Two souls, forever entwined…and running for their lives.

Nyssa Blacksea is a wanted woman. The Empire she once served now hunts for her and her unlikely new companion, Quinn. It’s only a matter of time until the two women are found and executed. Desperate and with nowhere to turn, Nyssa and Quinn hatch an insane plan—offer the Empire its oldest enemy in exchange for their freedom.

But the path to their freedom is fraught with assassins, heart-breaking betrayal, strange gods…and a dangerous queen who demands Nyssa to submit. Or be broken. Complicating everything is Nyssa’s growing affection for Quinn. Both are inextricably linked by magick that they barely understand and struggle to control.

Facing incredible odds and her own mortality, Nyssa has to confront her fears—and her feelings—or succumb those who wish to destroy her.

For readers who love unique epic fantasy set against a semi-modern backdrop, featuring a sapphic enemies-to-lovers slow burn romance. Unworthy will appeal to fans of Arcane (Netflix), The Legend of Korra, and Gideon the Ninth.

This book is insane! I can’t believe it’s only 400+ pages. I feel like the adventures were too intricate and fantastical that it must have surpassed 400+ pages.

It was one hell of a ride. My emotions were exploited and I was crying so much my face was puffy my entire shift. Worth it though.

You know how people say the second book is always the hardest to blah blah well there’s none of that in Unbound. The bar was set even higher and I am truly excited and holding my breath for book 3. What else can the author throw at the character???

J.A. Vodvarka’s Unbound is an Arcane (Netflix TV series) inspired action/adventure with the feel of an anime series. Along with action and adventure, the series delivers slow burn romance, humor, and a ton of magic.

The plot was solid. Nyssa and Quinn are grappling with the dual issues of being outlaws in the Empire and coming to terms with their new powers and status as demi-gods. They plan to lie low and possibly seek a deal with a rival kingdom, but those plans go quickly awry when the pair face a shocking betrayal!

It was an enjoyable tale. Like the first book, it had plenty of twists and turns, and our cast of characters mixed banter with action on their various adventures. We meet new characters, learn more about this fantasy world, and even encounter some meddlesome gods!

Overall, this series is a solid read. That said, I did find my interest in the story waning in the second half of this installment. I’m honestly not sure what caused this shif as the writing quality remained consistent and the plot continued moving forward but something about the momentum just didn’t hold for me the way the first book and first half of this book did. I found myself putting it down for longer stretches and not feeling that urgent pull to return, which is a pity because I genuinely like Nyssa and Quinn as characters and their adventures are fun.

I appreciated getting more of the secondary characters in this one. Athen, Aryis, Reece, plus Fontaine and the pirate crew. The support cast is a fun bunch. It was nice to see Reece get a romance arc of her own after she got displaced from Nyssa’s affections in the first book!

I’ll probably take a small break from this series and read something else next, but I do intend to pick up the third instalment at some future date.

Rating: 3 stars

Audio Note: This second installment added Wayne Mitchell to the cast to deal with the Athen POV segments, but the bulk of the audio was still performed by Paige Reisenfeld. I preferred Reisenfeld to Mitchell and would have preferred a single narrator, as both narrators had very different styles which made the experience a little more jarring than it needed to be.

JA Vodvarka's Unbound immediately swept me up on a wild adventure. The quick pace of action and suspense had me entangled in a life-or-death journey right along with our companions. Worldbuilding, a really interesting system of arcane magic, lore, power structure, political unrest, relationships, strong female leads and supporting characters, and a fantastic found family - 5 stars!
Nyssa and Quinn were fighting for their lives while they navigated complex PTSD, growing feelings for one another, and learned to wield their newfound god-magick, along with lots of ongoing new trauma (thanks JA lol).
Their path was littered with pain, loss, betrayal, and soul-bound love. There were a couple of twists I didn't see coming. I was on the edge of my seat throughout. I love Nyssa and Quinn, their strength, heart, and resilience. They are fierce! I also like the second sapphic pairing slowly blooming in the chaos.
The writing is just really good! Everything flows, changing perspectives are clear and easy to follow, great imagery, and interesting character development. Even the training sequence was good! I was fully invested.
I can not overstate how much I am enjoying this series. I am so looking forward to the next installment. I highly recommend getting started with the Blacksea Odyssey.

'Unbound' by J.A. Vodvarka takes you on an epic, high stakes fantastical journey with sassy, sapphic pirates, political mystery and intrigue, and soul crushing betrayal while incorporating well timed and placed comedic relief. Plus, a nudist, shape shifting chicken (an actual 🐔).

