Aiden E. Messer does not exist. Are they an illusion, a ghost, a mere thought? No one knows. If we are to believe one of the children they seem to work with, if they were a teacher, they would be as tall as a human. They are not a teacher. According to various sources, they have studied psychology, and have always had a penchant for horror and the macabre. They like to combine these subjects in their books.

I received this book for an honest review

Funquiz by Aiden Messer Author was a short and not so sweet read about how far cyber bullying can go. The story was amazing and downright sick.. I loved it. I absolutely loved the main character, he was the very definition of " young, dumb and full of...... iykyk, He made some dumb choices but mostly from a good place. The writing was fantastic and I loved the inclusion of pictures and online text chat. This was a solid 5/5 stars for me I would very much recommend this one and will be reading more of this authors work in the future.

It was supposed to be fun....just a stupid online kids game/forum. And it was fun....until it wasn't.

In Funquiz Messer, takes their readers into the darker side of the internet. We get to see what happens when cyberbullying goes too far. Is the story a bit far-fetched? Well, certainly, but in today's world... I could 100 % see something similar taking place (maybe not to this extreme, although the author was influenced by actual life events!!), but enough to make this story a little extra terrifying.

Funquiz has a lot of blood, sex, and gore, albeit a little less than some of their other books. Who knows, maybe I'm just getting desensitized!! So, with that in mind, if you're sensitive to what you read, please check triggers.

One other thing that I enjoyed about this book was the format. Some parts actually looked like an online transcript from the website right down to all the various usernames. And as we have come to expect from Messer, this book also had some great illustrations, which is always such a cool bonus!

If you're looking for quick, bloody, queer and entertaining splatter books, I can't recommend Messer enough.

“Guillem didn't think Selenio would actually kill anyone.
Probably.”

Ohhh man, this was one insane tale of an internet cyber bully/predator who takes things too far. His attacks seem to transcend from the screen to real life and one young man may be about to fall into his trap!

Reading this totally reminded me of weird MySpace chat rooms and that old MyCoke game (gosh I’m probably dating myself here) that I was WAY too innocent to be on. There were so many creeps lurking 👀 online, even back in the early 2000s. Things just seem to be even worse as pretty much everyone has access to each other now, and new ways to find out private information.

Aiden’s story definitely had me go deep into my thoughts with this brutal tale, and really begs the question: if you can get away with anything online, then where’s the boundary in the sand? Maybe the next thrill for these creeps is hurting others in the real world instead of the virtual one.

FunQuiz is a violent and gory novellette about cyber bullying and the dangers that lurk in the dark corners of the internet. Sometimes not even that dark, since the messaging platform in the book where it all begins is for kids (well, teens, but they're kids nonetheless).

I was already an adult when the first online chats became popular (here in Finland at least) so I really never got into them, but I'm very well aware of the awful behaviour of people when they're given full anonymity. And that probably has gotten even worse over the years. FunQuiz manages to capture that behaviour perfectly and of course being splatterpunk, takes it multiple steps further.

Aiden E. Messer has yet not disappointed me with their books. Well, maybe in length, since I could have easily read a hundred pages more! This was also the first time I've seen Discord used in a book, so kudos for that!

Thank you again for an amazingly weird and disgustingly wonderful book and thank you for gifting me an eArc. As always, it was a pleasure reading it ♡

Funquiz is based on events that happened to the author in their youth, which makes this all the more disturbing. It's a sinister and chilling look at cyber bullying, and when it goes too far! In this particular case, it goes way too far, it goes to the absolute EXTREME!

A brutal, powerful tale of manipulation, confusion, and outright nastiness. It is shocking yet informative and makes you wonder just what the fuck goes on in peoples minds, how big their egos can get, and just what they are willing to do to protect their image and online presence.

Guillem has always wanted to get the attention of his ‘idol’, Selenio, so when he finally gets a chance to show his devotion and to interact and join Selenio’s exclusive online group, the AntiKali Family group, he takes it. But it isn't anything like he expected and it quickly spirals out of control….

Selenio is a bully, the worst kind, he likes to provoke people, threaten them, set them up, then humiliate and destroy them in horrific ways. When a new group is formed, an Anti Selenio team, to say he doesn't take it very well, is a huge understatement.

Videos start appearing, horrific videos, are they for real though, or another of Selenio’s attention seeking, ego boosting stunts? Has his power got out of control and the macho bragging become a tragic reality? And why does Guillem feel the way he does when he watches the videos? Guillem decides to investigate more thoroughly, using a pseudonym, and that's when things take the most sinister and disturbing turn!!

Guillem is extremely confused, about his life choices, his sexuality, and just wtf is going on with Funquiz! He gets a kind of Stockholm Syndrome effect, a need to feel needed, wanted, by anyone, but he soon realises the truth of things…

Selenio is an extremely clever and dangerous man, you do not want to cross him. He can access your life at the press of a button, and he can take it just as quickly! And never, ever question if what he does is for real….

