The McCarthy Sisters #1

Wish Upon A Christmas Star

Rate this book
Attorney Jeannie Carmichael can’t wait to celebrate Christmas at her grandparents’ Butterfly Lake Lodge in the Canadian Rockies. The night before she leaves, Jeannie and her colleagues stop for drinks at a local pub, where she chats with the handsome, charming guitar player of the house band. He shares his number, but Jeannie’s eyes are on her colleague and the promise of an invite to his fancy New Year’s Eve party, so she stuffs the number into her purse.

Everett McCarthy is shocked when the beautiful Jeannie from the bar calls him, but it’s about a Christmas Eve gig at her grandparents’ lodge, not a date. Still, he and the band accept and head to the mountains. Over the course of an eventful party, a tussle with an errant elk, and midnight snowshoeing through the woods under the glow of the romantic Northern lights, Everett is smitten. Christmas morning pancakes, a family hockey game and an evening sharing dreams by a bonfire under the stars seals the deal. He’s in love.

But can he convince Jeannie that their Christmas kiss is just their beginning?

Who doesn’t love a good Christmas romance, this one is set in the Canadian Rockies there is snow and family Christmas parties just the thing to make you feel Christmassy, fabulous characters and of course a beautiful romance come along and meet our hero and heroine.

Attorney Jeannie Carmichael is looking forward to spending Christmas with her beloved grandparents Sue and Duke at their Butterfly Lodge the night before she is meeting up with workmates at the pub, here she ends up chatting to one of the band members he gives her his number but Jeanie is hoping for an invite to a New Year’s Eve party from one of her colleagues, the phone number is forgotten for now.

Everett McCarthy is disappointed that he never got a date with the beautiful Jeannie and is shocked when she rings him and asks him and his band to play at her family’s Christmas Eve party in the Rockies, the night ends up being very good with lots happening and then being snowed in which means more time spent with Jeannie but he has yet to convince her that a date would be good, even after a midnight stroll through the forest and snow to watch the Northern Lights and opening up to each other he is fast losing his heart to Jeannie if only he can convince Jeannie to do the same.

Christmas kisses, wonderful food and a fabulous party all go hand in hand with the start of a very beautiful journey to a HEA for Everett and Jeannie with a little help from Sue but will Jeannie re-think her life and what she really wants to be with Everett and Everett what a hero kind caring and loving after all he has been through the perfect man for Jeannie.

I did love this story and highly recommend to any romance reader it left me smiling and looking forward to Christmas.

My thanks to Tule Publishing for my digital copy to read and review.

Wish Upon A Christmas Star by Elle Douglas is a lovely Christmas romance that is set in the Canadian Rockies. As the book opens we meet attorney Jeannie Carmichael. She works long hours as a new attorney in the city. She is heading to her grandparents lodge, Butterfly Lake Lodge for Christmas. The couple are planning to sell their lodge and retire after the holidays. They always host a big Christmas Eve party and this year will be the last one.

The night before she leaves, Jeannie goes out for drinks with her coworkers. She has a crush on one of the higher up attorneys at her firm. She is hoping he will ask her out. Instead, he flirts with the bartender and takes her number. She is very disappointed. The guitar player from the band seems smitten with her and asks her out. He introduces himself as Everett McCarthy. She declines but accepts his phone number. Once she arrives at the Lodge the next morning, she is immediately swept up in the party preparations. On the day of the party, the band her grandparents hired calls to cancel as they’ve come down with food poisoning. Jeannie decides to call Everett and see if his band will drive up to her grandparents lodge to play for the party. They accept and he decides to try to get her to accept a date with him.

The band is a big hit. Everyone loves the music and Everett fits right in with Jeannie’s family. A snow storm hits, causing the local guests to leave early and strands Everett overnight. He spends Christmas with Jeannie’s family, playing in the annual family hockey game, going snowshoeing at midnight and fighting off an elk. Jeannie starts to see him in a different way. The two share a kiss and Everett has fallen in love with her. He only has to hope Jeannie will feel the same.

I loved the story. It was very romantic and also had some surprises. It was my first book by Elle Douglas and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. The characters are genuine and there is a happy ending. It is a quick and easy read. The author has done an excellent job with the characters and the story. Books set during the Christmas season in a small town are always wonderful. I give this 5 stars and highly recommend it.