I enjoyed Unworthy, it was good. But Unbound is phenomenal! J.A. has grown as an author, listened to their readers - and it shows.

'Unbound' is the 2nd book in The Blacksea Odyssey. Being the sophomore book made me go into it with a bit of trepidation. However, I'm beyond thrilled to say this book did *not* suffer from sophomore syndrome. Actually, I would say it improved upon the 1st book in many ways. J.A. Vodvarka took 'Unworthy' (book 1) and said hold my beer, then preformed a Biles II with 'Unbound.'

The plot is great, and the pacing is good. That plot twist is so good, I definitely didn't see that coming. 'Unbound' hits the ground running in the first few pages, and off she goes. It had action, adventure, gut-wrenching scenes, betrayal... and my favorite part, sassy, sapphic pirates. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Prose is great, flowing nice and smooth. The writing is descriptive without being overly so. The banter is lovely. It feels natural. I especially love the bits of comedy. Timing and placing bits of comedy can be difficult, by Vodvarka does a great job with it.

I do wish there was a map included because I love it when they are. J.A. does a good job with world building so you know where you are in relation (so a map isn't actually needed), and it's easy to envision the settings and scenes.

The characters, oh how I love them (except for one that I really, really love to hate). They're well developed and dimensional. The found family in this series has my whole heart.

If you enjoy sapphic fantasy, check this series out. If you're a fan of Gideon the Ninth, especially Gideon's humor, join The Blacksea Odyssey.

If triggers are a concern for you, please see the author's site for a full list prior to reading.

The author gifted me this eARC. This is my unbiased review.

I wish that I could hug these characters. All of them. Just one big group hug. They all live in my head rent-free. I'm just constantly wondering what these amazing, imperfect people are up to when I'm not reading about them.

Unbound does not disappoint. As a follow-up to the first novel, it continues to develop the richly drawn characters and intricate plotlines that make this series so compelling. One of the joys of reading a second book is seeing how characters evolve, and in this regard, Unbound excels.

Nyssa and Quinn are on the run and their lives are in danger. The story is filled with action and tension, but there are also some very happy times in these pages. The bond between Nyssa and Quinn deepens, and their relationship is portrayed with nuance and sensitivity. They grapple with their feelings for one another (slow burn is the best type of burn, my friends) and the magic that binds them. Theirs is an emotional and heartwarming journey with plenty of drama and tension.

The book also delves into darker themes, with moments that are genuinely heart-wrenching. The stakes are high, and the characters’ struggles are palpable, making me feel deeply for them. The world-building continues to impress, expanding on the foundation laid in the first book. The small scenes with otherworldly beings are particularly intriguing, featuring exceptional descriptions that enhance their strange and delightful mannerisms - but I do not want to give too much away.

While Unbound is a fantastic sophomore novel, it does move at a slightly slower pace than its predecessor. This is not necessarily a drawback, as it allows for more in-depth character exploration and development. Fans of the first book will likely appreciate the added layers of complexity and the way the story continues to unfold.

Overall, Unbound is a stellar continuation of the series, with strong characters, an engaging plot, and a richly imagined world. The emotional depth and character growth are exceptional, and I absolutely cannot WAIT to see what happens next.

Thanks to the author for listening to my rambling love for this story. This review is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and it is voluntary.

ARC REVIEW 📖

This was a really fun read such a blast!
I'd say this aimed at 18+ ages as oppose to lower. It follows several distinct characters whom are on two sides of a conflict. The writing style and pacing is engaging with characters whose interactions mark them as certain types of people yet doesn't drag with some mature scenes/themes like violence depicted with a nice balance of action and prose. The character dynamics and types of fantastical people and beings were explained well throughout, including backstories that weren't over or under-explained, well sprinkled throughout. With enough mystery that even as I read, I found myself with many questions, yet from the plot itself, I wasn't bored or distracted, willing to read on to follow their journey and find answers.
The word-building was also pretty smooth and eased in nicely, switching between the right characters at the right time to maintain suspense and keep our interest even when I wanted to stay with certain characters! The dynamics and development between characters was really fun to watch!
The ending was satisfying as after seeing the characters change, the climax was exciting to watch unfold!
I'd recommend it to those who like Avatar: the last airbender and Arcane or those who'd like a more fantastical take on pirates in general!

