Of Seas and Tides #2

Trapped by Magic

Rate this book
For fans of The Cruel Prince and those who always wanted to see Draco end up with Hermione, this enemies to lovers fake dating romance is sure to entice.

A crime lord’s daughter, a vampire with a secret, and the bed of lies that will seal their fate.

Though her father is a powerful crime lord and leader of a reclusive assassins guild, Bronwyn has always had to work hard to get what she wants.

The ancient spellbook she has her eye on is no exception.

She will do what it takes to get her hands on that kind of power, even if she has to pretend to be a student to earn the trust of its caretaker.

But when she discovers that her handsome but cruel first year tormentor is actually a vampire with his own plans for the academy, Bronwyn’s life is put in danger. If his associates learn that she knows of a growing vampire infestation, they will kill her.

Though neither is eager to work together—to save her life—they enter into an uneasy pact. A fake romance to fool everyone around them while they continue to work to their own ends. They don’t need to get along or even trust each other, they just have to make the world believe that they are madly in love.

And yet this devious vampire has a way of making the spark of their affections feel a bit too convincing.

Trapped by Magic is the 2nd book in Of Seas and Tides, a multi-author series of romantic fantasy novellas designed to be read in any order (but read mine first, haha!). Each standalone features a villain who gets their happily ever after in a swoony, swashbuckling romance.

Confession: I never have gotten the hype and love for Draco from the Harry Potter series—to me he was just a whiny bully, but to each their own, I guess. (Please don’t come for me Draco fans… *hides*) So hearing this was heavily inspired by Dramione (Draco + Hermione) was a bit of an eyebrow raiser though seeing it was a Nicki book there was no doubt I was gonna read it no matter what or who inspired it.

And I really enjoyed it!

I do admit the first twentyish percent was pretty slow due to the worldbuilding info without a lot of character interactions, but once Wilder catches Bronwyn and they’re forced together I didn’t want to put the book down! (Also it’s slowness was due to me trying obsessively to figure out where this fit in with Rage Like the Gods, which I FINALLY figured out as being set after the end of that book, but, boy, did trying to figure it out distract and annoy the heck out of me, lol)

I definitely saw the parallels to Draco and Hermione in Wilder and Bronwyn and yet they were their own separate people making this a very fun and intense read. I grew to love both of them, especially poor tortured Wilder, and I do hope we see them again in other Ruskhazar books as I’d like to see how things go for them. And the character cameo from A Tale of Gods and Glory was so fun because I was like, “is that…? Yes, it IS!” which made me really happy as I liked that book quite a bit and was always curious to see where those characters ended up.

There was only one thing I’m confused about and it’s that we’ve been told all along that if a character uses magic then turns to sorcery they will go mad, sooo…isn’t that what a character did at the end, using sorcery instead of the magic they were trained in? Won’t they go mad now? I certainly hope not, but that part was a bit confusing as to what they did and what that means ultimately for them, so I hope it gets cleared up somehow, either in this book or in another.

Gorgeous cover, amazing characters, cute romance, and fighting some vampires to boot, this was an amazing story and I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy! Nicki Chapelway wins again!

Return to Ruskhazar with Fake Dating, Enemies to Lovers, and a Magical Academy

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

"If she gives away that we are not lovers stealing a moment in a darkened room, then I will have kissed her in vain."
~ “TRAPPED BY MAGIC” (OF SEAS AND TIDES #2) ~ NICKI CHAPELWAY

This was a fun little novella set in the magical academy (the best that Ruskhazar can offer) which was honestly one of my favorite settings in “Rage Like the Gods” so I was super happy to return to it. It gives some dark academia vibes, which is something I didn’t even know I liked until I started reading these books. It gives off cozy fall vibes with a hint of murder and magic. Honestly, something I would want to read snuggled up in a blanket next to a fire and sipping hot chocolate.

While this book can be read in any order, there are a few cameos of some characters and mentions of certain events from the other books in the world of Ruskhazar. The ones I could catch was from the books “Rage Like the Gods” and “A Tale of Gods and Glory”, both books I would recommend. So while unnecessary, it does make “Trapped by Magic” a little more fun if you had read the other two books first. =)

We follow the characters Bronwyn, one of three adopted daughters of a crime lord, and Wilder, a recently turned vampire. Both of them trying to figure out where they stand in the world.