This is a savage, merciless and debauched story of guilty, shameful desire, naivety in the face of mistaken affection and attention….and ultimately, regret! And it's really well done and will leave you with some real food for thought….

I was looking forward to reading this book as it's based on true facts from the author's experience and I was not let down!

This is a short read with as much brutality as it has empathy. In a few pages the author conveys the complexities of being a teenager in a world often bigger than them. It puts a spotlight on how easy it is to be bullied online, when young brains and personalities are not fully developed and their emotional and psychological system is trying to make sense of the world. On top of that there is the desire and need of belonging (how many times I've fallen for that) which often can mask our internal security system, with dire consequences.

I loved how the very extreme scenes had a psychological connotation and how they were used to describe the inner turmoil of the main character!

I'm not going to lie, this is a short but intense read, but that I think is necessary as cyber bullying is all too real and you never know how far someone is willing to go!

Thanks to the author for a copy and this is my honest opinion.

Sometimes, what happens on the internet doesn’t stay on the internet. Keyboard warriors meet their match in this brutal little tale. What starts as a way to get closer to someone quickly evolves into a dark spiral of bloodshed. Not all matches are made in Heaven, and not everyone is who they say they are… sometimes they’re so much worse. This was a fun read.

Another grim splatterpunk novella! I thought this was a super interesting format given that it was written through forums for parts of the story, and the interactions the characters had online felt so realistic, the classic truth of bullies hiding behind screens. I think the images really added to the story as well. I have to be in the mood for something as graphic as this story was, but it was a fascinating read and I think Messer has such a great imagination!

A dark, visceral story with a frightening reality at its core. Messer's descriptions, whilst horrific, are absolutely fascinating. This is quite a quick read and the end is perhaps abrupt, but overall the conflict within the MC had me really invested.

First of all, huge thanks to Aiden for letting me be an ARC reader! This book is out 15th June. It's quite short and perfect for those who love extreme horror. If you're unsure if extreme horror is for you, you should absolutely check the trigger warnings before going in. This one is intense!

Our main character is part of an app and discord that's led by a bit of a pyscho! Are they just an internet warrior though? Or are they actually extremely dangerous? Are those terrifying videos fake... or real?! I think the whole social media aspect of this book is very realistic, the internet can be a damn weird place! This book takes it to the next level, but it does raise a serious question: who are you talking to online? Would you meet someone from the internet in real life?!

I liked the main character, although they were very naive. I appreciated we got a bit of development on this issue though with the whole unloving / always angry father etc

I also like the format of this book, I'm never a big fan of text messages in books etc, but as this is a story about a social media chat room... It made sense and worked well! It was deffo entertaining. The ending is DARK! And brutal! Oh so brutal!

Well worth a read if you want something short, gripping and extreme!

This is a pretty good story talking about online bullying. It’s crazy how people get online and how they don’t think what they say will affect others. It’s insane how they go on such a power trip thinking who they are online means they have all the power in the real world. They are truly some despicable things in this book. I liked it overall. I enjoyed the revenge aspect that takes place at the end of the book. I really wanted the main villain to get what was coming to him and he sure does. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks for the copy Aiden! A gory bloody mess as always.

FunQuiz explores the toxicity of online games and communities. How rules can take over, and control of moderators can really go to their heads! The torture is graphic and the passage about lungs made me physically cringe...great job!

One of my top books this year by far. The horrific plot is inspired by true events and it shows. As unhinged as FunQuiz gets, I HEAVILY relate to this story. Being a young teen on the internet, becoming enthralled with an abusive and egotistical man, being e-stalked by older men, knowing it's wrong but still having that bizarre attraction to feigned power...yeesh. Too real. Messer captures this hyperspecific feeling so well that it left me feeling particularly haunted...how many of us have gone through this very trauma, thinking ourselves alone?

By the halfway point of the ebook, I purchased a print copy. It's that good.

Heed the content warnings, things get graphic and depraved pretty quickly.

A short, fun, extreme horror read. I’m a sucker for movies like Unfriended where you just see the computer screens, so I enjoyed the snippets of the forum and Discord chats here. I don’t think I’ve seen that done in a book before - so kudos!
The gore kicks in later on in the book and it gets intense at times. There were a few moments, in particular the scene with ribs, that really got me, but I’ll say no more and leave that up for you to discover!

FunQuiz is a short but suspense filled book. plus all the art done is incredible, the artists did a great job at really bringing the words to life. the way the book has the messaging platform set up included really helps you feel like you’re right there with all of the characters and truly makes it feel how it would in real life.
the story does a great job of how people handle cyber bullying. whether they stand up to it with no hesitation, join in, or try to quietly stand up to it because they’re scared it may happen to them. i think this is the perfect balance of what happens when you choose each option.
another phenomenal story, absolutely worth the read.

