The Council #2

Shattered Secrets

Rate this book
They had tried to come for me. They thought I was still weak, damaged.

Someone had tried to kill me...again. I was getting tired of this. They hadn’t been prepared for me to build relationships, to no longer be alone. They continued to underestimate me. I loved proving them wrong.

Secrets threaten to shake me, to break me and as I uncover more of my past, each step leads me closer to the Council. I’m just not sure I want to know anymore. Their reach extends beyond anything I’d been prepared for.

People from my past return, shaking me to my core. I thought I was learning to trust, but with each revelation, I’m left wondering if I know anyone at all. Some relationships are growing, but others I had thought were solid, seem to dissipate into nothing.

Training with Henry has been my only solace, and falling back into our routines strengthens me. The expo is looming, and it may be our best chance to put a stop to the Council. We just have to find a way to work together—all of us.

I came to TAS to find the truth, but it just might finally shatter me.

Shattered Secrets has been on my TBR for ages, but after rereading Damaged Dreams I HAD to continue the series!!!
WHERE TO BEGIN.....
Let me start off by stating I like the addition of Tyler, he complements the group well. I really want Elias back with Sawyer and the guys...
I felt bad for Sawyer, at every turn new secrets were being uncovered... I cant wait to see how this all turns out in the next book.

This book lacks a sense of urgency. For example: At the end of book 1, Sawyer receives a box with a letter from her mother. There's strangely no urgency for her to open the box. There was an attempt at her life just after she got the box, so she was in hospital and all, but you'd think that one of the first things she'd do after she got out of hospital would be to open the box because firstly, it was from her beloved mom, and secondly, there are hints that whatever is inside would help to solve the puzzle. But nooooooo. Days pass and the box is left unopened for about a week. She doesn't open the box till chapter 20. Chapter 20!!!

Things move so slowly in this book, and there's no escalation of events. Sawyer only has that one incident where her life is threatened. It doesn't really feel like there's any real danger. Plus, after the attempt on Sawyer's life, and discovering the brake lines on her Vespa were most likely cut, she and the guys don't seem to have been extra careful. There's no discussion of taking extra precautions, of letting each other know where they are or where they're going, of one of them accompanying her wherever she goes. Nothing. It's like they don't think there's a threat at all. They don't take it seriously. They have a lot of discussions about the RH relationship, but don't talk about keeping Sawyer alive and safe!

The story keeps getting interrupted by sex, including crossing swords. In Book 1, we already knew that Soren and Rey (Henry) had a thing for each other, but in this book, two of the other guys develop feelings for each other, too. And I feel that there are too many men and they are too difficult to keep track of, because they're too similar. The only ones that really stand out are Mateo because he's shy and nerdy, and Oliver, because he's brash and cocky. I can't even remember what they all do except that they're instructors, but what subjects they teach are as good your guess as mine.

I can sense the connection between Sawyer and Rey (Henry), since they had that childhood history. I can sense some kind of connection between Sawyer and Mateo, although it seems like it's mostly her who's seeking him out? When it comes to Rhett, I don't know... in book 1 I felt like it was mostly physical attraction since they both immediately eye-fucked each other when he picked her up at the airport. As for Soren, I somehow feel like he's more Rey's than Sawyer's because he has loved Rey for a long time. And I don't really feel that Sawyer connected with Oliver. Her relationship with Oliver is a bit like her relationship with Elias, where it's been mostly distant and her feeling annoyed with him. So I don't get how she suddenly has feelings for Oliver? Once again, I think it's just physical attraction, cos she thinks he's hot? Finally, since Tyler was thrown into the mix at the last-minute, we never got to see his relationship with Sawyer develop. They had been friends with benefits in high school, but it sounds like Sawyer never caught feelings for him, so where did this sudden I love yous come from?

I feel like the interactions are a bit stilted and unnatural, something I observed in book 1 as well. It's weird when the guys put on a dance for her and she misinterprets it and thinks they mean it negatively. Then she just walks out of the apartment into the snow without even putting on shoes. It's kind of silly and over the top. And why would Asa give her something from his mom by leaving it in her room? Why not place it directly in her hands? And then she forgets about it or doesn't see it so she never opens it? Some things are just so odd.