I was fortunate to receive an ARC from Tule Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

Elle really captures the spirit of Christmas in this one. So get ready cause Christmas will be here before we know it...72 days to go here in the US. You had better start being good now cause Santa is watching.

Attorney Jeannie Carmichael has worked very hard to be where she is today and it feels good to have achieved one of her goals...she is a lawyer and has a great paying job that she loves. The only thing she loves more is going to
celebrate Christmas at her grandparents’ Butterfly Lake Lodge in the Canadian Rockies. This is the last time we can go all out at the lodge as my grandparents are retiring and selling the lodge. The night before she leaves she goes to a local bar to have a few drinks with her friends. There is a really good band playing and she likes their music, a little bit of everything. During one of the bands breaks she meets Everett McCarthy the bands charming guitar player and they exchange phone numbers. He never expects to hear from that beautiful woman again. She is out of his league.

Was he ever surprised to hear from her a few days later. The band that was supposed to perform at the Christmas Eve party had gotten food poisoning at another gig. So Jeannie called and begged him and his band to fill in at the last minute. So him and the band headed for the mountains. Everyone was happy with the band and the party was a big hit. The more time that Everett spent with Jeannie the more he knew she was the one for him. They even used snowshoes and walked thru the woods under the Northern Lights and it was gorgeous. They shared their first kiss and now he had to convince Jeannie that he was the man for her.

Extremely well written, full of drama, love, hope, wishes, dreams and trust. Jeannie is a lawyer at a firm that is getting ready to go on Christmas break. She and the others at the firm are heading to a bar to have a drink and make plans to meet up at the New Years Eve party before going their own way home for the holiday. Everett is a member of the band who just so happens to be playing at the bar. He sees Jeannie at the bar and tries to talk to her but she has eyes on another guy. The other guy is flirting with the bartender and not paying attention to her. When she heads home after not being invited to the party and spends time with her family. She finds out that the band her Grandparents had arranged to play has something come up and needs to cancel. She finds Everett's number and has them come out to the Christmas Eve party and play. Car trouble and someone has to stay behind, so Everett does and really enjoys his time with her family. He asks her to his party but she refuses and has her own to attend. It doesn't work well and she goes back to the bar where she first met him and there he is playing. Both of them get their happily ever after. Good book to curl up with and enjoy. Would recommend to others.

This story was a complete delight to my Christmas loving soul. Butterfly Lodge sounds like a little slice of heaven on earth.

Attorney Jeannie Carmichael has her eyes set on another attorney in their office. When some of the staff go out for drinks, she soon learns that he may not be the nicest guy. She is a little humiliated and ready to leave when she is approached by one of the band members, Everett McCarthy. She notices he is easy on the eyes, but she makes her own assumptions about him. When he gives her his number, she tucks it away and forgets about it.

Later she will need his assistance for her grandparents' last Christmas shebang at the Butterfly Lodge. As she gets to know Everett, the sparks start to fly. There is so much more to this man than she first believed.

Everett was a sweetheart from start to finish who craved a loving a family. Jeannie was sweet as well, and she already had a loving family. She learned so much from Everett.

This was a perfect Christmas book for a cool evening. It was short and sweet, but there was a lot packed into those pages. Sweet Christmas memories and being careful about assumptions were two things that were important to remember from this book. The ending was just - wow!

Thank you to Tule Publishing for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Elle captures the magic of Christmas in this novella that is as sweet as the Hello Dollies Jeanie bakes with her grandmother Sue for the annual Christmas Eve party. She hits the high notes with her nod to classic 70s pop and rock songs that add a great mental soundtrack to Jeanie’s quest for love with the right guy! Set in Canada’s iconic western mountain ski country at her grandparents’ lodge, Jeanie looks forward to one last picture perfect Christmas before her grandparents sell the place that has been the backdrop for all the best Christmases. Keystone Ridge epitomizes Christmas and nowhere is it more Christmassy than at Butterfly Lake Lodge. When the jazz trio is suddenly sidelined by food poisoning, Jeanie decides to call Everett to see if his band, Megapony, will fill in last minute. Jeanie’s attraction to the lead singer is palpable, but she is still holding out hope that the well connected lawyer, Ben, from her firm will ask her out.
I received an advance copy of Elle Douglas’ Christmas novella and think it is the perfect Christmas read to tuck into a Christmas stocking for all the fans of small town, wholesome, romance reads. Do yourself a favour and put it on your Christmas wish list.