Rarely is the second book better than the first but J.A. has done it. I want to thank Book funnel and the author for allowing me to read the ARC of Unbound. The way the characters are developed, their relationships with each other growing and getting to know more background happened in this story. I found myself happy that I didn’t have to worry about a certain character’s heart being broken because it looks like she potentially found love in the most unexpected person. I can’t adequately convey how much I enjoyed reading this book. I made myself stop so it wouldn’t be over. The storytelling, plot twists, character development is magnificent. I will be eagerly awaiting the third book

I was very fortunate to be an ARC reader for the second time for this author and this is my complete honest review!

I would give this book 6 stars if I could! I was completely blown away. After I read Unworthy, the first book of the trilogy, I thought surely that was my favorite book. But Unbound blew it out of the water (not that Unworthy wasn’t a fantastic book on its own!). Unbound does an amazing job of building on the story building in the first book, and going so in depth in the lore of the world it is set it, rich with ancient magic and ancient gods, prophecies, traveling between realms, etc.
Another thing I applaud the author for is the depth of the entire cast of characters. Even side characters have deep back stories and character development that all come together to fight for a joint cause. Each individual side character has as much personality and strength as the main protagonists, and it was more fun to read than other books with side characters that fall flat into the background.
I am determined to buy the whole trilogy in physical copies once the third book is released in the fall because i know without a doubt this is a series I am going to want to read over and over again. Hands down my favorite series of books. I recommend them to all my bookish friends!
Thank you to the author for including me in the ARC reading, it has been such a pleasure to read these books!

This is the second book to the series Blacksea Odyssey and can I just say, this series has me in a chokehold. You continue to follow Nyssa and Quinn throughout their discovery of themselves and running away from those who threat them, while also trying to protect one another.

Unbound was definitely more of a slow burn than the first in the series, Unworthy, and I times I felt like I was having to drag myself to the next point in the story, but by the end it was worth it. I do have to say, the story could have been a bit shorter and still would’ve gotten all the points across.

My love for the two characters have grown exponentially, and there’s even a possible start to another sapphic relationship (I hope). The family that has grown amongst all of the characters has warmed my heart and made me even more tied to the story.

I’m not one to read a whole series because I find them to be dragged out and ultimately disappoint me, but this is a series I can’t stop. The amount of thought and imagination that the author has put into the stories is very impressive and I look forward to finishing the series!

“You are not small. You are a god, so be a f*cking god. You deserve everything you were ever denied. You deserve your heart’s desire. Have the courage I know you possess to take what you want in this world. And maybe stop being scared to let people know how you feel. How you truly feel.” -Fontaine

I have no words that can accurately describe just how amazing this second book of the Blacksea Odyssey is!!! J. A. Vodvarka does an incredible job expanding on the world and diving deeper into character development. I am so happy I signed up to be an ARC reader and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

We continue the story of Nyssa Blacksea and now Quinn, the fugitive she wound up saving in book one. The two learn throughout their journey that their souls have always been connected by an ancient magick and will be forever entwined. Both are on the run from the Empire, who has put hefty bounties out for them to be returned to the Empress, so they must watch their every move as to not get caught. Anyone could be a traitor to Nyssa and Quinn at this point. To get their freedom back, they come up with a plan to do the unthinkable - kidnap a powerful queen and the oldest rival of the Empire.

“That’s completely insane. I’m in!” -Athen

Of course the story wouldn’t be complete without the whole rag tag team: Elias, Fontaine (who is now no longer a chicken), Athen, Reece, and Aryis. They all show up throughout the story to help Quinn and Nyssa on their epic adventure to freedom. They also manage to make some new and unexpected friends along the way.

Love is the pathway to pain. What do you think?” Tajal asked, training all his eyes on Nyssa. “I—I think you’re right.” “Then why do you mortals seek it out if it creates so much pain?” Nyssa’s only thought was of her friends. And of Quinn. “It’s worth the f*cking risk.”

Needless to say, I cannot recommend reading the continuation of this series enough! It’s action packed, epic fantasy, magick, gods, slow burn enemies-to-lovers sapphic romance, more humor, more spice, and more pirates!

“Be fierce . . . and be a f*cking god.”

Wow, this book was amazing! Thank you J.A. Vodvarka for this ARC. So much happened in this book. Training sequences, a mad plan to save Nyssa and Quinn from bounty hunters, betrayal, quests to save people, and more! We have a few chapters from new POVs, mostly from Justiciar Medias and a few from Suvi Rell.