In fact, the whole concept of the Council and the Academy is kinda odd. I feel like the Council is supposed to feel sinister, but although they're so powerful, they don't realise who Sawyer is or don't already know she's at the school? At this moment, since NOTHING is happening, I don't feel like the Council is to be feared at all!

Things fall into place too easily and some things are accepted without proof. They're trying to figure out who are Agency and who are Council and it just feels like they trust too easily. No one has to provide any evidence that they are trustworthy. And Sawyer's mother used Sariah's birthday as the code to the locked box? Really?!?!?! Talk about being secure! Her mother went to so much effort to make sure the contents of the box got to her safely, but used a lame-ass code that anyone could've figured out in a second if the box had fallen into the wrong hands. This wasn't smart and wasn't believable, considering she knew enough to write her journal using a cipher!

The plotting and writing was kinda lacklustre. It didn't have me on the edge of my seat. There's no tension of sensing that Sawyer's in danger or that the Council is menacing. What little tension there keeps getting cut and dissipates due being interrupted by people stopping to have sex.

Kris Butler did not disappoint with book 2 of the series!

I thought the first book was filled with mystery and juiciness, but it has nothing on this book. Shattered Secrets is filled to the brim with drama, secrets, and spiciness. Just when I thought I could start piecing together the puzzle that is Sawyer’s life - the story zigged when I thought it would zag.

Throughout the twists and turns I loved to see the raw emotions between Sawyer and her family. Sawyer remains a strong, lovable FMC and the guys continue to surprise me with their level of emotion, communication, and loyalty.

I cannot wait for Book 3!

I was completely shocked by the first book and I came into this one not expecting to have so much thrown at me, but I was left with a shocked expression. The next book cannot come fast enough! I had plenty of my original questions answered but after reading this book I have so many more than I ever thought possible. The way everything ended has me on the edge of my seat.
Loved the character growth from Mateo in this installment. I was happy to see him finding his place and feel like he fit in more. He became more open to the guys and allowed Sawyer to show him that it was ok to be yourself. I loved that that was a huge lesson for all the guys. Overall, all the growth between the men and Sawyer was beautifully wrote but I’m still heartbroken over Elias. Because of that I will be holding out for answers until the third book comes out.
The ups and downs that Sawyer went through, it felt like I was right there with her going through it. I related with her on so many levels that I really just wanted to reach through my tablet, give her a huge hug and tell her that everything was going to be ok. She is just such a beautiful character and I want everything to work out for her. I was a little taken aback when Tyler entered the picture, that came from left field for me, but I think he is a great fit and can’t wait to learn more about him.
The title for this book is perfect, the number of secrets uncovered and hidden was just amazing and scary at the same time. So many things were uncovered, I wondered if they would ever stop unraveling. At one point I was wondering if our characters would be able to take anymore things jumping out at them and going ‘BOO!’ Here I thought the biggest worry was Sawyer getting into her scooter accident.
As with the first book everything was pieced together wonderfully and after so many loose ends were tied up, we were given new confusing information. I loved that nothing was getting lost or left out or left hanging for too long without coming back to it. Hoping for the best with Sawyer and her men in the next book!

OMG if you love Damaged Dreams then you are going to FLOVE Shattered Secrets. Let me tell you the drama, the secrets, the suspense are in full effect in book two. First and foremost Sawyer is one of the most loved characters I have ever read. This girl has been through so much and when the hits keep coming she takes them like the badass she is and keeps it pushing. Does she have her moments where she breaks down and need to regroup absolutely but she doesn’t let it drag her into the deep dark hole. Honestly it helps that she has the most amazing men in her life that care for her and want her to be happy, loved and cherished. In SS we get to see the relationships grow between all of the characters both as couples and individuals and as a family. Let me tell you, you will get all the feels in SS, full on laugh out loud moments especially with Sawyer’s inner monologue and then you will have tears streaming down your face. Oh and the steamy scenes if you thought they were hot in book 1 hold onto your panties because Kris turned the notch up to 1000 this go around! I thought I would be able to choose which scene was my favorite but nope they are all fire and the MM scenes are fantastically written they make your heart melt as well as your panties well that pretty much applies to all the steamy scenes man they are good.

