I was pretty excited for this book given the subject's stature & contribution to our society, but I was let down. Here's my honest take on this:
When you read a biography, you expect to see a balanced approach in analysing the subject's life. As biography writers, it is easy to get stuck with a bias where you write only rosy things about the subject. The book suffers from the same. It is just a hodgepodge of random facts with an ample dose of Nationalism, Naik, and nation-building. If I had a penny for the number of times this book mentions these three topics, I would have been a millionaire. The book is too superficial & I couldn't find a proper narrative or structure to the book. A little bit of in-depth description of Mr. Naik's life in a chronological way would have helped. Shockingly, this book demonizes the concept of work-life balance and calls it an American concept. Come on, you could do better! Another startling thing was how they tried to brush aside & sugar coat the hostile takeover of Mindtree. FYI, if the promoters aren't happily handing over the firm to another firm, it is a hostile takeover. Having worked with L&T employees, I know that the place is far from a 'great place to work'(one of my friends faced gender discrimination there). The book also skips a couple of controversies associated with Naik. Halfway through the book, I started wondering if this book was sponsered by L&T/Naik. While there is no doubt about the contributions of Mr Naik or L&T to Nation building, the authors could have done a better job to convey the same in an unbiased way.

A.M. Naik: The Man who Built Tomorrow is a well written biography and focuses on the life as well as contributions of A. M. Naik who was the man behind the transformation of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to an international conglomerate. It starts from Naik’s humble beginnings and moves on with the narrative covering the triumphs and disasters in the structure of the story, as articulated by the author’s emphasis on the tireless faith and creative prowess of the leadership that propelled L&T into the next sphere.

Priya Kumar excels in depicting A. M. Naik not merely as a business magnate but as a complete person. The book throws light on his beliefs and principles, the way he worked and the bonds he created within the journey. Naik's persona is rich in detail; we see his strength and passion that have earned him the reputation of perfectionist.

Kumar’s writing skill captivates the reader and makes it easy to grasp even the most sophisticated business ideas. Her narrative is quite descriptive with regards to different stages of Naik’s careers as well as leadership defining moments. The inclusion of some stories and the author’s life assistance prompts emotions into the book.

Anyone who has any interest in business, leadership, or self-improvement would benefit greatly from reading this book. This is a great biography that is both inspirational and useful. No matter if you are an accomplished businessman or just starting out your career, you cannot help feeling inspired and enlightened by Naik’s narrative.

"My dream career has always been one that would give me the opportunity to participate in the grand mission of building the nation."

The Man Who Built Tomorrow is an inspiring biographical account of the Indian industrialist 𝘈𝘯𝘪𝘭 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘣𝘩𝘢𝘪 𝘕𝘢𝘪𝘬, the chairman emeritus of Larsen & Toubro, a major Indian multinational conglomerate, headquartered in Mumbai with diverse business interests mainly in engineering, manufacturing, construction, financial services and technology.

It's an inspiring account of AM Naik's story from being a 22 year old engineering graduate who almost botched his final interview to a popular industrialist & philanthropist who was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's 3rd highest civilian award in 2009 and the Padma Vibhushan, India's 2nd highest civilian award in 2019.

If you're someone who likes reading biographies & autobiographies, I think you should give this book a try.
It's an inspiring story of passion, grit and resilience.

As mentioned in the book's prelude it's a lesson in how the present can be leveraged to shape a new destiny, a new tomorrow. It is inspiring, exhilarating and, ultimately, deeply fulfilling.✨

This book is about the life of the man who built the modern face of L&T. I am grateful that I got to know more about him solely by reading this book. It is a masterclass on the power of a 'can do' attitude.

I appreciate the stature of Mr. A.M. Naik, given that so many accomplished men have talked about him and only said good things.

The reader is taken through milestone events in the journey of L&T as an organisation and the life of Mr. Naik because both are closely intertwined. On a side note, he is completely like Mr. Narayan Murthy, who recently gave the controversial 70-hour work week statement.

