Deathless Creatures

When you can't die, how will you live?

We lie forehead to forehead, eyes so close that they are all we see, transfixed in our morbid codependency.

"I’m glad you found me," he eventually whispers, breaking the silence.

"Me too."

He kisses me gently. I kiss back, rough and desperate, pulling his head against mine, wishing my kiss could bind him to me and erase his desire to leave this world.

Twenty-seven-year-old Sarah Woodward died on a Tuesday. Crushed and thrown into the icy waters of Seattle’s Elliott Bay in a horrific bus crash, she should have stayed the fifteenth victim. But something else had plans for her. She resurfaced with silver hair, a flickering reflection, and a terrifying new reality: she can’t truly die, she remembers places she's never been, and she can resurrect the dead.

Struggling to accept her immortality, Sarah finds Alex Smith, a wealthy and weary self-exiled vampire who witnessed her resurrection. Exhausted by the burdens of his immortality, Alex is searching for his final death. They are fused together by their fates and fall fast into a dark equilibrium. But when a taste of Sarah’s blood restores his heartbeat and grants him temporary humanity, Alex will ask something of Sarah that will either be his redemption or his undoing.

As Sarah and Alex chart a deeply unconventional path, ancient vampires and a secret society interrupt their hopes. The society has been waiting generations for Sarah to return and fulfill her true, devastating purpose. Determined to protect the vampire she loves and stop a murderous, greedy leader, Sarah must fully embrace her dangerous powers over life and death, even if it means losing Alex forever.

Deathless Creatures is a gritty, dark urban fantasy paranormal thriller. It combines gothic romance with elements of supernatural horror and lush imagery.

By the end of chapter one Deathless Creatures has established a rich array of narrative possibilities for the hero Sarah Woodward: the mystery of her death and the mystery of her life, the awakening awareness of special powers, the erotic allure of a stranger who already seems to know her, and the annoying offer of aid from a mysterious collective that seems not to have much aid to offer. and the dreaming allure of a magical crimson tree. The languid middle of the story weaves all these strands through Sarah’s first-person experiences which coalesce around an unusual romance between two supernatural but powerful and beautiful lovers. Alex and Sarah grow together through experiences of death and resurrection and their mutual discovery of each other’s strength. He is a four-hundred-year-old vampire, and she is something unique but apparently the creation of a mysterious Society of Keepers. Lots of revelatory dialogue is well-written, naturalistic, rich in both literalistic and impressionistic ways. Sarah and Alex are underplayed for all the drama of their reality and credibly drawn. The story evolves through their different journeys of self-discovery, acceptance, and conflict with ancient and contemporary villains. But especially through their realization of strength in codependence. With the aid of a guide named Lucy they are led to the responsibilities of the Keepers, whose ancient task has been to maintain a balance of conflicting human energies and whose leadership is apparently Sarah’s destiny. The enormity of these personal, cultural, and communal discoveries plays out vividly in a setting of Seattle streets, locations, and skies; through exotic dwellings in the penthouse of Smith Tower, at the bottom of Snoqualmie Falls, on the shore of the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest, and eventually at Mt Erebus in Antarctica. Actions and emotions are persistently and fluidly grounded by surroundings of classical and modernist books and painting and sculpture. Set too within the generic arenas of supernatural and fantasy fiction, the novel generates a compelling and moving romance between two striking heroes as they struggle within the maelstrom of their lives toward a destined self-awareness, strength, and knowledge. Sarah stands on the edge of accepting her fate and her power, and the reader witnesses the emergence of a hero likely to have the intelligence, wit, ability, and charm to close the current novel and to coordinate the powers of its trio of unlikely partners in more novels to come. Sarah discovers her identity and her mission. Katie Wilson discovers the multiple magic of a modern metropolis and a mysterious lair of solace, force, and calling. The realization of the romance, the various undead creatures, and the major plot points of the story perhaps want more elaboration. But the author provides a suggestiveness that, like the work of the Keepers, maintains a balance between the forces of genre and their poetic articulation in blurred focus, implicitness, skimmed moments of emotional tension and eruption. The narrative lines of development are quietly compelling through the incubating middle of this birth story, and the author’s writing details both worlds with realistic clarity and imaginative, painterly, allure. The novel locates a new and attractive hero in a fictive world that needs the powers of the undead with a writing skill that outpaces the spaces it creates and contains.