Let’s not for the secrets lord the secrets will get you every time. Keeping things from one another will get you every time. Everyone works better as a team instead of going off on your own. You get tons of answers to questions you had from book 1 but you also have plenty more questions waiting for answers. I absolutely love that the author keeps you completely engaged the entire time and just when you think you have something figured out or you have a running theory in your mind WAM you are hit with something else that has you second guessing everything. There is so much mystery and drama which I love. Kris has this way of leaving you wanting and needing more as soon as you read the last page and she definitely had me cussing her out on a few occasions and wanting to strangle a character or two as well as wanting to throw my kindle at the wall.

Honestly I am not very good at articulating my words to express how much I loved this book so I hope my words do it and the author justice because Kris Butler is amazing. MUST READ!!!

Kris Butler has dropped the mike pple! Her second book, Shattered Secrets has blown me away! Her debut novel, Damaged Dreams, as you know, was gripping.
Shattered Secrets, cements Kris Butler, as an author, who is diabolical! She left this reader howling at the end.
All questions were answered from Damaged Dreams, but as I got to the end I did pm Kris and say nooooo! You can't leave it there ! What happens next? Where's book 3?
What i loved in this book was the humour threaded through the story, there were so many funny moments and I did choke on food as I read one part in particular. The cake scene was deliciously funny.
The sex scenes were OMG! Kris made me blush! They were so beautifully written and HAWT! I just was in awe! There was a MM scene, in my opinion it was tastefully written and felt natural to me.
The way the tension was ramped up was so well done, and I honestly had so much enjoyment from wondering what happens next. Kris is a master is being unpredictable and leaving the reader wondering, and you can never predict what happens next.
One thing I really applaud is how well the author highlights grief and the many faces it wears. Mental health is so strongly advocated for and highlights the importance of why people should reach out and talk.
Also, I love the maturity of the characters and how they focused on building their relationship and friendships to success and the importance of letting pple in and opening up, and the vulnerability of what being human is.
There is so many aspects of what worked for me in this book. The above are just a few.
Kris sets a fast pace and she really draws the reader on with her expert precision.
So yes, diabolical is a word used to describe Kris Butler, and I stand by my assessment. Challenge me if you dare 😀

Let me start with saying ❄️I beta read this book and was very touched to be considered to do so, Thank You Kris Butler. Also, it is very eye opening the process of writing books, honestly it is their blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifice that goes into their stories, and truly felt that this book was so much more than the first, because introductions are done. The tone is set, the plot is thickening, and the anticipation is increasing. It is reverse harem, why choose romance, with MM, MF, and MMF scenes.

What I liked about the book is that it shines a light on sexual fluidity, curiosity, of what is lust, and what do you want to pursue, Is it just the moment, or do you want that person in every way. The communication amongst the group is mature, and honestly when I read the first book it lead me to take a chance on more RH romances.

Sawyer, you are sooo easy to love more than you realize. I am so happy that not only does she have a place amongst this group, but that her voice is so loud in Shattered Secrets. The guys are not only starting to develop more but they are leaning on one another. Men do cry, men also have curiosities in sex that they want to explore, and yes men do like hugs! Everyone has a voice and has a right to feel what they feel. It’s a great nod to mental health.

Secrets at every turn are not only revealed it feels richer. We are so close to figuring things out and it is so satisfying but we want more!!! It’s like chocolate cake its so rich, but once its gone I just want one more slice. (So give it to us!!! LoL)

I think if you liked the first book you will love this book more. Again, things are already in place. SS takes you on the journey of daring you to love yourself first, love who you love, and to uncover the danger that is threatening your family.

A bit edgier. Shattered Secrets is lip biting good. The sex scenes are fire. Once some secrets are revealed your anticipation for more is going to put you over the edge. Kris Butler upped the emotions & the players!

And again, when you think there isn't anything Kris Butler can do to make the book more mysterial, she does it again, and again, just to prove you wrong.

If you thought you knew all the secrets in the book, well let me tell you, you are wrong, so dead wrong.

Then she has the audacity to ask "Are you on pins and needles already?". In this series it doesn't stop. When you think you have it all figured out, something else gets discovered. But is it wrong to say I like it, more like love it?