Youngsters looking for the much-dreaded motivation would benefit from learning how they can be of service to the nation outside the immediate government sector roles. There are also some controversial events discussed in the book that would spark lively discussion with reading buddies.

I have a connection with L&T, which is why I relate to the setting of the book and was curious to know about Mr. Naik. But that is not to say that this book is for everyone. Some portions are too technical and would appeal only to electrical and industrial engineers.

“My dream career has always been one that would give me the opportunity to participate in the grand mission of building the nation”
This is pretty much the gist of the book, co-authored by Priya Kumar and Jairam Menon and talks about AM Naik celebrated chairman of L&T and the man whose life goal is nation building.

It starts with how an ordinary junior level employee transcends the corporate ladder with sheer determination, loads of courage, his signature and unique leadership style and his passion for both the company as well as his aim to do something for the nation. There are different chapters highlighting AM Naik’s career journey and the path he took to bring L&T to the point where it is now with its pivotal role in making India self reliant. Moreover it is penned by authors who have written best sellers in the past and that reflects in the writing. The book talks about leadership, vision, networking, hard-work and passion all synonymous with AM Naik’s personality. The chapter ‘India first, India always’ would make any Indian proud.

This is more of a biography meets corporate management and leadership book and is good on those accounts. I personally felt it had a bit more written about L&T than AM Naik and would have loved to read more about the person rather than corporate praise and his passion for growing the company. There is also emphasis on the culture of enjoying work so much that one would overlook work life balance which would not sit well with many. Having said that I think this is one of those non fiction reads with a niche audience.

A.M. Naik : The Man Who Built Tomorrow is a motivating biographical novel. This book shows the journey of a blooming engineer to the honoured chairman of Larsen & Toubra (L&T).

This book was written by Priya Kumar and Jairam N Menon. It was an encouraging and inspiring read. I adored how this book also details the rise of L&T.

The language used is lucid and easy to understand. The life of A.M. Naik teaches us how hard work is key to success. His life will inspire younger generations. I loved the short chapters and adored the anecdotes. This well researched book acts as a guide for young readers. The gripping narrative makes us keep glued to the page.

This book is all about hard work, passion, dedication, determination and commitment. We can read about the era of hard work, infectious zeal and remarkable achievements, which not only elevated Naik in the L&T hierarchy, but also helped transform the company into a multinational conglomerate. I rarely read biographies and love them. But as usual we always get an exception. This book also falls in that category. It is story of a man or rather a leader, who made a company a conglomerate and its reputation by scratch. Do you know it ranks 9th in global ranking of most innovative companies? So how a person transformed a company into a big multinational which operates in more than fifty countries?

When A M Naik, stumbled upon a recruitment ad buly L & T, he grabbed the opportunity and was soon recruited as one of the engineer there. It is evident from the first page itself that Naik was a workaholic. He loves the job and was dedicated to it wholeheartedly. He changed the course of his career as well as the company with his innovative ideas and its implementations. He knew that in future IT will be the top game, so he took Charge of the moment. He took personal responsibility to improve IT business.

Reading this book gave me a much needed push. Why do you ask? Because it is a masterclass for entrepreneurs, engineers or anyone trying hard to read at the top of thier career. What sets him apart were his passion, devotion, conviction and commitment. He was concerned in micro as well as Macto aspects of the company. The quality of him i liked is quick decision making. You can do things and move on only when you take decisions quick.

If you want to learn about a leader and how he implemented his ideas and values in such a big company, if you want to learn about a leader and his role in developments in Indian subcontinent and about a avid learner even when he reached the top position, then give this book a read. You will not be disappointed, i can definitely say this!

Book Title: A.M. Naik : The Man Who Built Tomorrow
Author: Priya Kumar & Jairam N. Menon
Publisher: HarperBusiness
Format: Paperback
Language: English
Genre: Biography
Pages: 248

Priya Kumar is a name that needs no introduction; she has become synonymous with inspirational writing. Her work consistently motivates me, whether through inspirational stories or powerful biographies. While she’s written many inspiring narratives, recently she has shifted her focus to biographies of remarkable individuals who dared to chase the impossible. Her latest book tells the incredible story of Anil Manibhai Naik, the Group Chairman Emeritus of Larsen & Toubro, a true testament to resilience and visionary leadership. Lately, she has earned the title of "Biography Specialist" for her shift into this new genre of biography writing. For this book, she has teamed up with fellow writer Jairam N. Menon, bringing together their combined skillfulness to craft a spellbinding portrayal.