I really liked Bronwyn with her being a bit of a bookworm, having a vast knowledge of crime-like things. And the fact that she actually wants to be at school to learn. Even though she can at times be manipulative and feisty, she also just seems like a nice person. I really like that she loved her family but was unsure of how to contribute to their business. She was very much: “I just want to read books and learn magic.” and I felt that.

It took me a little longer to like Wilder. Though, this also makes me glad that we had his POV. Because it really helped me understand his character better. I kinda empathized with his past. I really liked him having unsure feelings about being a vampire.

What I Didn’t Like:

So I’m going to admit that this book was heavily advertised as being a Draco/Hermione-inspired couple, which I kinda just shrugged about. I have never gotten into the “Harry Potter” franchise. Other than knowing who some of the characters are, it didn’t really mean anything to me. I knew that this book was going to have them be enemies to lovers, though, which I do like.

But, I don’t know, I honestly didn’t like Wilder in the beginning. I have never liked it when a bully is being mean-spirited to someone and everyone is like: “Ohhh, he likes her.”

While this book didn’t really have people shipping them together, Wilder himself is the one going: “Maybe I did these mean things because I like her.” And it just doesn’t sit well with me. I like the fact that Wilder did try to redeem himself by trying to protect Bronwyn. But I felt it was a little more rushed than it should’ve been.

Content in Book:

1. Magic and sorcery. (I mean, this is a book about a magic academy). (Sometimes using magic to hurt or kill people).

2. Worshiping gods and demigods.

3. Vampires (Drinking blood and the obsession of wanting to turn people by biting them).

4. A character who was raised by a crime lord (thieving, threatening to kill people, actually killing people, breaking into rooms, making friends to manipulate and use later on, mafia-like family, etc.)

5. Mentions of children who were abused by their father.

6. A few unwanted kisses.

7. A character bullying another.

Who I Would Recommend This Book To:

Those who want to read a dark academia story with vampires and someone who was raised by a crime lord. Someone who likes enemies to lovers and fake dating. A very good read, would recommend!

"“A prince of vampires?” Wilder asks, his tone dripping with contempt. “I’m not quite sure that’s the award you believe it to be. Now, kindly get your foot off my fiancé before I remove it for you… and from you.”"

Vampire stories are my kryptonite. I can read them for the rest of my life and never be bored of them. Trapped by Magic is book 2 in Of Seas and Tides series (each a standalone novella done by a different author) and follows Bronwyn, daughter of a crime lord and Wilder, a newly turned vampire who goes to the same academy but can't see eye to eye.

This is for all the Darmoine lovers, I don't read fanfics or talk about anything JKR but I can see why people who love them would definitely love this book. Irrespective of my personal feelings about the upper topic I still loved it. The MCs were perfect for each other.

With a good novella you are always left with wanting more and so the Afterword that confirmed that Bronwyn and Wilder will return means I don't have to say bye to these two yet. I haven't read any of the other books by the author but I am planning to read some of it soon considering this is part of a universe.

This fast paced short story has everything a romantasy reader wants in a book and delivers a HEA while still making you crave more!

💜 Enemies to lovers
💙 Villain wins it all
💜 Redemption arc
💙 Fake dating 🌶️
💜 Cozy adjacent
💙 Magical academy
💜 Humans & vampires
💙 Mysteries

The blurb cought my eye and it did deliver. For all Dramione and Cruel Prince fans, this is it! I loved everything about it and it could not put this down, I devoured this short story🙌🏼 All the tropes are done so well and in only 150 pages! It has some nice world building, the magic system is unique and well explained, characters are deep, relatable and shows growth, and the romance is just what I craved, but didn’t get in Harry Potter. Even the banter between the two MCs is more than I thought we would get!

I really like the set up for expanding this world even further and was dreading it to end to quickly and still want more, but luckily I don’t have to say goodbye to the MCs and will be able to meet more characters in this world in the fall for the next characters story. Can’t wait for that!

