This is perfect for fantasy romance readers who yearn for slow burn, adventure, intrigue, and rich world building.
Pampered Princess Yona, daughter of a pacifist, flees a bloody palace coup with her snarky guard (and childhood best friend). Their dynamic is perfect. Antagonist, but also they would die for each other. Jibing, but protective. Filled with naivety and innuendo.
I have watched the anime up to what constitutes as the first two volumes of the manga. I do prefer the anime as there’s more colour, better depiction of characters due to the movement, and better flow.
However, I was impressed by how much was captured in each frame. The characters’ personalities and inner psyche is captured in limited space and dialogue.
I also liked that the author had a few panels that are almost like a mini blog, updating readers about random thoughts or going-ons in her own life.
This has definitely convinced me I need to continue on. The character development in just these three volumes was spectacular and the plot has barely gotten started.
I am copying my review for the 3-1 version which I read into volume 1 for better access.

This is the best opening to a manga series I've ever read. The drama, the character depth, the world-building, the hints of romance to come. It dips a little in the middle when we are introduced to a lot of characters in quick succession. But I appreciate how much plot and character development we get in this first volume. It's delightful watching Yona mature and grow into her independence. Hak is a new favorite character and I love any time the story is focused on him or his relationship with Yona. The art is stunning and I appreciated the complexity of the panel placement and how it helped convey mood.
Given how long this series is, I'm thrilled they are finally releasing the combined editions. Normally, I would not willingly go into a series that is 40+ issues deep - the commitment! But this series is worth the investment.

Yona mi reina 💖 akatsuki no yona es uno de mis mangas fav desde tiempos innumerables ya que tiene de todo; acción, comedia, romance y unos tremendos desarrollos de personajes. Me gustan demasiado este tipo de historias. Por lo que comence a coleccionar está edición 3 en 1 de Panini y la verdad es que no me arrepiento.
La trama es emocionante.

Conocí primero el anime, pero lo ame tanto que me leí el manga, saber que está apuntó de acabar, me hizo retomarlo, y no puedo, es simplemente una obra maestra, los personajes son tan buenos, todos los detalles de cultura están tan presentes
Debo decir que tal vez porque no he acabado el manga, pero tengo muchísimos sentimientos encontrados con Soo-Won 🥹😅 odio lo que hizo, pero creo que entiendo, porque el mismo siente la culpa y el dolor, pero no se, es un personaje que no termina de encajar en alguna parte de mi cerebro, en el sentido de que no se realmente que pensar de él.

He escuchado mucho sobre Sta historia, y tengo ciertas expectativas, pero si soy 100% sincera no me termino de atrapar este primer tomo. Claro que me do con dudas que quiero aclarar porque empezó con todo pero me falto un poco más ...espero que con el siguiente tomo me enganche