Focusing on the story, I uncovered the remarkable journey of this visionary man, who has been praised by numerous renowned business leaders. I later noticed that his name was among the recipients of the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor. Larsen & Toubro Limited, or L&T, is an Indian multinational company involved in various sectors, founded by the engineering duo Henning Holck-Larsen and Soren Kristian Toubro. However, A.M. Naik later emerged as the company's savior. His relentless journey to elevate the company into a major name, along with the many untold stories of how Naik made it happen, is powerfully captured in this book. I recommend this book to those who dare to reshape the world with their own vision.

At the age of twenty-two, from knowing poor English to being selected by the company and working hard through its difficult period over sixty years, A.M. Naik's life story is definitely a priceless source of inspiration that people need to know today. The cover image may not be extravagant. At first glance, I thought Naik resembled Diego Maradona. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the authors for bringing the story of such a noteworthy individual to light.

The Man Who Built Tomorrow by Priya Kumar and Jairam N. Menon is a compelling biography of A.M. Naik, the visionary who transformed L&T into a global conglomerate. While I am not usually inclined towards business reads, my familiarity with Priya Kumar's works drew me to this book, and I’m glad it did. Her insightful writing style, coupled with Jairam N. Menon’s narrative, made this journey through Naik’s life both engaging and enlightening.

Before reading this book, I knew little about A.M. Naik and even less about L&T, but it beautifully unfolds the story of a man whose clear vision and unwavering dedication led him to the top. The book does more than just narrate his journey, it immerses you into the spirit of hard work, determination, and leadership that defined Naik's path to success.

Reading this book felt like getting to know A.M. Naik personally. His story is a testament to the strength of perseverance and how a clear vision can shape not just a career, but an entire organization. It also made me realize how many unsung heroes like him have made our nation proud through sheer grit and dedication.

The Man Who Built Tomorrow is not just a story of one man but a glimpse into the world of corporate leadership, challenges, and triumphs. Whether you're a business enthusiast or just someone seeking inspiration, this book has something profound to offer.

When it comes to book covers, the addition of pictures, always makes the book feel more realistic, and Harper does this exceptionally well. They are a dedicated publisher who consistently delivers the best, not only to the authors but also to their readers.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book

“My friends are never transactional. My friends are my friends for their own sake, not for what they can do for me”

I was super excited to read this book firstly, because of A M Naik, secondly because of Priya Kumar.
I've been a huge fan of Priyas’ writing. So, I really wanted to give this one a read and who doesn't want to read a book about 2019 Padma Vibhushan awardee, the man behind L & T, the man who made a huge impact on our defense sector and played a major role in our countries' development. Let it be healthcare, education, aerospace, every damn thing and a name behind it all M K NAIK. I did read ‘The nationalist’ during my college days and was really impressed with his work in Larsen and Toubro. It's good to see more writers write about him.

Coming to this book, Priya Kumar and Jairam N Menon have done a great job. The book talks about Mr Naik’s hard work, compassion etc. How an ordinary guy turns into a great leader. The book isn't sugar coated but instead talks the truth. Talks about his struggles too.
I'm a defence enthusiast as my father served in the forces and I have always heard about L & T and their role in our defence and this book basically shows the struggle and hard work the man behind this went through. All I see in a patriotic person who is ready to go to any length for his country.

