Sunday Brothers #1

Scegli Me (I Fratelli Sunday Vol. 1)

Rate this book
E come posso convincere Knox Sunday a... scegliere me?

I initially skipped this book, but since I loved book 2, I decided to give it another chance. I have to say that I liked Gage and Knox more in the second book. Their dynamics and the relationship development didn't work so well for me here. Gage was too OTT for me and Knox was kind of difficult for the most part.

I did enjoy learning more about the other members of the Sunday family, so I don't regret reading it. Though, to be honest, I'm not sure I would have picked book 2, had I read this one first.

Pick Me is book one in May Archer’s brand new series, Sunday Brothers. This is a M/M, age gap, grumpy/sunshine romance that made me smile, laugh out loud, swoon, sigh and just made me so happy. I absolutely loved it!!!

Gage Goodman is twenty four years old and grew up with his dad and older brothers in on a tiny island in the Florida Keys. Gage has always been good with technology and after college, he is ready to pursue his dreams of a career in a big city. But first he needs job experience and a job at Sunday Orchard is the perfect place to get it. It’s a temporary job in a beautiful setting and will give him time to find something permanent. But the real draw to this job was when he saw the family picture they had posted on their website. One particular person in that photo specifically drew his attention with his flannel shirt, beard and gorgeous smile. Because, yes, Gage might have s slight thing for lumberjacks!

Knox Sunday is thirty nine years old. He is forced to take a break from his high powered career in Boston due to some health setbacks and go home to his family’s ranch in Little Pippin Hollow, Vermont. While he’s there, he is helping to straighten out the Orchard’s financials. Knox is grumpy and growly and has no interest whatsoever in the sexy ray of sunshine that never stops talking manchild that he is now being forced to share an office and an apartment with.

Gage is convinced that he and Knox can enjoy some no strings fun while he is there and that it will help to improve Knox’s disposition. But try as he does, Knox is not having it. At the same time, though, Gage is falling in love with the quirky little town of Little Pippin Hollow and he adores the rest of the Sunday family. They took him right in and treat him as one of their own. He feels like be belongs there. And even though Knox won’t take him up on his offer, he can’t help but to fall for the big man. Because when he finally sees that smile, the one he saw in the photo, his heart does a little somersault and he knows he’s never going to be the same.

I don’t think I was even at the end of the first chapter before I was hopelessly in love with this book! I laughed out loud so many times. Gage was hilarious and sweet and just wonderful. As I got to know Knox, I couldn’t help but to love him too. His dry humor was everything. And I loved the banter between these two. This is one of those feel good books that just makes your heart happy. I’m so in love with this Sunday family. We get a very tiny peek at the next book which will be Knox’s brother, Webb’s book titled Hand Picked. I can’t wait!

Pick Me is a sweet, lower-angst, sexy, opposites-attract story about Gage Goodman (early-20s, cheerful, bright, tech genius) and Knox Sunday (late-30s, grumpy, lumberjack, financial investor).

Knox dislikes Gage on sight (or pretends he does). The truth is that Knox is attracted to Gage but refuses to acknowledge it, so he acts like Gage is the most annoying person in the universe (to be fair, Gage does babble constantly). Knox is on leave from his high-power job in Boston due to massive anxiety and panic attacks. He feels untethered and frustrated with himself and his life.

Gage thinks Knox should choose him for a fling because they could have the best, hottest sex together (and indeed they do). Gage isn't one to overthink things. He's relentlessly optimistic, helpful, and engaging. He does a lot of yoga stretches to entice Knox, but Knox holds firm.

Until he doesn't.

I enjoyed the slower burn and banter, not to mention Knox's dry sense of humor and the fab cast of supporting characters. There's mild relationship drama toward the end because Knox is a stubborn fool, but it doesn't linger.

The men get their tentative HEA in the last chapter, and the epilogue solidifies it.

Pick Pick Me. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely joyous and such a tonic

I was feeling sorry for myself with a horrible head cold when I started reading Pick Me and it was just the tonic I needed.

It's basically joy in book form and had so many of my favourite tropes in one story that I was utterly spoilt.

The best sunshine one versus the ultimate grumpy one with a similar level of small town vibes as the Whispering Key series it's a spin-off from, great family vibes, humour that just works gorgeously for me, and it's also ridiculously hot.

OMG it might take Knox Sunday a while to wise up to the bounty that is Gage Goodman right under his nose (and in his bed, on his knees, in the shower- you get the drift) but when he does it's explosive.

I adored this pair and the rest of the Sundays and I cannot wait to see what's happening with Webb and his "xxxxxxxx" (no spoilers here!)