What a wonderful Christmas story.

Jeannie can’t wait to go home to her grandparents lodge for Christmas. Her grandparents are going to be moving so this is the last Christmas that she will be spending there and she wants it to be perfect.
When she gets there, she finds out that the band canceled for the party. It just so happens that she met the head of a band at her work Christmas party. He was really flirting with her, some really bad pick up lines. So as cute as he was, she was not interested. She actually had her eyes on someone else . But he was bound and determined to see her again. He gave her his phone number, she threw it in her purse never expecting to need it.
When she got to the lodge, things just weren’t going right. First off the band had called and canceled. Jeannie wanted everything to be perfect so she dug through her purse. She found that number to see if Everett and his band would be willing to play for her grandparents Christmas party. Their final farewell to the lodge.
It takes on quite a story from here. I don’t want to give anything away because it’s to amazing of a story to not read for yourself. I read it pretty much in one sitting, and I loved every word.

This is a book once you start you'll not put it down till its finished. Jeannie has worked her heart out not partying, losing her boyfriend all to become a lawyer. But now she'd done it it didn't stop there, if she wanted to stand any chance against the male lawyers she'd have to work even harder. But today is the start of Christmas break, so she was joining everyone for drinks before they go their own way. Everett isn't a christmas fan, since his dad died he'd quite happily just ignore the season. With his band playing a gig in a local bar he could just act like it's just any other day. Then while sat at he bar he sees the woman he's been drawn to stare at most of the night. Introducing himself he hoped she would be more interested, when he asks her on a date she just dismisses it so he gives her his number. Would he ever hear from her. Would Jeannie ever find the right person for her. Does fate play a hand in the outcome. Having not read any of Elle's previous books I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book which appears to be the first in a series. I will definitely be watching for the next

When Jeannie has worked so hard at becoming the lawyer she wanted to be and put in all the hours to make her mark, she is looking forward to some down time at her Grandparent's Inn. Christmas at the Inn is magical and Jeannie is really looking forward to all the festivities.

On the way to her Christmas break, a quick evening party with the staff from work seems to be a great way to start the holidays.

Playing in the bar, Everett McCarthy ( one of the singers in the band) spots Jeannie and is totally taken by her. Slipping his business card into her hand, he hopes that somehow they might meet again.

Just imagine the surprise he gets when Jeannie does indeed call with a frantic request for a band to play at the Inn!

Just when Jeannie thought she had her future all planned out, a little Christmas spirit comes into the picture to change things all around!

This was a very lovely book to read and I enjoyed it completely as I'm sure you will as well.

Jeannie works as an intern at a lawyers, she's spent years studying and thinks that now she needs to find a boyfriend, she sets her sights on Ben, but actually he's not very nice! It's Christmas so that's a time to go to Butterfly Lake and spend it with her parents and grandparents, at their lodge. They always have a big Christmas Eve party, but this year the band has let them down, Jeannie contacts the band from the pub to see if they can come or not. Everett sees Jeannie and immediately wants to get to know her better, but she seems enamoured with the other guy.
Jeannie's grandparents are retiring after this season, she's upset about it being the last Christmas at the lodge, and is what she's doing really what she wants?

This book is a great start to a new series. Jeannie's grandparents own lodge in the Canadian Rockies. They spend every Christmas there as a family and have many holiday traditions. Jeannie goes to the pub with her coworkers to flirt with her coworker Ben. She is thinking he is the one for her if she could just get him to ask her out. Everett is in the band that is playing at the pub. He notices Jeannie right away. When she abruptly leaves the building Everett follows her out. He strikes out on the date front and figures he will never see her again. Then fate takes over and the band for the Christmas party at the lodge cancels. Jeannie asks if his band can step in. The more time he spends with her the more Everett thinks she is the one. Jeannie thinks she needs a more professional man than a band member. Can Jeannie figure it out before it's too late? Good read.

Stars and Snow

This story will rank as one of my favorite Christmas stories. This Canadian author easily captures the beauty of her country’s winter wonderland while treating readers to a sweet clean contemporary romance between an upcoming attorney Jeannie Carmichael and a band member Everett McCarthy. A chance meeting at a bar, and Jeannie’s need for a band for her grandparents Christmas party at their lodge bring the two together again. This time, a few days of festivities makes all the magic they need. Read the details of their respective family dynamics, their ambitions and how Jeannie’s unrealistic ideal for a partner almost diverts their track to an HEA.