Really enjoyed the book, you'll too.
Happy reading

The book revolves around A. M. Naik, a bright and industrious engineer employed by the famous company L&T, a.k.a. Larsen and Toubro, who took the company to new heights and was considered an asset by all. I was acquainted with the name L&T due to participating in placement drives; this book gave me a more detailed and deeper look into the company, it’s workings and some of its past projects. Naik was such a person who was more interested in getting his hands dirty with grime and grease of the shop floor. Despite being in a supervisory position, he was rarely found at his desk by his peers. Being an engineer of a core stream myself, I absolutely idolize this trait in engineers who are senior to me. After learning about this trait in A.M. Naik only increased my respect for him. His drive and his work ethics are inspirational to say the least.
A visionary, philanthropist and an eloquent spokesperson, Naik is remembered for his ambitious undertakings and ‘his ability to see beyond immediate horizons’. It was immensely impressive to know about all the challenges faced, the solutions that were developed and the sacrifices that had to be made in order to achieve the same. The book is less about a corporate company and more about the heights to which determined individuals, especially engineers can take our country. I would encourage everyone to pick up this book, it’ll leave you inspired and in-awe.

'A. M. Naik: The Man Who Built Tomorrow' by Priya Kumar tells us the story of the exceptional entrepreneur A. M. Naik who like a true hero took L & T to the heights which it is today. The book really shows how a person dedicated to his goals and aspirations works on his dreams and on himself to make sure that he doesn't fall short in his journey to success. This book will surely aspire people to work on their goals. The book gives us a glimpse into the legends six decade long career and shows us how even in the ups and downs he didn't give up on what he really loved doing.

What I loved about the book:

• Author has really done a detailed research on A. M. Naik and given us a glimpse into his life
• I really loved the photos which gives us a glimpse of his childhood and about the work life of A. M. Naik and his achievements.

Overall, this was a very inspiring read and I am glad to have gotten an opportunity to read this book.

I rarely read non fiction. But I am very glad that I read this particular book.

As a corporate employee, I had heard about L&T. But it’s a shame that I didn’t know about the history of this company and how much it has helped our country to develop. And it’s more shame that I hadn’t heard about A.M. Naik, the legendary leader who expanded the horizon of L&T in an unimaginable way.

Firstly, I just loved the way each chapter was structured. One subject in one chapter made reading very easy for me. Also, I appreciate that the authors have also gone ahead and mentioned other books based on AM Naik. And the writing was impeccably perfect, not one I felt bored while reading this book.

I leant a lot from this book. I learnt that perspective matters. I learnt that no matter how successful you are, you should keep learning. I also learnt that Nation Building is our duty, we as an individual should try our best to do something for our motherland. And I learnt about the ambitious, talented and insightful leader of L&T, Mr A.M. Naik. I realised that your vision is something that will help you and your company reach greater heights.

I did feel that this book was more about L&T and less about A.M. Naik at places. But I am not complaining because it was great to gain insights into L&T.

After reading this book, I have this sudden urge to read about the history of other organisations too. All thanks to this informative and beautiful book. Will recommend this book to everyone who wants to grow themselves and also be a part of overall growth of our country.

This is the inspiring tale of a philanthropist and visionary entrepreneur who built the empire that became the global powerhouse. He built Larsen & Toubro (L&T) with his dedication and hard work. This story is about Am Naik, a young graduate who later became known as "Am Naik: The Man Who Built Tomorrow."

It's the tale of an excellent mind, AM Naik, who saved the company with his genius and patience and made its place irreplaceable in the market. This book explores the journey of Am Naik, from small village to big city, from being an engineer to chairman of the group and turning a brand into a global name. The leadership qualities and the humbleness throughout his journey speak a lot about him, along with his brilliance in business.

Authors Jairam N. Menon and Priya Kumar precisely covered the untold stories of his life. The narration and storytelling of authors make this biography too engaging for the readers.

This book is a commendable recommendation not just for business or entrepreneur minds but for everyone who wants to make big in their lives. Pick it and adorn your bookshelf with this book.  🤍

This book is an inspiring biography of one of India’s most influential business leaders. The book highlights A.M. Naik’s journey from a young engineer to the chairman of L&T, capturing his unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and passion for nation-building. What I found most impactful were his thoughts on continuous learning and the importance of giving back to the country. Naik believed that success isn’t just about personal achievement, but about contributing to a larger purpose.