Loved it 😁

I had ended the previous connected series Whispering Keys on a low note but was lured by the promise of sexy, apple picking, plaid wearing lumbersexuals into trying this one. Sadly it wasn’t for me. However, I want to note that I think this will be a big hit with many and it could very well be a case of it being me and not the book. The reviews I’ve read are mostly positive. So, as always, feel free to ignore me. 🙃

However, if you are interested in a different perspective then keep reading. 🙂

🍎 There was an abundance of talking in this. So much discussion of every little thing. The first 40% moved so slow. I can do slow burn with the best of them but this wasn’t really that. It was kind of just apple orchard life. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Side note: It did make me crave some apple treats ASAP. I gotta get over to our local Apple Hill SOON. I’m coming for you apple crumble!!
🍎 For me there was entirely too much time spent on side characters. It’s not that I didn’t like them. I was even intrigued by future book pairings. But lots of the plot was centered around them and I felt it took away from the main couple. Also there were so many of them!
🍎 Meddling. A peeve of mine. I wouldn’t put the meddling on the same scale as the previous series or O’Leary but it was definitely there and was most definitely irritating. (Note: I did enjoy O’Leary despite the meddling. Or maybe at that time I didn’t have as big of an aversion to it? 🤔 What seems to go hand in hand with meddling is an overly quirky town. I’d say this town is quirky light compared to her other series but it has the potential to go full on quirky in future books so this wasn’t really a concern for me yet.
🍎 Possibly because of the last point, I have to admit I didn’t click with the guys. They were very sweet and cute but I wasn’t invested. In fact, I skimmed the last 30% or so.

Make of this what you will. I plan on reading a sample of the next one. I’m not quite ready to quit on May yet. Mainly because I have a soft spot for the O’Leary books. But if I don’t gel with the next one, it might be time to throw in the towel. That’s not meant in a bad way towards her books. More that my reading tastes and needs might not make us a good fit anymore. And that’s ok.

**I did originally contemplate not rating this because I’m aware some of issues are a me thing. However, not all of them are so I did decide to rate it.**

I've been in a reading slump lately, and this one was too cute NOT to bring me out of it. It had just enough of a good story, good tension, and nice smexy times to get me out of the funk. Definitely enjoyable and recommended!

Aw, I adored this.

Gage, the third brother on Whispering Key, is off to Vermont in this. I thought he'd get his own Whispering Key book, but instead he gets the start of a spin-off in a whole new setting with a whole new town of interesting characters and of course a hot group of brothers ;) called the Sundays.

It worked for Gage. He loves his hometown, but he never quite fit right, it was never 100% perfect for him, so he moved away after he finished school to an apple orchard in Vermont to help with computer science type stuff, which is his thing.

Of course he's instantly attracted to Knox, the older Sunday brother at 39. Gage himself is 24, so there's an age-gap. Also Knox has his own personal issues, which makes him lash out at Gage when he first meets him to keep at arms length, and they start out this book snarking at each other.

But Gage is a sunshine-y, sweet and kind man, and Knox can't resist his charms for too long.

There comes some tension with Knox being so resistant to Gage at first, and then when he gives in being resistant to a relationship, and then Gage having planned to move on to another job after a few months at the Sunday Orchard, in a big city like Boston - where Knox used to work before he came home - and if Gage will do that if maybe Knox might go back there, but is it what they truly want...

I loved these two together. They had good chemistry, and they played off each other really well. Sometimes age-gaps do not have to be a a deterrent to a relationship, and these two showed why. They might be 15 years apart, but that didn't matter. Gage might be young, but he's still a full on adult. None of their problems came from Gage acting too immature for Knox or anything like that. They were just normal relationship problems.

I loved getting to know these two, and the secondary characters as well. We're definitely getting Webb and Luke's story next, I believe (no way is it not Luke with that ending, it's gotta be him haha) and then Hawk and Jack. I wonder if we'll meet the other two brothers who were absent in this one too - I expect them to maybe get some love stories too? Just maybe? ;)

I loved this, it was just perfectly fluffy and sweet and fun, with a great main couple I fell in love with. Two massive thumbs up from me! I am SO excited for Webb and Luke's book, omg. Can't wait!

I can’t even tell you how much I love this family 😭😭 I might even have loved this more the second time around?!
Love love LOVE Knox and Gage and now I wanna slowly reread the whole series.
Knox being exasperated and talking to god/ the ceiling when Gage was being difficult was my fav thing this time.
Also: the dance scene, fucking hot.