A sheltered princess, complicated loyalties, and a story that had me laughing one minute and worrying the next.
I went into Yona of the Dawn not knowing how attached I would get to these characters. This edition collects the first three volumes, and by the time I finished, I knew I wanted to keep reading.
I’ll be honest: Yona frustrated me in the beginning. She came across as spoiled, helpless, and used to everyone catering to her. But the opening gives us a glimpse of her outside the comfort of the palace before taking us back to her sheltered life. That little glimpse mattered to me. It suggested that there was more to her story, and without it, I might have struggled to keep reading.
Learning more about her childhood helped me understand how being sheltered and pampered had shaped her, even if she still frustrated me.
When her life changes, the story gives her room to struggle. Her grief and confusion feel real, and there are moments when even the smallest action shows how much she is trying to find her way forward. Watching her begin to question herself, recognize the limits of her sheltered upbringing, and decide that she wants to become stronger was one of my favorite parts. I went from being annoyed with her to cheering her on.
Then there’s Hak. An eighteen-year-old general with impressive fighting skills, a sharp tongue, and a talent for teasing Yona at almost any opportunity? He got my attention quickly. His humor brought some much-needed laughter into the heavier moments, especially when we meet his grandfather and see where some of that attitude comes from.
I didn’t love every comment Hak made, though. A few had me wanting to tell him to stop talking. But his actions, his concern for Yona, and the feelings he doesn’t openly explain kept me invested in him. Their interactions had me hoping for a romantic moment, only to end up laughing when it went completely differently than I expected. Yona’s lack of awareness certainly doesn’t make things easy for him!
Su-Won also kept me guessing. My feelings about him changed more than once, and just when I thought I knew what to make of him, another expression or moment gave me something else to question. I appreciated how complicated the author made him. I could be angry with him and still find myself wondering what he truly felt and what I might not understand yet.
The artwork adds so much to those emotions. Shock, grief, anger, and affection come through in the characters’ faces, sometimes before they say anything at all. I don’t always get this emotional while reading manga, but this one had me worried, upset, laughing, and getting attached to people faster than I expected. Even some of the family moments caught me right in the heart.
I also really enjoyed how the world building unfolds. We learn about the kingdom, its tribes, its struggles, and its legends as Yona begins to understand the world beyond the palace. That felt fitting for her story and made the information easy to follow. The legends especially caught my interest as their connection to the larger story began to take shape.
And I have to mention the author’s little notes along the sides. The glimpses into the creative process, everyday life, and appreciation for the assistants added such a personal touch. Some made me laugh, and I enjoyed seeing the care behind the work.
My biggest difficulty was how helpless and naïve Yona felt at first, but her growth made continuing worthwhile. By the end of this collection, I cared about her, loved the humor, and wanted to spend more time with these characters. There’s adventure, grief, complicated loyalties, hints of romance, and a growing sense that this world has much more waiting to be discovered.
My daughter is only eleven and isn’t quite ready to take on a long series yet, but this is definitely one I plan to introduce her to when she is. I could see it being a great first manga for her.
For myself, I’m definitely continuing. This story pulled me in, and I want to see where Yona’s determination takes her next.

What if a naive and sheltered Princess, the sole heir to the throne, was forced on the run with only her bodyguard for protection? What if, while running for her life, she learns more about her people, her bloodline, and herself? I know many are familiar with this story from the popular anime, but I was reading this with fresh eyes having not seen the anime or read the previous single volume mangas.
This would be a great fit for those that love the bodyguard trope or "touch her and die" trope.
The beginning was a little rough, as Yona is a very, very naive and sheltered princess. So some of the dialogue was a little cringe worthy / adolescent. But once the story got going the action and adventure helped it really take off. The artwork is beautiful, though many of the characters physically look very similar which made it difficult to distinguish sometimes (the artist noted that they hate using "tone" to color hair, as it makes it more difficult and time consuming). I really wish this had been done in color instead of black and white, as I feel like that would have helped a lot! By the time we got to the end of the omnibus I was definitely invested in where the story was going next, so I will be keeping my eyes peeled for the next installment.
One criticism I had was there were several author/illustrator "notes" littered throughout this that would immediately take me out of the story. They felt really out of the place and inconsequential (no, I don't need to know the author has a blog I can send fan mail to). I would have loved to see this as possibly a "bonus" at the end of the manga, but it was really distracting having these snippets appear mid panel of the story.

I highly recommend this edition for anyone who's considering picking up the series! It's a perfect sample amount to properly set the plot and inform the reader if the story is for them.
I will definitely be continuing this series! The characters are complex and likable, and the plot is engaging and unique. I only have two little critiques: some of the characters look a little similar and can be a bit hard to differentiate. This is always an issue in manga because of the black-and-white format, and I'm sure this is completely different in the anime! My other critique is the complete lack of female characters. All notable characters besides Yona are male. Her mother passed before the story, and any woman shown is only there briefly to swoon over one of the male characters. I hope this aspect of the story changes later on! I find it particularly noteworthy since this manga is a shoujo and thus targeted towards girls.