The character development in this was amazing. Everyone grew and became more complicated. We also learn more about what being a cursed god means and watch as Nyssa and Quinn's powers grow, along with their attraction to each other. The spice level is still mild, but it definitely has more spice than book one. Im really looking forward to the next book.

“You are not small. You are a god, so be a fucking god.”

“Hold your head up high. They might have us in chains but we are not their property.”

SUMMARY:

This is the second book in the Blacksea Odyssey, the sequel to Unworthy. It picks up right where the first book left off. In the aftermath of the end of Unworthy, Nyssa and Quinn are together, and they must fight for their own survival and their own freedom. With the help of the many friends they made along the way, they come up with a plan to win their freedom, a plan that honestly I thought was outrageous and made no sense. To see how it turns out, just read this book.

THOUGHTS:

I read Unworthy as a review copy, but this one I’m reading as an arc…my first one! I liked Unworthy. But this one was waaaay better in my opinion. I wanted more of Quinn’s POV in the first book, and this book gave me just that. It made me cry (although, now that I’m reading more regularly, I’ve found that I cry more easily while reading than I used to think). I even started slamming (out loud) some of the characters that were infuriating me. This book is significantly darker than Unworthy, which I’m here for! This is a slow burn sapphic fantasy novel. It also has pirates and empires and magic and weird otherworldly gods, and a wonderful group of friends that are practically family to each other. So if you’re interested in any of this, please check out this book!

Also, I will now get chills whenever I hear the question, “Can I show you something?” Iykyk

Fantasy with Attitude!
this series keeps getting better!

I received this book from J. A. Vodvarka as an ARC, this is my honest review of her work.

This is book 2 of the Blacksea Odyssey series, and it is a wonderful continuation of Unworthy.
We get to see so much more of our favorite characters and their shenanigans, as well as a deeper dive into our all too familiar, Nyssa and Quinn. With the stakes even higher than before, Nyssa and Quinn team up to face formidable foes and difficult challenges.
They learn to take charge of their newly discovered powers with the help of Fontaine and the rest of Elias’ pirate crew. Wait, Fontain.…the chicken?!?... Yep you read right, the chicken, which (plot twist) can shapeshift and is a nudist.
There are unpredictable plot twists, gut-wrenching scenes (please see content warnings), and friendship losses, with a healthy portion of the well-known features of a Blacksea Odyssey book: adventure, action, and betrayal. Oh, and *Spoiler Alert* Nyssa and Quinn finally break that tension between them, and we finally see the start of a budding romance.
If you are a fan of sapphic fantasy, pirates, arcane punk vibes and enjoy a mix of action, adventure, and romance, the Blacksea Odyssey series is the series for you. I am impatiently awaiting, with bated breath, the release of book 3. ** Squealing in girly super fandom**

after devouring the first book in this series, I was hoping book 2 would be a similar experience, but this one was just... good? definitely slowed down in pace and had some signs of 2nd-book syndrome. it still kept me interested enough to probably continue to book 3, though.

also, this is a weird nitpick but there were SO many typos in this one??? way more than in book 1. those always kinda take me out of the story.

First off, I want to thank the author for providing me with a review copy of "Unbound." All thoughts here are my own and exuberantly given!

If you thought the first book, "Unworthy," was good, then buckle up because "Unbound" takes it to a whole new level. This sequel picks up right where the first book left off, and if pacing was an issue before, it certainly isn’t now.

The Story:
Nyssa Blacksea and Quinn are on the run, hunted by the Empire Nyssa once served. Their plan? To offer the Empire its oldest enemy in exchange for their freedom. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, apparently. From assassins to strange gods and a dangerous queen demanding submission, the stakes are incredibly high. And amidst all this chaos, Nyssa’s feelings for Quinn continue to grow, adding another layer of tension and emotion.

The Pace:
This book spans a much longer time period than the first, but you won’t feel it dragging at all. The story moves at a breakneck speed, keeping you hooked from start to finish. There’s no “second book syndrome” here—if anything, "Unbound" is leaps and bounds better than "Unworthy."

The Themes:
"Unbound" delves into darker and deeper themes, and it does so beautifully. The angst and emotional depth are palpable, making this not just a fantasy adventure but a roller coaster of feelings. Trust me, you’ll be racing through the pages, experiencing a whole range of emotions.

The Characters:
Nyssa and Quinn continue to be fantastic leads. Their dynamic is electric, and the development of their relationship is both heartfelt and intense. The challenges they face together strengthen their bond, making you root for them even more. Nyssa’s growth as a character, especially in dealing with her fears and feelings, is incredibly well done.