Damn, the joy this has brought me is unreal 🥹
Michael Dean isn’t my fav, but I got used to him and him narrating Knox was hot, ngl. ❤️‍🔥

Original review

Oh maaaan this was just… FUN!
What a funny, fluffy, fantastic, feel-good story. We have „grumpy, loving, sexy, protective, overopinionated, adorable, infuriating, encouraging, gorgeous, dumbass“ lumberjack Knox and „amazing, annoying, adorable, snarktastic, stupid T-shirt wearing, cowphobic sweetheart“ Gage and together they were everything.
It definitely is a slow burn with a LOT of UST, and I was here for it!

The snark and banter in this one was off the charts and I laughed out loud throughout the entire book. The setting in the orchard, the whole Sunday family side characters and the small town vibes couldn’t be more perfect. This was definitely more low-angst, apart from Knox‘ very relatable (at least for me) mental health struggles (the scene where his brothers supported him through one of his panic attacks really touched me and I teared up). I just fell in love with the whole package of this book!

This was my first May Archer read and I can’t wait to continue this series and get to know the rest of the family and their stories. And after that dive into the Whispering Key series, that’s how much I vibed with her fun and heartwarming writing and storytelling. ‚Pick Me‘ instantly became one of my fav‘s and I’m sure I’ll reread this one a lot when I need a little pick-me-up 😉

If you like slow progressing and predictable plots with a big and meddling family and a lot of fluff and insecure characters, then this is a good choice. It’s good written and I enjoyed reading it. And I definitely had to laugh a lot. Knox and Gage together are just totally funny, but unfortunately it takes quite a while before they get together.
And then it takes an eternity for them to admit their feelings for each other.
My goodness, this book really tested my non-existent patience, but it was pleasantly annoying nonetheless.
Fortunately, there is always the occasional sex scene and at the end there was the perfect romantic conclusion to the whole thing.

Knox wrapped his arms around my waist and spun me in a circle. “Christ, I love you. In thirty-nine years, you are the single best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“Just wait and see how the next thirty-nine go.” I wiggled my eyebrows. “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

Such a feel-good romance.

--------------------------

This was fun!

I wasn’t too sure if I was in the right mood for this, since I hadn’t been impressed with the first book in the Whispering Key series.

But this was more fun than I thought it would be!

At first it was a little as I expected, just a tad boring, even though I did like the characters.

I figured there would be sex early on in a friends-with-benefits kind of situation, but then the scene at the club happened and it was so funny that I was glad things between Gage and Knox progressed after that and not before. It was worth the wait.

Overall I really liked this and there were even a few scenes that had me laughing out loud.

rereading via audio made me up my rating from 3 to 4 stars 💗

It’s not that Michael Dean did such an outstanding job narrating - he wasn’t bad, but he’ll never have the same place in my ranking like… say… Nick J. Russo, or Greg Boudreaux. But he kept me good company, and listening made me smile more than once. And I’ve been in the mood for one of May’s romances, so it hit the spot and I “felt” the connection between Knox and Gage a lot more. Although - show me ONE person in Pippin Hollow who wouldn’t fall for Gage ❤️

Original review:

3 stars for about 75% of the book, the ending sweet 4 stars.

I’d probably have liked it more if I’d not just read book 2 before this one, a book I absolutely devoured and adored.

It’s the story of Gage, a twenty-something, who comes to Little Pippin Hollow to write some apps for the Sunday Orchard. Knox, the oldest Sunday brother, is the grump to Gage‘s sunshine, and fights his attraction to him for quite a while - for about 50% of the book to be precise.

I liked Knox, and I absolutely loved Gage, but somehow I didn’t „feel“ their connection until the very end. Especially Knox only seemed to make steps in the right direction when pushed by jealousy, or when he feared to lose Gage. If you ask me - Gage was a saint for putting up with all the push and pull, and behave a lot more maturely than 39 year old Knox.

What I loved, too: all the side characters, and the sweet ending.

A solid start for this series, but not nearly as good as Webb‘s book.

Awww, this ended up being really cute.
I haven't read the Whispering Keys series yet, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything.
Loved the small town and orchards are my favorite!
Knox was a grouch...but a lovable one.
Gage was like a hummingbird...flitting here and there.
The sexual tension was SO thick it felt like we were swimming in it.
And when they combust it was like a minor earthquake. I could feel the tremors!
The family is in full effect but I adored all of them.
There's a little frustration felt by all but it was fulfilling by the end.
Sassy, sexy, and oh-so-sweet...I'm so glad Knox picked Gage.

A very solid book with engaging characters, an enjoyable dynamic and all-around good vibes.