Superb storyline, wonderful characters, humorous situations and heartwarming moments and dialogue generate a memorable Christmas romance. Definitely deserves more than 5 stars ✨.

Wish Upon A Christmas Star by Elle Douglas is a sweet vintage story taking place in the 1970’s. Not exactly historical fiction, certainly not for one as old as I am. It is said the be the first of the McCarthy Sisters books, but I am thinking this is their parent s’ story since attorney Jeannie Carmichael does not have a sister but her love interest does become one Everett McCarthy.

A heartfelt family story of changes, new beginnings, and family traditions. The main characters are perfectly suited for each other though Jeannie needs to see that for herself. Loved her grandparents and their wisdom. We all could use someone like them in our lives. A Christmas story that will touch your heart.

The first few pages caught me off guard, making me question if I was reading the correct book.
BUT THEN (cue music)…talkin’ ‘bout my generation 🎼🎹🎸 what an enchanting experience developed from this story! It was like looking at old photographs of myself…in a Pinto, a Gremlin, classic bell bottoms, hot rollers….truly, an absolute {afternoon} 1970’s delight, all woven into a Christmas story that I couldn’t put down! 70% of the way through & I had to stop (medically) then waited just enough & BAM! Best Christmas book so far this year! I enjoyed new to me author Elle Douglas & anticipate reading more of her work. This book was received as an ARC - & what a happy addition to my Christmas it was!

A delightful Christmas romance set in the Canadian Rockies. Elle is spending the Christmas holidays with her grandparents when she invites a band to preform at the holiday get together. She had just met the guitarist at a local pub, Everett. With a snow storm, Everett is forced to spend the holiday with Elle's family. Sparks fly and will one kiss lead to so much more?

Loved the setting of this story, wonderful descriptions. I must say I loved the elk scene. Loved all of the family traditions. Elle's grandparents are perfect. I highly recommend this book. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I enjoyed reading Wish Upon a Christmas Star! It's a story about finding your true love where you least expect it and being open to surprises. The heroine, Jeannie has her heart set on living happily ever after with the wrong guy. When she runs into Everett, a musician at a bar, she doesn't expect him to be everything she's always wanted. Through a series of happy accidents, he shows her the kind of man she really wants. The story was cute. It was a sweet romance. The author did a great job setting the reader in the cold and beautiful Canadian setting and making it feel like Christmas. I recommend this book!

Jeannie is working on her career goals as associate lawyer and thinks the smooth talking partner is the answer to her personal goals too. I could see when he was hitting on the bartender that he was only concerned about himself and looked down on anyone he saw less than him. Bandmate and guitarist Everette catches Jeannie’s eye but he’s only a musician, an attractive one that comes to her and family’s aid multiple times. But will she ever see him as more? This story takes back before cell phones and internet. I loved the lodge her grandparents had with their parties and funny boarders.

A Christmas romance to love. Love is in the air at a winter lodge between a lawyer and a musician. Jeannie is not quite sure of Everett, a guitar player. He is cute and nice and so much more. Everett is sure that Jeannie is meant for him. He is aware of her having her eye on an associate at work-a playboy at that. The magic of Christmas and the wonder of the stars brings them close as the notion of the other guy hovers.

Jeannie and Everett meet at a bar where he is playing in the band. He wants to talk to her but she wants to talk to someone else. She does end up with his number and to his disappointment does call but it's about the band playing at her family's lodge, not to have a date. The band does come and the adventure starts from here with some twists and turns until they get their happily ever after.

There's nothing like a "Christmas during spring" novella to get you out of a slump. I'm currently binging the Boys of Tommen series and its sooooooooo long and this is the perfect palate cleanser to read in between those to keep my brain fresh and happy. This is a great hallmark-esque, small-town, almost insta-love novella and I ATE IT UP. They get locked up in a snow storm and save her family's lodge and it's amazing all while falling in love. He's also a bookworm and Rockstar. It's great.

This was a sweet, beautiful, thoughtful love story. Everett was so down to Earth, and it took a while for Jeannie to really figure out what she wanted.
The characters had depth, and this standalone story, with no cliffhanger was excellent. The epilogue was wonderful.

What could a lawyer and a musician have in common, turns out, lots of things.