The World-Building:
The world-building remains top-notch. The addition of new elements like strange gods and deeper magick enhances the already rich setting. The political intrigue and the high stakes make the plot even more gripping.

The Romance:
If you were promised sapphic pirate fantasy realness, the payoff is here. It takes a while to get there, but the journey is absolutely worth it. The slow-burn romance with all its angst is beautifully executed, adding a significant emotional punch to the story.

Final Thoughts:
If you were on the fence about continuing with this series after "Unworthy," let me assure you—"Unbound" is a must-read. It’s darker, deeper, and an all-around incredible sequel that surpasses the first book in every way. This book truly is the ride of a lifetime, and I can’t recommend it enough.

I dived head-first into the world of Nyssa and Quinn and relished every moment of it. The series shines particularly with its relatable characters - set in a vibrant, modernistic world filled with adorable, opinionated magical technology, what nevertheless stood out to me was the handling of relationships; not just the wonderful slow burn between the main characters that is masterfully paced and feels thoroughly deserved when it moves into more than friendship. I especially loved the realistic handling of relationship histories and the concern for establishing consent. The adversaries are scary but not mindlessly evil, the protagonists fully-rounded and the side characters fun and memorable - this is one of the most enjoyable fantasies I have ever read, set in a queernormative society and with my kind of humour. 5 out of 5 my cup of tea.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Another amazing book by this author

It was full of adventures, emotions and surprises. I cried, I laughed and I was definitely addicted to this story. Well, I still am. There is one more book to read in the series. What can I say, another ”wow” from me. I have so much fun reading this series.

The prose, the unnecessary amount of angst that barely gets resolved, not to mention juvenile dialogue and a plot that is all over the place, all of it reminds me of early attempts at fanfiction when I was in my pre-teens. At this point in the series I have lost all interest in the main characters. Too much power trips, too much angst, too much illogical fighting and, honestly, way too much swearing. It is not necessary to use the word "fucking" that many times. No. What kept me reading, and what will probably make me read the third book, is... whatever you want to call the thing that may or may not be going on with Medias and Reece. I would have liked to see a lot more interaction between those two. I found their chapters much more interesting than all the rest.

Then again, obviously Medias has kept a secret or two, because they are her secrets to keep, by right, but those secrets are likely to create an unnecessary amount of angst and (illogical and stupid) blaming in the third book, so, yeah. We'll see what happens.

It’s no secret that I LOVED the first book in this series (you should 100% check it out!) or that I have purchased it in paperback 3 times. So getting an ARC copy was a fantastic birthday present.

It’s rare that a sequel is better than the first, but this book is one of those beautiful rare exceptions. The growth in writing style, narrative and characters all flow wonderfully from Unworthy to Unbound. The increase in spice and other adult themes are welcome and feel like they fit right in with the world set out in book one. The magic works without pages and pages of explanation and exposition, which is a pitfall of many a first time fantasy writer.
I took me a little longer to read this book than the first - by which I mean I read it over 5 days rather than 3, it was almost impossible to put down and I again had to lock my iPad in the car to prevent myself from ignoring my responsibilities and reading all day.

I cant wait to get my hands on a paperback copy when it’s officially released in a few weeks.

Congratulations @javodvarkawrites for another fantastic book.

Finally some smut ! Also they were annoyed at each other the whole time and then suddenly snogging ?? No build up whatsoever and yes we knew this would be a couple but there was no lead into it they just found each other annoying and suddenly they’re madly in love ? Bad writing. Not even a good plot to blame the bad romance as an afterthought

Overall I liked this book, although a few things bothered me, such as Suvi Rell being gagged and then talking again a few pages later, things that the editor should have caught.

To be honest I don't care about Nyssa and Quinn's relationship. I like them fine separately and as friends but in my opinion there's no chemistry at all. Nyssa had way more chemistry with Reece as far as I'm concerned, although I really like Reece and Medias together. Their chapters were by far my favorite part of the book.

Read the Kindle version and there were SO MANY typos. I have no idea how those went unnoticed or still haven’t been fixed. Anyways, a little bit too much going on in this one. They continuously flip flop between being captives to being on the run, it gets old. The slow burn wasn’t slow enough and they kissed out of NOWHERE, no build-up. I find the slow burn happening with the secondary characters, Reece and Medias, way more interesting. The smut is not for me, I truthfully didn’t know this series would contain any when I started it. It’s not bad, just not my thing.