The Core Premise
Deathless Creatures is a haunting and atmospheric exploration of survival, identity, and the blurring lines between humanity and the monstrous. Set in a world where the concept of "deathless" isn't just a metaphor but a physical, often terrifying reality, Katie Wilson crafts a narrative that feels both intimately personal and epic in scope.
Plot and World-Building
The story follows a cast of characters who are forced to navigate a landscape shaped by ancient, lingering powers.
A World of Shadows: The world-building is subtle yet effective, revealing a society built on the remnants of a history that refuses to stay buried.
The Struggle for Self: At its heart, the plot isn't just about physical survival against supernatural threats; it’s about the internal battle to maintain one's soul in a world that demands its sacrifice.
Character Analysis
Wilson excels at creating characters who are deeply flawed yet undeniably sympathetic.
Complexity: The protagonists are not classic heroes; they are individuals burdened by their pasts and the difficult choices required by their present.
Interpersonal Dynamics: The relationships—ranging from tentative alliances to deep-seated rivalries—drive the emotional weight of the story, making every betrayal feel earned and every moment of connection poignant.
Themes and Tone
The book maintains a consistently dark and lyrical tone.
Identity and Memory: A recurring theme is the weight of memory and how it defines the "deathless" nature of the soul.
Morality in Extremis: The narrative constantly asks what it means to be human when the traditional boundaries of life and death are removed.
The Verdict
Katie Wilson’s Deathless Creatures is a standout in the dark fantasy genre. While the pacing occasionally slows to allow for deep introspective moments, the payoff is a rich, rewarding experience that lingers long after the final page. It is a "must-read" for fans of gothic fiction and character-driven supernatural dramas.
Recommended for: Readers who enjoy The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue or the works of Leigh Bardugo, but are looking for a grittier, more existential edge.

Suspenseful

The prologue tells you when and how she died. However, the Tuesday bus accident that claimed fourteen others wasn’t her final, but the end of the beginning of Sarah’s supernatural life. A first-person narrative, it narrates the ensuing intrigues.

Did she give the wrong signals somehow? “Have you found anything unusual?” Lucy, who had been examining her, asked. “Weren’t you in that terrible accident…someone lived. Was it you?” Should Sarah, 22, remember anything, she should contact her for a very special project. There have been no other people like her for about three hundred years.

Did the project have to do with a cave? Sarah would later ask Lucy, who needed her help in a matter of life and death, and sent a familiar photo of a cave as Sarah had dreamed it, seen it and remembered it. Can she be a keeper, who removes and returns special objects in special places, only the undead can enter, as needed? Will Sarah, whom they have been waiting for so long and is among the few who can withstand death, go to the cave on behalf of the Society of Keepers, where time moves too fast, and retrieve something that keeps the balance, when “the world needs you” yet those sent in don’t come out?

Meanwhile, Alex is the only vampire in Seattle. He’s revived after tasting blood from a scratch on Sarah’s finger. She revived ghosts. No stranger to time, he warns her this object isn’t normal, but would accompany her forever when ready. What happens when there’s a conflict of interest, especially when he’s identified by those trained to recognize unnatural things? When two deathless creatures are drawn together and forge an unknown path? When Alex is a bargaining chip at the hands of a cruel, greedy creature called the Phoenix threatening his final death?

Suspenseful.

Deathless Creatures by Katie Wilson is a dark and atmospheric urban fantasy that combines supernatural mystery, gothic romance, and horror into a compelling story about life, death, destiny, and the consequences of returning from the impossible. Sarah Woodward's resurrection immediately establishes an intriguing premise, especially as she begins experiencing memories and visions that seem connected to something far beyond her understanding.

The story becomes even more engaging through Sarah's relationships with Alex and Lucy. Alex's existence as a vampire and his desperate desire for Sarah's altered blood create an emotionally complicated connection, while Lucy draws Sarah into the dangerous world of a secret society and its murderous leader. As Sarah's abilities over life and death develop, the personal stakes become increasingly intertwined with a much larger supernatural conflict.

For readers who enjoy dark urban fantasy, paranormal thrillers, gothic romance, vampires, secret societies, and supernatural mysteries, Deathless Creatures offers an intriguing combination of atmosphere and high-stakes storytelling. Its focus on resurrection, forbidden desire, supernatural power, and difficult choices creates a strong foundation for a continuing trilogy and should appeal to readers who enjoy darker, emotionally driven fantasy.

Deathless Creatures was an interesting mix of paranormal romance, mystery, and darker fantasy that pulled me in right from Sarah’s unusual return from death.

I really liked the idea of Sarah discovering that she not only can’t die, but also has the ability to bring others back, because it gave the story something different from the typical vampire romance.