It is so well written that you feel with the characters, their broken pasts and traumatic incidents, the love for one another, ...

I love how we get all the answers from the question off book 1, but it seems that there are still some left unanswered.

And here I am trying to write a review at 1 am to explain how amazing this book and story is. Well if I gave sleep up for this it has to be special.

If you like an amazing adventure and story I really suggest you read this book because it will blow your mind away, you will be obsessed by every detail till it drives you insane (in a good kind of way).

Kris Butler you have more than earned my respect to you as a fabulous writer once again. I can't see what you have for us and Sawyer and the gang, for the final book.

Wow this book/series has EVERYTHING I love about a series. It takes off running and does not stop. These characters pull at your heart-strings. Everything about them. They are all coming from broken pasts and traumatic occurrences that have shaped them and its incredible to see how they are growing. I love that the author does not do it instantly. I also love that they are not magically perfect. She hits on mental illness so so well and it actually made so much sense. This 2nd book had soooo much happen. So many questions were answered and so many more characters were introduced and I was there for it.. It truly was amazing. The interactions between the guys and Sophie were amazing. There were disagreements, misunderstandings, new people to deal with but it flowed amazingly.
We see Sophie recovering again from another situation and the guys rally around her. The steaminess of this book was off the charts, OMG i want to give examples but I dont want to spoil it, just be ready for some hotness. I laughed out loud at the prologue and then through out the book I literally was wheezing it was truly hilarious.. I loved it so much. This series is incredible. If you like an amazing plot/storyline with steaminess, action and suspense, this series is for you. A MUST READ. It does end on a cliffy so be prepared for that. I will be sad to see the last book come through but I need to know what happens!!!!!!!

Wow!! This book was more than you could ever imagine. It had me laughing in one chapter to bawling my eyes out at the next. I absolutely loved the emotional roller coaster that it took you on. It made you feel like you truly connected to all the characters. Especially Sawyer. I truly loved getting a lot of the answers that we had from book one and can't wait to see what happens in the final book of this series. The author truly out did herself with this book. I loved the new addition to the family Tyler. He added an unexpected need to the story that you didn't even realize was missing but it was perfect. The end will have you doing a WTF scream but in a good way because it definitely leaves you wanting more ASAP. I can not tell you how amazing it was to have the emotions come through so well with the written words. You could practically feel everything the characters were going through or portraying with their stories. It was phenomenal. I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Kris Butler for such an amazing series so far that has touched so many people. Your words and book world are what so many people have needed to read even if they didn't realize it until after they have finished it.

This book is full of raw emotion that has you feeling everything from laughter, grief, anxiety, sadness, and love. The characters show that it’s okay to not always feel strong, and leaning on others doesn’t make you weak. Vulnerability is hard but the reward is worth it.

This crew keeps going with each punch in the gut they get. So many secrets are revealed only to have you questioning everything. Suspense around every corner, you start wondering who you can trust.

This book amps up the ante in a beautiful and broken story of love, friendship and family as they all search for the thing that binds them—love.

Steam so hot you’ll be breathless, multi-POV, MM, and all kinds of emotions. Everything you could want in a romantic suspense with the backdrop of hot athletes.

A fantastic second book in the Council Series by Kris Butler. I love Saywer's relationship(s) with the guys and this book made me laugh at several points.
Starting off were Damaged Dreams left off, Shattered Secrets starts of with the guys reaction to Sawyer's accident and goes from there with further explorations of the complex dynamics between the characters.
I was once again hooked from the beginning.
And omg the sex scenes are on fire!! So damm hot!! Threesomes and Voyeurs/exhibitionist.
Plus you learn more about The Council, Sawyer's family and another party at play.
I thoroughly enjoyed this second book and am eagerly awaiting the third.

This is book 2 of this series and it just keeps getting better!! I love that we get to know every character a little deeper as the story progresses and how each person grows throughout. Full of twists and turns, sexy times and self discovery, even mystery & murder. Kris Butler has done an amazing job of bringing this story to life and I can't wait to see what kind of ending book 3 will bring! This one was one hell of a cliffy...haven't decided if I love her or hate her for it yet🤣. Heads-up, there are MF, MM, and MFM relationships within the harem. Very tastefully done!!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thankyou to the author, Kris Butler, for providing a copy of Shattered Secrets (The Council Series book 2). I have reviewed honestly.