The book is thoughtfully written, with each chapter shedding light on different phases of Naik’s life and career. His belief that "a leader is defined by their ability to create other leaders" truly resonated with me. This biography is not just about business success but is filled with life lessons on perseverance, vision, and hard work.
It’s a must-read for anyone looking for motivation and leadership insights.

"A.M. Naik: The Man Who Built Tomorrow" tells the inspiring story of A.M. Naik, a visionary leader who helped shape Larsen & Toubro (L&T) into a global powerhouse. The book takes readers on a journey through Naik's humble beginnings as a young engineering graduate, his first job at L&T, and how he rose through the ranks with sheer hard work and dedication.

Naik’s story is not just about professional success, it's a testament to his passion, resilience, and commitment to building meaningful relationships. Even at eighty-one, his energy and work ethic remain unmatched. The book explores what makes Naik such a powerful leader and motivator, someone who has not only transformed L&T but also contributed to nation-building and philanthropy.

One of the things that set Naik apart is he dreamed big and is among the fortunate few who have been able to translate into reality much of what he dreamed. He charted a bold new course for one of India’s most admired companies, and enabled it to touch heights never attained before. As a philanthropist, his outcome-oriented approach is making a tangible difference to the lives of thousands.

As Naik quotes in the book - “My mantra is simple. Passion, devotion, conviction, commitment.” He compels himself and his team to ensure that his vision goes through the grind - the shaping, bending, and honing essential for it to emerge as a reality. He believes in making every minute count and if you can get two things done in a spare minute even better. He says, “Make work your hobby. Then you can work fifteen hours and enjoy every minute.

“Naik knows his stuff, and he is gusty. That’s a formidable combo. You can’t wrong-foot him.” is what Shevde said for A.M. Naik, and honestly this proved how genuine Naik is towards his passion and profession. From an engineer to chairman, Naik is the best person to be used as an example or hardworking.

Priya Kumar on the other hand, need no introduction. Her way of writing is incredible and to the point just like Mr. Naik. So undoubtedly I picked this book, knowing that I’ll be getting to know that generational wealth is not always the key to success, but consistency and hardwork is.

This book narrated the best way it could’ve been done and I felt motivated and understood that it is now the time we shape our future. The way this book keeps going on was truly amazing and also undoubtedly beautifully written by the author.

The author has a beautiful way of portraying what they've imagined in their mind, and they've done it beautifully. This is a book literally changed the way I used to think my life's problem, and now it all seems to be very little as compared to theirs. From my side it's definitely a must read, you'll enjoy it for sure.

I heard and read about A.M. Naik in a news show and in newspapers. So, when I got the opportunity, I was thrilled to read about him, especially because this book's author is Priya Kumar. She is becoming my favorite author.

This book shows A.M. Naik's diverse personality and how his hard work has made him a great leader. He is not just a great leader but also a family man who believes in giving back to society.
He established the Nirali Memorial Medical Trust for people with a mission of healing and the Naik Charitable Trust, which builds schools and a unique skill training center. Naik believes in leadership, so he is making leaders with the help of Skill India. His love for India is profound. Larsen and Toubro have completed many projects in defense, nuclear, and other fields, and reading other people's views about him is good; all people love and respect him.

When I saw this book, especially its cover in yellow color, I fell for this color. I showed other family members how beautiful this color is. I was thinking about why they chose this color, and I got my answer while reading this book and learning the meaning of this yellow color.

▪️Book Review▪️

The book is about the journey of an engineer who was driven to get into a well known company that was quite particular about hiring their people.

A. M. Naik got almost rejected by L&T group yet his characteristics made the company bet on this newbie. And Naik did not disappointed them at all.

This middle class boy spent the quarter of his life in developing a company. Not just a company but his vision was to develop a nation by the work he was doing. And for that he was also awarded one of the highest ranks of the nation.

One of the best quality he had was he never hesitated to work on the ground level despite of his high posts in the company he was working at. Apart from that he maintained positive relationships with the ruling parties of the government without any biases.

What made him apart from others was he was open to find solutions to any problem related to the culture of India as the company was a Multi National Company.