To be based on a true story (with fictionalization) this was an interesting story about the horrors of online trolls and how important it is to remain safe. Just because your in front of a monitor doesn’t mean horrible things can’t happen to you

Fun Quiz focuses on an 18 year old who joins a fan group online. What starts as some trolling and questionable reactions from the leader of the group soon turns to something much, much worse.

This is a fairly short read, but it hits hard. This is actually one of the only extreme horror books I've read that made me feel physically ill while reading it, and I think the only one that I needed to take a brief break from before diving back in. The subjects of toxic fandoms, dangers of the internet, and the risks of idolizing people all still apply and - to a lesser extent - can feel relatable.

Massive trigger warnings for SA and gore. It's extreme horror. Read at your own risk.

A quick read about some of the realities of social media. What should have been a fun place to discuss innocent subjects such as fantasy games turns into something much darker. It make this read so much better that it is actually based on true events. Just goes to show, the internet can sometimes be a very dangerous place.

I want to thank the author for giving me an ARC to read and review. This is my 3rd book I’ve read by this writer and it is by far my favorite one. This is a quick read which can be read in one sitting. There is plenty of brutality, gore and violence to satisfy fans of splatterpunk and extreme horror. Warning: for those of you who have triggers regarding sexual violence, trauma and abuse, you might want to avoid this one but I loved it. Only wish it was longer.

I was looking forward to this book since I read the summary, and it did not disappoint. The trigger warnings are there for a reason, so please pay heed to them. I knew exactly what I was getting myself into before I opened to the first page. There is graphic violence and gore as well as SA in the book.

This brand of horror is to show the horrific behavior of humans, both online and in person.

I opened the book the day I received it in the mail, thinking I was going to read maybe a chapter to half of it (due to having a busy day), however I finished it in one sitting. It's hard to put down once you get started. You want the answers. You want to know why the people are being such sheeple with an obvious bully online. You see the mob mentality we so often witness in real life when we're on social media. Are some of the behaviors exaggerated? Yes, for the sake of art; and with the author's every intention of doing so.

Guillem is a wonderful protagonist with a complex personality. There is a rawness to him that we see in his replies to others online alongside his thoughts on events in the text. His personal situation allows us to understand some behaviors even when we're yelling at the page for him to just not. He is very human and dynamic.

There are characters both loveable and absolutely loathsome in the book. A few, man, I wanted to just punch through the page (because obviously violence is the answer; but this is fiction, so it's separate). What I am ineloquently saying is: the author absolutely delivers on drawing emotions from readers. Joy/humor, disgust, frustration, and anger among them.

There is ample foreshadowing and great pacing. Despite that foreshadowing, my heart did skip a beat at one particular point in the book. It sped in numerous others. Again, there is graphic gore on the page with some included imagery; images are not over-the-top, and lend themselves perfectly to the story.

One major part of the horror, to me, came in Guillem's very conflicted feelings regarding specific moments in the text. After reading the trigger warnings, this was precisely what I was hoping there would be, that very complexity. The horror at our humanity, at our own conflicted feelings and reactions to events. That absolutely made the story for me.

If you can stomach gore and want a good, though also quick, read, this is one you should be grabbing.

I used to recommend books like this one to parents so they could see the dangers of unattended screen time for kids and how easy it is for predators to seek out the vulnerable. But now, I'm recommending this book to everyone who has ever felt lonely and isolated and has sought out an online friendship. You never know who exactly who you're talking to over that keyboard, and the risk of inviting something awful into your life is pretty high.

The main character is young, naive, and feels like a disappointment to his father. So when his cyber friend take-charge Selenio adds him to a Discord chat, he feels singled out. Important. Noticed. It's everything he ever wished for.

Be careful what you wish for.

Thank you so much to the author for gifting me this early read in exchange for an honest review. This title will publish July 15, 2024.

A Tale of Internet Road Rage to the Extreme.

Aiden Messer’s FunQuiz subtly (and brutally) pokes fun at internet trolls and keyboard warriors with this gruesome tale of one psychotic man’s demand for complete power and respect over the people on an app known as FunQuiz. When the threats of violence begin to seem too real, another user attempts to find out the truth, but instead gets much more than he bargained for. In the internet world where we often worry about just how easy it might be for those wishing us harm to find us, this novella hits every nerve and produces an extreme nightmare scenario that makes you wonder just how far someone might go to silence those who hide behind their keyboards to slew insults and disparaging comments. Maybe the next time you feel like fighting with an anonymous troll online, you’ll think of this story…and simply let it go.