Sawyer and her boys are determined to take down the delectable and ever present Council. With our favourite characters returning and new ones joining the scene, Shattered Secrets is sizzling hot, sinister and staggering.

Shattered Secrets features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Contemporary romance
○ Reverse harem/polyamory
○ Second chance romance
○ New adult
○ Sports romance
○ Winter sports
○ Secret corporations
○ MM, MF and MMF scenes

My overall rating for Shattered Secrets is…

5 Stars!

The sinister plots hiding behind a tender contemporary romance shook me in the first book and continues to blow me away in the sequel. It's shocking, really, how Butler combines the two unlikely scenarios into one big blockbuster. Shattered Secrets was the perfect sequel to Damaged Dreams. I live for the sexual exploration and acceptance that occurs in this series. Now the characters, they are just perfection! I love absolutely every one of our mains and the exquiste and poetic dynamics that connect them. The way Butler has written this book has me unquestionably accepting my own place in the special family Sawyer and her boys have made.

If I could give this book more stars, I would. That ending 🤯 I may or may not of cursed on Kris and then messaged her to say I want book three. I regret nothing 🤓

The complex dynamics between all the relationships both romantic and platonic is so complex and emotional. They are possessive and consuming but never controlling. They aren’t easy but never harshly judgemental either. *chefs kiss*

With RH I always have a fav guy, even when I try not to I still always like one just a little bit more. But damn it, with all these guys I just love them all for different reasons. Even when I want to throat punch them, I still want to hug/kiss them too.

This series is so fucking good.

I really liked the first book even though it was medium burn and the relationship building was not really as fast as they started something. But this book was worse in the smut department. After reading it I still have the feeling that 80% of this book was about smut, but rationally it might have been 60%. At some point I started skipping the smutty scenes, because they were too much. Thinking back about the storyline I think I sometimes didn’t see it because of relationship drama and smut. Most of it was played out after 80%. And the build up of the story line was not consistent, as at the beginning there was not really much. I do not want to go into the details, but if you want to know you can look into the Summery at the end, but it is a very detailed summery with many spoilers.
On the plus side:
There is a great overview of the persons in the book, but I did not see Aldridge family (not sure if I missed them). Also the people from the council and the Agency are listed.

This book was a intense ride. Where to begin. So many manipulations and truths discovered but still not enough to connect all the dots. Swayers character is amazingly strong to go through all she has and still be a functioning human being. I love how everyone involved is damaged in someway and together they fix the pieces either missing or lost. Make sure to read in order and get ready for the ride of your life.

This book sucked me right in. The storyline and characters are so captivating you just want to keep reading. I love the dynamic between all of the characters. The author writes in a way that makes you connect to each character and I feel right along with them. You get some answers from the first book, and there are some more curveballs thrown in. Can’t wait for book 3!

WoW! I’m not proud of this but I yelled, screamed, laughed, and cried while reading this book. If someone doesn’t warn you, I will. This book will put through a ringer and take you on a roller coaster of raw emotions and leave you with more questions as secrets are revealed. You finally get some answers from the questions Kris left us with and there MIGHT be a new player from her past that emerges. Holy Moses, I can’t say enough good things about this book but I also don’t want to give it away. The steam was off the charts and there were a few times I had to take a break to ‘cool off’. If you haven’t read her first book, what are you waiting for? Pick up Damaged Dreams and then devour Shattered Secrets, you won’t regret it!

Book one was more of an introduction and setting up the storyline so let me just say- totally unprepared for all the DRAMA! So action packed with so much character development wrapped in sexy scenes and sprinkled with comedy! I absolutely CANNOT wait for book 3. Kris Butler sure knows how to leave you begging for more!!! The relationships of the characters really pulls you in and makes you wish you were assigned a room too! Get comfy and get to reading because this series does not disappoint!

The series just keeps getting better! There’s lots of steam, love, heartache, so many secrets, and the perfect amount of humor! I laughed, got way hot at times, and couldn’t wait to read what was coming next! I love the amount of mental health trauma in the book and the ways the characters go about dealing with their anxieties! Such a great read! I can’t wait for book 3!!