Gage has just finished his degree and wants to get away from the little island he's from and into the big smoke. Somehow the logical first stop is a job at this farm - I am questioning his sanity at this point but that's ok, I'll roll with it.

He learns he's sharing a flat and office with Knox, the gorgeous man who caught his eye on the brochure. Gage makes an excited introduction but Knox is grouchy as all hell and they really don't get off on the right foot. Gage makes it his duty to get a rise out of Knox, who he slowly discovers has a soft and funny side.

I've now read a couple of May Archer's books and find I quite like the writing style, in particular the banter between the characters.

I'm a little less sold on the large families, though after about 15% the names started to sink in. The universe is all very interconnected and I caught a few references to characters from other series'; some may feel obliged to read them all but I do think the romance here stands well on its own.

The meddling was thankfully relatively limited, though I really wasn't a fan of Webb and don't plan to read his book. I was much more curious about 2 other characters who I clearly pegged as a thing and indeed they are the stars of book 3.

I enjoyed the mental health aspect and thought it was well done, in particular the fact that as supportive Gage might be, he's quite clear that Knox' anxiety isn't going to be magically cured, and insists that he work on it with his therapist.

There's a bit of avoidable drama, but it does all settle relatively nicely, and I thought they were a good match at the end of the day. I enjoyed reading this and will continue to pick up books by this author.

Reread/relisten May 2022:

Same rating as before. Compared to all the Goodman books so far this was okay. Toby and Beale still hold the crown for cutest!

4 stars

After coming off the high of Beale and Toby’s book this one was good but to me the stubbornness of Knox was very annoying at times.

But with that said, this series seems like it is gearing up to be just as good as Whispering Keys!!

I can’t wait for book two!!! May hurry up and get here so I can read it!

3.0 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

You all know I’m a sucker for May Archer books. She always provides me the perfect comfort reads, and Pick Me falls nicely into her lexicon.

If you’ve read the Whispering Key series this story follows the youngest Goodman, 24 yr old Gage, as he embarks on a new job in a small Vermont town. While at said job he is forced to room with a grumpy 39 yr old big, bearded financial wiz. This story has a bit of everything - forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, age-gap, etc.

Was this the perfect book? Um…no. This wasn’t even the perfect May book, but I still had an enjoyable time reading. I’d get into my not favorite things about it, but honestly I mostly don’t care 🤷🏻‍♀️😆 If you enjoy most all May Archer books, you’ll have fun with this one. If you’ve had minimally selective to no positive experiences reading her in the past, this might not be your cup of tea.

Overall I liked it and I’m excited for all future Sunday Brother adventures.

I fell in love with this book.
The characters, the Sunday family, the town, and especially Gage. ❤️
I LOVE a hyperactive ball of sunshine, and that is exactly what we get in Gage Goodman. So full of joy and humour.

This was a lovely small town grumpy/sunshine romance.
I'm so invested in the whole family and Little Pixie Hollow.
Starting the next book in the series straight away.

Heartfelt and sexy, that's how I'd describe this first book in the Sunday Brothers series - my first novel by May Archer. She gifted us a great opposites-attracted couple with a blazing chemistry and some good reflections about like goals.

The main characters were well crafted. Behind his gruffy behaviour, Knox was caring and thoughtful💕 He didn't realize how much his family loved him and how deeply he needed them. It was very sweet to witness the Sunday family's dynamic, especially the annoying parts, like the matchmaking and smiling extortion (Emma is the best!). After having to temporarily leave a job that defined him ("I am my job", as he said), Knox went through the motion, feeling detached and only waiting to go back... until he met Gage who was infuriating, but so adorable. He helped him understand and overcome his problems, with love and tenacity.

Gage was such a big ray of sunshine. I love his kind of characters! He had an instant crush on Knox - and by instant, I mean WAY earlier than you could expect. You'll see😉 Nothing could beat Knox's dry humour, but Gage was still very funny and sweet. He immediately found a place inside the Sunday family, building a great relationship with Aiden especially. Despite his young age - would say Knox - he had a very insightful look on life and already knew what he wanted - and not - from it. As it was my first book by this author, I didn't know anything about the other Goodman brothers. I still appreciated how they made a few appearances here. They seemed fun, so I'll keep the Whispering Key series in mind for later readings.

Beside the love story, the book worked a lot around Knox's anxiety problems and mental health in general. I think the topic was quite well treated, without giving fast solutions and unbelievable miracles. It was a work in progress. Life goals and the importance of not losing oneself for false dreams were also a big YES for me. As someone whose profession doesn't offer a lot of stable positions (archaeologist), I understood how people could easily end up in a wrong place mentally, pushing themselves through jobs they don't even like anymore.

