Altered Lives

Rate this book
Altered Lives is a thriller involving the supernatural and parallel worlds with a deep seated, romantic core.

We have the main character Peter, an elderly man who finds himself one morning as he was when he was seventeen, except that he has all his eighty-four years of memory still intact.

The story continues with the co-main character young Peter and his quest to unfold the predicament he finds himself in. While Peter the older man sees all of this through vivid, daylight dreams, young Peter narrates his experiences in the first person. So enters the burning question that permeates the tale - are there spiritual and supernatural forces in evidence or have they both entered the mysterious phenomena of Multiple Realities?

Christine, Peter's beautiful wife, had died some years before but in this particular world where Peter is young, Christine is alive and well and it is Peter who has passed on.

If that isn't confusing, their trusted old friend the priest, Father Rodriguez features in both realities and as he delves deeper and deeper for both scientific and spiritual answers, he finds his faith stretched to the limit.

Christianity itself is in question as the plot unfolds around Peter's predicament. Was this what the Gospels were talking about? Had the inhabitants of ancient
Palestine experienced the same thing? Was Jesus himself, a product of the Many Worlds Interpretation?

No mystery is complete without a trusty police Inspector who is always two steps behind. Here enters Inspector warren who had not been particularly concerned about his lack of church attendance - until now. As the facts spectacularly unfolded before him, he most certainly regretted it.

Last but not least there is Ellen, a beautiful, young girl caught up in the extaordinary events that were to change her life forever. Was it folly to fall in love with a young boy who had all the aplomb and charm of a much older man? Was she witnessing an event way beyond anything that had ever ocurred before?

All these unanswered questions were to bring together these unwilling participants who were irrevocably drawn into a phenomenom that ultimately -altered lives.

I received a copy of this book through the Early Reviewers Program on librarything.com.

84 year old Peter North, whose wife has been dead for 17 years, suddenly wakes up in a mall in the body of his 17 year old self but with all the memories from his life as an 84 year old man. As he struggles to find answers for what has happened to him, he discovers that, wherever he is now, his wife Christine is alive and it is he who has been dead for 17 years.

This book blended elements of parallel universes, the supernatural/paranormal, with a bit of religious discourse thrown in. The emotions of the main character were well captured and conveyed to the reader. His relationship with his friend, a priest, felt very real. It was through his conversations with the priest that much of the religious debate took place. His struggle to figure out what he's going thorough, along with his desire to see the wife (and her desire to see him) that he lost 17 years ago, were the highlights of the book for me.

The story moved along at a steady pace, and the author did a great job telling a story that keeps you interested throughout. The story lost a little something toward the end where the reader gets an explanation of the main character's predicament. I felt that the explanation and the resolution weren't given as much attention from the author as I would have liked. The "why" wasn't really answered to my satisfaction, and I think there was an opportunity to go into greater detail. However, I don't think that the author wanted to place too much emphasis on the technical component of the science fiction. I'm glad I found this book. It was thoroughly enjoyable and I recommend it.