Man, I have vertigo... this book took me through so many twists and turns. If you thought that the first book was a wild ride... just you wait because this book is INSANE! There was so much action and suspense, which I really appreciate as in some romance books the plot is just the romance, but not this series. While the characters do develop better relationships, the overall story is intense and compelling, I don't want to say too much and give anything away, but let me just say you will not be able to predict what happens.

Gripping page-turner that leaves you begging for more!

Contemporary books are never my go-to when I'm looking for a new read but Kris has proved me wrong and opened my horizons. It's definitely a genre that I need to start looking at.

The first book leaves you with a cliffhanger that had me snapping up the second book. The cliffhanger on this one is so much bigger and I simultaneously wanted to cry and squeal with joy.

The relationships develop and deepen in this book and there are some very steamy scenes!

I can't wait to see where Kris takes this in the next book ... but seriously I can't wait, I need it now!!!!

Amazing

The second book proved to be even more amazing then the first. Not only do we learn more about our guys as well as their family , we also learn more on how that connection pertains to Sawyer. We see new family emerge as well as returns of old loves. I love the multiple POVs esp those of side characters as well as it provides an overall balance to the story. Can we talk about that cliffhanger though

I CANNOT recommend this book enough. Seriously, please get this book, and if you haven't read the first book yet, then definitely go read that one so that you can immediately start reading this one right after. I was laughing out loud while reading it, sobbing uncontrollably, feeling way too hot and bothered, and everything in between. Kris Butler is so amazing, she weaves the most incredible stories, with relatable, loveable, genuine characters. And the plot keeps you guessing and turning each page, desperate for more! The first book left you on quite a cliffhanger, but thankfully this one starts answering questions and filling in gaps...although it also ends up leaving you with a whole bunch of new questions haha. There are steamy scenes filled with fantastically written smut, and you will just fall even more in love with these guys. As with the first book, this is a reverse harem novel, with some MM action as well. So if that's your scene, BUY THE BOOK!!! And if it's not your thing, that's fine, but if you're at all on the fence or open to trying it out, then please please please read this series, it is so amazing and sucks you right in! I am so desperate for the next book, and you will be too! While this book has some fantastic smut, don't worry, there is also so much more to it, and it is all so well written. There is also a fantastic focus on mental health and trauma, it is a crucial part of the story, but never overshadows the greater arc, it is just another piece of the picture. Moreover, she did an amazing job being realistic about it, and keeping everything grounded in truth and reality, making the characters and their struggles that much more relatable and therefore enjoyable. The world she created, the plot, the characters, the relationships, ALL of it is amazing and I will go to the ends of the world shouting it to the rooftops!

Shattered Secrets by Kris Butler is a reverse harem sports romance. This is the second book in The Council Series.

The book does come with a caution "This is a why choose romance meaning the FMC will end up with three or more love interests. There is no cheating, and the final book will end in a HEA. There are three books in the series, and books 1 and 2 will end in cliffhangers. This series is a NA medium-high burn with MM, MFM, and MFMM meant for 18+ readers. Some themes may be triggering for some readers."

This is Kris's Debut novel series and she knocked it out of the park. The series just keeps getting better! I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I am loving the relationship between Sawyer, Rhett, Rey, Soren, Mateo, Oliver, Tyler, and Elias. I really enjoyed that we got each of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

I am also enjoying the relationship blooming between Asa and Finley. I can't wait to find out more about their relationship in the upcoming book.

The book does end on another amazing cliffhanger! I can't wait for the final book in the series Fractured Futures to be released on September 30, 2021.

I would highly recommend this book if you love reverse harems, sports romance, romantic suspense, or contemporary romance. This book is a MUST read for romance readers.

Amazing. A must read.

What a ride! I loved the start of the series Damaged Dreams, Shattered Secrets has just upped it for me. The character development and intrigue going on around them was really well written. Questions were answered but more questions arise! The hot scenes were Hot! Sensitive subject matter was handled perfectly with some amazing laugh out loud moments strategically slipped in. The description allowed me to feel as if I was right there with them, I felt every emotion given to me. I can't wait to see what happens with Sawyer and all the guys this is a must read series I will certainly enjoy re reading it, it's just that good!