Her relationship with Alex was probably my favorite part. There is an immediate connection between them, but the fact that Alex has grown tired of immortality while Sarah is just beginning to understand hers creates an interesting contrast. I also enjoyed the Seattle setting and the darker atmosphere surrounding the story.

As more about Sarah’s abilities, the secret society, and her connection to the past came to light, the mystery became even more intriguing. There are familiar vampire-romance elements here, but the author adds enough unique ideas to make the story feel like its own. I especially liked the combination of romance with the bigger questions about life, death, and what immortality would actually mean. The ending definitely left me curious about where Sarah and Alex’s story will go next.

The read was dark but romantic.

This is a dark urban fantasy story with gothic romance about a protagonist who has to solve the mystery of what happened to her when she died and returned, and why people have been waiting for her.

Wilson creates an interesting twist on vampire fiction that I found super fascinating, especially because of the protagonist’s unique abilities.

The romance in DEATHLESS CREATURES is another intriguing element as Sarah’s relationship with Alex carries a built-in tension. The tone is atmospheric, romantic and strange. There is plenty of supernatural danger, but the story has a soft center because of Sarah’s romance.

Although Sarah is unique, the novel has some familiar “vampire story elements” such as the mysterious, attractive supernatural man, an immortal being tired of existence, and a secret supernatural organization

"Deathless Creatures" by Katie Wilson is an intriguing dark gothic fantasy. As the title makes it aptly clear the plot revolves around Sarah and Alex, the protagonists, two immortal beings. However, when fate brings them together a romance begins along with conflict with a secret society. I will abstain from spilling more about the plot as it is the most thrilling part of the story.
The narrative is engrossing and smooth building up the suspense and mystery. Romance, vampires, secret society, supernatural powers are beautifully woven together. The story picks up pace from the very first chapter and keeps the reader compelled to turn pages till end. It is Book 1 of the trilogy yet readable as standalone. I would like to know how the story unfolds and progresses in the next part of the series.

Not the usual boy meets girl

Sarah's resurrection got me completely hooked. The irony in how she struggles with immortality she never asked for and how Alex has spent centuries desperately wanting his immortality to end made the book much more interesting for me.

The dark feel of the plot kept making me want more because there were so many secrets, such as the society of keepers and truly, what Sarah is.

I feel DEATHLESS CREATURES can be a rewarding pick for readers who like female protagonists in paranormal setups. It has some horrific parts, but I wouldn't describe it as very scary.

DEATHLESS CREATURES by Katie Wilson is a romantic, dark vampire thriller that completely surprised me. Her novel takes the classic vampire story and gives it a fresh modern feel, blending romance, mystery, art, history, and dark elements into a story that kept me hooked.

The Seattle setting was one of my favourite parts of the book. The dark atmosphere suits the story perfectly, and I enjoyed how Wilson brings her knowledge of art, photography, history, and Seattle into the book. The book has a quirky, moody charm that makes it feel different from most vampire romances.

Deathless Creatures is a great mix of a supernatural coming-of-age story and an exciting romance. The story moves at a good pace, the characters are easy to care about, and the little hints and clues eventually come together in a satisfying way.

One of my favorite things about Deathless Creatures is how it handles vampire lore. Wilson doesn’t just reuse the same old vampire ideas and rules. The book introduces some fresh ideas and offers a unique take on life in this strange, deathless world. I got really interested in the mythology and wanted to see how the world might grow in a sequel.

From its dreamlike first-person narration to its mythology-hopping world building, Deathless Creatures is a quick and immersive read. Just like our main character Sarah, we don't know what's coming next, because her world is vast and dark and full of things she doesn't understand, but Katie Wilson effortlessly makes us know that whatever it is coming... we want it, and we're going to enjoy the ride.

Deathless Creatures was a great paranormal romance. I loved the vampire elements and how seamlessly the history of the vampires was woven in. I also thought it was a fairly unique take on a vampire romance novel which was quite refreshing.

I loved the writing and the characters felt very realistic. I loved how well all of the elements blended together in this book and I would love to read the sequel when its out on October 6th. A very fun read, would recommend.

Deathless Creatures by Katie Wilson is not for everybody. But readers who enjoy themes of life and death, the paranormal, resurrection, and humanity might find this book a treat. I like the central premise and characters. The way the author uses supernatural elements to move the story forward is probably the book's biggest strength. Some moments were thought-provoking, while some were a bit hard to wrap my head around. Overall, it’s an enjoyable read, especially if this is your genre.
