating. If you worried about the relationship being boring after marriage, the author did a superb job of illustrating the little adjustments and changes that come with the legal change. I almost laughed at a couple of comments that mirrored my early marriage days.

But the best part was the plot. The legal, scientific and political ramifications were real and thought provoking. As usual, watching Smugs getting bit on their arse by the supposed Rural Hicks was hilarious.

Put me on the waiting list for the next book.

Where have you been??

Another great read. You have set the bar another notch higher. I am a very avid reader, and over the years I have read most of the crime and suspense novels published. I can name several that I eagerly awaited each new release to keep up with.
What I completely do not understand is how you managed to elude my radar for so many years.
I have found your style of writing draws a person in and invites them to be a part of the story. Especially if one has had special relationships with great animals in their own lives.
You are now on my list of must follow authors. So please get back to the keyboard, your audience is waiting.

Another great book in the Jessica Anderson K-9 series!

Furtive Prey, the 9th book of the Jessica Anderson K-9 Mysteries is a great addition to this series!
A book series best read from the start DL Keur has done a great job of building up characterization of her main core characters with each subsequent book - something that is very evident in how that helped the plot of Furtive Prey unfold.
Action packed mystery plots, lovable quirky characters and intelligent beautiful K-9s have made me a true fan of this series!

Wonder Dogs

Love these books and how the dogs & cats are interwoven inside the story. I wasn’t sure about this book at first, it fact I was very worried as it seemed at this time in history that it would was leaning on bad politics. I’m glad it didn’t as the narrative turned to common sense, and showed how we can work together as a Democracy to benefit all walks of life.
Jessie and Landon have such a beautiful relationship between themselves, family, friends, and animals. Can’t wait to read her next book.

Dog lover mystery series

This book along with all the previous books in this series contains the elements of a good mystery - flawed hero/heroine with grit and integrity; villain(s), red herring(s), perfect setting, masterful suspense, and from my perspective the very best part of this series - dogs of various breeds. The many faceted smart, loyal true heroes and heroines of the series, highly trained, able and willing to risk their lives for and upon command of their handlers.

I loved the twists and turns

With the characters fully developed, the sheriff’s office, accompanied by so many professionals, the bad guys were on the run. Technology, albeit a little scary, is possible.
There were a lot of possible bad guys, and the reality of authorities reaching over the line, is so possible. Many government agencies need a Landon and Judge to protect us from their overreach.
My older brother lives in Idaho. After more than 30 years, he is thankful for the Idaho constitution.

Totally Awesome Series

After reading nine books in this series, I decided it was time to express my appreciation to the author. I love the characters and the dogs! Upon finishing each book, couldn’t wait to start the next. You become so enmeshed with the lead players as well as their personalities. I just knew in earlier books that Jessie and Landon would end up together, even though they didn’t even like each other. Other characters in the series are like family. I can’t wait for book 10!

3½⭐ I have taken the liberty of "borrowing / sharing" this review I came across from a fellow lover of the series as it sums up everything I have been at a loss/don't have the words to say about this series and why I am so enjoying the books.

"I stumbled upon this series a while ago. From the very first book, I was hooked. It turned out to be so much more than I imagined it to be. Complex characters that develop and grow with each story. Fascinating mystery story lines about SAR (Search and Rescue) first responders that are dedicated and highly trained. And, of course, we have Jessica's "Wonder Dogs." I highly recommend the entire series and suggest that you start with the first book, "Death Scent." It really is a great series. :)" - by Carolyn on 7th March 2025

Hard to imagine the series getting better, but it does
Dog, dogs, dogs - beautiful, gorgeous, intelligent, wonderful dogs. The people are great as well. Love how characters - human and canine continue to grow and after encountering obstacles that must be overcome to keep the area law abiding and safe for its citizens. Kept putting the book down to get something done, but that didn't last long. Worst part of that is now I have to wait for the next in the series. Highly recommend!

Can't wait for next book on series

Love this book series. Read the first 4 in 2 days when I discovered D.L Keur as an author and ensured I flagged future books so would not miss them. Great story telling. Keur weaves the interaction of people, their love of their rural home town, people and country with the dogs they love and work with and action without having to resort to explicit sex scenes and violence.

Always a good ride

This book didn't disappoint. This series is a thrill ride. I appreciate the accuracy of the science also. I am supposing that the object of the search could actually be a possibility. I love the characters flawed and human but brave as sticking to their principles. One warning though if you don't start at the beginning of the series you will probably be lost and confused at points simply because the characters are complex and have already survived much.

Stoked!!

I just got lost in this book! I love the entire series! Each as good or better than the last. I had goose bumps when Sheriff was addressing the adjunct general. I love his love of the letter of the law! Wondering how his houseful will interact with the married couple. I loved Amy!! I love Terri! Andy was falling off my list of favorites! Jessie is intense !
Love all things with the dogs! I just love this series and all its characters!

I had a little trouble reading this. It was not anything like the other books.

I think with all of the jargon that was used, I fumbled through; thank goodness for their dictionary. It just didn’t seem to be as personal as the other books although I did get through it and I’m ready for the next one I gave it five stars because it was really well written, but my attention span just flagged a just a little.

so very excellent! First class writing!

Just got done binge reading this series, can’t wait for the next book! I love that this author focuses on the story and creates personality for the dogs as well as her characters. I read a lot of books and honestly while I don’t mind the sex scenes most books now have too many and I skip past them. It’s a nice relief to not see that here and be able to focus on the adventure!

EXCELLENT-Not to be missed series.

I have thoroughly enjoyed these books. As an avid reader, I appreciate how nuanced and interesting these characters are, which included the dogs, of course. I feel like these characters become friends that I rout for as the series continue. Really enjoyable and easy to empathize with. The plotting is well done and credible.
Not quite finished and already sad to be close to finishing this series. 10+

Another Winner

Do you like SAR (Search & Rescue)? If you haven't read this series, it would be best if you started at the beginning. All have been great! Mystery, dogs, training, tragedy, attraction, challenges plus overcoming problems. . . There's family and friends to bond with. . . AND the story and then it goes on.

Full of fun, bonding of hearts, drawing in enough moments for each character to round out their personalities and contribute to the complex plot. Keeping the reader tied to the town, the people and the story! Always great plots and the dogs are the highlight!