LOVE Yona of the Dawn!! Such a great start and I absolutely need to binge read the rest now! Nostalgia at its finest right now. Reading this as an adult now is such a cool experience because it all aged beautifully. The journey Yona has to embark on due to her father being murdered in cold blood, and her friendship with Hak and Su-Won and seeing how everything changed after her father died was gut wrenching. Also I can’t wait to see how Yona grows from being a pampered princess to having to fight for her life.
Also I have to add I love the art style of Mizuho Kusanagi. The character art is amazing and the expressions of the characters really make me feel the emotions coming off the page.

I absolutely loved the storyline! It was so interesting and kept me invested from beginning to end. There was also a really nice touch of humor that balanced out the more serious moments perfectly.
And can we talk about the little love triangle vibe?! 👀 I am HERE for it. Add a slow-burn romance, found family, amazing character dynamics, and I was sold.

I've heard a lot about Yona of the Dawn whenever people offer shoujo manga/anime recommendations. I've aged out of the target audience so I never sought it out; but when the universe has the publisher offer me an ARC, how can I refuse? While the story does start out with Yona being a typical teenage princess of her world, she does experience significant character growth in this 3-in-1 volume. I think this format helped me go from "That was interesting," to "Okay, I am now invested in these characters." Adding to the strong heroine, the supporting characters and the world-building definitely elevate the story, making it appealing for older readers like myself who were already adults when this manga first started getting published. I'm really interested to see how the in-world mythology works out, making this a bit more substantial than my usual "light reading."

I'm invested in the story but are we just gonna scoot past the cousin thing? Like I know it's a thing that happened whatever but first cousins isn't something they HAD to put in there, yknow? That's really my only beef with it. I love the 3 in 1 books and I will be picking these up for sure!

I am normally a Shojo Beat kind of gal, but this hit all of the right beats for me. Strong female character, a hint of romance, and gathering allies to take back the throne. And I love that you get a hint of a bigger picture, little by little, of this world without it being an info dump on you.

Thank you Net Galley and Viz Media for the ARC. I can’t wait for volume 4. I absolutely love the story. I loved watching Yona gain her confidence after enduring trauma, betrayal and having to flee her own kingdom. I enjoyed the dynamic between Yona and Hak. I can’t wait to see what happens when Su Won enters the picture again. The manga is beautifully drawn and written.

I've known about Yona of the Dawn for awhile but I always said that I wanted to read the manga before watching the anime and then I just never got into reading the manga. So this arc was my first introduction to the actual story of Yona of the Dawn. I'm really excited and happy that I was picked for this omnibus and I think it was perfectly made for me. My philosophy for anime and manga is to give it 3 chapters or 3 episodes before giving up on it because we all know that manga and anime tend to have a hard time getting it's footing so early on, I think what got me into the plot was that this omnibus contained the first 3 volumes of the manga. I wasn't really sold on the plot after the first volume and normally I would've given up on the story, however since I already had volume 2 and 3 on hand in this omnibus I continued on and BOY!!! am I ever glad that I did. Once I finally understood where the plot line was going and the goal Yona was trying to achieve, I was fully pulled in and along for the ride and I CRAVED more by the time I got to the last page. I need to know what happens NOW! I want to watch the anime NOW!! I need all of the Yona and Hak injected right to my veins! Please, give this a manga a chance even if it has a slow starts it WILL grasp you later on if it doesn't right away!

I watched the anime a while ago, and, after finishing it, I needed to know what happens next, which finally brought me to the manga. I absolutely love the art style! I enjoyed watching Yona start to grow and become more confident after Volume 1. It is really satisfying seeing her begin to find her own strength.
And Hak! I love his protectiveness toward Yona and the way he is always looking out for her. Their dynamic is definitely one of the highlights for me. I can't wait to continue Yona's story!