With his willingness to develop the country as well as the company owners, he won the hearts of many people.

This is the story of a young engineer who was recruited by Larsen & Toubro. Through hard work and dedication, he rose through the ranks of the company. His success, however, was rooted in something deeper—a quality that set him apart. The saying " Leaders are born, not made" rings true for this man, who serves as an inspiration to future generations.

The book is rich with anecdotes that highlight his remarkable journey, researched and curated with care. It traces Mr. Nayak's rise from an employee to the chairman of Larsen & Toubro, an inspiring transformation. The book offers numerous life lessons from Nayak's career and personal life, with each chapter carefully structured to showcase his achievements and values. Readers can easily incorporate many of these lessons into their own lives.

What makes Nayak's life stand out is how an ordinary existence became extraordinary for so many others. The book includes pictures that offer glimpses into his family life, workplace, the projects he has led, and the numerous awards he has received. His contributions to nation-building and social welfare earned him the highest honor from the President of India. Reading biographies of great people who have dedicated their whole lives to building the legacy for the next generation. One such man is A.M. Naik, who hails from a middle-class family and studied engineering. When he saw advertisements for L&T recruitment. He gave his interview and got selected. His dedication, passion, and hard work made him grow to such great heights.

It’s my third book by Priya Kumar, mam. She writes wonderful motivational stories, and right now she beautiful gave the story of Mr. Naik. I personally adored this book for many reasons. Like, the way he handles things, a very calm person, and also comes up with solutions to problems instantly. Definitely a lot more to learn from this book.

We know how L&T has been working throughout the world. In the development of many things. Also, Mr. Naik has been a role model for many. He has been honored with Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan for his contributions to the country. Definitely you should read his book to know more about his journey and how L&T reborn. It’s a treat for every engineering person out there. A must read one.

"... I have recruited forty-one engineers and sacked thirty-eight. I don't want you to be the thirty-ninth."

A.M. Naik is an industrialist. He's not only known to Indians, but also to the whole world. It feels so inspiring for youngsters like me to read his life story and take away a few lessons. Writing a biography can come with its own set of challenges. I think the authors have done a fabulous job with respect to that. I also found the title to be meaningful. Naik's journey from a small village to leading one of the finest organizations like L&T is incredible. The way he took certain decisions at a particular time that led to the change of L&T's face kept me thinking, and I was in awe.

This is to every professional who want to climb up the ladder in their respective workplace. I personally take the traits of the leaders whenever I'm reading auto/biographies, and never the professional way. Calling out all the memoir fans and to those who are looking to boost their spirits through a book to read this.

Mr. A. M. Naik is not an unknown name in the Indian Corporate sector. He is the former Chairman of Larsen & Turbo (L&T), a company engaged in engineering and construction. He has served decades in L&T and it won’t be incorrect to say that he through his dynamic leadership has paved the way for the growth of the company making it one of the leading companies in the engineering and construction sectors in India.

A. M. Naik joined L&T at a young age of 22 years and went on to serve the company for about 50 years. According to him the key to his success and achievements is his passion towards his work. He has rightly said that, “My mantra for work is very simple. It is passion, commitment and devotion. This cannot come from outside. It has to come from deep within you - only then will it be sustainable for months that will become years and years that will become decades, and decades that will become - who knows - half a century!”.

Throughout his illustrious career, he has faced constant battles be it converting Hazira into a mega engineering complex or protecting the company from hostile takeovers or change in technologies. He was not scared to make tough decisions and had a far-sighted vision. Though there were many obstacles on the way but his determination and unwavering commitment did not deter even for a moment especially during the trying times which eventually helped L&T to become a global giant that it is today.

The book highlights not only the success story of Mr. A. M. Naik but also throws light on the difficulties he along with his team at L&T faced during their journey to success. The author has wonderfully portrayed how impeccable of a leader he was in true sense highlighting his leadership, work ethics and vision but I wish there was a little mention of his life out of L&T. I would have loved to know more about him as a person than just as a pioneer of L&T. All in all, it is an inspirational book.