Thank you so much to Nicky Chapelway for the ARC

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone

– Nicki Chapelway has more books set within this world (Ruskhazar) & more to come, but you don’t need to read them to enjoy this one

– this is told from Bronwyn & Wilder’s points of view

– it is mentioned that Bronwyn’s biological father was abusive

– it is mentioned that Bronwyn’s family members are assassins, necromancers, vampires, & thieves

Review:

I’ve been looking at Nicki Chapelway’s books for a bit now and finally picked this one up to start me off. I loved it and I can’t wait to read more of her books! I loved the banter between Bronwyn & Wilder and that they were forced together at times due to being in the same live-in school. I loved not having all the facts at once for either character and getting to know their goals bit by bit as the story unfolded. I am glad to see that we will get to know Bronwyn’s family more in future a book(s) through another character’s story. I hope we’ll see more of Bronwyn & Wilder in it & what they’re up to at that point!

Summary:

Bronwyn is at a school for magic under the guise of a student to obtain an ancient spellbook for her powerful crime lord father. Though the task should be simple, Bronwyn has to work hard at gaining the trust of the spellbook’s caretaker in the midst of her classes. However, when she discovers that her tormentor has become a vampire since she last saw him, Bronwyn has yet another problem to deal with lest she lose her chance at obtaining her goal. Because this vampire is in the midst of plans that could be detrimental for Bronwyn as she isn’t supposed to know anything about them…

Wilder is deep into his vampire sire’s master plans with what looks like no way out. When the girl he can’t keep from teasing catches on to some of the secrets they’ve been keeping, Wilder has to protect her by any means necessary. Even if that means proposing a fake relationship between them to throw his sire off their scent…

I loved it!

I've never read Dramione fan fic or anything, but I've always loved the idea of Draco and Hermione being together. So I was really excited when Nicki announced this book. I have a love-hate relationship with novellas because they give you just enough but at the same time, you want more. And I am definitely looking forward to reading more about Wilder and Bronwyn!

Some of my favorite parts were the confusing romantic feelings between the two characters. They both had their flaws and weaknesses, but they proved that they were better together. There were so many swoon-worthy moments, especially when they were vulnerable and honest with each other.

I was also so impressed with the worldbuilding and magic system that Nicki created. Usually I am overwhelmed by that sort of stuff, but she wove it into the story so beautifully that I didn't get lost or bored.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves Dramione vibes, as well as dark academia. There are vampires in this story (who also drink blood), so if that makes you uncomfortable, you might want to take that into consideration. It is a clean (no spice, profanity, excessive violence) and quick read, perfect for anyone wanting a dark academia book on a cozy fall day.

i thought it was great 🪄
my only complaint is missing commas in a couple of places where it would’ve made the sentence easier to read, and that it wasn’t any longer! i was invested in their story and would love to know what happens next

thoughts while reading
Perhaps it is my father's teachings, but power is something that should be sought by few and attained by even fewer.
After all, if everyone is equally powerful then no one is powerful. What is power if not an edge over your enemy?

p39: that’s when wilder will appear
p41: see, i could’ve wrote this book
p64: totally crushing on bronwyn

My life has never been normal by any stretch of the imagination, but I think that kissing Wilder is perhaps the most surprising thing that I have ever experienced.
And I walked in on my father murdering one of his business associates when I was eight.

No more kissing in private?
Well, that's not so bad. It just means that I have to kiss her in public.

p93: my heart just died,
p123: he said “was”, she’s probably dead
p129: ironically, at some point anyway

I'm not a fan of bully romance, and I'd say this is more than than "enemies to lovers"--he just enjoys being cruel (as he himself admits), then justifies himself after he catches feelings by saying he liked her all along but hated himself for it so he was mean to her. I don't like the "he's mean because he likes you" thing at all. The book also doesn't take the time needed to turn the relationship around believably, at least not for me (unlike The Cruel Prince, which I did enjoy). It also seems their whole eventual romance hinges on the fact that they liked kissing each other and I like a bit more substance than that in my romance books, especially when they're going from enemies to lovers. I do like the worldbuilding, though; I've read one other book in this universe and I think I'd read more.

The art work for this book, especially the cover is absolutely stunning! Love the vibe of it all! I was told the book was Dramione inspired and I would say that is an extremely accurate description. It almost felt like I was reading fanfic but with enough changes to make it a unique story. If Dramione is your thing, you'll love this book that brings that romance to life in a less spicey way than most fanfics. My only complaint is that because it was so heavily Dramione inspired I wasn't able to fully appreciate the book as it was and kept comparing it Rowling's work. Nicki Chapelway books are all fun ones I would recommend!