Overall I'd easily recommend this novel for its fun and sexy sides, but also for the deeper and well thought aspects of the story. However I remind you of a TW for mental health issues.

Pick Me - MM - Age Gap - Sunday Brothers Book 1

Gage Goodman 24, is my favourite kind of guy in MM reads, great sense of humour, snarky, sassy, sarcastic, sunshiny, intelligent gorgeous too.

I laughed so much at his foibles in relation to cows when he arrived in Little Pippin Hollow, and later, on a snowy road, when a cow ‘jumped out and attacked him’, hilarious.

Gage is from a little island off Florida, but has big dreams of getting a job in High Tech company in Boston or New York. But with no experience he decides to take the job advertised at Little Pippin Hollow in Vermont, not too far from either dream locations Job wise.

The owners want to upgrade their ancient website and streamline access to HR, Finances and monitoring Production reports etc. it will be a temporary job for about 3 months.

Gage researched the business on line and sees that the Sunday family own and run the business and it has photos of the family on the site.
Webb Sunday and his three brothers, Knox, Porter and Hawk, their Uncle Drew plus Emma his sister and Aidan who is Webb’s son by his ex wife Amanda.

Gage’s attention is immediately drawn to one man in the photo who is smiling broadly directly into the camera. A tall, bearded ‘lumberjack’, Gage’s ‘kryptonite’.

When Gage arrives he gets a very warm welcome and shown to his accommodations over the Farm Shop which he will share with one of the brothers. When he walks into the apartment he bumps into his new roommate and he’s amazed and delighted to recognise the ‘lumberjack’ from the photo.

However, all is not well because ‘lumberjack’ Knox Sunday 39, makes it clear he is not happy with Gage’s arrival. He continues to be rude and he doesn’t like Gage sharing his apartment or his office space.

I loved the setting of Little Pippin Orchards in Vermont and the small town is full of interesting, nosey characters that add to the storyline. There are 2 other books in this series and a bonus novella, these are the stories of Knox’s brothers, Webb and a side character, Hawk and side character, all of whom feature in book 1. The extra novella is about two secondary characters that Gage and Knox met in a pub.

‘Pick Me’ is a lovely family orientated story, based in a small close knit community. I read it in a few hours as it really drew me in.

No angst, but one character has Mental Health issues, (Panic Attacks due to job related stress).

I’ve read a few of May Archer’s books now and have never been disappointed, I’ve already downloaded the rest of the series and look forward to catching up with the goings on in Little Pippin Hollow, Vermont.

4 stars!! 😍 This was a very low angst, sweet enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story. ❤️ Both Knox and Gage are likable MCs and I loved the small town, big and nosy family background with a lot of sassy banter.. 😉 There was no real angst or sadness in the story.. just a few misunderstandings that needed to be cleared towards the end. All in all it’s a perfect fluff book for when you need a little pick-me-up type of book to cheer you up. 💝. This was my first full May Archer book, I have read a few of her collaborations with Lucy Lennox and they were quite fun. I would say, her style is similar to LL. The steam and sizzle is a little on the medium side however, this is more like a rom-com that way.

The first in a new series which navigates us away from the Whispering Key books, though there are a few references to / very brief cameos by Gage's family in Florida. Overall, I think Pick Me is an enjoyable light read and I'll keep an eye out for the next Sunday brother to get his HEA.

Still as good

I don't know what's going on with Kindle these days, but I had a book that I have never read appear to me as 99% completed, and this one on 1%, but after a few dozen pages, I realised I had indeed read this one, but just did my review over on Storygraph. I enjoyed it a lot, but never got to read the rest, which, oh well, who's really worried about the size of their TBR, huh?

Favorite highlights:

Confession time: I had jerked off to the mental image of Knox’s laughter the night before. And, yes, that might actually have been the weirdest, least sexual thing I’d ever jerked off to. And, yes, thank you, I found that concerning also.

And even though Goodman was the bane of my existence—and I was still almost positive I wasn’t going to sleep with him—his open, cheerful nature made life fun. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d woken up interested to see what the day held like I had recently.

I sighed. “You think it makes you weak to talk about your feelings?” “No! Not at all. I just…” His mouth firmed and he shook his head once. “It does no good to dwell on negative shit. You’ve gotta push through. Keep looking forward. Remember people are counting on you. You know?” He sipped his drink. “That’s a life lesson for you, Goodman. Free of charge.” “Wow.” I leaned my head on my hand. “That advice is worth about as much as I paid for it.”