I received an advanced copy of this book, but the public will be able to read this beauty on June 21st, 2024.

Title: Trapped by Magic by Nicki Chapelway
Genre: YA Romantasy
Pub Date: June 21, 2024
📖 150 pgs

Enemies to Lovers
Fake Engagement
Dramoine Vibes
Vampires, Witches + Mages
Crime Lord's Daughter
He Falls First

My Review:

Trapped by Magic is a short and sweet YA Romantasy novella with bully to lover romance and Dramoine vibes, but make Draco a vampire and Hermoine the daughter of a crime lord.
I think my only note is that I wish that the chapter names were the name of whose POV the chapter is written in to avoid confusion. Definitely YA, it was very easy to read and world building was simple, yet effective!

Thank you so much to the sweet author for the early digital review copy ❣️

Oh how I loved this.
I was lucky to receive an e-arc of this, and I’m so glad I did.

I’m definitely a Dramione girlie, so I was sold from the jump.
Also a fan of the fake dating trope, and enemies to lovers.

I love Bronwyn and Wilder so so much. Both characters made me fall in love with them honestly. They had many Draco/Hermione quirks, but were also unique in their own ways as their own characters.

I enjoyed the magic system in this. I’m definitely looking forward to reading future books that dive more into Bronwyn’s family and their whole dynamic and world.

Vampires. Magic. Secrets.
Bronwyn and Wilder have been enemies since their first year at academy. The second year is upon them, and Wilder has changed.... but not necessarily for the better. Their first contact, Bronwyn, learns what has happened to Wilder over break, and he has no idea how. She knows he's different in the vampire sort of way.
They work together due to unforeseen circumstances and a fake relationship to boot. They grow on each other even though neither has liked the other in the past. This was a short and sweet clean fantasy read.

So good! Nicki Chapelway gave me something I never knew I needed: a Dramoine-inspired book. Bronwyn and Wilder's banter was excellent, and I loved getting the story from both POVs and knowing their true feelings even when they weren't quite ready to share them with each other. I loved the atmosphere and setting of this book, and I would have loved another 200 pages. I can't wait to see them again in the future.

nicki chapelway has the power to make me read a dramione retelling in 2024. she also has the power to expand this universe and form a well- rounded, complete book but she chooses not to exercise that power, which is sad for me. she can write great dialogue. just needs a push in the plot and detail department.

Trapped by Magic

Another delightful story that was fun to read! I enjoyed this rivals to lovers story! The characters were enjoyable to read and the story was fast-paced and easy to get caught up in.

There were alot of great tropes in here like rivals to allies, fake dating, he falls first, surprise kiss, touch her and xxx vibes, academy setting, magic and of course banter!

Wow!! I loved this book! I was pulled in right from page one! The main characters were intriguing and both morally grey! I couldn't put the book down because I had to know how everything was going to end! I really thought the author did an amazing job! The ending was worth getting there and the epilogue promised more to come!! Eeeekk! I can't wait! 💜

3.5/5

this definitely meets the description of The Cruel Prince with Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger. Imagining those two made this more fun to read tbh. Obvs the romance build up was quick cos this is a short story but it was done really well.

Would've rated this higher if it hadn't been so repetitive.

Well, it's short

This is okay. It's not great. I wouldn't bother reading the series. It's too underdeveloped, the characters, the plot. It moves quickly enough and it's a short read. I just couldn't get into it. There's no language. There's only kissing. There is magic and vampires and werewolves. No LGBT characters.

I hate to say it but I did not like this book. I was excited at the prospect of Hermione and Draco vibes but was pretty caught off guard. Vampires are not for me I realized and I didn’t really like how demonic it was seeming by the end. Overall, I was not super comfortable with it for my own conscious’ sake. I did skip some pages because I was uncomfortable.

Enjoyed but was lacking

I liked the story but wish it hadn't been padded more into an actual book not a novella. Everything needed more fleshing out. There were a lot of typos and grammatical errors.

This is definitely not the usual academy romance, even if it is a romantasy. The enemy-to-lover and the falling for the bully tropes are still in play but I really like how the author has twisted those tropes into kitten toys. This turned out to be more original and fun read than I expected!
